Conference Theme:
Birth and Death in Japan— Meanings and Representation in Historical and
Cross-Cultural Perspectives

Even though the birth rate has been declining in modern Japan, no less than one
million Japanese babies enter the world each year. As to deaths, although Japan is
noted for longevity for both men and women, the number of deaths has been
gradually increasing every year of the last few decades, outnumbering the number of
births in recent years.
This conference is not aimed at any particular conclusions about the topics of
births and deaths, but rather it aims to gain a panoramic view of how birth, the
beginning of life, and death, the end of life, have been understood, expressed and
treated in Japan in historical and cross-cultural perspectives.
Many topics concerning births and infants will be broached, such as infertility
treatment, prenatal diagnosis, depression before and after childbirth, naming babies,
memorial services for miscarried fetuses, the social environment surrounding child
rearing, a decreasing birth rate, births and child rearing among alien residents, and
so on.
Regarding deaths, we anticipate presentations on mortality education, a high
suicide rate, dying solitary death, the issue of Karoushi or “death from overwork,”
casualties in natural disasters, various views of afterlife, the search for “humane”
death, hospice care, deaths of pets, “deaths” of inanimate objects such as dolls,
funeral ceremonies, treatment of corpses, and so on.
Beyond this general theme of the conference, papers and panels on other themes
concerning Japanese society and culture are also highly welcome.
Those who are interested in participating in the conference, please send a 350-word
abstract in English or a 1000-letter abstract in Japanese with the title of the
presentation to [email protected]. Even though the abstract is in English,
the presentation may be either in English or Japanese.
As to eligibility for participation, those who come to the meeting are automatically
members of AJJ with no annual fees for membership. Please see the Constitution of

AJJ encourages English-Japanese bilingualism. Applicants are first asked to
submit an abstract in English OR Japanese, then accepted applicants are to
submit the abstract in the OTHER LANGUAGE as well.
Presenters are encouraged to mix English and Japanese in slides or handouts as
much as possible.

「日本社会における「生誕と死」―その意味と表象、歴史的・比較文化的視点から」
趣旨
現代日本の出生率は年々減少傾向にあるが、百万人以上もの新生児が年々この世に生を受けて
いる。
「死」に関しては、日本は男女とも世界でも屈指の長寿国として知られているが、死亡数
はここ数十年、年々微増傾向にあり、近年、その絶対数は出生数を上回り、人口減少が進行して
いる。
本大会は、日本の「生誕と死」の現象について特定の学術的結論を見出そうとするものではな
いが、人生の始まりである「生誕」と、人生の締めくくりである「死」が、日本でどのように解
釈され、表現され、扱われてきたのかを、歴史的および比較文化的な視点から、広く展望してみ
ることを目的としたい。
出産や幼児に関して、多くの具体的なトピックが想定できる。例えば、不妊治療、出生前診断、
出産前後の鬱、子どもの名づけ、水子供養、育児手法、出生率の低下現象、外国人在住者の出産
と育児、等々である。
死に関しても、死の準備にまつわる教育、自死・自殺の問題、孤独死、過労死の問題、自然災
害による死傷、来世観の諸相、
「人間的」な死の追求、ホスピス運動、ペットの死との向き合い
方、人形など非生物の「死」の扱い、葬儀形態の多様化、死体の扱い方、など、多様な側面が考
えられる。
本大会の上記のような全体テーマにこだわらず、日本社会・文化に関する全く別種のトピック
の発表やパネル参加も歓迎しています。
本大会への参加にご興味のある方は、日本語なら１０００字以内、あるいは、英文なら 350 語
（単語数）以内の要旨と、発表タイトル（複数名によるパネル参加の場合は、パネル全体のタイ
トル、および、各発表のタイトル）を、[email protected] までメールでお送りください。
なお、要旨文は英語で書いていただいても、口頭発表では、英語・日本語のどちらの言語でも自由に選
択してください。
ＡＪＪは、推薦も年会費も不要な学会です。振ってご参加ください。
