ESS とは？
A. ESS は、学校による英語教育プログラムをサポートすべく、GKA SCHOLASTIC Book Club の事務局、児童の前向き
な読書を後押しする取組みへの支援、ボランティアの募集・調整、また関連情報交換会等の企画・開催などを担当します。

ESS のメンバーは？
A. SHIP は、ぐんま国際アカデミーの保護者と教職員が良きパートナーとなって同じ船（SHIP）に乗り込み、相互の情報
の共有を通じて、児童の学校生活が円滑かつ安全に送れるよう支援することを目的としています。この思想通り、ESS のメ
ンバーも保護者と教職員から成ります。

SCHOLASTIC Book Club とは？

SCHOLASTIC（スカラスティック）は世界最大手の教育系出版社であり、児童向け e ラーニングやメディア開発の世
界的リーダーです。Scholastic Book Club は、便利でお手頃なお値段で英語の書籍をお求めになれる共同購入システムです。

適切な難易度の本を Scholastic Book Club から選ぶ方法は？
A.
担当教員が、適切な難易度の Scholastic Book Club カタログを選択していることに加え、本を購入する前に、同カタロ
グに記載されている、各書籍のページ数をご確認ください。児童が英語書籍の読書をよりスムースに慣れ親しむ様、当初は
比較的ページ数の少ない本から、その後読み応えのあるものを選択することをお勧めします。

どの様に、児童による前向きな英語書籍の読書を後押ししますか？
A. Scholastic Reading Counts!という追加プログラムの導入を検討中です。小学生から高校生を対象とし、自身で読んだ
本に関して、ソフトウェア上でクイズを行えるものです。スカラスティックだけでなく他の出版社からも発行された 48,000
もの対象書籍タイトルがあり、児童は、Scholastic Book Club から、図書館から、あるいはクラスから借りたものから該当
する本を選び、読むことが出来ます。そして、PC 上のクイズに答え、獲得した累積ポイントに応じて、文房具等の景品を
受け取れ、児童の前向きな読書を促すきっかけとなりうるものです。

Reading Counts に要する費用は？
A.
お手頃な費用です。現在のところ、ソフトウェア・ライセンスとして１度限りの費用 $7.50（約 700 円）と、システム
利用料として毎年 $2（約 200 円）を児童各一名ずつに要します。また、より利用し易くするべく、クイズ等を Web ブラウ
ザー上で利用出来る様にするシステム更新が計画されています。

ESS のボランティア活動とは？
A.
主な例としまして、保護者が Scholastic Book Club から英語書籍を購入する際の支援を行います。注文した書籍が学校
に届いた際には、各児童へ手渡せる様に本の仕分けを行います。

Q. What is ESS?
A. ESS is a group to support GKA's English education program, assists GKA SCHOLASTIC Book Club as
well as an effort of encouraging students to have independent reading. We call for and coordinate
volunteers for related activities. We also hold an information-sharing meeting to discuss relevant matters.
Q. Who are the members of ESS?
A. GKA SHIP stands for School and Home in Partnership which consist of both teachers and parents. As
this idea is applied to ESS as well, our members are teachers and parents.
Q. What is SCHOLASTIC Book Club?
A.
Scholastic is the world’s largest publisher and distributor of children’s books and a leader in
educational technology and children’s media. Scholastic Book Club is convenient and one of the most
affordable ways to find and order children’s English books.
Q. How can I find right level of books from the Scholastic Book Club?
A. Our GKA teachers select the right level of the Book Club catalog to pass out. Please check the number
of pages of the books in the catalog before you purchase them. This is one way to help students get a book
that will slowly help them get used to reading English books at their level and a little higher.
Q. How do we encourage students to read English book independently?
A. We are planning to bring in Scholastic Reading Counts! It is an independent reading program for
students from elementary to high school which combines reading practice and software-based reading
assessment. Students can choose from 48,000 titles of books, not only from Scholastic but also other
publishers which can be found from the Book Club, GKA library or class room to read. Read then the
answer quizzes on your PC to obtain points to get a nice little prize eventually!
Q. Any cost for the Reading Counts?
A. It is very reasonable. There is currently a 1 time software license cost of $7.50 (about 700yen) and an
annual cost of $2 (about 200yen) for each student. A more convenient web based version is coming soon.
Q. What are volunteer activities?
A. Some are, assisting parents to place orders for the Book Club. Also when the ordered Scholastic books
arrive at GKA, they sort and bundle the books for distribution to the students.
