However nonmembers are also welcome to submit a paper. 2． Categories of Articles The following 7 publication categories are available: (1) Research Papers, (2) Rapid Communications, (3) Short Papers, (4) Integrated Papers, (5) Accounts, (6) Review Papers, (7) Technical Reports, (8) Reference Data, and (9) TANSO News. Articles should deal with research in the field of carbon materials. 2.1 Research Papers Research Papers should describe original work with important new results. Research Papers are limited to six journal pages. 2.2 Rapid Communications Rapid Communications are intended for rapid publication of novel and significant work, and limited to two journal pages. Rapid Communications are reviewed expeditiously, and, if accepted, will be published in the issue of TANSO following the date of the receipt of the manuscript. However, when the date of the receipt of a manuscript is close to the publication date of the next issue, it may be published in the following issue. 2.3 Short Papers Short Papers are short scientific reports containing new and valuable facts or results even if they are fragmentary. Short Papers are limited to three journal pages. 2.4 Integrated Papers Integrated Papers should be arranged to briefly combine several research papers that have been already published by, at least, one of the submitting authors, and should contain original aspects and discussions. Integrated Papers are limited to ten journal pages. 2.5 Accounts Accounts should give an extensive account of an important research topic of current interest including work of other researchers to give a bird s-eye view of the field with a clear perspective of the authors. Accounts are limited to ten journal pages. 3． Processing of Publications All manuscripts should be submitted by the MS-Word or the PDF file. When accepted, final manuscripts should be sent by the MSWord file. The files of the manuscripts should be sent to the following E-mail address. If it is difficult to send the files with E-mail （e.g., the file is over 10 MB）, authors are able to send the files in a CD to the following address of the Editorial board. It can also request authors to revise their manuscripts. 3.1 The received date is the date when a manuscript arrives at the office of The Carbon Society of Japan. The date of acceptance is the date when the Editorial Board decides to accept a manuscript for publication. 3.2 The Editorial Board will pass manuscripts to a referee for comments, based on which the Board will decide whether or not to accept the manuscript for publication. 3.3 When a revision is requested, authors must return the revised manuscript within three months. 3.4 Review Papers should plainly give an expository (explanatory) description on a specific issue. Review Papers are limited to ten journal pages. The right to permit printing or publishing the articles appeared in TANSO , the Journal of the Carbon Society of Japan, and citing or reproducing figures and tables thereof, as well as the public transmission right for publication on the internet, etc. come under the jurisdiction of the Carbon Society of Japan. The right to license databasing, secondary use and electric/optical copying of the articles (including Abstracts in English) is entrusted to the Carbon Society of Japan. The royalties thereof belong to the Carbon Society of Japan. Technical Reports contain new technical insights into the research of carbon materials. They report, for example, on the synthesis, preparation and production of carbon materials, and on the design, testing and operation of carbon-related apparatus or plants. Technical Reports are limited to three journal pages. The articles of Research Papers, Short Papers, Integrated Papers, Accounts, Review Papers, and Technical Reports appeared in TANSO are also available on the web site in a period of time after the publishing. The Rapid Communications are available soon after the publishing. Reference Data give referential information on research and technology, and reports of survey and statistics in the field of carbon materials. Reference Data are limited to four journal pages. 4． Manuscript Requirements Manuscripts should be prepared in accordance with the following requirements. 2.6 Review Papers 2.7 Technical Reports 2.8 Reference Data 2.9 TANSO News TANSO News includes correspondence to the editorial board, general news on carbon, etc., and are mostly limited to one journal page. 3.5 (Typescript) 4.1 Manuscripts should be prepared by using the MS-Word. Authors should look at the style of the most recent issue of the Journal. Typscripts is times new Romam. Each paragraph should begin after 5 221 炭 素 Notice to Authors for Preparation of English Manuscripts for “TANSO” spaces, and hyphenation at the end of lines should be avoided. 4.16 The title of the paper and the names of the authors should be written on the first page. Affiliation(s) and address(es) of authors are written at the bottom of the first page of manuscripts using a footnote. The corresponding author should be identified with symbol (*) and footnote, including E-mail address. Authors should consult a recent issue of the journal for style if possible. 4.17 4.2 4.3 The title should be concise but informative enough to facilitate information retrieval. 4.4 An abstract should be prepared for each category of manuscripts except TANSO News. The abstract should not exceed 200 words for Research Papers, Integrated Papers and Review Papers, and 100 words for Rapid Communications, Short Papers, Technical Reports, Reference Data. Authors should list a maximum of five key words. Each keyword would be preferably selected out of the Keywords from Table 1 in a page for preparation of the manuscript for Tanso. 4.5 Sections should be given Arabic numbers with subsections numbered using the decimal system, e.g., 1., 2., 1.1, 1.2, 1.1.1, 1.1.2, ···. 4.6 A printed page corresponds to approximately 1000 words without tables and figures. A double-spaced A4 manuscript page corresponds to approximately 300-400 words. 4.7 All pages of the manuscript should be numbered consecutively. 4.8 Authors should clearly indicate any special characters used. 4.9 SI units should be used as much as possible. 4.10 Abbreviations or acronyms may be used in the text without definition when the meaning is clear. It is advisable, however, to define them the first time they appear. EXAMPLES 1) heat treatment temperature (HTT) 2) scanning electron microscope (SEM) (Tables and Figures) 4.11 Tables and Figures should not be included in the text, but should on the separate pages. 4.12 Tables and Figures should be numbered in their order of appearance in the text (e.g., Table 1 and Fig. 1). 4.13 Self-explanatory table titles and figure captions (including photographs) should be given. 4.14 A list of figure captions should be provided on a separate page. 4.15 Figures will be reproduced within the width of one (8.5 cm) or two columns (17.5 cm) and a maximum height of 25 cm. Six figures of 8×7 cm correspond to one journal page. 222 Figures can only be reproduced in color at the author s expense. To reproduce the materials of Tables and Figures published, it is the obligation of the author to secure permission from the publisher before the submission. The fact that such permission has been granted should be appropriately shown in the captions of Tables and Figures.
