enchmarking
For the period from January 10 through 26, 2016, Vice President McCagg and six other
AIU faculty and staff members visited three universities on the East Coast of the U.S. to
conduct surveys for global benchmarking purposes. The universities that they visited were
Dickinson College (Pennsylvania), College of illiam and Mary (Virginia), and eorgetown
University ( ashington D.C.).
During the visit, the delegation conducted hearing with representatives from the
U.S.universities using the 18 questions which had been sent to them prior to the visit. The
questions were about curriculum, faculty organization, and so on.
All of the three universities that the AIU delegation visited have strong emphasis
on liberal arts education and long and rich history. All of them have been undertaking
curriculum reform recently. The delegation
received explanation regarding structures of
curricula, philosophy behind them, procedures of
curriculum reform and organizational structures
from representatives of the U.S.universities.
In addition to these three universities, Dr.
Patrick Shorb, Director of Active Learning
Support Center also visited Carthage College,
Beloit College, ashington
Jefferson College,
Marshall University, Monmouth College. In order

In the area of English education reform in Japan,
AIU has been offering the English Village program
and Teachers’Seminar in order to leverage the
practical English teaching methods that have been
developed at the university to help elementary,
junior high and high school students and
instructors from various parts of Japan with their
English learning/teaching.
In regard to the English Village, which is a threeday English learning program taught by AIU
students, a total of 16 sessions have been held so
far, which were attended by over 500 elementary,

junior high, and high school students from all over

Japan. For this program, AIU students that aspire
to become teachers in the future and have received instructional training are responsible for
the entire process from planning to operation. Each group of five to six program participants
is closely and thoroughly supported by the instructing AIU students and international
students during the program. The program participants can not only gain an experience
that simulates studying abroad and an opportunity that can trigger the formation of a global
perspective, but also learn from the interaction with the university students who are close
to their age, based on which the participants have been able to start designing their own
academic/professional paths and also figuring out ways to live in general.
As for Teachers’Seminar, the purpose is to spread the use of English teaching methods
that lead to developing global human resources, the operation team has been offering an
intensive five-day training session to elementary school teachers at AIU every summer
in collaboration with the Akita Prefectural Board of Education as part of the initiatives
for preparing for the integration of English language education into elementary school
curriculums. In addition, an on-site version of the Teachers’Seminar has been offered to
various elementary schools in Akita Prefecture and beyond, for which AIU faculty members
travel to the schools based on their request to offer training there. Specifically for junior high
and high school teachers, four AIU faculty members offered seminars in Tokyo to impart
knowledge on effective teaching methods. Seminars were also held at the university campus,
to which English teachers from junior high and high schools all over Japan that had achieved
excellent results were invited to share their case studies with a number of other seminar
attendees that were also involved in English language education.

From September 2 through the 10, as part of the Akita Junior Chamber’

s attractive features to people in Russia,”
11 members of AIU Kanto Team attended the International Military
Music Festival“Spasskaya Tower,”which was also attended by a large
number of military bands and folk dance troupes from various countries,
and showcased the Kanto techniques in Red Square. Although the music
festival event was cancelled for the second day due to inclement weather,
the AIU delegate’
s performance was met with warm cheers from the local
audience on the other three days. The delegate also held an interactive
Kanto event at a park in Moscow, which allowed many local children to put
their hands on the drums and experience the spirit of the Kanto Festival
first-hand.

attended by 1,085 and 712 people,
respectively. Perhaps due to TV
appearances made by President
Norihiko Suzuki, the number of
attendees at this year’

working efficiently with each other as a team to graciously welcome the
visitors.”Another male prospective student from Kanagawa Prefecture, who
attended the Open Campus in October, mentioned,“I enjoyed hearing AIU
students tell stories about their study abroad. hile I could imagine that those
students must have faced many challenging situations, they hardly showed
it, which made me think I would like to be like them when I enter university. It
was quite a stimulating experience for me to be able to see so many university
students whom I could model myself after,”who apparently renewed his
commitment to be admitted to the university.
In 2016, AIU is planning on holding Open Campus events again in July 17,
September 18, and October 9 with the support of student volunteers. e are
looking forward to welcoming you to one of these events at the AIU, which
is surrounded by beautiful lush

on October 11 and 12. Despite
unfavorable weather conditions,
the 12th AIU Festival was
attended by many visitors, as it
was held on the same dates as
the 3rd Open Campus event. A
number of people from the local
communities also attended the
festival, who enjoyed interacting

駐日大使連続公開講演 /Ambassador Lectures Series
開学 10 周年記念事業の一つとして、2014
年 11 月から各国の駐日大使を招いた連続公
開講演を開催しています。
9 月 11 日に開催した第 6 回には、駐日欧
州連合大使を迎え、
「最新の EU 情勢と日欧
協力の展開」
と題してお話しいただきました。
また、2 月 16 日には、第 7 回として駐日ベ
トナム大使が来学し、「ベトナムは日本の重
要パートナー」と題して日越を取り巻く政治
と経済の諸問題について語っていただきまし
た。
講演会には、本学学生や教職員以外にも多
くの一般参加者があり、国際社会のあるべき
姿について共に考えました。
この講演は、国際社会の未来と秋田県が果
たすべき役割を考えるとともに、政治・経済・
教育・文化における各国とのネットワークづ
くりを目指し、全 10 回シリーズで開催しま
す。

EU Ambassador Mr. ISTICIOAIA-BUDURA
From November, 2014, as part of the AIU 10th Anniversary Project, we started a
series of 10 public talks, inviting ambassadors from various countries to Japan as
lecturers.
For the 6th lecture event, held on September 11, the Ambassador of the European Union
to Japan was invited to AIU to give a speech titled“Updates on Recent Developments in
the EU and EU-Japan Partnership.”In addition, for the 7th installment of the Series, which
was held on February 16, the Ambassador of Social Republic of Viet Nam to Japan visited
the campus and delivered a lecture titled“Viet Nam is an Important Partner for Japan,”in
which the Ambassador talked about various political and economic issues that concerned
the Japan-Vietnam relationship.
In addition to our students and academic staff, many participants from the general
public joined the lectures and deliberated together about the ideal state of an international
society.
Via those addresses, we will consider the role that Akita Prefecture can play for the
future of the international society and aim to increase political, economic, educational and
cultural networks among various nations.

ANU・淡江大学冬期プログラム /Winter Intensive Japanese Language and Culture Program for The Australian National University and Tamkang University
1 月 4 日から 2 月 12 日まで、オーストラリア
国立大学（ANU）の学生 7 名を対象に「上級
日本語・秋田学冬期集中プログラム」を実施し
ました。学生は言語構造知識の習得、発音矯正
のための口頭練習や敬語・待遇表現を身に付け
る練習を行いました。また、教室での事前学習
を基に角館歴史村・青柳家、樺細工伝承館、男
鹿真山伝承館など歴史、文化施設を視察、見学
することにより、秋田の伝統工芸、行事、歴史
に関する知見を深めました。2 月 5 日から 7 日
には仙北市の「白岩城址燈火祭」に参加し、一
般家庭でのホームステイも体験しました。
また、1 月 18 日から 1 月 29 日まで、台湾の
淡江大学の学生 16 名を対象に「日本語・日本
文化集中プログラム」も実施しました。

Learning how to wear kimono
From January 4 through February 12, AIU offered the“Japanese Language and
Cultural Immersion Program; Advanced”to 7 international students from The Australian
National University (ANU). The students participating in the program were able to
acquire knowledge on the linguistic structure of Japanese, practice pronouncing
Japanese phrases to correct accents, and learn honorific and attitudinal expressions.
In addition, the students put their classroom study to the test during field studies of
historic and cultural sites such as the Aoyagi Samurai Manor Museum, Kaba Craft
Denshokan, and Oga Shinzan Folklore Museum, where the students deepened their
understanding of Akita’
s unique traditional crafts, festivals, and history. From February
5 through 7, the students also participated in the Shiraiwa Castle Tokasai Illumination
Festival in Senboku City and had a homestay experience with local host families.
In addition, from January 18 through 29, AIU offered an intensive Japanese language
and culture program to 16 international students from Tamkang University in Taiwan.

On September 2, Mr. Ishige, Chairperson of Japan External Trade Organization
(JETRO), visited AIU for conclusion of the Comprehensive Partnership Agreement
between AIU and JETRO. By virtue of the Agreement, AIU students will have,
among other things, internship opportunities at JETRO s offices in and out of Japan,
international students studying at AIU will receive
information on Japanese SMEs, which makes JETRO
a bridge between human resources overseas and
Japanese companies. It is also planned to have
JETRO s staff members at AIU as guest researchers
studying on the globalization of regional economies.
On AIU s side IASRC will be at the center of the
collaboration with JETRO.
