Swiss Universities at APAIE 2008
Summary
The Swiss excellence in higher education was presented as the Swiss
Universities booth at APAIE 2008, the third annual conference & exhibition
for professionals in education. The three day event, which was held from
March 26 to 28, showcased the latest programs and developments from
various universities and organizations. It offered visitors as well as
exhibitors, ranging from educators to senior administrators in institutes of
higher learning, a good opportunity to exchange ideas and pursue potential
exchange alliances.
The theme of the APIAE Conference & Exhibition 2008 (http://www.apaie.org),
organized by the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) and
hosted by Waseda University in Tokyo, was “The Next Wave in Asia-Pacific
Higher Education”. With the goal of exploring the emerging trends in international
education and exchange, the conference side of the event consisted of three
keynote speeches, a roundtable of University Presidents and 50 sessions by
over 160 speakers in the field of higher education.
The overall event featured 764 participants from over 420 institutions of 55 countries /
regions around the world. Of the Swiss institutions of higher learning jointly represented at the
Swiss Universities’ booth, nine delegates from ETH Zurich and the Universities of Bern, Basel,
Geneva, Lausanne, St. Gallen and Zurich attended to successfully elaborate on existing and
possible collaborations with institutions not only in Japan, but from elsewhere in the globe.
Particularly aggressive in approaching our exhibitors were their Korean and Taiwanese
counterparts seeking a potential partnership.
As for the Swiss participants, their wealth of experience with
international conferences was well reflected in their tight
schedule and many accomplishments. For example, the
University of Geneva signed a collaboration agreement with Keio
University at the site of the conference. They also deepened
talks with the University of Tokyo during their stay in Japan. The
University of Basel held talks towards a partnership agreement
with Dokkyo University at their campus just outside Tokyo.
Swiss Universities’ Booth
The Swiss Universities’ exhibition was organized by the Science & Technology Office of the Swiss Embassy in
Tokyo, which is in charge of promoting higher education at ETHs, Swiss Universities and Universities of Applied
Sciences in Japan. Material provided by each university was displayed at the booth and presented to visitors
according to their specific needs and interests.
In addition, two documents giving a
comprehensive and comparative overview of
Swiss Universities and Universities of Applied
Sciences in Japanese facilitated the
communication with representatives from
local institutions. The “Education, Research
and Innovation in Switzerland” DVDs were
also handed out so various institutions could
introduce the dimensions of the Swiss
educational landscape to their students.

As a result of close coordination with the exhibition organizers
prior to the event, the Swiss booth was in one of the best
locations, right in front of a seminar room where there was a
good flow of people. While some exhibitors at other sites
experienced great difficulty in making
new contacts, the Swiss flags, the
Einstein logo T-shirt and the popular
Einstein logo promotion bags also
helped attract people to the Swiss
booth. The S&T Office alone
collected almost 50 new contacts.
The problem at other locations
was that because the exhibition
was spread out on several
floors of two buildings, the
venue where no seminars were
held had very few visitors. One
such
exhibitor
was
so
disappointed after traveling across the Pacific with a good
number of staffs and tons of materials, he was seriously considering not participating in future APAIE events.

On one of the evenings during the event, Swiss Ambassador Paul Fivat invited the
representatives from Switzerland, as well as Alumni from the multiple Swiss
universities to a reception party at his residence. A total of 85 people attended, and
many, when leaving or in their ‘thank you’ email expressed their gratitude for the
opportunity to reunite and extend their “Swiss” network.

Testimonials
All participants seem to have been quite satisfied with their presence at the Swiss Universities’ booth, as expressed
in their emails after the event. Please find some testimonials in the following:
University of Bern
Booth: The Swiss booth was very attractive, (set-up of pictures; raffle, coffee machine and friendly staff) though
visitors will not have the recognition effect when attending another conference in the US, Asia or Europe as there is
no corporate design of a Swiss Higher Education booth. Space for promotional material was lacking or one could
put less promotional material. But I don't know how much of the material was left.
General impression APAIE: Well attended - still small - conference, this facilitates networking. The quality of
sessions varied and the organizer should pay more attention to coherent topics.
University of Lausanne
Concerning the booth, I think it was very good as we could spot it easily because of the big flag and the T-shirts.
The conference itself was good for networking and to meet with partners, but the quality of the individual
conferences was not always very high in my view. Thank you again for your very efficient work in promoting Swiss
H.E. in Japan.
University of Geneva
Let me first thank you very much for all the work you did and the perfect welcoming you offered us. This is a
pleasure to collaborate with you. The booth was of a good size. It mixed perhaps a little bit the different institutions.
The main problem was more the conference center of Waseda which was not really made for that type of
conference. The reception at the Embassy was indeed a good idea which permitted us to re contact some of our
alumni. Thanks again for the organization. All my thanks goes to the Ambassador, too. As you know, we signed an
agreement with Keio University during our stay. We had also the opportunity to visit all our partner in Tokyo.
Following our contacts, we hope our collaboration with Todai to develop.
Further Impressions
Because the conference and exhibition is targeting professionals, the number of visitors and enquiries tended to be
much smaller at this event, compared to that of education fairs targeting students. Nevertheless, the joint exhibition
by Swiss Universities once again seemed to have been very helpful as a first contact for foreign delegates who
were looking for exchange and partnership opportunities with Switzerland, but did not have much preliminary
knowledge. Other European presence included the Bavarian Universities, the Austrian Exchange Service (OAD),
Study in Flanders, Center for International Mobility (Finland) and the German Academic Exchange Services
(DAAD).
The APAIE Conference & Exhibition 2009 will be held from April 15 to 17, 2009 at the Renmin University of China
in Beijing. The Asian education sector is developing at a faster pace than ever before, and more and more
institutions are looking to expand their reach in the global society. The importance of APAIE should increase in
tandem with this trend, along with its sister Associations EAIE (European Association for International Education),
NAFSA (Association of International Educators) and AIEA (Association of International Education Administrators).

University Agreements Overview
There are over 30 agreements between Swiss and Japanese universities. Further agreements are in the pipeline,
as evidence of good collaboration.
This year, ETH Zurich and Chiba University, Japan have signed a Memorandum of Understanding with the
objective of facilitating mutual friendship, academic research and educational cooperation between the two
institutions. The universities will cooperate in promoting both academic research and enhancing educational
opportunities for students. The collaboration will include the exchange of faculty members and researchers,
organization of joint research projects/conferences/meetings and the exchange of information and publications.
The two institutions also signed an agreement for a student exchange program as the first project under the new
relationship.
The University of Tokyo has also just recently opened its lab at the EPFL with the financial support of a major
Japanese company. In response, EPFL will open a lab at the University of Tokyo in the near future.

Founded in 1460, the oldest university in
Switzerland is noticeably enhancing the
dialogue between life sciences and culture,
two areas on which they have decided to focus
on for the last several years. Regarding the life
science domain, Basel has been providing
biocenters and molecular biology research
centers for more than 30 years. It is the only
university in Switzerland which offers a Master
of Nanosciences.

Switzerland’s Capital University is a public
institution with roots going back to the 16th
century. The 8 faculties offer a wide range of
BA, MA and PhD programs. The study
environment and the quality of life in Bern are
very high. And thanks to the relatively small of
the university, the ambience is friendly and
personal. Bern is internationally renowned for
its outstanding climate and astrophysics
research to name just a few. The 140 institutes
are located within walking distance of the main
building, overlooking the Jungfrau Mountain
region – the Top of Europe – and the old town,
a UNESCO world heritage site. The city of
Bern itself is embedded in a beautiful natural
environment with rolling hills, woods, lakes and
mountains.

international tradition. It offers a wide range of
different complete formations (BA, MA, and
Doctorate) in both languages and confers
bilingual degrees in certain branches. Some
classes are also taught in English. There are
five faculties composed of department and
institutes with interdisciplinary research and
teaching units. It offers various specific
research programs in different fields, namely
Federalism, European Law, Building Lease,
Ethics and Human Rights. In its Charter, the
university emphasizes to quality of education,
responsibility and fostering dialogue. A
particular focus is placed on the contact
between students and teachers. About one
quarter of the 37,000 inhabitants of Fribourg
are students.

The University of Lucerne is a young one.
Although its roots reach back to 1600, it has
only formed part of Switzerland’s twelve
universities since 2000.
The structure of the University is based on
three faculties and distinguished by a slim and
clearly identifiable profile. With its faculties of
theology, humanities and law, it concentrates
on three core areas and thus bundles
competence in humanities and trains qualified
jurists.
The convenient size of the University of
Lucerne provides students with a great degree
of freedom and innovative combination
possibilities. Study courses are offered in
traditional subjects as well as in overlapping
subjects (integrated); moreover, it is possible
to combine elements from different faculties.
The excellent support of students is a special
feature of the University of Lucerne.
Giving particular importance to training and
research, the University of Lausanne offers its
students a solid foundation in order to become
an intellectual and innovative force for the
future society.

The canton of Berne, with the capital of Switzerland is home to a million inhabitants. The
Berne University of Applied Sciences (BFH)
comprises six departments, at various locations in the city of Berne and around. The
individual schools offer assistance to help
students settle in and coordinate study and
social life, like cultural activities, sport, temporary accommodation and career advice.
Berne, Biel and Burgdorf are medieval cities,
which offer not only a beautiful surrounding
but also a wide variety of cultural events and
institutions. The Bern University of Applied
Sciences welcomes students from all around
the globe. Some of the schools maintain exchange programs with partner institutions and
encourage their own students to spend study
periods abroad.
The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is one of the
leading institutions in Switzerland with its
Schools of Applied Psychology; Architecture;
Civil Engineering and Geomatics; Academy of
Art and Design; Business; Teacher Education;
Engineering; Life Sciences as well as Social
Work. The courses provided by the FHNW are
practice oriented and market driven.
The FHNW, with its approx. 6000 students,
offers highly individualized study programs,
allowing the students to choose from a broad
variety of disciplinary curricula or to select
specific classes from the eight faculties mentioned above.
Application-oriented research and development (R&D) occupies a particularly strategic
position at the FHNW, which carries out research projects with partners.
The University of Applied Sciences of Eastern
Switzerland (FHO) is organized regionally and
has campuses at multiple locations. Modular
study programs allow students to design their
curriculum according to their personal preferences. Due to their practice-oriented education, based on a solid science foundation, students can graduate with an attractive professional profile and face promising perspectives
in the job market. The UAS offers an excellent
learning environment: small campuses, a
communal atmosphere, a good learning infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, small
study groups and highly qualified teachers.
International exchange programs with students and faculties enable fruitful cooperation
with partner institutions in North America,
Europe and South East Asia. The UAS offers
an increasing amount of courses in English.
Lucerne, the city of tourism and culture, is also
a city of education. The Lucerne University of
Applied Sciences and Arts (LUASA) is the
regional center for higher education in Lucerne — Switzerland and comprises five
schools with nearly 3’000 undergraduate and
over 2’000 postgraduate students. The FHZ
offers bachelor and master degrees in Engineering, Architecture, Economics, Social
Work, Art, Design and Music. Further education studies are based on the requirements of
our postgraduates and their employers alike,
and enhance professional practice. The FHZ
offers modules as well as courses, leading to
a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) or a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS). Research at
the FHZ is practice-based. Our research projects are derived from real-life situations.

A true vocational and training university, the
University of Applied Sciences of Western
Switzerland (HES-SO) welcomes more than
12 000 students in seven cantons: Bern, Fribourg, Geneva, Jura, Neuchâtel, Valais and
Vaud. Thus, this establishes it as the largest
advanced professional vocational training
complex in Switzerland.
Set up in 1998, the HES-SO provides university level teaching, highly focused on practical
experience in six main fields: engineering
sciences, design and visual arts, health, social work, music and theatre.
These high level courses prepare the student
to the conduct of professional activities requiring scientific knowledge and methods. They
are meant to guarantee a quick entry into the
labour market to whose trends and requirements the HES-SO gives close attention.

The University of Applied Sciences of Southern Switzerland (SUPSI) is one of the 7 Universities of Applied Sciences in Switzerland. It
has a university statute, focused on professional training and applied research. Together
with the University of Southern Switzerland
(USI), to which it is closely linked in terms of
collaboration activities and common institutions, it is the only Italian language university
pole in Switzerland, with almost 4’000 students
in the Lugano region.
The distinguishing features of SUPSI are that it
provides study opportunities to those who
have already gained some professional experience and who continue to operate in a
professional capacity, that the teaching program
incorporates

With approx. 10’000 students, the University
of Applied Sciences of Zurich (ZFH) is one of
the largest UASs in Switzerland. It offers a
broad range of Bachelor and Master programs
in all special fields (see below). Apart from
higher education, the institutes of the UAS of
Zurich also conduct application-based research and development. The knowledge thus
gained is regularly incorporated in education.
Numerous projects are conducted in cooperation with other higher education institutions,
private sector companies, public services and
administrations and non-profit organizations.
By offering their services, the institutes also
make their know-how available to others.
These activities ensure the transfer of knowledge and technology to the business and industrial sectors. The excellent infrastructure
and the attractive urban environment of Zurich
make UAS of Zurich the ideal place to study or
for applied research and development.
