!!!!!Translation! is! a! way! to! transfer! the! Original* Language! (OL)! to! the! Target* Language! (TL)! for! the!
native!speaker/reader!of!TL,!so!that!he!or!she!can!understand!whatever!has!been!spoken!or!written!in!
OL.! ! OL! and! TL! can! be! any! two! languages! including! two! dialects! (such! as! Okinawa! dialect! and! Tokyo!
dialect)! or! two! diachronic! stages! (such! as! Old! Japanese! and! Modern! Japanese)! of! one! and! the! same!
language.!!!
!!!!!When!OL!is!translated!to!TL!the!translator!is!usually!not!a!native!speaker/writer!of!OL!but!a!person!
whose! TL! proficiency! is! superior! because! ultimately! the! translator! has! to! be! highly! sophisticated! in!
his/her!own!language.!!Translation!should!be!relatively!easy!if!OL*and!TL!are!typologically!close!as!in!
the! case! of! translation! between! Korean! and! Japanese.! However,! if! OL! and! TL! are! typologically! or!!
historically! not! related! as! in! the! case! of! Japanese! and! English,! translation! becomes! relatively! harder.!
The! degree! of! difficulty! also! depends! on! the! genre! of! the! OL! text! to! be! translated.! Scientific,!
social'scientific,!and!academic!work!is!known!to!be!relatively!easier!than!literary!work.!!In!this!paper!I!
will!use!literary!works!''!especially!novels!''!which!are!the!hardest!genre!to!translate.!My!objective!of!
this!paper!is!to!show!that!translation!misses!something!cognitively!important!in!the!OL!even!if!a!given!
translation!is!of!high!quality!in!terms!of!skills!and!artisticity.!But!what!shouldn’t!be!misunderstood!is!
that! I! have! no! intention! whatsoever! of! belittling! the! value! and! existence! of! translation! itself.! ! On! the!
contrary,! I! am! well! aware! that! work! of! translation! ranging! from! scientific! literature,! philosophy,!

2.!!!Phonetic!Loss!in!Translation.!
251.!!Translation!of!poetry.!
!!!!!Phonetic!inventory!of!each!language!differs!from!language!to!language.!No!two!languages!or!for!that!
matter!no!two!dialects!share!exactly!the!same!phonetic!inventory.!Roughly!speaking,!Japanese!has!five!
vowels!and!twelve!consonants,!whereas!English!has!twenty!consonants!and!twelve!vowels.!And!sounds!
are! arranged! in! each! language! according! to! its! own! accentual/tonal! and! phonotactic! rules,! producing!
quite! different! acoustic! effects.! It! is! quite! natural! that! sound! is! almost! totally! lost! in! translation.!!
Translation! of! poetry! makes! the! most! effective! use! of! sound! inventory! of! the! poet’s! language,! and!
therefore,! has! been! regarded! hardest.! In! spite! of! such! enormous! challenge! there! are! a! surprising!
number!of!Western!poetries!have!been!translated!into!Japanese.!!Look!at!one!particular!translation!of!
poetry!called!“Chanson!de!l’automn”!(Autumn!Song)!(1866)!by!Paul!Verlaine.!The!English!translations!

What will be lost in translation? With focus on cognitive problems

Summary
No matter how translation has been meticulously done, many things will be bound to be lost in the
process of translating Language A into Language B (your native language or something close to it . But
translation is indispensable to a person who doesn’t know Language A. In my talk I will discuss what will
be cognitively lost in translation from Japanese novels into English. Naturally sound based on auditory
sense and orthography, morphology and syntax based on visual sense will be mostly lost. Notice that both
of them involve our cognitive perception. In spite of total loss of sound in translation of poetic texts in
which sound plays crucial roles they have been frequently and widely translated. The original
morphology and syntax will be also lost in translation. To simply put, FORM will be totally lost, but
MEANING alone will be translated. Translation destroys basic combination of FORM (signifiant) and
MEANING (signifié). Yet, translation has survived from time immemorial, primarily because not
everybody can easily learn the original language and read it and depending on the genre of the text,
translation is satisfactory as long as it is accurate. In other words one has to satisfy himself/herself as long
as MEANING has been adequately transferred from Language A to Language B.
I will briefly touch on translation of perception-based Japanese metaphor, dialects and culture into
English, before I discuss something cognitively lost in translation from written Japanese (especially
literary work) into English – loss of deeper COGNITIVE MEANING expressed explicitly in the original
Japanese language. There are many complex layers to what will be lost in translation, but the present talk
will discuss specifically shift phenomena such as number shift, tense shift, formality shift, person shift,
and modality shift --- shifts that are almost totally missing in English. Those cognitive phenomena which
explicitly reflect the original writer’s cognition are almost permanently lost in translation into English
simply because they are missing in the English language.
Finally I will discuss pedagogical role of translation in reading education. More specifically I will argue
that both learners and instructors (1) should know the limitation of translation, (2) should realize how
translation can lead to contrastive cognitive study of the students’ native language and Japanese, (3)
should learn ecstasy and agony of translation, and (4) should realize how important it is to read the
original text.
