Friday, 19 NovemberSweden-Finland Golf Challenge
FCCJ takes the Stora Enso Cup again!
The 17th Stora Enso Cup, the golf challenge between the Swedish and
Finnish Chambers was played on Friday, 19 November at Taiheiyo Club
- Narita Course in Chiba Prefecture. The event was played in nice autumn
weather - sunny, although a bit chilly in the morning.
32 players participated in the
competition (18 from FCCJ, 14 from
SCCJ, including three guests.
The Finnish Chamber came on top
now for the fifth time in a row, this
time beating the Swedish Chamber
by a fairly large margin, 3.1 strokes on
average per player, 82.5 versus 85.8
as average for the best 80% in each
team. This was the ninth time the
FCCJ won, and the FCCJ now has one
more win than the SCCJ, nine wins
against 8.

ＦＣＣＪがストゥーラエンソカップを再度保持
第1７回ストゥーラエンソカップ、ＳＣＣＪ対ＦＣＣＪのゴルフコンペが
11月19日（金）千葉県の太平洋クラブ成田コースにて素晴らしい秋の天気
の中、開催されました。
今回は32名が参加（うちＦＣＣＪからは18名、ＳＣＣＪからは14名（うち
ゲスト3名））。ＦＣＣＪが５回
連続して優勝となりましたが、
今回はＦＣＣＪチームが大差（
打数3.1打の差）でＳＣＣＪに勝
ち、平均スコアはＦＣＣＪチー
ムが82.5打、ＳＣＣＪチームが
85.8打でした（チームのベスト
80%の平均を計算）。
これまでの結果、ＦＣＣＪは９
勝、ＳＣＣＪは８勝。

Aoyama View – Finland in Japan News Focus
Another year is coming to its end – it’s time
have a look what did we achieve in our efforts to
promote Finland here. Below I will try to list what
I thought was best this year. It’s all based on my
personal observations, so it might well be you
don’t agree with me. Apologies in advance.
From “Finland in Japan” viewpoint I think the
best achievement last year was the Hirameki
design exhibition. The Finnish design is well
known and appreciated here, but what most
people know are the same old names: Aalto,
Iittala, Arabia, Marimekko etc. What we got
with Hirameki was a totally new wave of names,
styles and products in a wide range: furniture, fabrics, utensils, clothes,
accessories, even backpacks, tent sauna and garden tools. The two curators
and the two ladies, who put it all together did a really good job and were well
backed up by The Finnish Institute. Haven’t heard how much publicity they
got in the media, but for all of us who visited there and saw it with our own
eyes, it certainly deserved plenty.
Of course, there was the usual cavalcade of other cultural events, too, if
you were not interested in design: Finland Film Festival, Finland Music Fest,
classical conductor visits, jazz with Five Corners Quintet making it to Blue
Note, “the world’s finest jazz club”. Hope they, too, made good publicity for
brand “Finland” that we all can benefit from.
Our Ambassador certainly made good publicity with his personal cooking
show in television. It was so well received by the viewers that the particular
channel was still last week carrying on it by interviewing people at the
Embassy Independence Day party. They got me doing in front of camera
what I know best: swinging down Lapin Kulta and telling how good it is.
Among FCCJ monthly luncheons I think the No.1 this year was the one
with Finance Minister Katainen in the early part of the year. Don’t recall
being ever so impressed by a Finnish politician’s presentation. Or by any
politician’s presentation. He was simply so knowledgeable and managed to
make it all sound sincere. A rare talent. No wonder they say he will be the
next prime minister.
Finland-Japan Culture and Friendship Society’s annual gala concert is
always a big event, too, and this year it was a very special one with the great
piano master Izumi Tateno playing with one hand only – his other one was
dramatically incapacitated by a paralysis some years ago. That must be just
about the worst thing that can happen to a musician, yet it has not slowed
down the Finnish-Japanese veteran: he keeps touring and giving concerts
almost as busy as before. His playing that night was so impressive – some
moments I could have sworn there was two hands in play! The splendid
performance overcoming such invalidity put a smile on everybody’s face.
Princess Takamado gave us the honor of being there that night with her
daughter and she gave Finland the pleasure of visiting there in summer.
Heard she attended Porvoo Avanti modern music event that featured this
year Japanese composers thanks to Seppo Kimanen – he is continuing
the valuable cultural bridge building he did here at Embassy. The energetic
princess was also in Finnish media bonging birds in some forest early in the
morning – guess such publicity about Japan also benefits all of us here in
helping to lift Japan profile in the eyes of our head office masters.
What other news the Finns might have read about Japan? For the sports
fans probably the biggest thing was the good performance of “Samurai
Blue” in the South Africa World Cup. Japan’s play was maybe not flashy, but
certainly spirited and effective helping it to reach Top 16. Even the final nail
that stopped Japan from reaching Top 8 was just one accidental penalty kick
failure - the very last one! – and not a crushing loss with big numbers like in
case of Japan’s own “sweet enemy” Korea.
Other than that Japan probably made the headlines in Finnish media with
the political feuds stepped up by its neighbours China, Russia and North
Korea, all incidents that happened in a space of recent months. I don’t read
Finnish news so deeply these days, but somehow got impression that once
again Japan did not do well with worldwide publishing of its own story. At
least some of the Finnish headlines I read seemed to say that the traveler
was “claimed” to have banged on Japanese ships and that the islands in
question were “disputed” rather than recognized part of Japan. Well, in case
of Northern islands, it’s true that Russia has kept the 4 islands so close to
Hokkaido shore occupied ever since it invaded them in 1945, so effectively
they have been part of Soviet Union/Russia already 65 years.
For next year, I wish that news about Finland here and vice versa about
Japan over there would flow equally each way, increase understanding of
each other even more, and that there will be as many successful promotional
events about Japan in Finland as we have had and hopefully will have again
about Finland here in Japan.

Getting into Christmas Mood!

Christmas
Luncheon was held for the eleventh time
at the Embassy of Finland on Thursday 9,
December. The 36 participants enjoyed a
delicious seafood style Christmas lunch
prepared by the Embassy’s chef.
Ms. Johanna Kotkajärvi, who joined
the Embassy in August as MinisiterCounsellor at the Embassy gave us a brief
update on current issues in the FinlandJapan relations and her experiences
in Japan during her first three months.
Ms.Kotkajärvi, also expressed her
satisfaction for the good cooperation with
the FCCJ and business community, and hoped it would continue and further
develop

the honor of having one of the most
prominent Finnish politicians and the
second longest serving (5,787 days!)
minister in the history of Finland, Dr.
Paavo Väyrynen, Minister for Foreign
Trade and Development, as our guest
speaker.
Minister Väyrynen, arriving from
South Korea the same morning, was
accompanied by a business delegation.
The event was attended by 51 persons,
incl. the business delegation.

Friday, 29 October - FCCJ Special Luncheon
Hirameki Design x Finland Preview
In connection with the opening of the Hirameki Design x Finland exhibition at the Living Design
Center Ozone, Shinjuku Park Tower on Friday, 29 October, the FCCJ organized a special luncheon
meeting with the curators of the Exhibition, Harri Koskinen and Ilkka Suppanen.
After enjoying the lunch at the iittala cafe, the participants joined the curator’s tour through three
different exhibtion areas, presenting most of the designs of the 64 companies and design groups
participating in the exhibition.
Hirameki Design x Finland was the largest Finnish Design Event ever organized in Japan.
The event was attended by 17 members.

イーッタラカフェにて昼食をとった後、参加者はキュレーターの案内で３つの異なる展示会場を観賞しまし
た。そこには６４の会社やデザイングループからのデザインが展示されています。
