A Valuable Resource for Foreigners and Japanese Living In & Around Nagoya
Did you know that the Nagoya International Center has a Gyoseishoshi available on Tuesdays and Saturdays
to answer questions regarding immigration, labor laws, pension-related queries, family matters, and more?
A Gyoseishoshi can provide support to foreign nationals residing in Japan when applying for residence status,
work qualifications, business start-ups, or naturalization.
The NIC offers free over-the-counter guidance on these types of matters to help foreigners who may be
having difficulty with certain procedures or paperwork or simply need a few queries cleared up. Official
matters can pose a challenge even in one’s native tongue at times, so it can particularly be difficult at times in
a country such as Japan, where usual western conventions are replaced with their local equivalents. We are
here to help.
Immigration and Visa Related Matters
Since 1989 Gyoseishoshi have been authorized by the government to represent foreign nationals in
immigration-related documentation procedures.
They can assist you with certificate of eligibility applications, change of status of residence applications,
extension of period of stay applications, permanent residence applications, and certificate of authorized
employment applications.
They can also assist in other procedures:
 International marriage procedures
 Procedures to obtain operating permission for the construction industry, industrial waste operation,
antique dealing, and other industries

Nunoike English Speech Contest
布池英語スピーチコンテスト
An English Speech Contest for all ages from junior high school
students to adults, with two divisions:
①Recitation (recitation of a designated text) – Junior and senior
high school students
②Creative speech (presentation of an original speech of less than 5
minutes’ duration) – From junior high school students to adults

Nepal Earthquake Appeal
ネパール地震災害救援金のお願い
On April 25, an earthquake of magnitude 7.8 struck Nepal,
causing widespread destruction resulting in a large number of
fatalities and casualties, and leaving many people homeless.
Until Fri. 31 July, the Nagoya International Center will be
collecting donations for the relief of disaster victims, via
donation boxes at the 3rd Floor Information Counter and 4th
Floor Office Counter.
Donations received will be forwarded to the Japanese Red Cross
Society.
Your assistance is greatly appreciated.
Wanted! World Collaboration Festival
2015 Stage Acts and Booths
ワールド・コラボ・フェスタ2015参加団体募集説明会
This year's World Collaboration Festival is
scheduled to take place on Sat. 24 Oct.
and Sun. 25 Oct. at Oasis 21 in Sakae.
Information sessions (in Japanese) will be
held in June for groups and organizations that are interested in performing on
stage (choirs, bands, dance teams, drama
groups, variety acts, etc.) or running a
booth at the Festival. Acts should be
based in the Tokai Area and either have a
strong connection to a foreign culture, or
promote international exchange or
multicultural harmony.

FAE 30 - The Foreign Artists Exhibition –

It's that time of year again when the CJIS (Central Japan International Society) begins to prepare for another Foreign Artists
Exhibition (FAE).
This year's show will, amazingly, be the 30th in the ongoing series.
Taking place from November 3 to 8, in NIC's spacious 4th floor
display room, the annual exhibition welcomes foreign artists from
the Chubu Region of Central Japan to display their artworks to local
citizens. We are looking for painters, printers, illustrators, photographers, designers, potters (very much), sculptors, in fact anyone who
is creating fine art in a recognized medium (sorry, although
computer graphics is warmly welcomed as an art form, artists will
have to provide their own hardware).
Please note that last year's participants will automatically receive
application forms and info in due course.

Atsuta Matsuri 熱田まつり
Officially known as the Reisai (annual festival), the most significant festival of all
those held at Atsuta Jingu. The Chief Priest offers reverence and asks for the
blessing of the deities, and an envoy of His Majesty the Emperor presents an
offering of goheimotsu (a gift from His Majesty) and a prayer to the deities,
praying for the prosperity of the Imperial Family and the peace of the nation.
A number of events and attractions are held in and around Atsuta Jingu in
conjunction with the festival, drawing around 200,000 people each year.
Among the sights are kentō-makiwara (votive lanterns attached to straw in a
tree-like arrangement, 17:30 – 20:30) at each entrance of the shrine grounds,
and fireworks (which can be viewed from around the nearby Atsuta Jingu Park
[熱田神宮公園] – park off limits during fireworks - and Shirotori Park [白鳥公園],
19:40 – 20:30) For Atsuta locals, the festival is the beginning of the yukata(summer kimono) wearing season each year, as they browse the stalls, fan in
hand, enjoying the season.

main telescope and various other telescopes to observe the night’s

Rose Festa in Hisayaodori Gardens Flarie
久屋大通庭園フラリエ
「ローズフェスタ」
Hisayaodori Gardens Flarie (formerly Ran no Yakata) reopened after
renovations in September last year. Visitors can enjoy nature in an urban
setting in a relaxed manner in 6 gardens with themes including flowers,
green, and waterside, and take time out for a stroll, a meal, or shopping
while feeling the nature around them, and entry to the Gardens is now free.
To coincide with the prime time for enjoying roses, the Rose Festa in
Hisayaodori Gardens Flarie will be held from late May to mid-June. Entry to
the event will also be free. Be soothed by around 50 varieties of roses
(predominately French Roses) and 200 individual plants. Rose seedlings will
also be available to purchase. The cafés and restaurants will also have a
special seasonal menu.

The Nagoya Touring Children’s Theater

The Nagoya Touring Children's Theater began in 1980 to give children the
opportunity to experience the excitement of live theater, something that can't

Nagoya City Museum: Cultural Assets,
Restored 常設展示室フリールーム「よみがえれ文化財」展

Since 2013, the Nagoya
City Museum has been
Screen Depicting a Pilgrimage to Ise Grand Shrine (Early Edo period)
collecting donations for
the restoration of artefacts. In this special exhibit in the Free Room, artefacts such
as the ‘Screen Depicting a Pilgrimage to Ise Grand Shrine’ (伊勢参宮図屏風) and a
sword from the Kofun period, restored through many people’s support, will be on
display. You can also learn about how each artefact was restored, the techniques
used and new discoveries made during the restoration work.
There are, on the other hand, items in the Museum collection that are in poor
condition due to deterioration, which are not only unable to be exhibited and
utilized, but could disintegrate in the future. There are various kinds of such artefacts,
and careful consideration is required from various perspectives, such as the materials
and condition of the item, as well as how and to what extent restoration should be
carried out. By looking at pieces that will require repair and restoration, the exhibit
will look at the work of museums to preserve artefacts for future generations.

June at Tokugawaen
Once a residence of the Owari Tokugawa clan and located next to the
Tokugawa Art Museum in Nagoya’s Higashi Ward, Tokugawaen is a
pond-centered Japanese garden with something to enjoy in every
season, even the rainy season. From late May through to early June,
hanashōbu, or Japanese irises, are but one of the attractions.
Tokugawaen Float Gathering 徳川園山車揃え
Five dashi, or floats, which are pulled through the streets by parishioners in the Tsutsui-chō and Deki-machi Tennō Matsuri (festival) in
Higashi Ward, will assemble in Tokugawaen and perform together. A
specially-made fan will be distributed to the first 1,000 visitors at the
Kuromon (黒門) main gate from 10:00; and an original strap depicting
the five floats will be given to the first 500 visitors to purchase a ticket
and enter the Tokugawaen Japanese garden (opens 9:30). Other
commemorative items will also be available for purchase.

Listening to the Rain – Japanese Umbrellas at the Tokugawaen

During the Tsuyu, or rainy season, visitors to the Japanese garden can
rent a wagasa, or Japanese umbrella to enjoy a stroll through the rain.
Visitors entering between 9:30 and 17:00 can rent umbrellas for 100
Yen each at the Kuromon main gate.

NAGOYA SYDNEY RUNNING FESTIVAL
名古屋・シドニーランニングフェスティバル！
It’s now 35 years since Nagoya City and the City of Sydney became
sister cities in 1980. In 2012, the Nagoya Marathon and Sydney
Marathon (Sydney Running Festival) began a partnership, and continue
to send runners to compete in one another’s events.
This will be a special running event in Nagoya to commemorate the 35th
anniversary of the sister cities relationship, held on the same day as the
Sydney Marathon. Run in solidarity with the runners in Sydney!

Shirotori Garden is a 3.7-hectare Japanese-style garden in Atsuta
Ward. As the ajisai (Japanese hydrangea) are in full bloom in the
Garden, why not partake in a bowl of matcha tea? In the Seiu-tei
(清羽亭) building, non-Japanese ladies will offer tea to guests and
give a brief talk about the ceremony. There will also be an example
tea ceremony lesson conducted in English. (Tea ceremony times:
10:00, 10:45, 11:30, 12:15, 13:45, 14:30, 15:15. Cost: 500 Yen,
includes tea and sweets. Limited to 25 participants per session.
Reservations are required, and can be made from 9:30 at the
Seiu-tei building entrance.)
You can also hear non-Japanese presenters talk about their
experiences with kimono, calligraphy, ikebana, and other Japanese
crafts, and their favorite aspects of Japanese culture from 13:00;

The 24th Inazawa Hydrangea Festival

Every year in June for the first half of the
month, at Ōtsukashōkaiji Rekishi Kōen
park, you can see over ninety varieties of
hydrangea - around ten thousand shrubs
in total, bringing a great deal of joy to the

The 17th Hydrangea Festival
第17回あじさい祭り
Famed for its 12 figures of Heavenly Generals carved by the
Buddhist monk Enkū, Ongakuji Temple in Kōnan City is also known
for its hydrangeas which bloom during June. Within the temple
grounds are some 33 varieties, and around 1,200 individual plants.
Diligently tended by local residents, the sight of the glistening
flowers during the rainy season is a soothing breath of fresh air for
visitors. In the garden on the east side of the main building are five
Sal trees (Shorea robusta), the flowers of which are said to have
the characteristic of blooming in the morning, and falling and
scattering in the early evening, and are at their most impressive
when the hydrangeas are in flower.

The Showa Museum of Art: The Foreign in
the Tea Ceremony

「茶の湯の中の異国」
Introduced from China, tea culture established itself as a part of Japanese
culture. However, among the utensils, the hanging scrolls and gestures used,
many items brought from overseas can be seen. From exotically-molded
vessels passed down as tea ceremony utensils, to calligraphy painted by
monks in foreign countries being used as kakejiku hanging scrolls in the tea
ceremony, this exhibition takes a look at foreign designs and colors
incorporated into the Japanese culture of the tea ceremony through the tea
paraphernalia transmitted from generation to generation.

The Journey of Tokaido HOEIDO and KYOKA Poems
中山道広重美術館 「描かれた東海道 歌われた五十三次の旅」
Enjoy two different versions of the Tokaido created by Hiroshige. One is “The Fifty-three
Stations of the Tokaido” published by a publisher called Hoeido in 1831-1834. The other is
“The Fifty-three Stations of the Tokaido with Kyoka” (comic short poems of thirty-one
syllables) from the late 1830s.

Japan opened to the outside world with the arrival of Perry in 1853. Railroads were constructed, western-style buildings were built, and Japan
transformed into a modern state under numerous impacts from Western civilization. Likewise, the energy born of the impact from encounters with
Western art would change Japanese painting immensely.
Meanwhile, Westerners arriving in Japan at the end of the Tokugawa Shogunate and during the Meiji period, surprised at the art in the lifestyle and
extraordinary ideas of the Japanese, would be intrigued by this wonderland of Japan.
This exhibition explores the mutual impact, both of the West on Japan and of Japan on the West, occurring in an age of upheaval, through works
from the Museum of Fine Arts, Boston, and the Tokyo University of the Arts, whose collections are significant to the dialogue on modern Japanese
art. Featuring around 150 pieces including paintings, Nishiki-e colored woodblock prints, crafts and photographs, the exhibition focuses on the
beauty of Meiji period Japan.

Artists of the Inten – The Development and Creation of Modern Japanese
Painting 所蔵日本画展 院展の画家たち −近代日本画の開拓と創造−
The Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute) is an artistic organization founded in 1898 with Okakura Tenshin (Okakura
Kakuzō) as a central figure. Temporarily disbanding before its revival in 1914, the Nihon Bijutsuin works toward the
modernization of Nihon-ga (Japanese painting), and holds study groups and a twice-yearly exhibition (the Inten), which
has become the stage for the unveiling of many masterpieces of Nihon-ga.
Follow the progress of the Inten at this exhibition, from artists such as Yokoyama Taikan, Hishida Shunsō, Shimomura
Kanzan, and Kimura Buzan, who were directly instructed by Tenshin and sought the creation of new Nihon-ga; Imamura
Shikō, Yasuda Yukihiko, Maeda Seison, whose efforts contributed to the revived Inten; and such representative Inten
contributors as Okumura Togyū and Ogura Yuki, to contemporary artists who are the leading figures in the Inten today.
See works from the museum collection of Inten artists who lead the world of Nihon-ga, exploring tradition and innovation from the Meiji period through to the present.

The Japanese painter Kataoka Tamako
(1905-2008) is known for her style of painting
using vivid color, bold deformation, and strong
brushwork. These characteristics were Tamako’s
own, unmatched by any other painter in the
postwar Nihon Bijutsuin (Japan Art Institute).
In addition to being an exploration of Tamako’s
work through her representative pieces, the
exhibition also features her sketchbooks and
various resources. By showing how the artist
faced the world before her eyes, and how she

After July 9, 2012, and the introduction of the Residence Card, the Certificate of Alien Registration (外国人登録証明書/ Gaikokujin Tōroku
Shōmeisho) issued under the previous alien registration system has been deemed to be equivalent to the new Residence Card. However, mid- to
long-term resident foreign nationals who currently hold a Certificate of Alien Registration, i.e. those who have yet to be issued a Residence
Card, should be aware that the period in which the Certificate of Alien Registration is regarded as equivalent to the Residence Card
will end on July 8, 2015. (This may be earlier than the expiry date printed on your Certificate of Alien Registration.)
If you are a mid- to long-term resident foreign national in Japan, and have yet to be issued a Residence Card, you can request to exchange your
Certificate of Alien Registration for a Residence Card at the Nagoya Regional Immigration Office.

Are you separating your garbage and recyclables correctly? Let’s have a quick refresher on how to
separate household waste.
Recyclable plastic and paper containers and packaging, as well as plastic bottles, are marked with
Plastic
Paper
symbols (see below) which specify the material type. By checking these symbols, you will be able to
correctly separate your recyclables.
Garbage and recyclables should be placed into the designated garbage bags and put out for collection by 8:00 on the designated day (7:00 for Naka Ward).
Burnable garbage, non-burnable garbage and plastic containers and packaging should be put out in front of your residence (or
designated location) in the designated garbage bags.
Paper containers and packaging, plastic bottles, cans, and glass bottles should be separated into their designated garbage bags
and deposited at your local recycling stations.

Do you know about the Me~guru sightseeing bus? Whether
you’re a tourist or a longer-term resident looking to check out
some of Nagoya’s sights in a convenient way (and minimizing the
risk of getting lost while navigating between attractions), the
Me~guru is a great, economical way to do it.
When: The Me~guru operates Tuesday to Sunday. (No service on
Mondays, or the following day if Monday is a national holiday.)
On weekends and national holidays, buses depart every 20-30
minutes; on weekdays, buses depart every 30-60 minutes.
Where: Me~guru buses depart from Nagoya Station, Bus Stop
8 and stop at the Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry
and Technology, Noritake Garden, Nagoya Castle, Tokugawaen
(The Tokugawa Art Museum, Hosa Library), Cultural Path Futaba
Museum, Nagoya City Archives South, Nagoya TV Tower,
Hirokoji-Sakae, and Hirokoji-Fushimi, before heading back to
Nagoya Castle, Noritake Garden, Toyota Commemorative
Museum of Industry and Technology, then return to the terminus
at Nagoya Station.

Toyota Commemorative Museum of Industry and
Technology
An interactive museum established
by the Toyota Group. The museum is
housed in a red-brick factory from
the Taisho Period (1912-1926) that
remains at the birthplace of the
Toyota Group. The museum features
many textile machines and Toyota’s
very first passenger car. In Technoland, you can have fun trying out unique play equipment while
learning how textile machines and cars work.
