「Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig（ラーンサハク・ナ・ガーリック）2016 年レポート」
Rannsachadh na Gàidhlig（ゲール語文化研究）はゲールの文学及び言語、ゲールタハク
の歴史などさまざまな分野の研究を発表する場として二年に一度のペースでスコットラ
ンド及びカナダの大学で開催されてきている。2000 年アバディーン大学に初めて開催さ
れ、2002 年エディンバラ大学、2004 年グラスゴー大学、2006 年スカイ島のソール・モー
ル・オースティクとスコットランドの大学をまわり、2008 年には大西洋を越えて、カナ
ダ、アンティゴニッシュの聖フランシスザビエル大学で開催された。この順で今は２巡目
であり、今年はスカイ島で開催される。発表のトピックは、言語、言語教育、詩歌、散文、
演劇、メディア、歴史、観光など多岐にわたる。発表言語はゲール語か英語である。スカ
イ島の近辺へのエクスカーションやケイリーもプログラムに含まれる。この研究会議によ
り現在のゲール語文化研究の動向を知ることができる。さらに今回は舞台がゲール語使用
地域であるスカイ島である。美しい自然に囲まれたソール・モールの雰囲気も紹介したい。
Norman James ANGUS
“Developments in the University of the Highlands and Islands”
The University of the Highlands and Islands, which received full university status in 2011, has
been active as an institute of higher education since 2001 and, with its unique collegiate structure
of 13 geographically disperse campuses, serves as the only university based in the Highlands of
Scotland. The University has attracted international attention for several reasons: firstly, for
bringing hi-tech tertiary education to isolated, low-population communities; for its work on
promoting the Gaelic language and Gaelic language-based education, but also for its success in
combining the academic with the vocational. It is also a pioneer within the UK with regard to
part-time students, with 65% of its student body full-time and 35% part-time. With over a
thousand courses now being offered, it is providing variety by taking advantage of its diverse
locations and their particularities. It is also empowering its local communities with specialists that
are trained for specific local needs. In the short space of its existence, its research has also gained
high evaluation, with 69% of research submitted for review achieving the two top grades: that is,
internationally excellent; or world leading. In this presentation, I will make an overview of the
University’s history and achievements, and hope to show how it provides various keys for the
future of tertiary education around the globe.
