Hello everyone! This is the first newsletter of 2012. This year has started with heavy snowfalls in
Akita. For all that, we wish you a happy new year!
Akita Global Network: We publish this newsletter hoping to reach people who have left Akita to both
maintain connections to Akita and elevate overseas awareness of Akita. Please enjoy and feel free to share AGN
with your family and friends.
Life in Akita
The contributor this time is Ms. Tumi Seitshiro, from Botswana, Africa. She is an international
student at Akita University who came to Akita in 2009. I wonder if she could imagine Akita’s freezing
winter before she came. Let’s see what her life in Akita is.
November marks the end of warmer days as the anticipation of another freezing winter increases. We
savour the few warmer temperatures we get, and mentally store the good feeling the rise of the sun brings.
Coming from the Sub-Sahara region where summers are long and winters are mild and short, I dread the
impending season even more.
So, December begins and dreams of the clock turning back to kinder temperature days diminish. Out comes
the jackets and boots, ready for the freezing snowy Akita winter. I must admit, the first snow fall feels a little
magical-like we’ve seen in the movies! Although, I prefer to just be staring out through the window and not be
outside. But it ends there! Heading into Christmas, I find myself missing home even more. Alone in freezing
weather versus time with all family members in the blazing Botswana heat, I know what I’d choose!
And so begins the longest and coldest winter I’ve ever experienced in my life, where snow seems to be falling
every day. December passes, January comes and passes too and it’s still snowing, February follows suit. March
comes, and it’s still cold, although snow rarely falls and some on the ground begin to melt. Towards the end of
March, early flowering plants and trees, such as plum trees, deliver the first signs of spring, while the weather is
getting noticeably milder.

April, the month I look forward to, when my favorite season is in full swing. That's
when the real Spring comes, and Akita comes to live! April is often considered the best time to visit Japan
because the cherry blossoms are in full bloom in most regions of the country and the weather is pleasantly mild.
And I most definitely concur. Golden week takes us to the beginning of May, where we all go out and enjoy the
beauty of nature [Senshu Park, Akita]. The Sakura are in full bloom, the vegetation has become lush, the air
feels fresh and the temperatures kindly warm.

~Akita Africa-Asia Festival~
June brings the Summer season. Temperatures around this time surely remind me of Africa. Well, that is,
before July comes. The combination of rain and high temperatures results in ‘hot and humid weather conditions’.
I still wouldn't trade that for January weather. So, beginning of July sees us enjoy the annual Africa-Asia festival.
Here, various foods, fashion, music, dances and other items from a few African and Asian countries are
showcased.
~Kanto Festival~
The hot and humid weather carries on into the month of August. This is one of my favorite months. In the
first week, Akita welcomes the nation, as it hosts the annual Kanto festival. The candle-lit lanterns suspended or
rather hung on a bamboo frame, by groups of about 3000 people is purely mesmerising. And the sheer strength
and dedication of the performers to balance the Kanto is amazing. So, we watch and listen to the sound of flutes
and drums, and cheered on by the distinctive traditional shouts, the performers balance the Kanto without
gripping the poles, and placing them on the palms of their hands, they raise them higher and higher.
~Omagari Fireworks Festival~
Then toward the end of August, we get to enjoy a fireworks festival. This annual fireworks festival, one of
the major fireworks festivals in Japan is held downstream of the
Omonogawa River, Daisen City. It reportedly began in 1910. In
the festival, there is a fireworks competition of about thirty
fireworks artists, selected from all over Japan who compete to
show off their techniques. Although the event starts around
sunset, many people go as early as midday, to find the perfect
seating area to view the fireworks. However, those who find that a
hassle, buy advanced tickets for the reserved seating area. I
attended the festival in 2010, which coincided with the 100th
anniversary, attracted about 800,000 people to the city with a
population of 40,000 people. All came to view the big,
breathtaking and intoxicating fireworks display.
September comes, and the weather is still a hot and humid but a little bit comfortable. The typhoon season
usually peaks around this time. A few summer festivals are still held around the city, people enjoying the warmer
temperatures. Senshu Park plays host to a few of these, including a Jazz festival I’ve attended in the past.

~Akita International Festival~
October marks the beginning of the fall season. It is one of the most pleasant months for travelling in
Japan as the weather remains warm, but is not hot and humid anymore. Trees around Akita city start changing
colors. As the month progresses, so does the Autumn color. The view can be spectacular for those who like the
season. The end of the month sees another festival－
－ the Akita International festival. It’s similar to the
Africa-Asia festival, but instead is open for all nations of the world. It is a very eye-opening event which exposes
people to different traditions and culture of the represented countries across the world. The all-day event
usually held on the last Sunday of the month, marks the end of a fun filled Spring-Summer festivities.
November comes, and we get ready for another dreaded winter, while we reminisce about the past few
months.
Republic of Botswana
Botswana is a landlocked country in Southern Africa, bordering Zambia, Namibia,
Zimbabwe and South Africa. The national land is as large as Kenya or France, of which 80 %
is covered with the Kalahari Desert and the savannah. Although it is very hot all day with
daytime temperature reaching up to 35 degrees Celsius, it feels cool after frequent rain and
thunderstorm. In winter the weather is dry and cold. The temperature falls to 2 degrees
Celsius, or even to below zero in some places.
Botswana is famous for hosting a variety of wild animals in great numbers. Most of the
large mammal species living in Africa, including lions, leopards, cheetahs, elephants,
giraffes, zebras, hippopotamuses, and rhinoceroses, can be seen in Botswana alone. To
protect wildlife, the natural environment of the country’s vast areas is kept intact; 17
percent of the territory is designated as national parks and wildlife sanctuaries.

みなさん、こんにちは！ ２ ０ １ ２ 年はじめのニュースレターです。今年は大雪の冬となっていま
すが、この１ 年がみなさんにとって良い１ 年でありますようにお祈りしております。

My Life in Akita
今回アフリカのボツワナから留学生として来日している Tumi Seitshiro さんが秋田での思い出を書いてくれました。
Ｔｕｍｉさんは来日前にこの秋田の寒さを想像できたでしょうか！今Ｔｕｍｉさんがどのような秋田ライフを過ごしている
のかみてみましょう。
11 月になると、凍りつく冬がまたやってくるという気配が高まり、少しは温かさが感じられた
日々も終わりを迎えます。わずかに感じられる温度を体で味わい、日の出がもたらしてくれるよ
うな心地よさを心に蓄えます。
私は夏が長く、冬は短くて穏やかなアフリカ南部出身なので、目の前に迫る冬にいっそう不安
を覚えるのです。
そうこうしているうちに１２月になり、暖かな日々に時間が逆戻りしてくれるという夢は消え
ていきます。ジャケットとブーツを取り出し、雪国秋田への準備はばっちりです。初雪の景色は、
今までに映画でみたことのあるような、ちょっと魔法がかかったもののように感じてしまいます。
私は外にいるよりも窓越しに雪が降るのを見ている方が好きなんですけどね。ですがそれも終わ
りです！クリスマスが近づくと、私は余計にホームシックになっていることに気が付きます。凍
りつく寒さの中に一人ぼっちでいるか、または太陽が照りつけるボツワナの暑さの中で家族と一
緒にいるか…どっちを選択すべきか私はもう分かっています！
そのようにして人生で経験した中で一番長く寒い冬が始まり、ここでは毎日雪が降っているよ
うに感じます。１２月が過ぎ、１月が来ては終わり、２月もまだ雪が降ります。３月になっても
なお寒いですが、雪は滅多に降ることはなく、地上に降り積もった雪は溶け始めます。３月下旬
になると気候は際だって穏やかになり、梅のように早い時期に花をつける植物や木々が最初の春
を運んでくれます。

４月は私がとても楽しみにしている季節です。私の好きなシーズンが本格化します。本当の春
が訪れ、秋田が活気づきます。４月は日本を訪れるにはベストシーズンだとよく思われます。な
ぜなら、たいていどこでも桜は満開で、天気も心地よく穏やかだからです。私もまったく同感で
す。５月上旬のゴールデンウィークには、みんな外出をして自然の美しさを堪能します（秋田の
千秋公園）。桜は満開、草木は青々として、空気はとても新鮮で気温もちょうどいい暖かさです。

秋田・アジア・アフリカフェスティバル
６月は夏の季節の始まりです。この時期の気温は必ずアフリカを思い出させてくれます。まあ、
それは７月が来る前のことですが。雨と高い気温が組み合わさると、“蒸し暑くじめじめとした”
天候になります。それでも私にとっては１月の天気よりましです。７月上旬には年に１度のアジ
ア・アフリカフェスティバルを楽しみます。このフェスティバルではたくさんの食べ物と、ファ
ッション、音楽、ダンスが披露され、アフリカとアジアの国々のアイテムも紹介されます。
竿燈まつり

８月になっても暑くじめじめとした天気は続きます。8 月は私が好きな月の一つです。８月の
第一週に秋田では竿燈まつりが開催され、全国から観光客がやってきます。火のともった提灯が
ぶら下がっているというよりは竹竿にしがみついているような竿燈を、およそ３０００人がそれ
ぞれのグループで持ち上げる様子には、純粋にとても強く惹かれます。そして、その竿燈のバラ
ンスを取る差し手の力強さと真剣さは驚くべきものです。
私たち見物人は、笛や太鼓のお囃子を聞き、特徴ある伝統的なかけ声で声援を送り、差し手たち
は竿を握ることなくバランスを取って、手のひらに置いて高く高く竿燈を上げます。

大曲の
大曲の花火大会
そして８月末になると、大曲の花火大会を楽しむこと
ができます。年に１度開催されるこの花火大会は日本の
大きな花火大会の一つで、大仙市の雄物川の下流で開か
れます。伝えられるところによれば１９１０年に始まっ
たとのこと。花火大会では日本中の花火師から約３０人
が選ばれ、それぞれの技を競います。この大会は夕方あ
たりから始まりますが、多くの人がお昼ごろからやって
きて花火を鑑賞するのにベストな席を確保します。です
が、それが面倒だと思う人たちは事前に予約席のチケッ
トを買います。私は２０１０年にこの花火大会に行きま
した。２０１０年は大会１００周年の記念すべき年にあ
たり、人口４万人の大仙市に８０万人の人々が訪れました。観客全員が、巨大で息をのむほどの
感動的な花火を見にやってきたのです。
９月になり、天気はなお暑くじめじめしていますが、少しだけ心地よいです。台風シーズンは
大抵このあたりにピークを迎えます。秋田市内ではちらほらと夏祭りがまだ行われていて、人々
は暖かな気温を満喫します。千秋公園では、私が以前行ったことのあるジャズフェスティバル等
のイベントを開催します。

１０月は秋のシーズンの始まりを表します。天気はまだ暖かいですが、暑くなくまた湿気はも
はやないので日本を旅行するにはもっとも快適な時期の一つです。秋田市周辺の木々も色づいて
きます。日が進むにつれて、紅葉も深まります。秋のシーズンが好きな人にとっては、この時期
の風景は壮観なものでしょう！１０月末には別のフェスティバルがあります。それはあきた国際
フェスティバルです。アジア・アフリカフェスティバルと似ていますが、世界中の国々が対象と
なっています。世界中の代表的な国々の異なる伝統や文化を人々に紹介をするびっくりするよう
なイベントです。丸１日続くこのイベントは、通常１０月の最終日曜日に開かれ、これで春から
夏にかけて楽しかったお祭りシーズンが終わりとなります。
１１月になって、ここ数ヶ月のことを思い出しながら、また不安一杯の新たな冬へ向けての準
備にかかります。

ボツワナ共和国
ボツワナ共和国は南アフリカ地域の内陸の国です。ザンビア、ナミビア、ジンバブエ、南アフ
リカ共和国と国境を接しています。国土の大きさはケニアやフランスとほぼ同じで、国土の８
０％はカラハリ砂漠の砂と低木のみの大草原（サバンナ）に覆われています。夏は昼夜にわたっ
て非常に暑く日中の気温は摂氏 35 度に達しますが、雨や雷雨が多く、雨が続いた後は涼しくな
ります。冬は乾燥して寒く、冬の気温は摂氏

温も記録されます。
ボツワナは数も種類も豊富な野生動物で有名です。ライオン、ヒョウ、チーター、象、キリン、
シマウマ、カバ、サイなど、大抵のアフリカに生息する大型ほ乳類はボツワナで見ることができ
