She was wonderful. Jack was only one of many men who were running after her, and he was so ①ordinary that nobody showed any interest in him. At the end of the party, Jack invited Debbie to have coffee with him. She was surprised but, being polite, she agreed. They sat in a nice coffee shop. He was too nervous to say anything. She was not comfortable, and she thought to herself, Please, let me( ② ). As they sat silently with their coffee, Jack suddenly asked the waiter, Would you please give me some salt? Everybody looked at him. Who puts salt in their coffee? So strange! His face turned red but still, he put the salt in his coffee and drank it. Debbie asked him, Why did you do that? Jack answered, When I was a little boy, I lived near the sea. I liked the taste of the sea, just like the taste of salty coffee. Now every time I have salty coffee, I always think of my childhood and my hometown. I miss my hometown so much. I miss my parents who are still living there. ③Debbie was deeply touched. They were his true feelings, from the bottom of his heart. She thought a man who could talk about his feelings must be a man who loves home, cares about home, and understands the responsibility of home. Then she also started to speak about her hometown far away, her childhood and her family. It was a really nice talk, and also a beautiful beginning to their story. They often went out on a date. Debbie found that Jack was actually ④a man who met all her demands. He had a kind heart and was warm and careful. He was such a good person and she had almost missed him! Thanks to his salty coffee, their story was just like a beautiful love story. The princess married the prince, and then they lived a happy life together. And, every time she made coffee for him, she put some salt in it,[ ⑤ ] . After 40 years, Jack passed away. He left Debbie a letter which said, My dearest, please forgive me. ⑥Forgive the lie I’ve told my whole life. This was the only time I lied to you ― the salty coffee. Remember the first time we dated? I was so nervous that although I actually wanted some sugar, I said salt. It was hard for me to( ⑦ )the words I had said, so I just went ahead. I never thought ⑧that would be the start of our communication! I tried to tell you the truth many times in my life, but I was too afraid to do that, as I had promised never to lie to you. Now I’m dying. I am afraid of nothing, so I can tell you the truth. I don’t (4) BD−H 平成24年度 本郷高等学校 一般入学試験問題 like salty coffee. What a strange, bad taste! But I have had salty coffee my whole life! Since I met you, I never feel sorry for what I did to stay with you. Having you with me is my biggest happiness. If I could live a second time, I would still want to know you and have you for my whole life, even if I had to drink salty coffee again. Debbie s tears made the letter totally wet.
