Watch the 1939 American historical epic Gone with the Wind on the big
screen! Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh star in the film that tells a story of
the American Civil War and reconstruction era from a Southern point of
view. The four-hour epic won 8 Oscars and was one of the first movies to
be shot in colour.

Spring Party – an International Exchange Event

2012 Latinoamerica Festival Nagoya Osu
第3回ラテンアメリカ フェスティバル 名古屋大須
Various bands from across Latin America from the Caribbean to the
Andes will be performing throughout the day in Osu. There are 12 groups
and artists featuring a range of styles ranging from tango and salsa to
traditional Andean music from Peru. There are also two “carnival style”
parades through the Osu Shopping Arcade (13:40 – 14:40 & 15:40 –
16:40).

Hamlet 英語演劇「ハムレット」
Nameless Media and Productions Theatre (NMP Theatre) is a community theatre group bringing together a diverse and
international team of Nagoya-based artists. Their second production of 2012 is an adaptation of William Shakespeare’s
Hamlet. This show will be presented with Japanese subtitles and directed by Carl Bradley.
About: The King of Denmark is dead. Mourning the loss of his father, Prince Hamlet retreats into a world of solitude
and despair. However, after discovering that his father was in fact violently murdered, Hamlet embarks on a cycle of
destructive revenge that threatens to bring down the very state of Denmark itself.
Encompassing political intrigue and sexual obsession, philosophical reflection and violent action, tragic depth and wild
humour, Hamlet is Shakespeare’s ‘poem unlimited’, a colossus in the story of the English language and the fullest
expression of Shakespeare’s genius.

This special exhibition, celebrating the first anniversary of the opening of the Nagoya City Science
Museum’s new wing, will introduce the evolution of sea creatures from 600 million years ago to
the present day, highlighting their journey of evolution and history of diversity.
All creatures living on Earth are descendants of creatures born in the oceans 300 million years ago
that evolved over a long period of time. It is estimated that over 95 percent of marine creatures
became extinct around 250 million years ago and 75 percent of all species became extinct around
65 million years ago destroying a huge diversity of creatures many with a unique shape and
appearance that many may describe as a “modern-day monster”. There are 300 exhibits on show
including a 12m long plesiosauria “Loch Ness Monster”, an 18m long ancestor of the whale, and
a coelacanth - a fish once thought extinct.

Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra News 名古屋フィルハーモニー交響楽団コンサート情報
Hiroshi Aoshima, known as “Mr. Blue Island” together with the Nagoya Philharmonic Orchestra will be conducting a
special family concert, and using humour will introduce newcomers to classical music and orchestra. The program
includes Edvard Grieg's Peer Gynt - the music to the play by Norwegian dramatist Henrik Ibsen.

The Spring Special Exhibition - The Okaya Collection: The Prosperous Merchant Family's Artistic Sensibility
春季特別展 - 豪商のたしなみ―岡谷コレクション―
This is a special exhibition commemorating the 25th Anniversary of the museum’s new wing and the 80th anniversary of the Tokugawa Gardens.
Eighty-eight treasured masterpieces of calligraphy, tea utensils and paintings of Edo Period, including Important Cultural Properties, were donated to
the Tokugawa Art Museum in 1965 in accordance with the will of Sosuke OKAYA (1887-1965). The Okaya were one of the wealthiest merchant
families in Nagoya. In 1669, the Okaya established a metalware shop in the castle town of Nagoya and today it operates as OKAYA & CO., LTD. With
offices in 16 countries around the world. Since the initial viewing after the donation, this occasion marks the first time that these works will be publicly
displayed all together.

An annual festival commemorating the 1575 Battle of Nagashino; one of
the most important battles in Japanese history. Features a samurai
parade (09:30 - 10:30), arquebus (flint-lock gun) displays throughout the
day, as well as taiko drum and Yosakoi dance displays.
You can also visit the Nagashino Castle Site Preservation Hall 長篠城
史跡保存館 (adults 210 Yen, children 100 Yen) for to see maps, illustrations, weapons, and armour. A bilingual booklet is available from
reception.

“NIC Nihongo no Kai” Japanese Course for
Adults NIC 日本語の会
The Center’s ever-popular program offers 7 types of classes
ranging from conversation for beginners to kanji.
Conversation classes: Kaiwa-kiso, Kaiwa-1, Kaiwa-2 (10:00,
12:00), Kaiwa-3 (14:00).
Writing Classes: Kana (14:00), Kanji-1 (10:00), Kanji-2 (12:00).
Applications will ONLY be accepted on Sunday, May 13 (11:30
- 12:00) at the information desk on Nagoya International
Center 5F. If oversubscribed, course applicants will be chosen by
lottery. Fee collection for successful applicants starts at 13:00. If
space available, applications for a 2nd class will be accepted from
13:30.
Term: Every Sunday from May 20 to July 29 (11 classes, 90
minutes each).
Participation Fee: 2500 Yen, plus additional fees (500 - 1000
Yen) for text and materials.

The NIC’s Children’s Japanese Class 子ども日本語教室
This course is taught by volunteers and is designed for children (born between
April 2, 1997 and April 1, 2006) whose native language is not Japanese. Students
learn Japanese skills necessary for school and daily life. The spring term has 10,
90-minute classes and runs every Sunday (10:00 - 11:30) from May 20 to July 22;
1000 Yen covers all 10 classes and there are only 30 places available.

Nagoya Castle Spring Festival 2012 名古屋城春まつり
The grounds of Nagoya Castle will be open daily for its annual spring
festival from March 28 to Sunday, May 6 (09:00 - 16:30). During cherry
blossom season from March 28 to April 11 the castle grounds will be lit up
during the evenings. During this period the castle grounds will be open until
20:00 (last entry to the castle 19:00) and the castle will be open until 19:30
(last entry 19:00). Street entertainers will be performing shows throughout
the festival period.
A selection of around 100 works of art from the Collection of the Royal
Museum of Fine Arts Antwerp and other museums including 50 works from
renowned Belgian artist James Ensor (1860–1949), and further related
works from past Dutch and Flemish artists and contemporary Belgian artists
including Brueghel and Rubens.
Admission: Adults 1000 Yen, students 800 Yen, children (0-JHS) free; 200
Yen discount per person for advance tickets or group purchases of 20 or

Yosakoi Yume Matsuri 2012 よさこい夢まつり
Around 100 teams, young and old, from all over Japan will converge on Nagoya
to perform in this two-day colourful and vibrant festival of traditional Kochi-style

Gardens where admission to the Gardens is 300 Yen for adults.

Art as Magic - Visual Deceptions and the Inner Spiritual World

Hokusai Exhibition 生誕250周年記念 北斎展
This special exhibition to commemorate the 250th anniversary of the
birth of Ukiyoe master Katsushika Hokusai (1760-1849) features a total
of 200 prints – many of which are on loan from the Katsushika Hokusai
Museum in Shimane Prefecture. Featured works include Hokusai’s
famous Thirty-six Views of Mount Fuji, which includes the
internationally recognized print, The Great Wave off Kanagawa.
Hokusai is one of the best well-known woodblock artists with both
Vincent van Gogh & Pablo Picasso being influenced by the artist’s work.

If you live out of town, can’t figure out how to order tickets online, and don’t want to be disappointed when you turn up at the concert without
a ticket - with minimum hassle and minimum Japanese skills you can purchase tickets for movies, concerts, exhibitions, and sporting events at
your local convenience store. Instead of paying the full price at the venue, purchasing ahead of time at your local convenience store can save
you hundreds of Yen on each ticket. Please be aware that terminals are periodically unavailable due to system maintenance, and once purchased
tickets cannot not be refunded or exchanged.

The 2012 Summer JLPT is scheduled to take place on Sunday, July 1. There are 5 levels available - N1, N2, N3, N4, and N5; N1 is the
most difficult. The application period for the summer test started on Monday, April 2 & ends on Wednesday, May 2.
You can buy tickets at Circle K and SunKus stores using the in-store “Karuwaza Station” terminal.
The terminal is only available between (07:00 & 23:30). Tickets are available from 10:00 on opening sales day.
Apply by post: Application booklets are available major bookstores in Japan such as Maruzen (丸善) in Sakae, and Sanseido (三省堂) on
the 11th Floor of the JR Central Towers. The application guide costs 500 Yen, and the actual test application costs 5,500 Yen.
Other Options
You can also buy movie tickets and save several hundred Yen on the
regular admission price.
