Inauguration of New Building Brings New Prospects for CFLL
W ith
the Foreign Languages Building nearing completion, the
six departments of the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures
(CFLL) are ready to move to their new homes. Meanwhile, the University,
in the hope that the College will take a great stride toward a new future,
declared 2005 the “Year of Foreign Languages.” Dr. Mei-hwa Sung,
dean of the College of Foreign Languages and Literatures, wished that
this would provide a new start for the faculty and students of the College.
Tamkang started as an English
language institute in 1950. Not only
was the English Deptartment one of
the oldest departments, the Graduate
Institute of Western Languages and
Literature, established in 1970, was
also one of the only two graduate
programs of the University at that
time. Today the College of Foreign
Languages and Literatures boasts of
six language departments—English,
Spanish, French, German, Japanese,
and Russian.
Moving to the new building,
Dr. Sung pointed out, affords a great
opportunity for the faculty and students
of the College to aim for higher
achievements. To facilitate the aim,
Dr. Sung devised a series of activities
and plans to get things moving.
May, for example, is designated the
“International Month,” in which
students celebrate a rich variety of
international cultures through theatrical
performances, dancing, and gourmet
cuisine. In June, the College will
relocate; it is the time to settle in the
new building and think about the
future. A “house-warming” ceremony
will give the month a special festive
aura.
The new semester starts in
September, which is designated the
“Multilanguage e-Learning Month”
to mar k th e in au g u r atio n o f th e
Multilanguage e-Learning Website.
This website is being constructed by
a team of faculty members from the
six departments and led by the dean.
By simply clicking on the button of
“Situational Dialogues,” “Cultural
Wi n d o w, ” “ P i c t u r e D i c t i o n a r y, ”
“Essays,” or “Sentence Patterns and
Grammar on the web page,” students
can sit back and learn with ease one
of the six languages available on
the website. October will be the
“Foreign Languages Contest Month.”
All six departments will hold various
contests, and students will have
great opportunities to show their
accomplishments. In November
c o m e s t h e U n i v e r s i t y ’s 5 5 t h
anniversary, and the College will hold
conferences and invite scholars from
sister universities to participate. The
end of the year is the time to celebrate
Christmas and the New Year. The
College anticipates reaping rich
harvests in this celebratory mood.
Some changes are also in
the offing, Dr. Sung pointed out,
and some goals are to be achieved.
In addition to the English and the
French departments, the other four
departments will establish graduate
programs as well. Furthermore,
in order to encourage students to
cultivate a second specialty, the
College will set up foreign-language
translation programs in all the six
departments. Passing their respective
Foreign Language Proficiency Test
will be a graduation requirement for
all the students of the College. This
is no easy task, and Dr. Sung hopes
Lanyang Campus to Initially Recruit
200 Freshmen This Summer
The Lanyang Campus of TKU
is slated to recruit its first batch of
freshmen for the 2005-2006 academic
year. The Ministry of Education
(MOE) has approved on April 15 that
TKU can take in 250 new students, but
TKU prefers to start with 200 students.
Dr. Flora C.I. Chang, president
of Tamkang University, said Lanyang
campus would model itself after
Oxford and Cambridge Universities for
their campus-residence education mode
and cultivate the students to meet the
demand of first-class manpower needed
for our country’s future development.
Both the College of Career
Development and the College of
Research and Development of
Globalization will be instituted
to oversee four departments,
including Department of Information
Software, Department of Information
Communication and Technology
Management, Department of Multiculture and Languages, and Department
of Global Politics and Economics.
Each of the departments will take in 50
students.
Belonging to the night
school, the Department of Applied
Foreign Languages under the College
of Community Development will
postpone its recruitment of 50 students
due to the on-going construction on
the campus which might become a
safety hazard for students attending
class at night. Any student from either
a normal high school or vocational
school participating in the Exams of
College Designated Courses can choose
to study at the Lanyang campus based
on their own interest.

“e-Guide Dog”
on Test Run
The “e-Guide Dog” project
is all but finished, according to Dr.
Ming-da Huang, director of the
Information Processing Center.
Sponsored by Hewlett-Packard,
the “e-Guide Dog” is a major
project of the Center, with big
help coming from the Department
of Information Management, the
Department of Transportation
Management, the Department of
Architecture, and the Department
o f Wa t e r R e s o u r c e s a n d
Environmental Engineering.
Dr. Huang pointed out
that the purpose of the “e-Guide
Dog” is to help blind students find
their way on the campus. With
the help of the “e-Guide Dog,”
blind students, by logging on to
the Center of Resources for the
Blind through the Internet, can
immediately find out where they
are on the campus and reach their
destinations without any difficulty.

English Majors to Take
Language Proficiency Test on May 21
The English Department is
going to give a TOEFL-style test to
all the students who officially take
Freshman Conversation, Sophomore
Conversation, or Junior Speech
classes. Any senior who takes the
above said courses should also
participate in the test. A makeup
test is only available to those who
are scheduled to take the General
English Proficiency Test (GEPT)
on the same day and sign up with
Charlene the assistant before that
day.
The score from the listening
comprehension section of the
TOEFL-style test will account for 20
percent of their final grade in any of
the above mentioned courses being
taken this semester. Students are
reminded to use a 2B pencil when
taking the exam. Exempted from
the test are those who have taken the
official TOEFL exam and present in
advance the original transcript of the
exam to Charlene at the department
office.

COMPLETADA CONSTRUCCIÓN
DE LA NUEVA FACULTAD DE
LENGUAS EXTRANJERAS
La nueva sede de la Facultad de
Lenguas Extranjeras est’a ya finalizada
y pronto comenzará el traslado de los
departamentos y profesores, con lo
que este verano ya será utilizada por
alumnos, empleados y docentes.
La construcción alberga 128 oficinas
de investigación para profesores.
El Segundo piso se dedicará a los
departamentos de Ruso e Inglés; el
tercer piso para los departamentos
de Español y Japonés; el cuarto piso
para el Departamento de Francés
y el Decanato; el quinto piso para
el Departamento de Alemán, la
Oficina de Educación e Intercambios
Internacionales y el Vicerrectorado
de Asuntos Académicos; el sexto y
séptimo piso se dedicarán a oficinas
para profesores. Con el fin de fomentar
el uso d e lenguas extranjeras, en cada
uno de los departamentos se deberá
hablar el idioma correspondiente.

Bientôt seront terminés les travaux
dans le nouveau bâtiment de la Faculté
des langues étrangères, et à l’approche
de son inauguration, l’Université
Tamkang déclare année des langues
étrangères celle qui est marquée
par cette construction .Ce nouvel
environnement devrait renforcer la
cohésion au sein des six départements
que contient la Faculté, a indiqué la
doyenne, Madame Sung Mei-Hua.
Nous souhaitons ardemment et bientôt
en voir les manifestations concrètes , à
travers un travail plus efficace et plus
constructif, a-t-elle ajouté.
Madame Sung a programmé, pour
le courant « le mois des langues
internationales », une série d’activités
: théâtre, danse, cuisine , etc. , d’autres
seront annoncées pour le mois de juin.
En outre, de nouvelles orientations
seront données aux instituts de
recherche, excepté ceux d’anglais et
de français : seront créés deux cours
de traduction et d’interprétation dont
l’objectif est de développer chez les
étudiants des aptitudes nécessaires à la
maîtrise des langues étudiées.
Depuis des années, les professeurs des
six départements se dévouent corps
et âme à « former » des étudiants qui,
diplômés, vont jouer un rôle dans

“ADIÓS MUCHACHOS” DEL
DEPARTAMENTO DE ESPAÑOL
Los alumnos de cuarto curso del
Departamento de Español, ayudados
por la profesora Lucía Chen, se
atrevieron con la adaptación teatral
de una popular novela del uruguayo
residente en Cuba, Daniel Chavaría:
“Adiós muchachos”.
Para quienes no estén familiarizado
con la literatura actual de
Latinoamérica, mencionaremos
que Daniel Chavarría (1933) es un
novelista y guionista, que dicta clases
grâce au « Bâtiment des langues
étrangères » qui leur sera bientôt
livré, ces profs vont pouvoir mettre à
profit cet espace pour se réorganiser,
se concerter et donner le meilleur
d’eux-mêmes par des recherches
ponctuelles et d’envergure. L’intérêt
de celles-ci rejaillira sans doute et sur
le public enseigné et sur la politique
de mondialisation promue par notre
université.
Quand la France redevient un
modèle pour les Etats-Unis
Les femmes françaises ne grossissent
pas ( French women dont’t get fat) : tel
est le titre de ce livre, best-seller dans
un pays où un tiers des adultes sont
obèses, qui figure actuellement dans
les vitrines de toutes les librairies de
Washington ( et le président G.W.Bush
ne peut l’ignorer). Il explique aux
Américains « le secret de manger pour
le plaisir » que possèdent les Français.
La mondialisation est bien cela : la
circulation des idées, un apprentissage
mutuel, où chacun a la possibilité
d’utiliser les bonnes recettes des

indices pour faire un bilan
pondéral :
1.L’indice de masse corporelle (IMC)
. Il mesure le rapport poids/taille. Il s’

Adiós muchachos es una obra
desenfadada y crítica, en la que
Alicia, una joven cubana, practica
la prostitución mientras sueña en
cazar a un marido adinerado. En sus
recorridos de “caza”, suele hacerse
obtient en divisant le poids par la taille

lycéens décernent un prix littéraires ?
La France aime les prix littéraires, et
il y a une saison pour cela : Fémina,
Renaudot, Médicis, Interallié. Le
plus célèbre des récompenses, c’
est le Goncourt. Entre la fin octobre
et la mi-décembre, ce sont près d’
une dizaine de prix qui sont remis
par les professionnels de l’édition,
par les journalistes , ou encore par les
lycéens. Car depuis 1988, il y a aussi
le Goncourt des lycéens dont le jury
est totalement indépendant de celui du
Goncourt. A travers toute la France,
une cinquantaine de classes se livrent
à un véritable marathon de lecture
avant de désigner un tiercé gagnant.
Ensuite, un jury national ,composé
de délégués des différentes classes,
se réunit à Rennes pour délibérer. Le
prix Goncourt des lycéens 2004 a été
attribué à Philippe Grimbert pour son
roman : Un secret. Vive la lecture !

Europareise
Präsidentin Flora C. Chang hat
Ende April einige der Partnerinstitutionen der Tamkang Universität in
Europa besucht. Sie wurde begleitet
von Vizepräsident Feng, Prof. Lily
Chen, der Chefin des Büros für internationale Erziehung, und Prof. Peter
Tzou, dem Direktor des Europainstituts.
Erste Station der Reise war Oxford.
Das dortige Büro des CSGCD hatte
einen sehr dichten Terminkalender
für zwei Besuchstage vorbereitet.
Die Delegation führte ein Gespräch
mit Dr. Paul Flather, dem Generalsekretär von Europaeum, sie besuchte
Herford College, Mansfield College
und Lady Margaret Hall. Am Vormittag des zweiten Tages besuchte sie
Oxford Brookes University.
Viel Zeit für Touristisches gab es
nicht, ein wenig aber doch. Der erste
Abend galt einem Spaziergang durch
Oxford mit abschließendem Essen in
der „Perch“, einem Landgasthof etwas außerhalb von Oxford. Der Weg
dorthin führt durch die „Port Meadows“, einem seit Jahrhunderten na-
turbelassenen Biotop, das vor allem
für die frei weidenden Pferde und die
Vielzahl von Vogelarten bekannt ist.
Nach dem Abendessen kehrte die
Delegation zurück in das Büro des
CSGCD, das für die Gäste eine Party mit langjährigen und auch neuen
Freunden in Oxford organisiert hatte.
Zu müde, um noch recht viel Wein
trinken zu können, haben sich die
Reisenden aus Tamkang dabei doch
gut unterhalten. Vizepräsident Feng
traf dort sogar einen Oxford Don
der Ingenieurwissenschaften, der in
Stanford beim gleichen Lehrer studiert hatte wie er.
Die nächsten Stationen der Reise
waren Köln und Bonn. Vizepräsident
Feng kehrte von dort aus nach Taiwan zurück. Die anderen Mitglieder
der Delegation reisten weiter nach
Paris und Lyon.
Kurz nach der Rückkehr gab es sogleich ein Wiedersehen. Prof. Matthias Winninger, der neue Rektor der
Universität Bonn, und Frau KrickauRichter, die Leiterin des Akademischen Auslandsamts, befanden sich
auf einer Reise durch Ostasien und
statteten dem Tamsui Campus einen
Besuch ab.

интересные мероприятия:

купить книги и сувениры из разных
стран, отведать национальные
бл юд а . Д л я с туд е н то в д ру г и х
факультетов это хорошая
во зм ож н о с т ь р а с ш и р и т ь с во й
кругозор, познакомиться с иными
языками и культурами.
Следующий учебный год объявлен годом иностранных языков

здания колледжа ино странных
языков. В конце мая кафедры всех
факультетов, а также преподаватели
могут переехать на новое место.
С сентября следующего учебного
года занятия будут проходит в
этом здании. Директор колледжа,
доктор Сун Мэй-хуа, отметила,
что у студентов и преподавателей
колледжа ино странных языков
появится прекрасная возможность
для знакомства и общения, потому
ч то в с е м ы буд е м р а б от ат ь и
учиться под одной крышей!
Уже готов план мероприятий на
будущий учебный год. В сентябре
месяце начнёт работу программа
изучения иностранных языков в
интернете. На специальном сайте,
созданном нашим университетом,
будут представлены все ше сть
языков, изучаемых студентами
колледжа: английский, японский,
французский, испанский, немецкий,
русский. Учебная программа,
созданная в режиме мультимедиа,
включает краткое представление
кул ьту р ы и н а ц и о н а л ь н ы х
о собенно стей каждой ст раны;
кратко е объяснение о сновных
грамматических понятий; тексты
д л я ч т е н и я и п р и м е р ы ж и во й
разговорной речи. Весь учебный
материал сопровождается
переводом на китайский язык.

Kriegsende
Zum Gedenken an das Ende des
Zweiten Weltkriegs vor sechzig Jahren veranstaltete das Institut für
Slawistik ein interdisziplinäres Colloquium. Den Hauptvortrag der eröffnenden Sektion hielt der Gesandte
Russlands in Taiwan. Es folgten
zwei weitere Sektionen, in denen die
Bedeutung des Zweiten Weltkriegs
sowohl sachlich als auch methodisch
in unterschiedlichen Perspektiven
erörtert wurde.
Worte, wie immer sie auch gewählt
sein mögen, reichen nie hin, um von
der Wirklichkeit eines Krieges Kunde zu geben. Das Colloquium wurde
deshalb ergänzt durch eine Photoausstellung, in der man das Gesicht
des Krieges in den Gesichtern der
von ihm betroffenen Menschen studieren konnte.
Direkt oder indirekt ist der Zweite
Weltkrieg noch immer erlebte Geschichte. Zu den bewegendsten Ausstellungsstücken gehörte ein Photo,
auf dem Prof. Pisarevs Vater zu
sehen war, der bei der Verteidigung
Moskaus als Partisan hinter den
deutschen Linien kämpfte.
Ein Onkel von mir befand sich zur
gleichen Zeit auf der Gegenseite. Er
wäre lieber nicht dort gewesen. Dies
gilt auch für einen anderen Onkel,
der im fast noch jugendlichen Alter
im Süden Russlands war. Leider habe
ich ihn nie kennengelernt. Er ist heute noch vermisst. Irgendwie kenne
ich ihn aber doch. Ich habe seine
Briefe und Tagebücher gelesen.
Zu den Vortragenden des Colloquiums gehörte auch Gilles Boileau,
der ehemalige Leiter der Französischen Abteilung. Die Russische Abteilung, die Französische Abteilung
und die Deutsche Abteilung arbeiten
seit Jahren eng zusammen. Viele
Veranstaltungen des CSGCD wurden vor allem von Vertretern dieser
Abteilungen bestritten. Daraus sind
enge Freundschaften entstanden,
vor allem aber ein kontinuierlicher
Diskurs über historische und zeitgeschichtliche Erfahrungen, in dem so
Manches aufhörte, selbstverständlich
zu sein, und Anderes, Unerwartetes,
selbstverständlich wurde. Ich möchte
diese Gespräche nicht mehr missen.

студийная запись диалогов. Для
того чтобы герои учебных текстов
заговорили, пришлось привлечь
всех преподавателей и студентов
(Юлиана со 2 курса и Дашу с 4-го)
нашего факультета. Возможно,
вы догадаетесь, чьими голосами
говорят Ирина, Лия, Юра, Тарас и

Выставка тайваньских художниц
В университет ском Цент ре
изящных искусств Кэрри Чжан
с мая по июль будет проходить
выставка работ тайваньских
художниц. Это живопись разных
стилей (масло, акварель, тушь,
клеевые краски) и скульптура.
Дух романтизма и любовь к родному
острову – вот что объединяет всех
участниц нынешней выставки.
На втором этаже представлены
р а б о т ы Я н Ч ж э н - и в т е х н и ке
флористики (картины из сухих
цветов и трав). Сейчас флористика,
зародившаяся во второй половине
XIX века в Англии, приобретает
всё большую популярность как
на Тайване, т ак и в Ро ссии. В
Тамкане есть студенческий кружок
по изучению этого искусства, все
желающие могут по с етить его
занятия – каждый вторник, с 19 до
22 часов, в Колледже литературы,
аудитория 304.
