Dear Nobeoka, the time has come to say goodbye! This is the last newsletter I will be writing in
Nobeoka.
Living and working here has
been an adventure. I feel lucky to
have lived among such beautiful
mountains and oceans and to
have met so many different people.
Things were not always easy
— standing in front of people for
work was always difficult for me!
But it was also a chance to be
able to talk to people about different cultures and other topics I am
passionate about. It was also exciting to weave in arts activities in
my work here, such as creating a
watercolor storybook with people in Nobeoka and
practicing an English drawing game with highschool
students.
And I was delighted to watch people try new
things! Easter egg hunts, spiral dances, wreath
making using local plants, eating hamantaschen
(Jewish cookies) or whatever new activity or
knowledge I presented, people were interested in
trying it, and this inspired me.
In particular, I remember when a woman in my
English conversation class told me, “I can’t speak
English or even write ABCs, but I’m just very curious about English, so I want to learn more
about it.” In the watercolor classes I
taught, there were participants who had
never picked up a brush or they had a fear
of trying to do art. But they were curious,
and so they joined the class. If I am ever
afraid of trying to something new, I will
think of you folks.
In turn, people involved me in their
own traditions and taught me so much. I
learned recipes, obscure Japanese pop
culture, tanabata poems…

ここに住んで働くことは冒険でした。美しい山と海の
間に住めて、いろいろな人
と出会えたことが幸運だっ
たと思います。

ろかったです。たとえば市民の皆さんと水彩画の絵本をつ
くったり、高校生と英語の絵を描くゲームを行うなど。
そして私は人が新しいことをやるところを見るのが好
きでした！イースターの卵探し、スパイラルダンス、地元
の植物でリース作り、ハマンタッシェン（ユダヤ教のクッ
キー）を食べてみる、なんでも初めてのアクティビティや
知識に対して人はやる気まんまんで、私を元気づけまし
た。
特に、英会話のクラスの女性が私にこう言ったことを
覚えています、「私は英語を喋ることも文字を書くことも
できませんが、英語にとても興味があって、もっと知りた

持ったこともない、または美術に馴
染 み の な い 参 加 者 も い ま し た。で
も、好奇心があって、クラスに申し
込んだのです。私は、新しいことに
対して怖い気持ちを持つことがあれ
ば、皆さんのことを思い出します。
そして、皆さんは日本の文化、
延岡のこと、自分たちの伝統をいろ
い ろ と 教 え て く れ ま し た。レ シ ピ

Nobeoka has been
home to me for the past 4 years
and during that time I have
changed in so many positive
ways. I dearly love this little city
and will be extremely sad to
leave, but I feel that it's time for
me to challenge myself again
and embark on a new adventure.
Things that surprised
me in the beginning are now
common place; such as placing
money in a little tray at stores,
sorting my garbage into various different bags, waiting for everyone to have their glass filled before taking a sip, and bowing at strangers in the street. I've
become far more patient and able to 'read the air',
than compared to when I lived in Australia. I feel
that these skills will help me where ever I go.
My after-Japan-plan is to move to London
where I will be able to teach Drama again, a thing
that I have sorely missed during my time here. I
want to thank all the people who have taken me
into their hearts and homes and made my time in
Japan so wonderful. I hope that we can meet again
some time in the future.

When I first came to Japan, I went to Nobeoka. It was such a wonderful surprise
to see all the beautiful nature that surrounds Nobeoka. I have been many
times to climb Mukabaki. I also have ran
many times next to the rivers. I experienced most of the wonderful events Nobeoka has to offer. I have eaten Ayu in
November and I had the best chicken
nanban from both Ogura and Naochan.
Nobeoka is my second home. I am going
to miss it dearly. It has taught me so
much and taken care of me. I will never
forget this wonderful experience. I will be
going to Tokyo after this to study Japanese, but I know everyday I will be thinking of my life in Nobeoka.
こ の 四年 間、延 岡は 私の 温 かい 住 場所 であ
り、その間に私は色々な良い点で
変わりました。この町はとても好
きで、去ることがとても悲しいで
す。でも、また次チャレンジに向
けて、新たに出発する時が来たと
思います。
初めのころに驚いたことも、
今は普通になりました。お店のレ
ジではお金を小さなトレーに置く
こと、ゴミを別々の袋に分別する
こと、みんなのコップをついでか
ら飲むこと、道で他人におじぎす
ることなど。オーストラリアに住
んでいたころに比べて、私はもっと我慢強く
なり、空気を読めるようになりました。この
ス キ ルは、ど こ に行 って も 役に 立 つで しょ
う。
日本を去った後はロンドンに引っ越す予
定です。そこで演劇をまた教えることができ
ます。日本にいる間には演劇は教えられなく
て、とてもたまらなかったのです。私に家と
心を開いてくれて、日本の時間を素敵にして
くれたみんなに感謝を申し上げたいです。ま
たいつか会えることを願っています。

初めて日本に来たのが延岡市でした。延岡
を取りまく美しい自然をみて、びっくりし
て感動しました。何回も行縢山を登りに行
きました。何回も河川敷でジョギングして
います。延岡のすばらしいイベントを大半
ぐらいは経験できました。１１月に鮎を食
べて、最高なおぐらのチキン南蛮も直ちゃ
んのチキン南蛮も食べました。延岡市は僕
の二番目の故郷です。とても寂しくなりま
す。延岡から私はたくさん習い、お世話に
なりました。永久にこの素晴らしい体験は
忘れません。この後は日本語を勉強するた
め東京に行きますが、延岡での生活はこれ
からも毎日思い出すでしょう。延岡市、あ
りがとうございます。

Where do I begin? I came to Nobeoka
City almost 5 years ago by chance. I was the
replacement for Matthew Bro, who could not
make it to Nobeoka City in
due time. A couple months
later Matthew and I met and
became good friends. We
talked about traveling, surfing
and adventures and this motivated me to travel and try
many new things. One day, on
the way home from a shrine, I
met the World Power Bench
champion who became my
coach and mentor. This led
me to compete in 3 power lifting competitions and has
paved the way for the future
(in continuing to train and
compete in South Africa). All
these events occurred by “CHANCE”. In life we
will often come to cross-roads and have to make
choices. Sometimes we just have to, “Take A
Chance”. As for the future, I`ll be heading off to
India from August 28 on a pilgrimage, deep into
the Himalayas to take in the past 5 years and
think about the future. The best word that I`ve
picked up from Japan is: ”Ganbatte”. Give your
best and never give up!

か月後には、マスゥーと私はい

サーフイン、冒険や新たな体験
のことを話し、この会話で私も
旅行して新しいことをやろうと
やる気が出ました。ある日、神
社 か ら 帰 っ て い る と き、私 は
ワールド・ベンチプレスのチャ
ン ピ オ ン に 会 っ て、そ の 人 が
コーチと 師 になりました。これ
によって三つのパワーリフティ
ングコンペティションに参加し
て、将来に南アフリカでもこれ
を続ける道もできました。これ
らはみんな “CHANCE”（まぐれ）によってで
きました。人生、私たちはよく岐路に来ては、
道を選ばなければいけません。ときにはただ
“Take a chance” (いちかばちかやってみる ) を
しなければいけません。私の将来の予定は、8
月28日に巡礼に行きます、ヒマラヤに行きこの
五年間と将来のことを考えます。日本で身に
ついた一番いい言葉は「頑張って」です。が

A Japanese-American experience in Japan
ジャパニーズ・アメリカンとして日本に住む私の経験
日本に住んでいると、人が良くこのテーマ
について質問します。なので、マンガを
使ってちょっと説明しようと思いました。
Living in Japan, people often ask me questions
about this topic. So I wanted to explain some
things (using comics).
「ジ ャ パ ニ ー ズ・ア メ リ カ ン」と
は。。。？
アメリカ生まれで親が日本から来た人、小
さいころ日本からアメリカに引っ越した
人、家族が日本とアメリカにある人など、
アメリカと日本に両方縁を感じることで
「ジャパニーズ・アメリカン」と自分のこ
とを呼ぶかもしれません。一人ひとり経験
がちがいます。私の場合は日本語と英語を
どっちとも喋りながら育ちました。
What does “Japanese-American” mean in
this case?
People who were born in America and have
parents from Japan, people who moved from
Japan to America when they were small, people who have family in both America and Japan, people who feel a connection to both Japan and America may use “Japanese American” to describe themselves. Everyone has a
different background and experience. In my
case, I grew up speaking both Japanese and
English.
For instance, I sing both Japanese and American children’s songs.

Sometimes, people explain Japanese culture to me

In Nobeoka, when babies are 100 days
old, they are given catfish to eat. This is
so the child will grow up eating lots of
different foods (like a catfish).

“Half” sounds like “half
a person”, like something is missing or
lost.

子どものころ、日本とアメリカの二重
国籍もっていました。そのまま持ちた
かったんですけど、日本のポリシーで
22歳あたりに日本かアメリカ国籍を選
ばなければいけませんでした。台湾な
どはアメリカと二重国籍OKだけど、日
本は現在二重国籍認めていません。
なので、日本に住もうと思っても、難
しいのです。例えば、日本国籍なしで
はアパートを借りるのは大変です。

When I was younger, I had dual
citizenship between Japan and the US. I
would have preferred to keep both, but
current Japanese policy makes people
choose between US and Japanese citizenship around age 22. Unlike Taiwan,
for example, Japan does not recognize
dual citizenships.
So even if I wanted to live in Japan,
it would be difficult. For instance, it’s very
hard to rent apartments without a Japanese citizenship.

When I read Japanese manga, sometimes there are characters who have parents from
Japan and America. They

You may have noticed I write about insects occasionally. Well, here is one last
story, about Kabuto beetles (Rhinoceros
beetles).
Last summer, I kept several
kabuto beetles as pets in a tank of mulch.
These died at the end of summer, but I
discovered they had laid eggs. I could see
twelve small white larvae in the bottom of
the glass tank, looking a bit like cheerios.
They ate mulch and grew larger and larger, and finally when they were the size of
one’s thumb, I decided to clean out their
tank. It was then I discovered that I had
not twelve kabuto larvae but 60 kabuto
larvae! So I did the only thing you can do
with 60 kabuto larvae, which is to give
them out to friends, co-workers in the city
hall and a few strangers I met on the
street. I kept about 20 of the larvae.
And it was here that I discovered that
there are many kabuto beetle fans in Nobeoka!
Not only did I find many people who were happy to
receive larvae, but people gave me helpful advice
about how to raise kabuto beetles. One person,
who had raised 100 kabuto beetles at a time, even
lent me some containers for the larvae.
I raised the baby kabuto through winter
and spring. Recently, ten adult kabuto beetles
emerged! And, again, I
found an appreciate audience in Nobeoka’s citizens
for this news.
I feel like I have fulfilled
an ambition. And in the process, I discovered and connected with the nature lovers (or at least kabuto afficianados) of Nobeoka.

皆さんは気が付いているかもしれませんが、私は時々
虫について書いています。なので、
もう一つ話を書きたいです。カブト
ムシのことです。
去年の夏、カブトムシを何匹か
昆虫マットを入れた水槽に飼ってい
ました。カブトは夏の終わりに死に
ましたが、卵を産んだことが分かり
ました。12匹小さな白い幼虫がみえ
ま し た、ま る で チ リ オ ー ズ の よ う
に。（チリオーズ Cheerios は薄茶
色の輪の形のアメリカのシリオルで
す。）幼虫はマットを食べて大きく
なり、親指の大きさに育ったころ、
水槽をきれいにしようと思いまし
た。そうしたら、12匹ではなく、60
匹の幼虫を飼っていることが分かり
ました！60匹の幼虫があれば、やる
こ と は 一 つ し か な い で し ょ う。そ
う、友達、仕事場の仲間、通りがかりの人などに幼虫をあ
げました。20匹ぐらいはそのまま私が飼いました。
ここで延岡にはカブトムシのファンがたくさんいると
分かりました！幼虫を喜んで飼う人を見つけましたし、そ
の上、人はカブトムシの飼い方のコツを私におしえてくれ
ました。100匹のカブトムシを一度に育てた人もいて、私
が飼っているカブトのためにコンテナを貸してくれまし
た。
私はカブトムシの幼虫を冬と春の間に育てました。最
近、10匹の成虫が
