Ministerial Guest Speaker
イルッカ・カネルヴァ外務大臣
At our first luncheon meeting after the summer
break on Tuesday 28 August at Hotel Okura we had a
prominent guest from Finland as our guest speaker - Mr.
Ilkka Kanerva, Minister for Foreign Affairs. The theme
of his presentation was “Current challenges facing the
Finnish society”.
Minister Kanerva was in Japan for the Athletics World
Championships held in Osaka (Aug 25 - Sep 2) as a
Council Member of the International Association of
Athletics Federations (IAAF).
In Tokyo, he met with his Japanese colleague, Minister
for Foreign Affairs Nobutaka Machimura, who received
his Finnish counterpart already the day after he had
taken up his Cabinet post. This was the first ministerial
meeting of Foreign Minister Machimura’s term of office,
which began on 27 August.
The luncheon was attended by 62 members and
guests, including Embassy of Finland invitees from
Japanese ministries, press and business life.

カネルヴァ大臣は世界陸上大阪大会（8月25日～9月
2日）に国際陸上競技連盟メンバーとして参加するために来
日しました。
東京にて、彼は日本の同僚とする町村外務大臣とすで
に会談しました。町村信孝氏が外務大臣に任命された翌日
であり、町村大臣にとっても最初の政府間の会談でありまし
た。（8月27日）
今回の昼食会には、メンバーおよび、フィンランド大使館
が招待した日本内閣の方、プレスおよびビジネス関係者など
のゲスト、62名が参加。

The European Team takes
the DaimlerChrysler Cup !
The European and North American business communities in Tokyo held
their fifth friendly golf tournament at Atsugi Kokusai Country Club on 28
September. Sponsored DaimlerChrysler and 28 other companies, the
tournament brought together 138 players from the American and Canadian
chambers of commerce on one side and the European Business Council on
the other side. 14 FCCJ members participated in the event.
The European Team won this time with an average score of 75.49 for the
best 80% of the players. The competition was tight, the North American
Team average was 76.09.
This was actually the last DaimlerChrysler Cup as the name DaimlerChrysler
will disappear soon. But the event will prevail, and DaimlerChrysler
Japan’s Hans Tempel announced that Daimler and Chrysler have agreed
to continue together as title sponsors of the North America - Europe Golf
Challenge, so it will be renamed to the Daimler and Chrysler Cup.

ヨーロッパと北米の在日ビジネス団体は、第５回ゴルフトーナメントを９月２８日厚木国
際カントリー倶楽部にて開催しました。このイベントのスポンサーはダイマークライスラー
および２８の企業、大会には一方にアメリカとカナダの商工会議所、もう一方にヨーロッパ
商工会議所・ビジネス団体から合計１３８名が参加。ＦＣＣＪから１４名が参加しました。
競技はストロークプレイ方式で行われ、ハンディキャップをふまえ両チームのベスト
８０％の平均スコアを計算。ヨーロッパチームは平均スコア75.49、また北米チームは
76.09で、わずかの差ヨーロッパチームが優勝しました。
このダイマークライスラーカップの名は今回が最後となり無くなります。しかしながらこの
イベントは慣例化しており、ゆえにダイマークライスラー・ジャパン社のハンス・テンペル
氏は次のように報告しました。ダイマー社およびクライスラー社は北欧対ヨーロッパのゴル
フコンペのタイトルスポンサーを継続する事に同意し、このイベントは今後、ダイマー＆ク

Honto ni arigato!!
It has been now one month since
I left Tokyo. I have started my new
career in Outotec in Espoo. In Finnish
standards I have decent distance
to my job from home. It takes only
15 minutes from door to door in rush
hour.
Of course the weather has been
typical Finnish Autumn; a lot of rain
and cool winds. Today (the 24th of
September) the night is already longer than the day in Finland.
It will get worse now for 3 months! I miss Japanese warm autumn
already. The best reason for me was the winter in Japan. It is
always so much light compared to Finnish Winter.
It has been so nice to notice that Japan has been discussed
so much in Finnish media. Even this morning the former press
attaché from Tokyo had an article on the second page in
Helsingin Sanomat about Finland and Japan relationship.
It is evident that the work done in Japan to promote Japan
to Finns has been successful. I hope that the work continues
consistently.
During my presence in Japan I also noticed that the image of
Finland reflected more the reality in the Japanese eyes. Finland
was not only about the Santa Claus and Moomin charachters,
but also about good education and high technology. It is very
important the image building for Finland will go on in the future,
too. One way to improve the image in Japan would be the
innovation centre of Finland, which I hope will be established
in the near future to Tokyo.
I would like to remind you all who represent Finnish enterprises
in Japan, to remember to utilize Finpro and the staff working
for it to assist and support you in your challenges while entering
to Japanese market. Furthermore, it is worthwhile noticing that

FCCJ Luncheon Meeting 26 September
At our September luncheon meeting
we had an interesting and engaging
guest speaker, Mr. Yasuto Fujita,
President of K.K. Integrate who spoke
about “Entrance strategy of Xylitol into
Japanese market”
Mr. Fujita joined Xyrofinn Far East
(which later became Cultor Japan
and is now Danisco Japan) in 1992
and was instrumental in introducing
Xylitol into the Japanese market. He
founded K.K. Integrate in May this
year.
Yasuto Fujita started his presentation
by explaining about his personal
background,
which
started
at
Ajinomoto where he was responsible
for the sweetener “aspartame”. When Ajinomoto started to discuss a
joint venture with Finnish Sugar regarding introduction of xylitol on the
Japanese market, Mr. Fujita was the person in charge from Ajinomoto’s
side. The joint venture did never materialize but he left Ajinomoto in
1992 to found Xyrofinn Far East together with Tero Huopaniemi. Xyrofinn
eventually because Clutor, then Danisco-Cultor and is now a part of
the Danisco group.
It took five years to get xylitol approved in Japan (in 1992). It became
quite rapidly a big
success. One of the
main reasons was a
very inventive and wide
PR campaign, which
brought a substantial
public awarenes of xylitol
and its benenefits. Xylitol
products today, mainly
chewing gum, but also
drinks and totthpaste,
account for a 200 billion
yen sales..
Mr. Fujita wrote a book
in 2006 titled “99.9% success set up”, which has become the second
most sold business publication on Amazon Japan. In May this year he
founded K.K. Integrate, an Integrated Marketing Communications
company.

New Press and Culture Counsellor at the Embassy
Professor Seppo Kimanen has been appointed Counsellor
(press and culture) at the Embassy of Finland from 1 October.
Seppo Kimanen was born in 1949 in Helsinki. He studied
the cello first at the Sibelius-Academy and later at Prague
and Paris conservatoires and elsewhere. Mr. Kimanen’s
professional career started in 1971 as lecturer in the cello at
the Turku Conservatoire. During 1974-77 he was 3rd solo cellist
in the Finnish Radio Symphony Orchestra and 1975-91 teacher
of the cello and chamber music at the Sibelius Academy.
In 1970 together with his wife, Yoshiko Arai, he founded the
Kuhmo Chamber Music festival, which has been hailed as
one of the best music festivals anywhere. Besides 35 years
as director of the Kuhmo Festival Mr. Kimanen has acted
as executive director of the Helsinki Festival 1977-80. He has
also been advisor or artistic director for numerous other festivals such as
Kitakyushu International Music Festival (1988-97), Dubrovnik Festival in former
Yugoslavia (1985-89) and Sibelius and beyond - festival in London (2007.)
Mr. Kimanen is also founder member of the Jean Sibelius String Quartet
which was established in 1980. The quartet has performed at the Kuhmo
Chamber Music Festival every year since 1981 and it ranks among the most
sought-after quartets in Scandinavia.
In Finland he is famous for his contribution to the growth in popularity of
chamber music. He is also a popular lecturer, columnist in many newspapers
and magazines and host of radio programs. He has made several CD:s for
Finlandia Records, Ondine and for other labels. Mr. Kimanen was awarded
with State Prize for Music in 1988 and the Pro Finlandia medal in 1986 and
he was honoured to receive the Honorary title of Professor in 1999 and the
State artist professorship in 2000. In March 2005 Kimanen moved to London
where he worked as director of the Finnish Institute until September 2007.

就任
フィンランド大使館新参事官（報道・文化）
１０月からセッポ・キマネン氏がフィンランド大使館の参事官
（報道・文化）に就任しました。
セッポ・キマネン氏は1949年ヘルシンキ生まれ。彼は、最初
はシベリウスアカデミーで、その後プラハやパリの音楽院などで
チェロを学びました。キマネン氏はプロ活動を1971年にトゥル
ク音楽学校のチェロ講師としてスタート。1974～77年はフィンラ
ンドラジオ・シンフォニーオーケストラの第3チェロソリストとなり、
1975～91年にはシベリウスアカデミーにおいてチェロと室内楽
の講師を務めました。
1970年、妻の荒井淑子氏と共に彼は、クフモ室内楽音楽祭
を設立し、これは最高の音楽祭の一つであると評価されていま
す。35年間このクフモ音楽祭の監督をする傍らキマネン氏は、
1977～80年ヘルシンキ・フェスティバルにおいても執行役員を
務め、彼はその他多数の音楽祭のアドバイザーやアートディレクターとして活
躍しました。その中には、北九州国際音楽祭（1988～97年）、ロンドンのフェス
ティバル（2007年）もあります。
また、キマネン氏は1980年にシベリウス弦楽四重奏団の創設メンバーであ
り、クフモ室内楽音楽祭にはカルテット結成後、1981年から毎年参加してお
り、北欧でもっとも人気のあるカルテットであります。
キマネン氏はフィンランドでは室内楽の人気度を高めることに貢献したこと
で知られており、また彼は人気のある講師であり、新聞や雑誌のコラムニストお
よびラジオ番組の司会者でもあります。彼はフィンランディア・レコード社、オン
ディーヌ社などから幾つかのＣＤをリリース、1988年に音楽部門賞や1986年に
プロ・フィンランディア・メダルを受賞し、1999年名誉教授の称号、2000年国の
芸術教授の地位を得ました。2005年3月、キマネン氏はロンドンに移住し、そこ
で2007年9月までフィンランド・センターの所長として勤務しました。
