occur in mountainous areas
due to collapsing elevated rock
formations and ground areas.

Prepare a backpack to take with you in case of disaster.
Do not use a suit case!
Prepare items necessary for you and your family members to survive
for the first three days without any assistance.

Things to discuss with your family
When a large earthquake hits, you may not be able to meet with your family for several days.
Or you can not even reach them by phone.
Discuss the following points with your family in advance (Use page 30 for a record).
●In general, where are your family members during the daytime and at night?
●Discuss the places to meet your family both during the daytime and at night.
●Are there any friends or acquaintances who you can ask to help you?
●Who has a mobile phone? Learn how to use "Disaster message board" (page 13-14).
●Public schools are most likely to be designated as emergency shelters. If your children go to public schools, it is better to meet your family members there.

If you are at home...
Put your shoes on and
cover your head with
cap/hat or cushion.
Take your emergency
kit (p.7-8) with you.
Do not use an elevator.
Use the stairs to escape.

Be Ready to Help One Another
In the previous disaster, we have heard many people saying,
“Neighbors were the first ones to come and help me before the
arrival of fire-engine or the Self-Defense forces”.
What can you do to start getting to know your neighbors so that you
are better prepared to help others in case of emergency?
Before the earthquake strikes...
You can start getting to know your neighbors by participating in disaster preparation drills or
local events. Greetings or following the rules of your community can be a great start to building
positive relationship with your neighbors.

When the earthquake strikes...
If you see someone injuired or trapped under a structurally damaged or
collapsed building,cooperate with others around you to help.
Depending on the areas in which you live,
the local fire department probably holds classes on
CardioPulmonary Resusciation (CPR) or Automated External Defibrillator (AED).

time after a disaster. Local schools or gathering places are usually used as
emergency shelters.

Who can stay at the emergency shelter?
How can I find an emergency shelter in my area?
Usually, each locality has their map where you may be able to find the name/address of your nearest
emergency shelter and evacuation area.
Evacuation Area　⇒ A place to evacuate when a large-scale fire occurs.

Q1 What should I do if my visa expires while I am evacuating?
A 1 If you live in the afflicted area and have completed the foreign resident
registration, you might be given a special visa permit. Ask immigration office how
and by when you should apply for the permission.

A 3 Local evacuation centers usually create ad-hoc first-aid centers. At this place, you
do not need any money or health insurance card to see a doctor. Visit the center

circumstances). However, due to the shortage of electricity, a rolling blackout

In order to be eligible to receive various financial aids,
you will need a Disaster Victim Certificate (Risai Shomeisho).
The Disaster Victim Certificate is issued by Municipalities.
