In his final remarks, Mr Christian Masset, French Ambassador in
Japan highlighted the major results of this symposium: “the
first result is that manufacturing has a future and this future
lies in innovation. Innovation should never be disconnected
from social needs and it requires a better integration between
manufacturing and services. The second result is that the
future of manufacturing also depends on competitiveness of
industries. The third result is that the first two conclusions
concern the corporate sector. Moving now to the role of the
government,
they
should
be
involved
in
promoting
competitiveness and also play a role in terms of coordination.”

On 9th April 2013, the international symposium “Which future
! ! manufacturing industries in Japan, Korea, Germany and

organized by FFJ & GRIPS was held at GRIPS, Tokyo.

a day, researchers, policymakers and business

people have discussed about the future of the industry.

Deindustrialization has become a major concern for most of
! OECD countries. The purpose of this symposium was to

academic people, business people and policy makers in

order to discuss the future of manufacturing in the case of four

leading economies that are not often compared, namely Japan,
Korea, Germany, and France. The three main themes were

On April 8th and 9th, the FFJ has co-organized with GRIPS a workshop

gathering 20 researchers
from Japan, Korea, Germany and France on
! side of deindustrialization and labor dynamics". The

consequences of deindustrialization on the labor markets from the
viewpoint of more

European Japan Advanced Research Network (EJARN) to
organize its annual meeting in Paris on June 24th and 25th
2013. EJARN is a Europe-wide network of high-level
scholars of Japan created in 2008 by Prof. Marie
Söderberg, Director of European Institute of Japanese
Studies
based
in
Stockholm.
Its
establishment
underscores the goal to strengthen the EU-Japan
relationship and to provide the means for Europe and
Japan to learn more about and from each other. For more

EJARN 2013 meeting will be divided into two parts. On
June 24th, a symposium will be specifically dedicated to
the current state of EU-Japan relations, with a specific
focus on the negotiation of the EU-Japan free trade
agreement. Speakers from the academic, business, and
government sides will gather in order to discuss about the
impediments to the conclusion of an agreement as well as
the potential benefits and costs of this agreement. Besides
this agreement, other topics will be discussed, such as
political relations and foreign policy. Among the already

Pourquoi avez-vous choisi de faire ce stage au
Japon ?
) J’ai eu la chance, il y a sept ans, de partir une première
fois au Japon sur les traces de mon père qui s’y était
établi à la fin des années 1970. Cette première
expérience, de courte durée, a indéniablement créé
chez moi le besoin d’y retourner pour passer plus de
temps dans cette société si différente de la nôtre.

L’objectif du stage était d’étudier la désindustrialisation
