For years, caffeine has been a ‘drug’ in many cultures. Caffeine has been
1
"
considered socially acceptable because it is found in drinks like tea or coffee.
People who consume a lot of caffeine-based drinks may think they are addicted to
#
them. But if they stop using such drinks, they will experience only mild symptoms
of withdrawal* for a few days. Caffeine is a bitter substance found in coffee, tea,
$
chocolate, and some medicines. It has many effects on the body, including helping
%
to activate the central nervous system. This can make people more awake and give
&
them increased energy.
2
Many people claim they cannot start their day without a cup or two of coffee.
'
Some people drink coffee throughout the day. Even young people who may not
touch coffee are still putting caffeine into their bodies when they have energy
drinks, which have high amounts of caffeine.
3
Coffee has been one of the world’s most popular drinks
perhaps the most
popular. Results of a large American study may make it even more popular. The
study showed that drinking coffee might help reduce the risk of throat cancer.
(

4
Researchers questioned 970,000 American men and women who took part in
the 30-year-long Cancer Prevention Study. One of the questions was about their
use of coffee. The researchers found that people who drank about four cups of
coffee a day reduced their risk of throat cancer by 49 percent compared to those
who had little or no coffee.
5
Throat cancer is an aggressive form of cancer, and it is difficult to treat. This
type of cancer is rare in the United States, but it is among the top ten forms of
cancer worldwide. Janet Hildebrand of the American Cancer Society led the study.
!
She says the less coffee someone drank, the higher their risk of throat cancer. And
the more coffee someone drank, the lower their risk. “Coffee is thought to have
substances that benefit the human body. So the risk of cancer went down a little
"
bit with each cup. The lowest risk was found for people who drink four, five, six
cups per day,” she says. Researchers want to examine whether coffee drinking
#
helps people who already have throat cancer.
