News Issue 6 Contact exactEarth: +1 519-622-4445 [email protected] www.exactearth.com EV1 Blows Away the Competition It’s been an incredible year at exactEarth as we welcomed EV-1 to our advanced vessel monitoring satellite constellation, the highest detection performance Automatic Identification System (AIS) satellite ever built. EV-1 recently successfully completed the payload performance testing after launching into orbit in July 2012 and has now gone into full commercial operation in November. The polar-orbiting spacecraft was built under contract for exactEarth by SSTL in the UK and is the fifth deployed satellite in the exactView™ vessel monitoring satellite constellation. COM DEV Canada acted as prime contractor and COM DEV Europe(UK) supplied the advanced AIS transceiver payload for this mission. EV-1 utilizes high-speed S-band and C-band communications to frequently downlink information to a number of ground stations around the world. "We were delighted to announce that EV-1 had passed through the payload performance testing phase with flying colours, exceeding all our expectations in the process”, said Peter Mabson, President of exactEarth. “EV-1 was designed to be the most advanced AIS satellite built to date and during the testing phase it has lived up to that billing as we have witnessed a doubling of detection rates compared to any of our previous satellite AIS sensors. We are excited with the prospect of making these data available to our customers in the very near future and providing a big step forward in maritime vessel detections from space. EV-1 is the product of exactEarth technology and investment – we see this as setting the gold standard for performance which we will continue with planned launches next year of the Canadian M3M satellite and an exactEarth AIS payload on the Spanish PAZ radar satellite”. News 2 SAMSA Upgrades Existing Contract with exactEarth The South African Maritime Safety Authority (SAMSA) recently signed a major agreement with exactEarth Ltd to renew their exactAIS® Data Service through to October 2014. SAMSA has been a leading pioneer in the use of Space based AIS data and has been instrumental in driving improvements to Maritime Safety and Security in Southern Africa. Working with a number of Government departments in the maritime security environment, SAMSA is involved with marine environment protection, national and economic security as well as search and rescue operations through its MRCC - Cape Town. With this agreement, SAMSA will now have access to exactAIS Premium™ data delivering AIS data as one integrated feed allowing for comprehensive and berth-to-berth vessel tracking. Captain Karl Otto, Executive Head of the Centre for Sea Watch and Response in SAMSA, said “The detection level, coverage and reliability afforded by the exactAIS service gives us an invaluable resource in helping to manage the maritime environment around Southern Africa. It gives us visibility into sea areas that we cannot achieve with any other sensor or data source”. exactEarth Joins the OGC This summer, exactEarth received its acceptance as a member of the OGC (The Open Geospatial Consortium). As exactEarth accelerates its technological advancements in the delivery of its Satellite AIS (S-AIS) data, membership in the OGC is an important step towards developing new geospatial solutions to meet a growing and diverse customer need. exactEarth recognize that interoperability can be a bottleneck, hampering the integration of new data sources, such as S-AIS, and slowing acceptance and market expansion. Open standards, championed in the geospatial arena by the OGC, break down these barriers and exactEarth are keen to be actively involved in this area to shape the future direction of geospatial data distribution to ensure its customer needs and market requirements are catered for. “We are seeing a rapid expansion in the use of Satellite AIS data” said Graham Stickler, Senior Director of Global Marketing at exactEarth and a previous OGC Working Group Chair. “As we explore new ways to provide these data to our customers it is clear that interoperability is a key requirement. We believe being involved in the OGC will help us form new partnerships and open new lines of communication with our customers fostering even greater use of our data. We look forward to being an active force in helping to define future standards and methods for use in the Maritime Industry in particular”. exactEarth Receives Funding from the Canadian Government The Honourable Christian Paradis, Minister of Industry, and the Honourable Gary Goodyear, Minister of State for Science and Technology visited the offices of exactEarth to announce an investment from the Digital Technology Adoption Pilot Program (DTAPP), delivered by the National Research Council of Canada’s Industrial Research Assistance Program (NRC-IRAP). exactEarth Ltd. received approximately $50,000 from DTAPP to implement projects that include the adoption of new software tools and information and quality systems. “As an organization that excels in developing and exploiting leading-edge technology, we are extremely grateful for the opportunity to work with DTAPP,” said Peter Mabson, President of exactEarth Ltd. “This project will help us further increase our competitive advantage worldwide.” Pictured from left- Peter Mabson, Minister Paradis and Minister Goodyear News 3 Coming Soon: exactAIS® Web Services Data as a Service (DaaS) exactEarth will soon be rolling out the latest addition to our data services product line: exactAIS® Web Services. The information highway has expanded exponentially in the last decade as the average consumer has placed a significant importance on receiving data as quickly and as easily as possible. In addition there is an increasing need to receive data in a form that can be easily ingested and integrated into disparate operational systems with minimal effort. Recognising this need to break down the interoperability bottlenecks that often hamper data integration especially in the geospatial world and understanding that receiving what you want, when you want it, in an on-demand model is now common place, exactEarth is pleased to announce that a DaaS option will be available early in 2013. exactAIS Web Services provide Open Geospatial Consortium(OGC) compliant Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) to retrieve vessel position, static, voyage, and historical track information. These new services will allow users to: • Immediately consume and display data in any OGC compliant geospatial system • Integrate data with other geospatial datasets dynamically without any custom programming • Receive data on-demand to meet customer specific needs • Embed data within existing workflows and in a machine-tomachine conversation exactAIS® Web Services will deliver exactAIS data to customers in an on-demand manner providing the ability for customers to request and receive data as and when they require it, without the need for complicated data management systems at the client end. By utilising Open Geospatial Consortium (OGC) compliant Web Map Services (WMS) and Web Feature Services (WFS) such data can be easily integrated into existing geospatial platforms and will also be compatible with a machine-to-machine type interfaces allowing for fast, automated methods of access. EV-1 Performance Review The EV-1 satellite has far exceeded expectations and passed through its commissioning testing with flying colours. EV-1 recently successfully completed the payload performance and went into full commercial operation. EV-1 was designed to be the most advanced AIS satellite built to date and during the testing phase it lived up to that billing as it resulted in increased detection rates of up to 15-40% better than any of the previous satellite sensors. The performance has exceeded industry expectations as EV-1 daily detection rates are reaching 45,000 MMSIs (Maritime Mobile Service Identity number) increasing the total exactAIS® global AIS service to approximately 90,000 unique MMSIs a day. Customers have been provided with a big step forward in vessel detections from space to complete their maritime picture. Improvements to Current S-AIS Service with EV-1 24 hour Period – October 30, 2012 There are many more launches planned in the near future including the Canadian M3M satellite and an exactEarth AIS payload on the Spanish PAZ radar satellite both launching in 2013. These will help to ensure that exactEarth continues to provide the most comprehensive and high performance satellite-based AIS service for years to come. Check out our new EV-1 webpage for more information.
