The next generation of Cocktail Class racers
by Shannon Haley
Caroline Fuccella has spent her
entire life on Urbanna Creek. This
rising freshman is often found boating in Urbanna harbor with her dad
Lawrence, mom Jo, and older sister
Alexandra. Anyone can see that this
close-knit family has deep roots and
a great appreciation for the water.
Whether it is fishing, cruising or
even racing, Caroline is always game
for anything and everything that is
water-related.
In 2012 when her father joined the
Cocktail Class Wooden Boat Racing
Association (CCWBRA) and began
building his Cocktail Class boat
the “Brass Monkey,” it was no surprise that his girls became heavily
involved in the process. Both Caroline and Alexandra would often be
seen at the shop helping Lawrence
sand and paint as the deadline for
the first Urbanna Cup was quickly
approaching. The family effort
helped ensure that the boat was race
ready in time for the big inaugural
event in May 2013.
Since then, Caroline and her sister
continued to stay involved by attending races and cheering on their dad.
If you know their parents, it is no surprise these young ladies at the ages
of 15 (Alexandra) and 13 (Caroline)
already have a tremendous work
ethic. Not only did they work hard to
help build the boat, they have been
active at races, helping not only their
dad with his boat, but other racers
with their boats by providing an extra
hand when needed, transporting tools
from one boat to another, helping to
launch boats, etc. They are both such
a presence at these races that they
have really become part of the team
in their own right.
In 2014 all of Caroline’s time
and effort finally paid off. This year
CCWBRA developed a youth program and Caroline was quick to sign
up. Participation is limited to family
members of CCWBRA members

Chris Riddick, the 2014
National Champion Cocktail
Class Racer in the 8-horsepower division, was erroneously
referred to as Steve Riddick in
an article that appeared in the

The Sentinel regrets any inconvenience caused by this error.
Caroline and Lawrence Fuccella with the #101 “Brass Monkey”
who are between the ages of 12-16.
Participants must meet all age and
license requirements for the operation of a powerboat in the state where
the race is held, and they must complete a USCF Boater’s Safety Course
in their home state. Having met these
and other requirements, Caroline was
ready for the first-ever youth race to
be held at the CCWBRA National
Championship event in Rock Hall,
Md., on August 16, 2014.
The national race consisted of
a total of four youths—three boys
and Caroline. The qualifying heat
had two boats compete around the

course for two races. Each boat had a
turn on the middle lane. As the horn
blew, Caroline bolted off the line
and around the course, winning both
qualifying races. She then advanced
to the finals against the young man
who won the second heat. Her competitor won the first race but crossed
lanes on the second race, resulting in
a tie. Both were awarded first place
cups for the youth event.
When asked what is her favorite
part of racing the Cocktail Class
boats, Caroline replied, “I like being
on the water and I like the speed. I
really like to go fast!” She also com-
mented that she thinks it is funny that
one day she might get to race against
her dad in this sport.
As for Alexandra, she has been
very busy with her summer job
at Shores and Ruark Seafood in
Urbanna. She said she might want
to race one day, but for now she is
happy cheering on her dad and sister
and helping at the events.
It has been such a pleasure getting to know Caroline and Alexandra through the Urbanna race team.
These young ladies are kind, polite
and generous while maintaining their
own unique personalities that have us
all laughing and smiling the entire
time we are in their presence. I have
no doubt these two can accomplish
anything they set their minds to and
more.
Once Caroline is 16 she can race
the Women’s Class. Fellow racer
Kenleighe Longest and I keep
joking that we better keep practicing
because Caroline will indeed be serious competition when she reaches
the age requirement to compete with
the adults. In the meantime, keep an
eye out for Caroline racing around
Urbanna Creek in the #101 “Brass
Monkey” and preparing for the next
competition. There is no telling what
the future might hold for this talented
and fearless young racer.

MHS volleyball teams host
Northumberland tonight
The Middlesex High JV
Lady Chargers have started
their volleyball season on a
strong note with a win over
Essex in a scrimmage on
August 21.
The JV team has a good mix
of players with six returners
and four newcomers. “This is
a strong group of girls who
are already blending well
together,” said coach Jessica
Morris.
Returning sophomores and
tri-captains include Hailey
Walton, Maddie Norwood and
Meghan Shores.
Walton will see most of
her time in the setter’s position. “She has great hands and
is a very consistent server,”
said Morris.
Norwood will see time as
an outside hitter. “Maddie has
come a long way since her 8thgrade year and she is always
the loudest on and off the
court,” said Morris. “Her hitting is really coming around.”
Shores “is a versatile player
and will play anywhere she is
asked,” said Morris. She will
see some time as a middle and
outside hitter this year.
Returning freshmen include
Brooke Daniel, Chloe Hodges
and Haley Revere.
Daniel will be a middle
hitter. “Her serves and passing have become more consistent since last year and she
is always ready for the ball to
come her way,” said Morris.
Hodges suffered an injury
early in the season last year,
but she is very motivated and
is working hard to perfect
her passing skills this year,
said Morris. Hodges will see
time as an outside hitter. “She
also communicates very well
on and off the court,” added
Morris.
Revere will see time as an
outside hitter. “Haley is working very hard on her passing
and she has improved each day
since the beginning of practice,” said Morris.
Newcomers, who are all
8th-graders, include Hannah
Duke, Lyndsay Greene, Macie
Daniel and Sarah Walton.
Duke will see time as a
setter. “Hannah has been
working hard since day one to
learn the game of volleyball
and she doesn’t give up,” said
Morris.
Greene will see time as a
middle hitter. “Lyndsay has
shown determination and
works hard every day at practice,” said Morris.
M. Daniel will see time as a
setter and a hitter. “Macie adds
some height to the middle,
but is interested in setting as
well,” said Morris.
Walton will be a setter and
a hitter. “Sarah’s hitting has
improved and she is working
on becoming a strong setter,”
said Morris.
The Lady Chargers varsity and JV volleyball teams
opened their season at
Rappahannock on August
26. Middlesex will host
Northumberland on Thursday,
August 28. The JVs play at 6
p.m. and are followed by the
varsity at 7:30 p.m.
MHS golfers down Mathews
The Middlesex High golf
team hosted Mathews at
Piankatank River Golf Club
last on August 21 and hauled
in their second victory of the
season, 197-210, in a 9-hole
match.
Greg Pitts led the attack
shooting a 45, closely followed by Kyle McNamee’s 46.
Mason Duke and Mason Phillips rounded out the 4 lowest
scores with 53s. Chris Blake
“showed improvement” hauling in a 56 and Brian Major’s
63 rounded out the Chargers 6
scores. “We’re getting there,”
said Coach Greg Harrow, “but
we’ve still got a lot of work to
do in the next few weeks. Fortunately we have 10 eligible
golfers this year and we plan
to continue to rotate players in
and out of the lineup until we
can find solidity in our 1 to 6
spots.”
On Tuesday, the Charger
golfers visited Northumberland
at Quinton Oaks Golf Course
in Callao and were defeated
176-190. “This course is wide
open and I expected us to be in
the 170s today,” stated Harrow.
“We just struggled on approach
shots and the greens fooled us.”
For the Chargers, Pitts battled for a bogey golf 44, while
McNamee and Duke followed
with 48s. Chris Blake rounded
out the four lowest with a 50.
Phillips (51) and Luke Lawson
(52) rounded out the match.
The Chargers were also
excited to be able to play their
8th graders in a sub-match
with the Indians junior varsity
squad. “While they were only
able to capture 7 complete
holes in the match, it was a
great experience for them to
be in match play against other
competitors,” said Harrow.
Hunter Ward shot a 7-hole
38, MacLean Thomas a 40,
Matthew Wilson a 41 and
Avary Payne a 45. “This is
a tremendous start for these
young fellas,” noted Harrow.
“Our future depends on the
youth and these guys are doing
great so far this year. I am
very proud of the way they are
working hard to improve their
game!”

wanted to be good neighbors to
the community that we serve,”
said store manager Tina Clouatre. “This Project A-Game Grant
lets us play a part in local kids’
success, and I can’t think of a
better way to give back.”
The grant is made possible
through 7-Eleven’s Project
A-Game youth outreach program. Project A-Game’s mission is to help kids develop
their full potential by promoting academics and athletics,
and the values and the life skills
they teach, as a path to success. The program allows local

Application forms are being
distributed to all households
with a letter informing households of the availability of free
or reduced price meals for
their children. Applications
are also available at the principal’s office in each school
and at the central office. To
apply for free or reduced
price meals, households must
only fill out one application
per household and return it to
the school division. Applications may be submitted at any
time during the school year.
The information households
provide on the application
will be used for determining
eligibility and verification
of data. Applications may be
verified at any time during
the school year by school or
other program officials. For
school officials to determine
eligibility for free or reduced
price benefits, households
receiving SNAP benefits or
TANF only have to list their
child(ren)’s name and SNAP
or TANF case number and an
adult household member must
sign the application. Households who do not list a SNAP
or TANF case number, including WIC households, must list
the names of all household
members, the amount and frequency of the income received
by each household member,
and the last four digits of the
social security number of the
adult household member who
signs the application. If the
household member does not
have a social security number,
the household member must
indicate that a social security
number is not available. The
application must be signed by
an adult household member in
order to be approved.
Under the provisions of the
free and reduced price meal
policy, Supervisor of Nutrition
Services Margo Bridge, will
review applications and determine eligibility. An application for free or reduced price
meals cannot be approved
unless it is complete. Households dissatisfied with the
ruling of the eligibility determining official may wish to
discuss the decision with the
official on an informal basis.
Households wishing to make
a formal appeal for a hearing
on the decision may make a
request either verbally or in
writing to: Dr. Thomas Taylor,
Superintendent, P.O. Box 205,
Saluda, VA 23149.
Households may apply for
free or reduced price meals
at any time during the school
year. If a household is not eligible now but has a change,
such as a decrease in household income, an increase
in household size, becomes
unemployed or qualifies for
SNAP or TANF, the household
should contact the school for
an application. Such changes
may make the children of the
household eligible for benefits
if the household’s income falls
at or below the Federal Income
Eligibility Guidelines.
Households that receive
SNAP benefits or TANF may
not have to complete an application for free of reduced price
student meals. School officials
will determine eligibility for
free meals based on documentation, obtained directly from
the Virginia Department of
Social Services, that a child
is a member of a household
currently receiving SNAP or
TANF. School officials will
notify these households in
writing of their eligibility.
Households who are notified
of their eligibility, but who
do not want their children to
receive free meals, must contact the school. SNAP and
TANF households must complete an application if they are
not notified in writing of their
eligibility within the first 10
days of the new school year.

“Join us as we discover the
people, culture and faith of
Thessaloniki in 51 A.D. and the
issues confronting the Christian
church there,” said a member of
the group. “It was a dark time,
for many Christians were being
persecuted for their faith and
they began to believe that the
return of Jesus Christ was near.
“Sound familiar? How are
we to walk the road of our
lives in such an ominous world
today? The women of that city
played a vital role in the church
and in their community; how
we function in our homes and
in our community as Christians
can be a powerful force when
we live as Paul says, as ‘children of the Light and children
of the day.’ ”

Sunday School begins Sept. 7
“Heaven is for Real Sunday
School” will begin Sunday,
September 7, from 9:30-10:30
a.m. at Lower United Methodist Church in Hartfield. These
lessons will help children in
grades 1-7 explore some of
their questions about heaven.
There also will be a class for
preschool ages 3-5.
Adults are invited to a coffee
time while their children attend
Heaven is for Real Sunday
School, or are also welcome in
any of the Adult Bible Study
classes.
“The lessons designed for
children in grades 1-7 will
engage them in understanding that heaven is truly real—
because they get to hear about
it from someone just like them
who’s experienced it,” said a
church spokesperson. “Each
session is conversation-oriented, allowing children to fully
participate and, most importantly, to own their beliefs.
“With games, activities and
interactive prayers, children
will have an unforgettable time
exploring the wonders of eternity with God. And best of all,
they’ll grow incredibly closer
to Jesus along the way,” said
the spokesperson. “So please
join us on September 7 in the
fellowship hall at 9:30 a.m. as
we begin our heavenly exploration!”

Cross recently to honor and
recognize the commitment and
dedication of Paul Sciacchitano
for his outstanding community
leadership and invaluable contribution as chairman of the
board.
Sciacchitano has served on
the chapter’s board of directors for over 20 years and as
board chairman for the past six
years. “His leadership, inspiration and vision have driven the
mission of the Red Cross and
funding to support the vital
services provided,” said Julie
Dudley, executive director. “In
his tenure, we have trained and
empowered our volunteers to
support the four core services
of blood, disaster, health and
safety and armed forces emergencies, and for that we are
truly grateful.”
Sciacchitano saw many benefits of non-profit partnering
to provide services and sustain
community awareness. During
his service, the Red Cross successfully partnered with the
Northern Neck Family YMCA
to provide training of their staff
and volunteers in lifeguarding, CPR/FA, water safety and
babysitting.

Foundation enabled the Red
Cross and the Northern Neck
Family YMCA to collaborate
in providing vital life-saving
skills. Through this program
638 second-graders to date
have received Red Cross “learn
to swim” lessons,” said Mark
Favazza of the Northern Neck
Family YMCA.
With a successful program, a
continuation of a grant enabled
the Northumberland County
Red Cross to partner with
the Northumberland Family
YMCA to expand the service
to their county. Both Red Cross
Chapters have successfully
gained funding of $43,500 to
introduce “learn to swim,” babysitting, and disaster preparedness into their five YMCA
summer camps.
A generator was purchased
to provide the Red Cross office
with vital power in a disaster, or
for use by the YMCA as a secondary shelter for the county.
Each of the six counties has
been provided with substantial
disaster supplies to be utilized
in shelters for the comfort of
county residents and was utilized in Hurricane Sandy by
276 residents who took refuge
in three shelters, said Doug
Monroe of Chesapeake Bank
Caring for Your Children
in the community, some as
their chairperson. “He has
taken responsibility in holding these offices to help them
succeed and always makes it
his business to know and fully
understand and agree with
the purpose and goals of each
organization,” said Dudley.
“With this sound background
he is armed with the information needed to help direct policies and to raise funds for their
long term existence. Without
Paul’s clear thinking, leadership skills and community
knowledge the goals of raising
over $12 million for Virginia
Quality Life to build a health,
education and fitness campus
to house the Rappahannock
General Hospital Sports &
Rehabilitation Center, Northern Neck Free Health Clinic,
The Northern Neck YMCA
and the River Counties Chapter of the American Red Cross
would never have begun or
been completed,” said Monroe.
Sciacchitano has also served
as a director of The River
Counties Community Foundation, which is creating a better
future for all by addressing the
community’s most critical or
persistent challenges, inclusively uniting people, institutions and resources. “Paul’s
leadership has been instrumental in supporting the Foundation in making a difference”
said Margaret Nost of the
Foundation.

On Sunday, August 31, at
the Unitarian Universalist Fellowship of the Rappahannock
(UUFR) Shirley Kinney will
present “We Got a Dream.”
Kinney will interview the last
of our group of $100 recipients to find out how they gave
away their money.
Last November, Bob Weekley and Kinney surprised 10
people in the congregation
by handing them an envelope with a $100 bill in it.
Their task was to give away
that $100 to make a difference in someone’s life. The
congregation has heard from
seven of the donors so far,
who have given their money
to the Haven, Kids First
Foundation, UUFR building expansion fund, and one
high school boy who needed
the correct shoes to be on the
track team. “Now we’ll discover who the other recipients
are,” said a program spokesperson. “What would you do
with that $100?”
The UUFR meets every
Sunday at 10:30 a.m. at 366
James Wharf Road in White
Stone. Coffee and refreshments will follow the service.
Jordan Blake recently spoke at
the Southside Rappahannock
Association and has been cited
as a future preacher.
The Adult Sunday School
Lesson is titled “Giving to
Others.” The background
scripture will come from 2
Corinthians 8:1-14.
A dinner and play will be
held Sunday, October 5, at 1:30
p.m. and 4 p.m. Those who
attend the dinner first will go to
the play second, and those that
attend the play first will go to
the dinner second.

Annapolis Yacht Sales South is new
dealer for two boat manufacturers
Annapolis Yacht Sales
South (AYSS) in Deltaville
has been appointed as the
Virginia dealer for Lagoon
Catamarans as well as Edgewater Boats. Annapolis Yacht
Sales South already represents
Beneteau Sail and Power,
Harbor Daysailers, Greenline
Hybrid, Monte Carlo Yachts,
Steiger Craft and Vanquish in
Virginia.
Jonathan Hutchings, manager/broker and spokesman
for Annapolis Yacht Sales
South, said the new dealership appointments come at a
significant time for the company, which is making a major
expansion into new markets.
“We are proud to have been
recognized by these high-end
manufacturers as a dealership
that can deliver a sales and service experience of the highest
quality. It is also a testament
to the small town of Deltaville
whose tagline is ‘Deltaville,
Boating Capital of the Chesapeake,’ that we can attract
these major brands.”
Lagoon, a subsidiary company of Groupe Beneteau, is
the largest manufacturer of
recreational sailing and power
catamarans in the world with
models ranging from 38 to 62
feet. All the catamarans are
built in France and transported
by ship to dealerships around
the world.

Yes it is. However, excitement
and events abound. We are so
very fortunate to have so many
creative and talented people and
there are many who want to be
involved, are involved and make
a major difference in our community.
The last Music Under the
Stars concert was a big hit. “Cat
Daddy” played “our songs” and
we did dance the night away.
George Throckmorton has
become a new member of the
UBA. We welcome him with
open arms. George is the “man
in charge” when it comes to
planning the new Music Under
the Stars. He has connections
with bands and is a musician
himself. The event went so well,
that people are asking for one
more event in September.
I don’t need to say much
about Founders’ Day this Saturday, August 30. This is a
well-planned event with entertainment and historical reenactments all day long. There
will be live pirates and a pirate
school for the young and old
alike. Of course the welcoming
of the John Mitchell Map is the
focus of the day.
Some merchants of Urbanna
are participating in a pirate
chest giveaway. Shop at designated UBA merchant stores and
with a purchase you may receive
a keyring. One of the lucky key
rings will open the chest of treasures! Keys are limited and the
winner will be announced at 4
p.m. at the Pirates Booth next to
the Woman’s Club building. You
must be present to win.
I received a thank-you from
Shannon Haley this morning. I
wanted to share this with you,
as I like to spread the good news
of Urbanna.
Ladies, you are the best!
Thank you all for making this
weekend so special for my girlfriends. They had such a terrific time in Urbanna and have
already been talking about the
next trip!
Trudi of Peaches & Cream,
thank you and your team for
organizing every detail of a
fabulous spa day, and the lunch
from the coffee shop was a perfect addition. Suzanne of Therapeutic Massage got rave reviews
from all five of my friends.
Awesome as always. Karen
around deltaville
by T.D. Harris
Things
are
happening
around Deltaville. We have had
Passport shopping and there
are sales in most of the shops.
Boats have begun stopping in
the marinas heading south.
The YMCA is offering free
enrollment and bonuses for
signing up your friends.
And for the parents looking
forward to school starting, that
day is almost here. This means
we have to pay more attention to how fast we are driving going through the school
zones. Keaton Garber said she
“drives like an old lady.” She
points out that I have a car built
for the Autobahn. There are
those in uniform who would
disagree with her about my
driving.
It is time to start weeding and
separating plants in the garden.
Sharing plants with friends is
one of the joys of being a gardener. Brent and Becky’s Bulbs
will be selling bulbs starting the middle of September.
Aaron Ward has ordered his
fall selection of plants. That
is something to look forward
to. The window box at Wilton
Garden has been spectacular all summer. Wonder what
it will look like for fall? The
new sign is lovely. Rather sets
the standard we would like to
aspire to for Deltaville.
Deltaville will never be a

wrong with being Deltaville

can be scrapped. There seems

the road. We all know this, yet
there is still trash on the sides
of the roads. For several years,
Gene Ruark promoted planting

that forward.
One has to wonder what is in
all of the storage units around
Deltaville. Can you imagine
what a gigantic yard sale it
would be if all of the units were
cleaned out? If it is in a storage
unit, it is not being used and
therefore not needed. And that
goes for my attic too.
Raynell Smith, Charlotte
Slaughter, Ella Clare Faulkner,
Cheryl Holleran, Benjamin
Stafford, Gail Butler, Lee

celebrated birthdays earlier
this week. Jack Hurd and his
wife Denise added their wedding anniversary to Jack’s

Pete Thacker celebrated their
anniversary yesterday. Today
is Amanda Linn’s birthday, and
tomorrow Andy Dean, Brandy
Meanley and Karen Minter will
celebrate birthdays. Juanita and
Dewey Glascock will celebrate
their anniversary tomorrow.
Farmer “Turk” Crittenden will
celebrate his birthday Saturday.
Best wishes to all.
If you have ever seen a horse
on its hind legs trying to reach
an apple on a tree, it will not
be hard for you to imagine
what “Poppy,” our new Corgi,
looked like trying to reach figs
on our fig tree. And she ate
them.

and Kenleighe of Lowe Tide,
thank you for the shopping and
wardrobe consulting. The girls
all commented on how knowledgeable you are about fashion.
Some of these outfits were spotted at The Works Bar & Grill
where Angela had everything
perfected—service, food and
the “special” room waiting for
us. Of course the trip would
not be complete without having
brunch at Something Different. Wow, a fun-filled, jammed
packed weekend in Urbanna!
If you have not looked
at the new Virginia Visitor
Center Maps, they are out and
about, informing you of all the
planned events for the upcoming months. The town map will
be out this week and it also will
have confirmed dates of events
through the next calendar year.
The other source of event information is Urbanna.com. There
is so much planned and much
excitement to follow in the
upcoming months. Please join
us and, of course, we are always
looking for happy volunteers.
Hope to see you out and
about celebrating Founders’
Day and enjoying the town and
history of Urbanna!

Arriving soon!
A Southside Sentinel for the digital age!
Beginning this fall, the Sentinel will be providing a new, exciting and
easier way to read your hometown newspaper electronically:
On your phone: (there’s an app for that)!
W
hile many of our readers still prefer the
printed version of the Southside Sentinel,
we know a growing audience for local news is
connected to the world electronically through
smartphones, tablets of all sizes, and laptop or
desktop computers. In September, accessing news
of Middlesex County and the surrounding area
will be easier on all of these devices.

Through a partnership with Technavia
Press, a replica electronic edition of the
Sentinel will be available each week in a
digital format suitable for each device —
phone, tablet or computer. Subscribers
log in through the Sentinel website, flip
through the newspaper pages, enlarge
them and read the entire paper graphically (as printed) if desired, or click or tap
on a story, photo, or advertisement, and
that item will appear in a new screen in
an easy-to-read format. After the story
or advertisement is read, it can easily be
printed or shared with family and friends
via email, Facebook or Twitter.
On your computer: (with a greatly enhanced pdf version)!
Among the new features:
• There will be Apple apps for iPad,
iPhone, iPod; Android apps for Google
Play and Amazon Kindle, phones and
tablets; and eReader versions (Kindle,
Sony Reader, Nook).
• Readers will be able to search the
entire paper, view a single page or a
two-page spread, or view thumbnails (a
display of all the pages in miniature).
• Users will also be able to view a table
of contents, and select content by page,
section or date (the latest 12 issues will
be active on the site; older digital archives may be accessed through a separate link).
• If a story continues from one page to
another, the continued portion will be
automatically linked to the beginning
portion.
• Email and web addresses embedded in
editorial and advertising content will be
automatically hyperlinked; click on the
email address to send email, or click on
the web address in an advertisement to
connect to the advertiser’s website.
