Everyone enjoys going to the Portland Japanese Garden! We were so pleased that such a large number of members and their
guests were able to join us for this special event. Diane Durston, The Arlene Schnitzer Curator of Culture, Art, and Education, set the
stage for our featured lecturer by showing many beautiful slides of the garden in the four seasons. She then gave us a wonderful
preview of upcoming PJG events and introduced Prof. Kimiko Gunji who was scheduled to give a lecture the next day. Sadafumi
Uchiyama, Garden Curator, prepared a special lecture and slideshow for us titled “Reflections: History, People & Intentions behind the
PJG.” He traced the amazing 50-year history of PJG, which was originally designed by Prof. Tono in 1962, from the time it was the
site of the old Portland Zoo through various redesigns and up to the current expansion plan. Through the efforts of 8 different
gardeners from Japan prior to Sada and a host of other gardeners and volunteers the garden has stayed quite true to its original
design.
Sada started with the Tea Garden (Kashin Tei) and pointed out the existence of roji, tsukubai stone, and stepping stones. The gate
can be considered the border between the future and the present, therefore visiting the Tea Garden is like “a journey in space and
time.” Next, near the Zig Zag Bridge where beautiful iris bloom, he showed the current “Heavenly Waterfall.” The prior one was
destroyed in an ice storm in 1997. He explained how it was reconstructed in the amazingly short time of 43 days with the use of a
state-of-the-art “Spider Crane” while the garden was still open to visitors. Sada went on to describe the rest of the gardens:
“Natural Garden (Zoki No Niwa)” which you are supposed to just enjoy in its natural state, “Sand Stone Garden (Kare Sansui)” where
Prof. Tono chose only one perfect stone from a selection of 15 large rocks, and “Flat Garden” in front of the Pavilion which is a beautiful
site of moon viewing (o-tsukimi) in September.
The garden is strong and resilient, but it is still vulnerable to the intentions of humans. Trees, plants and rocks cannot move from
where they were placed, so constant care and pruning are needed to keep the garden healthy and beautiful. Through his
presentation, we understood why PJG is notable for how well it is maintained even in comparison with gardens in Japan. We are all
proud of having such an authentic Japanese garden in Portland.
Following the presentation we enjoyed a delicious bento lunch prepared by Chef Obayashi and wonderful daifuku desserts made by
Ms. Michie Uzunoe. Our member Noriko Saeki brought her Hina Matsuri dolls as decoration. Afterward the sun came out and we
were given the opportunity to take the garden tours individually or with our knowledgeable member guides -- Michiko Kornhauser,
Mary Dickson, Lynn Geis and Setsuko Gluhr. It was a very enjoyable day for all of us.
Please plan to join us for our next fun event. On April 4, 2014 at Bob’s Red Mill we will have a private tour and lunch in the newly
remodeled cafe. Also, on April 18, 2014 we will have a fund-raising auction event. Please see page 6 for more details.

ポートランド日本庭園はポートランドの名所の一つです。その日本庭園で行われた三月の行事には、多くの会員とゲストの方が参加して下さり、あり
がとうございました。講演に先立ち、日本庭園学芸部長のダイアン・ダーストンさんが、美しい庭園の四季をスライドで見せて下さいました。そして日
本庭園での今後の行事のお知らせに続き、翌日に講演されるイリノイ大学名誉教授の郡司紀美子先生を紹介されました。そして庭園キュレーターの内山
貞文さんが、「ポートランド日本庭園 --歴史と回想、貢献した人々と意図」と題して講演して下さいました。庭園の50年の歴史を辿りながら、昔はポー
トランド動物園だった場所に、1962年に戸野琢磨教授によって設計・造園され、以来幾度か改築が加えられ、現在の姿になったこと、そして将来の増設
計画などを説明されました。日本から来られた代々八人の造園家の他、多くの庭師やボランティアの努力で、庭園は戸野教授の構想をほぼそのまま留め
ているとのことです。
庭園内には特徴ある庭がいくつかあり、先ず茶室「華心亭」に付随する露地と蹲踞、飛石について説明されました。門は現在と未来の境界で、門から
露地へ入るのは「時空への旅」と考えられてきたそうです。次は美しい菖蒲の咲く八つ橋を経て見えてくる「天空の滝」のお話でした。元の滝は1997年
の氷雨暴風で破壊され、現在の滝は「スパイダー・クレーン」という最新の重機を使い、わずか43日間で再建されたものです。
「雑木の庭」は自然のまま
を楽しむ庭です。
「枯山水」を作る際には、戸野教授は用意した15の大きな石の中からたった一つ選び、今ある所に置かれたそうです。そしてパビリオン
の前にあるのが「平庭」です。ここから見る中秋の名月はとても美しいです。
庭園は風雪に耐え、また回復する力もありますが、人間の意図にはなお脆弱です。草木や石は自らは動くことはできません。故に常に剪定などの世話
をしないと、庭園を健康で美しく保持することはできません。そう内山さんは締めくくられました。内山さんの講演
を聴いて、ポートランド日本庭園が日本の名庭と比べても遜色のない理由が理解できました。ポートランドにこのよ
うな庭園があるのを誇りに思います。
講演の後は、シェフ尾林さんが調理して下さったお弁当と埋ノ江道枝さんお手製の大福餅を頂きました。
また佐伯法子さんが会場に雛人形を飾って下さいました。昼食後は天気も晴天となり、コーンハウザー
みち子さん、メアリー・ディクソンさん、リン・ガイスさん、グルアー節子さんの案内で、庭園内を散策
し楽しい一日を過ごしました。
4 月の行事はボブズ・レッドミルの工場見学とカフェでのランチです。皆様是非ご参加下さい。また、
4 月 18 日には資金集めのためのバザーを行います。詳しくは６頁をご覧下さい。

プライベートツアー

Bob’s Red Mill Private Tour

Come take a tour with us of Bob’s Red Mill, one of the nation’s
leading producers of healthy, natural foods. Because this is a
private tour we can have our guide focus on specific areas of
interest, such as cooking ideas or the history of the mill.
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during our
visit. Our hour-long private tour will allow us to see the actual
stone grinding mills which make their beautiful whole grain
flour. We will also spend some time learning about the many
diverse grains and how to cook them. This is a window tour,
so no need for special shoes or clothing. There is not a lot of
walking required and they give free samples at the end!
Following the tour we will have lunch (sandwiches on
Bob’s homemade bread) in the newly remodeled eating area
in the Whole Grain Store. This upper balcony (stairs) area is
semi-private and overlooks the busy Whole Grain Store.
During lunch there will be a raffle of items from the Whole
Grain Store. Often after lunch on Fridays, Bob can be found
playing one of the baby grand pianos located in that same loft
eating area. We can’t promise that will happen after our tour
and lunch, but we can hope it might. After lunch we’ll have an
opportunity do some shopping at the Whole Grain Store.
There are pre-packaged goods as well as bulk items which are
very economical. Plus there are many delicious breads and
pastries which can be purchased from the on-site bakery.
Please send in your RSVP early as we need to let the folks at
Bob’s Red Mill know how many people are coming for the
tour/lunch by Mar. 28.

４月は、ヘルシーなナチュラルフードを全米で展開している
大手食品メーカー、ボブズ・レッド・ミルを訪れます。プライ
ベートツアーなので、調理の工夫や同社の歴史など興味深いお
話を聞きながら、気軽に質問できます。ツアー時間は 1 時間で、
同社の全粒粉を製造する石臼製粉機を見学し、様々な穀類やそ
の調理方法についても学びます。工場は窓越しに見学するため、
特別な履物や服は不要です。また、歩く距離もそれほどなく、
ツアーの最後には無料サンプルももらえます。
ツアー後は、ホール・グレイン・ストアのバルコニーで階下
の賑いを見下ろしながら（ボブズのホームメイドのパンを使っ
たサンドイッチの）昼食をいただきます。ボブズ・レッド・ミ
ルの賞品が当たる Raffle も予定しています。 金曜のランチタ
イムが終わる頃には、オーナーのボブさんがグランドピアノを
弾く姿がよく見られるそうで、運がよければ私達もお目にかか
れるかもしれません。 ランチの後はホール・グレイン・スト
アでショッピングを楽しみます。店舗内にはベイカリーもあり、
おいしいパン類を各種販売しています。

From West Portland, follow the directions to the Ross Island Bridge.
Cross the bridge and merge right/south via the ramp to Milwaukie/ Oregon City.
Continue to follow OR-99E/ McLoughlin Blvd for approximately 4 miles.
Exit onto OR-224 E/ Milwaukie Expressway toward Clackamas/ Estacada, traveling east for about 3.5 miles.
You will pass by the backside of the big red Whole Grain Store building. Keep going another mile. Turn left at the
light onto SE Pheasant Ct. You may park anywhere you can find a spot, behind the employee fence is OK.
Directions for lunch: (from the tour to the Whole Grain Store and Café):

From the tour parking area turn right onto Highway 224. Travel one mile, you will pass the backside of the big red

４月１８日（金）皆様からの寄付によるオークション
Tomodachi-kai will have its first fund raising event. Part of the proceeds will be used for the May 10 th bus trip
and similar future events. We can accept any items you wish to donate (See below). This will be a wonderful
opportunity to help Tomodachi-kai as well as downsizing your belongings. We have already received some items
such as a wedding kimono, Coach purses, and Japanese dolls. Upon request, we can issue a tax deductible letter
from JASO. Guests are welcome. Your participation as either a seller or buyer will benefit Tomodachi-kai!
This will be a fun and informal event and we hope many people can participate.
ともだち会では、皆さんからの寄付の品を集めて、第一回の資金集めのオークションを開催します。 これによって集められた
お金は５月１０日のバス旅行に使われたり、将来の同類のイベントに使われます。すでに、着物、日本人形、Coach のバッグな
どが寄付されております。 そろそろ持ち物をダウンサイズされたい方を含め、売り手でも買い手でもともだち会をサポートす
るのに、いい機会となります。ゲストの方の大歓迎。 リラックスした雰囲気の中で楽しいイベントとなる事を保証します。
DONATION ITEMS:
Any item with a value over $5 whether Japanese or American, antique or
brand new, will be accepted. For example, jewelry and accessories, Imari/bone china, pottery,
glass, paintings, scrolls, woodblock prints, rare books, table cloth, kitchen utensils, vases, tea cups,
hand-made crafts, wine, coffee/tea, rice, and home-made cakes/breads/cookies, etc. are all welcome.
However, we are not accepting used clothes or shoes, TVs, or computers or similar electronics.

Hiroji Obayashi’s Japanese Home Cooking
A series of two cooking classes using seasonal
ingredients are offered. The class sizes are limited and
are on a first-come, first-serve basis. Please sign up

Tomodachi-kai has a very special member who is about to turn 100 years old this year Alice Sumida!
Alice is healthy and still quite active, currently being the president of Hyakudo-kai (an organization
promoting activity until one’s 100th birthday) and attending various functions including Tomodachi-kai’s
events. This is a story about a wonderful woman who has lived a resilient and inspirational life, going
through many challenges and happiness.
Alice was born in Oso Flaco, CA, on July 19, 1914. Three days after she met Mark (an issei) who was 10
years older than her, they were engaged in San Francisco and moved to Seattle. Mark had a business
selling seeds to farmers all over the West Coast. In her late 20’s, World War II started. All the Japanese
had to evacuate in two weeks carrying only a suitcase in each hand. She recalls that one of the scariest
moments was when an FBI agent came to interview her husband. Until internment camps were built, they
had to live in the assembly center (today’s Expo Center) where horses and cows lived. The smell was bad
and people were getting sick. Her husband’s mom who owned an apartment rented out her place through
an attorney, but when they came back they found 5 families were living in her apartment and all of their
belongings/furniture/appliances had been taken away!
Alice and her husband took a chance when a group of white American farmers came to the assembly center
looking for volunteer workers, as they said whoever worked for them wouldn’t have to go to the internment
camp. There were 20 young men and Alice was the only woman. They were taken to Eastern Oregon and
worked for two weeks in 110-degree weather thinning sugar beet plants. It was hard work causing
backache and sometimes involved a surprise encounter with a snake. When the job was done, the
government agent told them they could go wherever they liked within the county. They found an old farm
house to live in. Soon the farmers they used to work for who were pleased with their hard work offered to
buy the farm land. One bank in Idaho whose owner was of German descent loaned them money. Still the
land they leased was not a nice piece of land, full of rocks and hills. With their hard work removing rocks
and some neighbors’ invention of irrigation system, they started having beautiful crops -- potatoes and
onions. However, markets were saturated with onions and they had to dump them along the river.
Another challenge! Mark thought and thought, and after a lot of research came up with the idea of
growing gladioli bulbs as a business. After sending the samples all over the country, they were flooded with
orders even as far away as Florida. It took them 5 years to supply all the orders! Alice still remembers all
the names of white, red, pink, lavender, and yellow gladioli. They became the largest gladioli bulb growers
in the U.S. Finally, their success came!
They wanted to pass their business on to their nephew but he didn’t want it, so they sold their business.
After moving to California, her husband thought of starting a Japanese carp (koi) business. They bought
the oya (parent) koi from Niigata, Japan where the best nishiki-koi were raised. In Woodburn, they found
an ideal property, with 13 ponds already built using well water. Workers from Niigata came to raise koi.
Unfortunately, after the tenth year, her husband passed away from illness. Alice had to sell as much as she
could to support him and says this was the toughest time in her life to overcome. She said helping her
husband’s bulb business and koi business to grow was the biggest accomplishment in her life.
After moving to Portland, Oregon, she started what she really enjoys – dancing. She took ballroom
dancing lessons at the age of 88!
Her advice to all of us is as follows:
“Be patient. Accept whatever comes to your life, happy or sad, and make the best
you can from every circumstance. Then enjoy every day as it comes!”

ともだち会には、もうすぐ 100 歳になられる大変すばらしいメンバーがいらっしゃいます。それはアリス・
スミダさんです。
今もとてもお元気なアリスさんは、
『百働会』（100 歳まで活動的であることを促進する会）の会長として活
躍されているほか、ともだち会のイベントも含め、様々な活動に積極的に参加されています。これまで長い間
人生の苦楽を経て、しなやかに生きてこられたアリスさんは多くの人々に元気を与えてくださいます。このす
ばらしい女性がどのような人生を送ってこられたのか、直接彼女からお話を伺いました。
アリスさんは 1914 年 7 月 19 日にカリフォルニア州オソ・フラコで生まれました。成人してから、10 歳年上のマークさん（一世）と出会っ
て三日後にサンフランシスコで婚約し、シアトルに移住。マークさんは西海岸一帯で農家に種を販売する仕事をしていました。
20 歳後半
の頃に第二次世界大戦が始まり、日本人は全員、2 週間の猶予を与えられて家を出なくてはならず、持って行くことを許されたのはスーツケー
ス 2 つだけでした。一番こわかった思い出の一つは、FBI の捜査員がご主人を尋問しに来たときです。収容所ができるまで、日本人は集合セン
ター（現在のエクスポセンター）に集められました。そこは牛馬が飼われていた所で悪臭がひどく、病気になる人たちもいました。ご主人のお
母さんはアパートを所有し、弁護士を通して貸していましたが、戦後戻ってみると 5 家族が住んでいて、家財道具一切がなくなっていたそうで
す。
白人の農家のグループが集合センターにやってきてボランティア労働者を募ったとき、アリスさんとご主人はそのチャンスに賭けることにし
ました。ボランティアとして働けば収容所に入らなくてすむと言われたためです。20 人の若い男性とアリスさんがそれに応じ、女性はアリスさ
んだけでした。連れていかれた所はオレゴン東部で、摂氏 43 度という酷暑のなか、2 週間、砂糖大根の間引きをして働き続けました。重労働
のため腰痛に悩まされ、時には蛇が突然出てきてびっくりすることもありました。過酷な労働が終わると、政府の役人が来て、郡内であればど
こに行ってもよいと言われ、アリスさんたちは古い農家を見つけてそこに住むことにしました。すると、アリスさんたちの働きぶりに感心した
農家の人たちから農地を売ってもよいともちかけられ、アイダホ州にあるドイツ系の銀行がお金を貸してくれたそうです。農地はでこぼこで石
だらけでしたが、一生懸命働いて石を取り除き、隣人が灌漑システムを発明したおかげで、じゃがいもや玉ねぎなどがたくさん収穫できるよう
になりました。
しかし、また新たな試練が訪れました。当時は市場に玉ねぎが溢れて価格が暴落し、多くを川に捨てなくてはならなかったのです。マークさ
んは考え抜いた結果、グラジオラスの球根を育てることにしました。そして全国にサンプルを送ったところ大評判で、なんと遠くはフロリダ州
からも注文が届いたそうです。すべての注文に応じるのには 5 年かかりました。アリスさんは今も、白、赤、ピンク、紫、黄色のグラジオラス
の名前を全て覚えています。アリスさんたちはついに成功を手にして、全米一のグラジオラス球根栽培者となりました。
その後事業を甥御さんに引き継いでもらおうとしましたが実現しなかったため、売却してカリフォルニア州に移住し、今度は錦鯉の商売を始
めました。そしてウッドバーンに、井戸水を水源とする池が 13 個ある理想的な物件を見つけました。親鯉は日本最高の錦鯉の生産地である新
潟から仕入れ、新潟から直接、作業員がやってきて鯉の飼育を行いました。しかし 10 年目には不幸にもご主人が病気で亡くなられました。売
れるものはすべて売ってご主人を支えられたこの頃が一番大変な時期だったそうです。アリスさんは、ご主人の、球根栽培と錦鯉のビジネスを
手伝って成功させたことを、ご自身の人生最大の功績と誇りに思っておられます。ポートランドに引っ越してからは、一番好きなダンスを始め
ました。なんと８８歳で社交ダンスを始められたのだそうです。
最後に、アリスさんから私達へのアドバイスは、
「我慢強くありなさい。楽しいことであれ悲しいこ
とであれ、人生で何が起こってもそれを受けとめ、与えられた状況の中でベストを尽くすこと、そし
て毎日を楽しむこと。」ということでした。

ago. Eiko (Ako) Oishi introduced her to Tomodachi-kai and she is already having a lot of fun with the Chorus
group. ご主人のお仕事の関係で台湾、北京、上海、アリゾナに住まれた後、2 年半前にオレゴンに引っ越して来られ、大石映子さん
の紹介で入会されました。既にコーラス・グループに参加されています。

Chie has lived in Oregon for 2 1⁄2 years. Harumi Marshall and Sachiko Davis introduced her to Tomodachi-kai.
She loves to cook and make sweets. She exercises regularly doing yoga and zumba. After living in the US, she
has become more interested in Japanese culture, particularly ikebana and kimono.
オレゴンに住んで 2 年半の智恵さんは、マーシャル 春美さんとデイヴィス サチコさんの紹介で入会されました。料理とお菓子作り
が大好きで、ヨガやズンバなど毎日運動されています。アメリカに住んでから生花や着物など日本文化への興味が増したそうです。
