ナッシュビル日本総領事館から最後の挨拶

Dear Sir or Madam:
Twenty six months have passed since I first arrived in Nashville in 2009. While, my stay here has
been filled with both challenges and opportunities, I must say farewell. I have had the great privilege

of traveling to New Orleans, my home town for five times working on various projects with very
capable and dedicated people.
And before leaving, I want to express my sincere appreciation for the generous assistance you have
extended to me and the Consulate. I will never forget the countless expressions of solidarity and
support that we have received since the earthquake and tsunami last March.
You may know that I traveled here without my wife and children. While I have missed having them
here with me, your friendship and support have repeatedly reminded me that we are all in this together.
I will start my next chapter in Malawi in Africa. And I can honestly say that I am very lucky to be
leaving here with so many fond memories, memories which will give me the strength and energy I need
to embrace this challenging new assignment. I hope that I can be as good a friend to the Malawi people
as you have been to me.
Last but not least, I would also ask that you welcome my successor, Mr. Iryu, as warmly as you did me.

日本祭
手芸品　展示、販売
今年も例年のように、手芸のグループ
の皆さんが沢山の作品を創ってくださいまし
た。
昨年と同様、毎月一度集まり皆で案を
出し合い材料を集めて日本らしい物をつくり
ました。
何時ものように”しおりにあなたの名
前を日本語で書きます”は人気をはくしまし
た。目の前で筆で名前を書くと、大人も子供
も大喜びでした。また折り紙で出来たくすだ
まも例年のように人気がありました。
今年の新しいものは昨年亡くなった古
くからの会員の静江さんの遺品の着物や帯で
幸子さんが創ったバックやテーブル敷きが人
気をよびました。日本の素材を使ったものは
やはり喜ばれます。
ケイさんも手作りの紙人形を沢山だし
てくださいました。スライデルの菅井さんも
何時ものように墨絵を披露してくださいまし
た。
観客はとても感心していました。ご協
力くださった皆さんに心から感謝いたします。
ことしはクラフトの売り上げ 1500 ドルあまり
が日本会の収入になりました。
また来年に向かって準備に掛かります。

興奮の３日間
今年８月盆踊りの後風邪を引き２ヶ月
ばかり体調を崩し、暫く長男の家でやっかい
になった。日本人会の方々からはお見舞いの
お言葉を頂き感謝している。こんな中、毎年
参加しているポイドラス　ホームでの芸術祭
がやって来た。この会には毎年土地のアーチ
スト１００名以上が参加する。私は今年三枚
の油絵を出品することにした。選考が行われ
た１１月４日金曜日、私の作品が賞を頂いた
と連絡を受けた。友だちからも祝福を受け私
は夢心地であった。
一方、日本人クラブのご推薦で
APAS(Asian Pacific American Association)
から原フランク賞を頂くことになった。私に
は全く予期しないことであった。ちょうど絵
の展覧会開催中の１１月５日土曜日にその授
与式が行われることになり、未だ体調が完全
ではなかったが、私は何とか着物を着て会場
のシェラトンへ出かけた。会場は数百人の色
鮮やかに盛装した中国、韓国、フリッピン、
インドネシアなど多くのアジア人でにぎやか
に華やいでいた。やがて日本人会会長マイク
ダン氏初めボッブ　ターナー氏など日本人会
の懐かしい面々が現れた。私たちは同じテー
ブルに座り様々な催しを楽しみ食事を頂いた。
食後の余興で突然私の名前が呼ばれた。私は
気が着かなかったのだがくじが当たったと言
う。同じテーブルの皆に促されて半信半疑で
ステージの前へ進んだ。確かにそれは私への
賞品で子供なども喜ぶゲームだった。機械に
疎い私にとって、それは正に猫に小判であっ
た。私は皆の拍手をあびて賞品をいただいた。
それから踊りなど幾つかの余興の後、いよい
よ本番がきた。各国代表の名前が呼ばれ私の
順番がやって来た。私は壇上に昇り自分の名
前が掘り込まれたプラックを手にフラッシュ
を浴びた。それは私の一生で記念すべき貴重
な瞬間であった。
絵の展覧会は１１月６日、日曜日に終
わった。私は出品した絵を引き取りに会場へ
行った。ところが絵が見当らない。なんと全
部売れたと言うのだ。今まで展覧会で出品し
た絵が全部売れたことは一度もない。私は耳
を疑った。この数日間、次々に起こった思い
がけない出来事に私は唯驚くばかりである。

Three Exciting Days
After BON-ODORI in August, I got sick for
a couple of months. During these days, I have
received kind wards and worm concerns from the
members of Japan Club. That I really appreciate.
In October, there was an annual local art show
called, Poydras Home Exhibit. Poydras Home is an

We sit at the same table and enjoyed dinner
together. After dinner there were interesting
entertainment of music and dance. While I was
enjoying the evening, everyone at the table told me
that my name was called. I could not hear nor
believe it. As everyone urged me, I went to the
stage. It was right. I received the raffle prize in
storm of claps. After a while the important moment
came. Award recipients were called one by one and
my turn came. I stood on the stage with the plaque
with my name engraved. In the rain of flash I
thanked everyone who have supported me until that
day.
On Sunday, November 6, the art show was
