アメリカの作家たちを助言・代理をするNPOの
新事務局のプロジェクトである。場所はマンハ
ッタンの中央部にあり、高密度に建物が隣接す
る地域にある。その歴史と品格を表現しなけれ
ばならない一方で、利潤を求めない組織である
ことを示す仕様が求められた。また、限られた
外光しか得られない悪条件の下、光を内部深く
まで導くことが課題となった。
窓側にはスタッフのブースや会議室が並べら
れ、長時間留まって行う仕事に外光が最大に利
用されるようにした。ブースのパーティション
壁の上部はオープンになっていて、中心部分に
もできるだけ光が到達するようになっている。
必要に応じてガラスがはめ込まれて、プライバ
シーが保れている。
これらのブースに取り囲まれた、光から遠い中
心の部分は現業的な作業と資料保存のための空
間に当てられた。ファイルやキャビネットネッ
トがこの部分を囲むように集められ、大量の書
類にオープンにアクセスできるようになってい
る。事務局の大きな柱である作家の援助と書類
管理の機能が、明るい黄色のオブジェクトの中
に纏められ、事務局の心臓になっていることが
表現されている。またスタインベックなどの歴
史的な作家による初版本や肖像写真がこの壁に
架けられ、アメリカ作家連盟を展示する役も果
たすことになっている。
The Authors Guild is a not for profit organization that represents and
advises American authors. Their new
home must represent the dignified
character of the Guild yet acknowledge their practical not for profit
organization.
Their new office space is located in a
dense area of midtown Manhattan,
with restricted views and limited light.
To take advantage of the available
light, the open work stations and
private offices where concentrated
continuous work is done are located
adjacent to the windows. The top of
the partitions are left open, or glazed
where privacy is required, to allow
as much daylight as possible to penetrate into the interior of the space.
Surrounded by these offices, the
central area is devoted to the storage of data and work rooms which
represent the two aspects of the
Authors Guild, the maintenance of
legal and contractual documents
and the support of the work of the
member authors. This central core is
enclosed in walls of bright colored
concrete board, file cabinets and
a display wall which form the heart
of the space. The display wall will be
used to exhibit photos and works of
the founding Authors such as Teddy
Roosevelt and Pearl S. Buck.
To keep the ceiling plane simple and
high, light fixtures are concealed
at the top of the partitions lighting
upwards. The ceiling plane acts as
a light reflector. The light from below
is diffused, providing an even source
of light throughout the space, created a lighting condition similar to
daylight.
The Authors Guild’s interest in reincorporating elements of their existing
office allowed us to develop with
them a palette of reused and sustainable materials.
空間をシンプルに保ち、天井を高く見せるた
め、照明器具は一切天井面につけず、ブースの
パーティションや中心の黄色いコア部分の上端
に仕込まれている。光は天井で反射し、その拡
散光によって空間全体が照明されている。その
結果、外光の下に似た環境が作られている。
私たちは連盟と共に、このプロジェクトで建設
素材の再利用を進める仕事を楽しんだ。
