Outline of Graduate School of Commerce,
Waseda University
Waseda University's Graduate Schools are aiming to conduct research and education on advanced and specialized academic theory and applications, and to contribute to the creation and development of culture and the welfare of humankind through profound
research and masterful education.
In accordance with the Waseda Graduate School objectives, the Graduate School of Commerce offers a doctoral program and an
MBA program. The doctoral program is composed of two terms: an initial two-year for the master's program and a subsequent
three-year doctoral program.
The master's program and the doctoral program constitute 'Major in Commerce', which has three courses (and seven seminars):
(1) business management (management, marketing and international business, and finance and insurance), (2) accounting
(accounting), and (3) industry and economics (theory and quantitative analysis, public policy, and history of economics).
Although each course or subject is a stream through the two programs, overall commerce research and education are also
involved.
The doctoral program will develop researchers and professors who can each conduct research activities independently in his/her
field of specialization. These people will have the necessary advanced research capability and rich scholarly knowledge required
as a base for engagement in advanced specialized occupations. Those who have been in the doctoral program for three years or
more and have, after undergoing the required research guidance, passed the doctoral dissertation screening and the final exam,
will receive a doctoral degree (commerce).
The master's program will foster human resources capable of absorbing detailed, broad-perspective, deep scholarly background in
their specialized fields, and possessing the high level capability necessary for research in a specialized field or an advanced
expertise occupation. Those who have been in the master's program for two years or more, have earned 36 credits or more and
have, after undergoing the required research guidance, passed the master's thesis screening and the final exam, will receive a master's degree (commerce).
The MBA program composed of an MBA (business administration) program and an MOT (management of technology) program
so as to serve various business related needs. Those who have been in the business course of the MBA program for two years or
more and have earned 50 credits or more will receive a master of business administration degree (For details, please refer to the
section below).
There are two courses in the MBA program, the full-time course and the evening course. The full-time course curriculum is
aimed at the cultivation of future managers and experts in business administration, and is intended for those with business experience who can pursue full-time study. The evening course is for those with experience in business practice who wish to obtain
advanced expertise in business management while continuing in full time employment. The full-time course can be completed in
English only.
There are two streams in the full-time course, 'strategic management' and 'entrepreneurship management.' The 'strategic manage-
─ 26 ─
ment' stream fosters experts who can draw up and execute management strategy, organization strategy and finance and information strategy. The 'entrepreneurship management' stream will foster in-house entrepreneurs, support personnel, and human
resources capable of leadership in marketing, accounting and finance.
The evening course has a management course which provides mid-career professional education in a curriculum tailored for
those who have three years and more of practical business experience and are continuing in full time employment. In this course
students can organize and reconstruct their own business practice experience and practical knowledge, study advanced specialized knowledge, and master the basics of the systematic research method. In the management course, in addition to the common
core subjects, specialized subjects are provided by means of high expertise seminars on each theme. Furthermore, the schedule is
designed so that students can complete the program solely by attending the evening and Saturday classes.
The MOT program has a 'technology management course' to foster human resources who can design and execute corporate innovation, new product creation, and technology based strategy for new business development. Courses in the MOT program are
mainly offered on Week-day evenings and Saturdays. MOT students can also take courses offered during day.

Major Characteristics
1. Triangle Method
The Triangle Method is WBS's unique research and educational system which strives to find solutions to problems inherent
in society through the interaction of faculty members, students, and members of various organizations outside the university
(domestic and international corporations, central/local governments, international organizaions, research institutes, NPOs,
NGOs, and private citizens).
2. Small Group Lessons
Per course average student number is 15. The lectures are conducted mostly through discussion.
3. Internationalized and Diversified Community
Student's home region and age composition are diversed as WBS is opened widely to the world. The excellent international
students selected from all over the world have gathered since the MBA can be pursued either in Japanese or in English. The
WBS students can join the study abroad program at the world famous universities without postponing the graduation period.

Project Research
Project research aims to elevate problem-solving skills among students by providing them with practical experiences through participation in research projects, which are organized by the WBS faculty members.
The educational activities of project research center on problem-identification and problem-solving skills regarding issues that
are affecting society. This curriculum is organized using the Triangle Method, an educational system that promotes close organic
relationships between the faculty members of the Institute, graduate students and professional experts from business firms and
public organizations.
In the courses of study, WBS Research Center organizes a research project for each of the topics to promote advanced-level joint
research among researchers inside and outside the institute and with business experts. The judging committee of WBS Research
Center and the advisory committee of the university select the research topics from among various projects. These projects
include Contracted Research, Field Research and Joint Research, and are proposed by a wide range of back-up groups from various fields of the society.
With guidance from the faculty, graduate school students will master and cultivate knowledge and professional skills necessary
for academic research, which ultimately will help them complete their MBA degree theses. In addition, students are expected to
improve their problem-identification and problem-solving skills through this scholarly training.
Project research is conducted through seminars as well as research guidance. Fieldwork and internships at corporations or other
organizations are also included in this curriculum.

2010 PROJECT RESEARCH(tentative)
Corporate Strategy and Organization
AIBA,Koji
[Outline]
The purpose of this project research seminar is to analyze and identify successful decision-making processes (integrating
strategy, organization, the internal company system, and corporate culture, etc.) that top managers are using to motivate and
direct their enterprises in the face of various organizational challenges being created by increasing globalization of the world
economy. We will examine specific industries and companies (or corporate groups) to identify how they are grappling with the
challenge of integrating their management and organizational strategies, and attempt to discover new paradigms that may be
coming out of these efforts. Students will be expected not only to understand and identify the issues involved, but also to take
the further step of being proactive in proposing possible solutions and innovations in an attempt to resolve some of the real-life
issues involved. A great amount of emphasis will be placed on the use of direct student interviews with managers at various
companies in Japan. At the same time, students should also expect to master a wide range of secondary source materials written in English.
Strategic Information Management
HIRANO,Masaaki
[Outline]
The aim of this project research seminar is to develop management skills that will allow for the creation and maintenance of
effective management information systems within a foreign cultural environment. With a high level of understanding and
adaptability to foreign cultures, and full awareness of the possibilities and system logic of management information systems,
managers can level the playing field and create a fairer environment for multinational companies to operate in.
─ 30 ─
Research on Venture Finance
HIGASHIDE,Hironori
[Outline]
Currently, entrepreneurial phenomena can be observed all around the world. However, it is difficult to answer the questions
of what the entrepreneurship is and what theories exist to explain the entrepreneurial phenomena, mainly due to its multi-discipline nature. Consequently, there are various areas of study, which you can possibly target at and examine. For this purpose, it
becomes important for you to observe and absorb what are really going on in the real business world. In terms of the management function, for example, finance, strategy, organisational behaviour and marketing are all deemed as possible areas of
study. In the future, "finding what should be known" is likely to become more important. Thus, in this project and your thesis
writing, you should be responsible for finding and conduct what you are willing to do, but on the basis of your responsibility.
On the other hand, various assistance and arrangements on "how to know" will be provided. Students are required to present
and discuss on what can be researched in the field of entrepreneurship and on research methodology – how to know what you
want to know. This might sound too "academic" in the MBA course, but I believe that some training in these methods is useful
in your future business life and in your thesis writing.
Strategic Marketing and Management
KIMURA,Tatsuya
[Outline]
The objective of this seminar based course is to guide students to find corporations’ marketing problems and expected solutions in the areas of their interest and thereby obtain the ability to respond to the current marketing issues facing modern businesses.
In the first half of the period, students will not only learn basic theories of marketing through lectures and literature but also
have the opportunity to take part in and conduct discussions among the peers, trying to find their own research topics for their
individual thesis. Expected research areas of the project would be one of those such as brand management, new product introduction strategy, marketing organizations, customer relationship marketing, and marketing communications.
Global Marketing Innovation
GROSSBERG,Kenneth Alan
[Outline]
This project research aims to develop in participants :
●a core base of knowledge concerning global marketing innovation in a variety of industries and various regions
●a facility to apply and critique existing models and templates of global marketing and product innovation
●an ability to find and integrate a variety of sources of information (field study, library research, internet, and experiment) in
order to create and substantiate a thesis which focuses on global marketing innovation in a specific industry or company.
─ 31 ─
Research for Corporate Value
NISHIYAMA,Shigeru
[Outline]
The basic purpose of our seminar is to study and do the research in the field of accounting and corporate finance. The
Knowledge of Accounting and corporate finance is very important not only for CFO, controller and finance specialist but also
for CEO and manager in various field.
In the first half year, we do some case studies or read the good text book together or do the group works. Also we invite
some guest speaker to know the real world in the business. In the second year, we will focus on writing the thesis.
Management Science
FUJITA,Seiichi
[Outline]
In business analyses, a method of finding a regularity among variables by observing various business cases exists. This
method is called management science approach. In this seminar, students are recommended to set up their own hypotheses and
prove them by analyzing business facts or data. The study area in the seminar covers decision makings, business models, management and technology, statistics and other topics that most students are interested in. Weekly seminar activities consist of
discussion based on a textbook, simulation game, and field tours (factory visits, museum visits etc)
Study on Human Capital Management and Creativity
SUGIURA,Masakazu
[Outline]
The major themes of this Project Research are Human Capital Management and / or Creativity. We aim to conduct research based
on each participant’s area of experience and interest using a practical approach. As a result, rich ideas and realistic adaptability
will be aimed at. There are three specific approaches or style in this seminar.
The first is “global”. It is the policy of this seminar to approach issues from global perspectives. The management of the seminar
will be also conducted in a global manner. Discussions are made mainly in English, but individual sessions can be available both
in English and Japanese. You may write the graduation thesis in either English or Japanese. Especially, I will try my best to
implement an organic link with the Double MBA Programme with Nanyang Technological University (NTU) in Singapore, i.e.
discussion through distant learning methods and visiting the school when the schedule of each side allows.
The second is “creative”. In this seminar, we will review literature, and discuss theories and experiences in a traditional manner.
At the same time, the management style of this seminar is as “creative” as possible, which is an implementation of the theme. I
believe this style better fits with participants who prefer “green field site.”
The third is “small-class”. Since I am responsible for the Double MBA Programme with NTU, I will frequently visit Singpore,
and sometimes the schedule needs to be flexible. Therefore, I will start this seminar with a relatively small number of participants.
─ 32 ─
Project Research on Global Business Management
HOHGI,Hideo
This project research seminar is intended to study the essentials of managing manufacturing and distribution businesses in the
rapidly changing global business environment.
The students are expected to learn what have contributed to the success or failure of the corporate ventures in foreign markets
by actual corporate cases, in the area of manufacturing and distributing of the products and services.
The student's project research paper topic is flexible, but preferably in the area of manufacturing and marketing of the products
and services with a global business perspective, as the cross-border business alliance, the technology transfer, the mode of
entry and the level of localization and so forth. Both theories and their practical applications should be both addressed.
Japanese Companies Corporate Strategy
SUGIURA,Masakazu / HOHGI,Hideo
[Outline]
(*This course is offered only to the students on the Waseda-NTU Double Degree Programme.)
The Business Study Mission to Japan (hereafter BSM) is an integral part of NTU-Waseda Double MBA Programme. The
objectives of BSM are three-fold, i.e.:
- to expose the students to the cultural, social and business environments especially of Japan, which form the larger international platform of a competitive market place.
- to develop critical thinking, understand new cultural and social environment, gain relevant business and cultural insights, and
develop valuable network with professionals and companies; and;
- to analyze and solve particular business issues by integrating the learning experience with the larger MBA programme as a
whole.
The BSM will be conducted for two weeks in Japan. It is planned that we are going to visit Japanese companies which has
strength in advanced technology in R&D, product development and manufacturing. In 2007 we will visit companies in automobile, electricity, food, pharmaceutical and trading industries in Tokyo and Nagoya. Also lectures related to Management of
Technology will be provided at Waseda Business School. The BSM participants are requested to submit papers utilizing the
case research study.
