Christmas Pot Luck
Party
The annual Christmas Pot Luck Party
was held on the 21st of December.
Many townspeople and foreigners
from four different countries
participated.
The participants played many
Christmas games which are popular
in western countries such as☆ ‘pass
the parcel’ and ‘pin the nose on the
reindeer’.
After the games, we had lunch
prepared☆ by all the participants.
There was a variety of dishes from
sushi to pumpkin pie.
During lunch, the participants
listened to an African taiko drum
performance and an English choral
group.
There was also a Christmas story
told with large pictures for the
children. Santa arrived and handed
out presents to all the children. In the
end we sang Christmas carols
together.
There will be another Christmas Pot
Luck Party this December too! Won’t
you join us in ☆ celebrating
Christmas?
Beginners Article ~初級記事 ~
毎年行われるクリスマス・ポットラック・
パーティーは１２月２１日に開催されま
した。多くの町民や４カ国の外国人が参加
しました。
「プレゼント回しゲーム」や「トナカイに
鼻を付けるゲーム」など、欧米で人気のあ
るクリスマスゲームをしました。
ゲームの後、参加者全員が準備したランチ
を食べました。寿司からパンプキンパイま
で様々な料理がありました。
ランチの間に、英語のコーラスやアフリカ
太鼓の演奏を聞きました。
そして、子どものためにクリスマスの紙芝
居もありました。サンタが登場し、子ども
にプレゼントを配りました。最後に、一緒
にクリスマスキャロルを歌いました。
今年の１２月もまたクリスマス・ポットラ
ック・パーティーがあります。クリスマス
を私達と一緒に祝いませんか？

Christmas in Australia
The tradition of celebrating Christmas
comes from Europe where it is very
cold in December. That is why Santa
wears warm clothes and rides on a
sled to get through the snow.
This tradition of celebrating Christmas
continued in Australia, even though it is
summer in December. Some people
eat traditional European Christmas
food such as the flaming brandy
pudding. Others prefer ☆ to eat
colder food such as chilled prawns.
Around 40% percent of Australians
are not Christian, however most
people celebrate Christmas regardless
☆ of religion.
On Christmas day (the 25th of
December) children wake up and open
their presents which are under the
tree. A family will celebrate together
by eating all day, either inside the
family home or outside in a park or on
the beach.
Almost all of the shops are shut on
Christmas day. It is the biggest holiday
of the year in Australia.
１２月が寒いヨーロッパからクリスマスを祝
う伝統が来ています。そのため、サンタは
暖かい服を着て、雪の上を滑れるようにそ
りを乗っています。
１２月が夏にも関わらず、オーストラリアで
はクリスマスの伝統が続けました。火が付
いたブランディーケーキなど、伝統的なヨ
ーロッパのクリスマス料理を食べる人がい
ます。冷やした茹でエビなど、冷たい料理
を食べることを選ぶ人もいます。
オーストラリア人の約４０％はキリスト教で
はありませんが、宗教に関わらずクリスマ
スを祝う人が殆どです。
子どもがクリスマスの日（１２月２５日）に目
を覚めると、ツリーの下に置いてあるプレゼ
ントを開けます。家の中、またはビーチや
公園で一日中食べ続け、家族それぞれ
が一緒に祝います。
クリスマスに殆どの店が閉まっています。
オーストラリアの１年で一番大きな行事で
す。

Australia×Okagaki
Quiz Night
On the 19th of December a quiz night
was held at the eastern community hall
in Okagaki town.
A quiz night is a popular style of event
in English speaking countries. At a quiz
night, participants are put into☆
groups and together they must try to
answer a series of trivia questions.
They are a great way to make new
friends and to participate in a quiz
even if you are a shy person.
Quiz night participants are usually
adults and they are often held at
pubs.
Quiz nights are also a popular style of
event for fundraising as they are
cheap to organize and it is not unusual
for there to be an entry fee. If the quiz
night is organized for a charity, then
organizations will often donate prizes
to encourage people to pay the entry
fee.
The quiz night held in Okagaki town
was free. The questions in the quiz
were about Okagaki town and
Australia. Each team worked together
to come up with☆ their answers.
１２月１９日に岡垣町にある東部公民館で
クイズナイトが開催されました。
クイズナイトとは英語圏で人気のあるイベ
ントの種類です。クイズナイトでは参加者が
グループに分けられ、一緒に豆知識につ
いての問題を解答していきます。クイズナ
イトは新しい友達をつくる方法や、恥ずかし
がり屋さんでもクイズに参加できる方法とし
てとても良いです。
クイズナイトはバーで行われることが多く、
参加者は通常大人です。
クイズナイトの開催にはあまりお金がかか
らず、参加費がある場合が多いので、募
金するための人気があるイベントの仕方で
す。慈善団体のために企画されているクイ
ズナイトであれば、参加費を払うまでの興
味を人に持ってもらうように、多くの組織が
賞品を寄付します。
岡垣町で行われたクイズナイトは無料でし
た。クイズの問題は岡垣町やオーストラリ
アについての問題でした。各チームは協
力し合って解答を考え出しました。
