Issei Day – A tribute to the Seniors of
our Community
The Board of Directors of the Japanese Canadian Cultural Centre
extends an invitation to Issei Day on Sunday October 6, 2013 and
would like to welcome all who are 70 years of age and older.
This year will be the 51st year of celebrating Issei Day. Last
year just over 400 Issei, Nisei, Sansei and Ijusha gathered in the
Kobayashi Hall to celebrate this annual event.
The day is full of activities, with entertainment of songs, odori
and sing-alongs. Please come out and enjoy this special day! As
usual there will be a wonderful and tasty bento served during the
intermission.
The program begins at 2:00pm and concludes around 5:00pm.
With our growing numbers, and due to our space limitations – we
require that everyone pre-register at 416-441-2345 by September
27. It is wonderful to see so many of our seniors come to this event
but we are now at our maximum capacity to ensure everyone is
able to sit, relax and enjoy the afternoon. We will have an overflow
area available if required.
We look forward to seeing you.

JCCC Family & Friends Golf Tournament
The JCCC 17th Annual
Family & Friends Golf
Tournament (on Sunday
September 8, 2013 at
Rolling Hills Golf Club) is
still accepting registrations.
For inquiries please contact
Sharon Marubashi (cochair) at 647-291-4751 (
email marubashi@rogers.

This is a chance for
families and friends to
share a fun day of golf – all
skill levels welcome and
there are lots of prizes to be won! After a great day of golfing, there
will be presentations and dinner back at the JCCC. We encourage
everyone to join with grandparents, aunts, uncles, brothers, sisters,
moms and dads, or just a group of friends. You can play scramble
or individual format. Application forms are available at the JCCC
reception area. We also welcome hole sponsors – corporate
or family - some sponsor levels include your green fees and
contributes to our Heritage programming at the JCCC. Our biggest
sponsor, DundeeWealth (Marty Kobayashi), is also generously
providing refreshments while out on the course!
Committee Members Wanted!
Good with kids? Want to be more involved but don't know where
to start? The Winter Family Festival is looking for enthusiastic
volunteers to join the committee this year. This is a fun, energetic
committee dedicated to making the 3rd annual WFF the best it can
be. Contact Yuki Hipsh at [email protected] if interested.
September Movie: Wolf Children
On Wednesday September 18, we will be screening the animation
movie Wolf Children. Wolf Children, winner of the 2012 Japanese
Academy Award for Best Animation Feature. A review of the film
was published in Nikkei Voice’s Holiday Issue. We thank Nikkei
Voice for their permission to use the article:
Wolf Children
Wolf Children is writer/director Mamoru Hosoda’s third major film
following The Girl Who Leapt through Time and Summer Wars.
It is a family film whose themes of identity will resonate with
Nikkei families and the “hapa” children of "kokusai kekkon" mixed
marriages. Hosoda is an emerging master of modern Japanese
anime and one of the young animators often compared to, and by
many, expected to fill the shoes of, the great Hayao Miyazaki.
His first two films are widely accepted as superb examples
of the form, featuring a distinct visual palette and elaborate scifi plotting that never loses sight of the fundamental human
underpinnings of his narratives.
Wolf Children is the story of Hana, a college student who
meets a gentle young man who is also a wolf and able to transform
himself from human to wolf form. They fall in love, marry and soon
produce two “wolf children”: a daughter Yuki (snow) and a son Ame
(rain). To hide this fact they live furtively, but happily, in a quiet
corner of the city.
When the wolf father passes away, a shattered Hana moves
her children to a remote house in an idyllic rural village in the
mountains, away from the probing eyes of city landlords and family
services. The focus of the film is her raising of the children and
their development into young adulthood.
Wolf Children presents a much less elaborate narrative than
earlier films like Summer Wars, but instead carries a deceptive
and significant depth. Like his other films, Hosoda’s extraordinary
characters are grounded in a realistic everyday world and his
sometimes fantastical situations play out in a very naturalistic
manner. Wolf Children is not a busy film - it is not packed with
incident -but rather unfolds at a leisurely and considered pace. It
is a quiet, earnest contemplation of the relations between mothers
and their children, harmony within communities and, in particular,
coming to terms with and choosing one’s identity. It is very much
a family film but not because it contains discreet elements, some
aimed at adults, others for children; but rather because of its
deeply-felt, uncluttered story-telling, gorgeous visuals and relevant
family themes.

In the Library: Japanese Literature Today
Talking “Monkey Business” with Two Up-and-Coming
Young Japanese Authors
Monkey Business, is the only
literary journal in the English
language
that
publishes
contemporary Japanese fiction,
is edited by York professor Ted
Goossen, and by Motoyuki Shibata
who teaches at the University of
Tokyo. In 2011, they brought three
Japanese writers to the JCCC and
conducted a lively conversation
with the audience, about Japanese
culture today and the Fukushima
disaster.
In September, two
young writers—Masatsugu Ono,
a novelist shortlisted three times
for the Akutagawa Prize, and
Yoko Hayasuke, a writer who
made her debut in the Japanese
version of Monkey Business—will
visit the city, to engage in another
conversation at the new JCCC
library about the Japanese literary
scene and what is going on in
Japan today.
All are welcome but space
is limited. Please pre-register at
416-441-2345. Light refreshments
will be served. The conversations
will be in Japanese with English
interpretation.
Date: Tuesday September 10, 2013

Koji Yamaguchi Tsugaru Shamisen
Ensemble Comes to the JCCC
Shamisen star Koji Yamaguchi will
bring his thrilling 10 person ensemble
the Kobayashi Hall for a concert to

The Tsugaru Shamisen is a
traditional instrument with roots in
Aomori Prefecture and has a very
unique and exciting sound and style.
The concert will feature traditional
shamisen pieces and even a rendition
of “Oh, Canada.” Tsugaru Shamisen
has been called the “music of the
Japanese soul” and will certainly
move and fascinate Canadian
audiences.
Yamaguchi-san’s grandmother was a shamisen teacher
and it was under her influence that he has become a performer
celebrated not only in Japan but also internationally. Yamaguchisan has been the recipient of numerous awards throughout Japan.

along with Kenichi Yoshida, producer of international superstar duo
the Yoshida Brothers.

(Japanese stories, and/or written by Japanese/Nikkei authors), and
Japanese will be accepted.
Please kindly note that any duplicated books may be sold at
the JCCC’s annual bazaar.

Thank you for your cooperation and support for the JCCC Library.
This November 2 and 3, the
JCCC will again find itself at the
centre of the Asian-Canadian
community as we gather at 6
Garamond Court for The Road to
Asia Festival.
The Road to Asia Festival
2013 is a two-day festival celebrating the richness and exciting
diversity of Asian culture, all under one roof. The festival creates
a thriving multicultural atmosphere in which individual cultures are
highlighted through their traditional food, arts and crafts, music,
dance and martial arts.
Last year’s festival created a rich mix of the cultures of 10
different Asian nations and was visited by approximately 3,000
people. We are hoping to see all of our previous participants
returning this year including Myanmar, Thailand, Lao, Philippines,
Indonesia, China, India, Taiwan, Vietnam, Tibet and, of course,
Japan. We hope to celebrate with more of everything that makes
The Road to Asia Festival so much fun.
This festival takes the JCCC’s motto of “Friendship Through
Culture” to a whole new level. Please keep an eye out for more
information in the October issue and plan to join us for another
exciting trip along the Road to Asia.

Sedai Corner
Refreshing Perspectives
The quick approach of autumn always
brings with it a look to educational
pursuits. Sedai itself has been both
sharpening skill sets in updating our
web content and video processing,
and also learning even more from the
community through assisting with the finishing touches of the soon
to be unveiled Moriyama Nikkei Heritage Centre. Integrating video
content to be made available in the new exhibit space, Sedai hopes
its many voices will make a marked addition and presence for future
visitors.
This month, Sedai would like to thank Hajime Kobayashi
and Takayuki Nagano for the generous donation of their time,
memories, and information to the Sedai Project. In speaking with
Canadian Nikkei who experienced life in Japan directly following
the war, Sedai hopes to deepen its understanding and breadth
of knowledge in continually creating a more inclusive narrative.
All stories and perspectives are valuable, and the Sedai Project
continues to dedicate itself towards a fully inclusive representation
of the community’s history.
If you, your family, or someone you know, has memories that
should be recorded (including experience with moving to Japan
following the war), please contact Elizabeth Fujita, Sedai Project
Coordinator, at [email protected] or 416-441-2345 ext
303, so that everyone’s story can be included in our community’s
legacy!
A Staged Reading of Scenes from the
Mitch Miyagawa Play, The Plum Tree
Mitch Miyagawa’s soulful play
unfolds in 1989, the year after
Japanese Canadians received
an apology from the federal
government for their internment
during World War II.
Goaded on by the spirit of his late
Uncle Mas, George Murakami
has returned to the farm his
grandparents’ were expelled from. In George’s search for a tangible
connection to his past, he forms an adversarial relationship with
Frieda Wagner, the present owner of the farm and an immigrant to
Canada from Germany following World War II.
All are welcome to attend this free staged reading of The Plum
Tree, a play which, until now, has never been performed east of the
Rocky Mountains.
Come out on Sunday October 13, 2013 at 2:00pm, and
share in what the actors David Fujino, Diane Gordon, and Peter
Kosaka, have to offer. They are directed by Brenda Kamino. Free
admission.
This special reading is sponsored by the Endowment Fund of
the National Association of Japanese Canadians and the Greater
Toronto Chapter of the NAJC as part of the 25thAnniversary
celebrations on the winning of Redress.
Okinawa Comes to the JCCC for an Unforgettable Night of Music and Dance
On July 31, Karakoro’s performance of Okinawan EISA filled a sold-out Kobayashi Hall with music, dance, passion and smiles. Guests also

Natsu Matsuri /Obon Festival Weekend: Festival Fun in the Sun!
This year marked the beginning of what we hope will be a great new tradition! The Natsu Masturi and Obon Festival included some new
traditional activities and decorations that are traditionally associated with Tanabata celebrations.
Saturday saw the dawning of a beautiful summer day. It was a perfect day for the record crowds that turned up for this fun festival.
This year saw many families and other visitors at the JCCC dressed in their yukata and enjoying a wonderful day of traditional Japanese
festival activities. During the afternoon there were games and activities for the children, including suikawari (watermelon smash) and kingyo
tsuri (fishing game). There was a record number of food vendors with choices including a somen bar, shaved ice, chicken karage, takoyaki
and lemonade. As the sun began to set, the dancers circled the centre of the JCCC’s parking lot, marking the beginning of Bon Odori. We
finished off the night with popsicles for everyone.
This festival is always a special one because of the tremendous co-operative effort by many community organizations. Very special
thanks go out to our wonderful vendors, the Toronto Buddhist Temple, The New Japanese Canadian Association, the JCCC Heritage Artsu
Matsuri committee, Mr. Ishii, all our wonderful volunteers and to Constantin (our dedicated A/V technician extraordinaire).
We hope to see everyone next year!

Arigato Day
Kamp Kodomo 2013
The JCCC held its annual Arigato Day on Sunday July 21. With
about 270 volunteers in attendance, the afternoon started with
some rousing games of Bingo. The continuing high numbers are a
great testament to the many volunteers at the JCCC. Not only can
we rely on the continuing support of the seasoned veterans, but we
also have so many new volunteers who have come out to support
some of our newer programs. Chef Kunio Ishii of Torii Ichii Catering
prepared a delicious spread of food in a fabulous buffet.
To end the evening, there were two awards presentations. It
started with Min Yatabe and Frank Moritsugu presenting the Nisei
Veterans Award to Martin Pellikka. Then the JCCC presented
certificates to the 19 recipients of the Ontario Volunteer Service
Awards for 2013. These recipients were recognized by the Ministry
of Immigration and Citizenship at an awards ceremony held in
June.
The JCCC appreciates the many talents and skills of their
volunteers. Their energy and enthusiasm are a part of the
JCCC’s programs, events and just about every other aspect of the
operation of the Centre. Arigato Day is just a small measure of our
gratitude.
Thank you very much and Arigato Gozaimasu!!!!
It was another wonderful summer with the Kamp Kodomo. More
than 50 children were involved in many different activities that kept
them active, energized and engrossed in the Japanese culture.
This summer featured 3 weeks of Kamp and each week, once
again, featured a theme. From “Traditional Japan” to “International
Japan” to “The Olympics”, each session included many of our
favourite workshops, like cooking, judo, iaido, and ikebana. We
also journeyed across the city for trips to the Gardiner Museum, the
Japan Foundation and the Ontario Science Centre. The children
had so much to do.
The success of Kamp Kodomo Summer 2013 could not have
been possible without the dedication, enthusiasm and patience of
the staff and many volunteers who helped at the camp. Without
their help, Kamp Kodomo would not have been as much fun,
nor would it have run as smoothly as it did! A special thank you
to Krysten: a first time, head teacher. Another thank you to our
volunteers: Arfana, Erica, Jaclyn, Jeff, Garrett, Rachel, and Ryan.
Together you helped to make the campers experience memorable.
As well, many thanks to the dedicated instructors who rearranged
their busy schedules or took time off of work to come and teach the
campers: Dawna Kobayashi, JCCC Judo Kai, JCCC Iaido, JCCC
Naginata, JCCC Kendo Club, Ikenobo Ikebana, Discover Japan,
Keiko Omori and the Himawari Buyo Kai. Your support of Kamp
Kodomo and the JCCC is an inspiration.
We hope that everyone will join us for Kamp Kodomo March

JCCC Foundation:
Relief Update
Japan Earthquake
Following the successful
launch of the Foundation’s
Japan Earthquake Relief
Scholarship
Program
earlier this year, we are
happy to report that the first
five scholarship recipients
at
Iwate
Prefectural
University have been
selected. Five deserving
candidates who have Shari Hosaki and the President of Iwate
Prefectural University in February, 2013.
suffered personal losses
as a result of the 3.11
triple disaster (earthquake, tsunami and nuclear meltdown) in the
Tohoku region, have been approved by the Foundation and are set
to receive their four year scholarships beginning this coming school
year. We expect to receive and approve candidates from the three
other universities shortly; namely Tohoku University, Fukushima
Medical University and East Japan International University, and we
will continue to keep you updated.
In keeping with our pledge to continue to raise awareness and
funds for this worthy cause, we have recently worked with students
who participated in the Kizuna Project from Malvern Collegiate
Institute in Toronto. These students travelled to the Tohoku region
in March of this year for a student exchange program sponsored by
the Japanese embassy. Working tirelessly during their final exam
period, these students presented an amazing night in celebration
of Japanese culture to raise funds for the Japan Earthquake Relief
Fund and they raised almost $4000.00. Our thanks to the Malvern
“Kizuna” staff, students and their families for their hard work,
incredible talent and big hearts!
