Swiss Universities at APAIE 2008 - EDA
Schweizerische Eidgenossenschaf t Confédératio n suisse Confederazione Svizz era Confederaziun svizra Embassy of Switzerland in Japan State Secretariat for Education and Research SER Swiss Universities at APAIE 2008 Summary The Swiss excellence in higher education was presented as the Swiss Universities booth at APAIE 2008, the third annual conference & exhibition for professionals in education. The three day event, which was held from March 26 to 28, showcased the latest programs and developments from various universities and organizations. It offered visitors as well as exhibitors, ranging from educators to senior administrators in institutes of higher learning, a good opportunity to exchange ideas and pursue potential exchange alliances. The theme of the APIAE Conference & Exhibition 2008 (http://www.apaie.org), organized by the Asia-Pacific Association for International Education (APAIE) and hosted by Waseda University in Tokyo, was “The Next Wave in Asia-Pacific Higher Education”. With the goal of exploring the emerging trends in international education and exchange, the conference side of the event consisted of three keynote speeches, a roundtable of University Presidents and 50 sessions by over 160 speakers in the field of higher education. The overall event featured 764 participants from over 420 institutions of 55 countries / regions around the world. Of the Swiss institutions of higher learning jointly represented at the Swiss Universities’ booth, nine delegates from ETH Zurich and the Universities of Bern, Basel, Geneva, Lausanne, St. Gallen and Zurich attended to successfully elaborate on existing and possible collaborations with institutions not only in Japan, but from elsewhere in the globe. Particularly aggressive in approaching our exhibitors were their Korean and Taiwanese counterparts seeking a potential partnership. As for the Swiss participants, their wealth of experience with international conferences was well reflected in their tight schedule and many accomplishments. For example, the University of Geneva signed a collaboration agreement with Keio University at the site of the conference. They also deepened talks with the University of Tokyo during their stay in Japan. The University of Basel held talks towards a partnership agreement with Dokkyo University at their campus just outside Tokyo. Swiss Universities’ Booth The Swiss Universities’ exhibition was organized by the Science & Technology Office of the Swiss Embassy in Tokyo, which is in charge of promoting higher education at ETHs, Swiss Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Japan. Material provided by each university was displayed at the booth and presented to visitors according to their specific needs and interests. In addition, two documents giving a comprehensive and comparative overview of Swiss Universities and Universities of Applied Sciences in Japanese facilitated the communication with representatives from local institutions. The “Education, Research and Innovation in Switzerland” DVDs were also handed out so various institutions could introduce the dimensions of the Swiss educational landscape to their students. While some exhibitors at other sites experienced great difficulty in making new contacts, the Swiss flags, the Einstein logo T-shirt and the popular Einstein logo promotion bags also helped attract people to the Swiss booth. The S&T Office alone collected almost 50 new contacts. The problem at other locations was that because the exhibition was spread out on several floors of two buildings, the venue where no seminars were held had very few visitors. One such exhibitor was so disappointed after traveling across the Pacific with a good number of staffs and tons of materials, he was seriously considering not participating in future APAIE events. Please find some testimonials in the following: University of Bern Booth: The Swiss booth was very attractive, (set-up of pictures; raffle, coffee machine and friendly staff) though visitors will not have the recognition effect when attending another conference in the US, Asia or Europe as there is no corporate design of a Swiss Higher Education booth. Space for promotional material was lacking or one could put less promotional material. But I don't know how much of the material was left. General impression APAIE: Well attended - still small - conference, this facilitates networking. The quality of sessions varied and the organizer should pay more attention to coherent topics. University of Lausanne Concerning the booth, I think it was very good as we could spot it easily because of the big flag and the T-shirts. The conference itself was good for networking and to meet with partners, but the quality of the individual conferences was not always very high in my view. Thank you again for your very efficient work in promoting Swiss H.E. in Japan. University of Geneva Let me first thank you very much for all the work you did and the perfect welcoming you offered us. This is a pleasure to collaborate with you. The booth was of a good size. It mixed perhaps a little bit the different institutions. The main problem was more the conference center of Waseda which was not really made for that type of conference. The reception at the Embassy was indeed a good idea which permitted us to re contact some of our alumni. Thanks again for the organization. All my thanks goes to the Ambassador, too. As you know, we signed an agreement with Keio University during our stay. We had also the opportunity to visit all our partner in Tokyo. Following our contacts, we hope our collaboration with Todai to develop. Further Impressions Because the conference and exhibition is targeting professionals, the number of visitors and enquiries tended to be much smaller at this event, compared to that of education fairs targeting students. Nevertheless, the joint exhibition by Swiss Universities once again seemed to have been very helpful as a first contact for foreign delegates who were looking for exchange and partnership opportunities with Switzerland, but did not have much preliminary knowledge. Other European presence included the Bavarian Universities, the Austrian Exchange Service (OAD), Study in Flanders, Center for International Mobility (Finland) and the German Academic Exchange Services (DAAD). The APAIE Conference & Exhibition 2009 will be held from April 15 to 17, 2009 at the Renmin University of China in Beijing. The Asian education sector is developing at a faster pace than ever before, and more and more institutions are looking to expand their reach in the global society. The importance of APAIE should increase in tandem with this trend, along with its sister Associations EAIE (European Association for International Education), NAFSA (Association of International Educators) and AIEA (Association of International Education Administrators). The Berne University of Applied Sciences (BFH) comprises six departments, at various locations in the city of Berne and around. The individual schools offer assistance to help students settle in and coordinate study and social life, like cultural activities, sport, temporary accommodation and career advice. Berne, Biel and Burgdorf are medieval cities, which offer not only a beautiful surrounding but also a wide variety of cultural events and institutions. The Bern University of Applied Sciences welcomes students from all around the globe. Some of the schools maintain exchange programs with partner institutions and encourage their own students to spend study periods abroad. The University of Applied Sciences Northwestern Switzerland (FHNW) is one of the leading institutions in Switzerland with its Schools of Applied Psychology; Architecture; Civil Engineering and Geomatics; Academy of Art and Design; Business; Teacher Education; Engineering; Life Sciences as well as Social Work. The courses provided by the FHNW are practice oriented and market driven. The FHNW, with its approx. 6000 students, offers highly individualized study programs, allowing the students to choose from a broad variety of disciplinary curricula or to select specific classes from the eight faculties mentioned above. Application-oriented research and development (R&D) occupies a particularly strategic position at the FHNW, which carries out research projects with partners. The University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland (FHO) is organized regionally and has campuses at multiple locations. Modular study programs allow students to design their curriculum according to their personal preferences. Due to their practice-oriented education, based on a solid science foundation, students can graduate with an attractive professional profile and face promising perspectives in the job market. The UAS offers an excellent learning environment: small campuses, a communal atmosphere, a good learning infrastructure, well-equipped laboratories, small study groups and highly qualified teachers. International exchange programs with students and faculties enable fruitful cooperation with partner institutions in North America, Europe and South East Asia. The UAS offers an increasing amount of courses in English. Lucerne, the city of tourism and culture, is also a city of education. The Lucerne University of Applied Sciences and Arts (LUASA) is the regional center for higher education in Lucerne — Switzerland and comprises five schools with nearly 3’000 undergraduate and over 2’000 postgraduate students. The FHZ offers bachelor and master degrees in Engineering, Architecture, Economics, Social Work, Art, Design and Music. Further education studies are based on the requirements of our postgraduates and their employers alike, and enhance professional practice. The FHZ offers modules as well as courses, leading to a Master of Advanced Studies (MAS), a Diploma of Advanced Studies (DAS) or a Certificate of Advanced Studies (CAS).
