Go Imadegawa Street, a 7-kilometer (4½-mile) thoroughfare running east-to-west through Kyoto, is surrounded by temples, specialty stores, museums, and nature. Its many and various attractions all participate in communicating the spirit and traditions of the city. The street is said to have been named after an Imadegawa River—a tributary of the Kamogawa river—that at one time apparently ran through the city center. As you stroll along the street, take time to enjoy the seasonal beauty of blossoming plum trees (Kitano Tenmangu Shrine) and cherry trees (Kyoto Gyoen). Stop and try some traditional specialty foods, and visit some of the many fascinating shops, temples, and museums. The area is well served by municipal buses and subways. J K Ginkakuji Temple Yoshida Jinja Shrine ( Silver Pavilion: Jishoji) 吉田神社 A well-known shrine built during the Heian Period to guard the city. During the three-day Setsubun Festival the grounds are filled with street stores(February 2 to 3), and crowded with supplicants coming to pray for protection and good fortune. The Tsuina ceremony— a ceremony to drive out evil spirits, dating back to the early Heian period—begins at 6 PM on the first day of the festival. Prayers made at the Daigengu subsidiary shrine, set deep within the grounds, are said to be especially effective—offering the same effect as combined visits to all 3,132 shrines in the country. Special yakuzuka structures, designed to catch and remove ill fortune, are set up exclusively for this ceremony. 銀閣寺(慈照寺) A famous Zen temple, established through the efforts of Ashikaga Yoshimasa, the eighth shogun of the Muromachi shogunate. The beautiful main structure, properly named Kannon Hall but more widely known as the Silver Pavilion, is a National Treasure that stands out for its elegant simplicity. There is no evidence that silver foil was ever applied; instead, the walls were finished with black lacquer. The garden, a National Site of Scenic Beauty, was landscaped under the direction of Yoshimasa himself. When snow falls, the black/white contrasts are remarkable. The Ginshadan (sand pattern) and Kogetsudai (sand mound) are also interesting and attractive. L M N N 11 Kyoto Winter Tour Special pecial Opening Special Opening of Cultural Properties —See the Hidden Beauty of Japan’s Ancient Capital— The Kyoto Winter Tour campaign offers a chance to experience aspects of the ancient capital’s charm unique to the season in which an air of solemn tranquility settles over the city. Zen has been selected as the theme for 2016, the commemorative 50th campaign, which features special viewings of cultural treasures not usually open to the public. Enter the World of Zen and Explore its Impact on Japanese Culture and Art The Symbol of Kyoto: Japan’s Tallest Five-Storied Pagoda This year marks the 1,150th anniversary of the death of the Zen master Rinzai, who founded the Rinzai sect of Zen Buddhism, so a variety of cultural properties not usually open to the public will be available to view at Zen temples. These will include gardens, images of the Buddha, and sliding-screen paintings. Do take advantage of this rare opportunity to view the cultural treasures that will be unveiled at 16 temples around the city. Standing around 55-meter high, the five-storied pagoda rebuilt by Tokugawa Iemitsu—the third shogun of the Tokugawa shogunate—is Japan’s tallest wooden pagoda. The interior of the first story, which will be open for special viewing, is decorated with richly colored patterns. The main pillar called “Shinbashira” standing in the center is said to represent Dainichi Nyorai, existence in the center of the universe. Four Nyorai statues are each located surrounding the main pillar. Visitors will also be able to see the temple’s halls, including the Kondo (Main Hall) and the Kodo (Lecture Hall), where 21 images of the Buddha form a three-dimensional mandala.
