Greetings From Your Tomodachi-kai Co-Chairs
What a wonderful way to start the new year! We were so pleased that such a large number of members and their
guests were able to join us for this special event. Several members went all out decorating the penthouse of Holladay
Park Plaza with many personal New Year items such as Lynn’s zodiac Hariko, clay horse and e-ma brought back from
Ise Jingu by Reiko, scrolls and woodblock prints, Takako’s miniature sake barrels and antique Hyakunin-Isshu game
box, celebrating the Year of the Horse. It really looked very festive. A Beautiful ikebana display created by Michiko
Kornhauser symbolized a ship sailing into the coming year. She also prepared a calligraphy of a galloping horse.
Reverend Gibbs from Oregon Buddhist Temple, to wish us all a New Year blessing, chanted Sutra while those who
wished to, offered incense at the o-butsudan.
Consul General Furusawa opened the main part of the event with his New Year greeting and introduction of his longtime friend and noted Japan scholar, Mr. Peter Grilli from Boston, who spoke to us about his experience at the Shikinen
Sengu ceremony of Ise Shrine which took place in October of 2013.
Mr. Grilli who opened up his presentation with a joke about Buddhist chanting in
front of Ise Shrine slide picture, immediately received everyone’s favorable
attention. Only selected special guests were invited to attend this rare and unique
ritual of moving sacred treasures and sacred spirits from the old shrine to the newly
built shrine. He described walking to the ceremony along the swept gravel path
and waiting in complete silence for the ceremony to begin, and sitting in the
increasing darkness as the ritual continued through many hours. He commented
that at the end of the ceremony a soft cool breeze drifted over the participants and
it really felt like the “breath of the gods” (kamikaze).

He spoke of the carpenters who worked to build the new shrine. Because of the
20-year cycle, many are just beginning to work in their craft when they first start, when they return in the next 20
years they have become more experienced, and a very few return again 20 years after that as masters. That is how
their skills are passed from generation to generation.
Mr. Grilli showed us many interesting slides including a great
aerial slide of the old and new shrine standing side by side, as well as pictures of the carpenters in traditional robes,
and the many priests from all over Japan who participate in the ritual of moving the sacred objects from the old shrine
to the new shrine. We were also treated to a video of “Charles Kuralt On the Road at the Ise Shrine” made in 1993,
which explained more details of this unique custom.
Following the presentation we had many questions such as what happened to the wood from the old shrine (it is cut
into small pieces and given to other shrines and also as mementos to visitors) and is everything made using the same
type of tools and plans as the original shrine (yes, thus what was old becomes renewed and the cycle continues).
Afterward everyone enjoyed a delicious potluck of many special New Year treats and other dishes generously provided
by our members. Thanks to our Hospitality people’s help, all the food was arranged neatly on the table and the line
went smoothly. It was truly a very enjoyable day for all of us and the great first event of the year.

多くの会員とゲストの方が参加してくださって、何と素晴らしい年始めのイベントだったことでしょう！
ホラデーパークプラザの会場は、前日から数人のボランティアの方が新年の飾りつけをしてくださって、
午年のお正月らしい雰囲気にあふれていました。 みちこコーンハウザーさん創作の、新年の船出を
象徴した美しい生け花、リン・ガイスさんの張り子のコレクション、磯野玲子の伊勢神宮の絵馬や
五十鈴川の土で作られた馬の置物、貴子プールさんの酒樽と百人一首、また、浮世絵や掛け軸など興味
深い飾りつけでいっぱいでした。
オレゴン仏教会のギブズ牧師の新年を祝うお経の間、中央にセットされた仏壇に希望者が一人ずつお焼香
をすることができ、続いて、総領事古沢氏の新年のご挨拶に移り、この日のゲストスピーカー、ピーター・
グリーリ氏のご紹介をしていただき、日本文化の専門家、グリーリ氏の講演が始まりました。
ユーモアのセンスに富んだ方で、出だしに『神宮のスライドの前で仏教のお祈りを見るのは初めてです。 まさに神仏合体というのでしょ
うか。』とおっしゃられ、会場はいっぺんに笑いで打ち解けた雰囲気になりました。昨年１０月、式年遷宮の最も重要な儀式である『遷宮祭』
に出席されたご経験をさまざまなスライドやビデオを通して、説明してくださいました。神官たちによって既存の内宮から新しい内宮にご神
体が移される間、３０００名の貴賓の方たちは、数時間の間、完全に沈黙を保たねばならなかったそうですが、儀式が終わったあと、一瞬、
柔らかい風が『神風』のように参加者の頬を撫でていき、これはとても神秘的な不思議な体験だったそうです。
二十年に一度、外宮・内宮とも同じ形の社殿を新しく造りかえる式年遷宮の祭事は、今から１３００年前に始まり、社殿だけでなく、神様
のご装束・神宝も新しくされます。 なぜ二十年かという定説はありませんが、人生の一つの区切りということのほか、技術を伝承するため
にも合理的な年数とされています。 大切なことは、最初と同じ形のものが、二十年に一度造りかえられる常に新しくみずみずしい神殿で、
永遠に変わらぬ祭事が執り行われるという、「常若（とこわか）」の思想に意義があるということだそうです。
非常に興味深い素晴らしい講演で、参加者の方からも『新しく造り替えたあと、今までの神宮に使われた木はどうするのか。
（答え： 小さ
く切って、全国の神宮に配られたり、神宮にお参りに来る方にさしあげたりする。）』とか、
『造り替えられる神殿には、どのくらいのヒノキが
使われるのか。 （答え： ２万本くらい。 ご神木は木曾から来るものが多い。）』といった、たくさんの良い質問が寄せられました。講演
の後は、皆さんが持ち寄られた、彩りよいおいしそうなお料理を囲み、お正月らしい楽しいポットラックランチとなりました。 ホスピタリ
ティーの係りの方たちが、上手に手配してくださり、すべてスムーズにいきました。
さて、２月 7 日のイベントは、Bob’s Red Mill の工場見学とランチです。 （詳細は、５ページ参照）

She has lived in Oregon for 15 years. Reiko Isono introduced her to Tomodachi-kai. She enjoys
photography, reading, walking, travel and cooking. She has 2 children, 3 grandchildren and 2 cats. She lived
in Albuquerque NM for 30 years and transferred to Portland. Later she left the company and worked for
TriMet. She retired at the end of October.
由子さんは以前はニューメキシコ州アルバカーキに 30 年間住んでいらっしゃいましたが、今はオレゴン在住 15 年に
なります。磯野玲子さんの紹介で入会されました。趣味は写真撮影、読書、散歩、旅行、料理です。二人のお子さんと 3
人のお孫さんがおられ、猫を 2 匹飼っていらっしゃいます。昨年 10 月末に TriMet を退職されました。

February Event
“Bob’s Red Mill Private Tour”
Date: Feb. 7 (Fri.)
Come take a tour with us of Bob’s Red Mill, one of the nation’s
leading producers of healthy, natural foods. Because this is a
private tour we can have our guide focus on specific areas of
interest, such as cooking ideas or the history of the mill.
There will be plenty of opportunity to ask questions during our
visit. Our hour-long private tour will allow us to see the actual
stone grinding mills which make their beautiful whole grain
flour. We will also spend some time learning about the many
diverse grains and how to cook them. This is a window tour,
so no need for special shoes or clothing. There is not a lot of
walking required and they give free samples at the end!!!
Following the tour we will have lunch (sandwiches on
Bob’s homemade bread) in the newly remodeled eating area
in the Whole Grain Store. This upper balcony (stairs) area is
semi-private and overlooks the busy Whole Grain Store.
During lunch there will be a raffle of items from the Whole
Grain Store. Often after lunch on Fridays, Bob can be found
playing one of the baby grand pianos located in that same loft
eating area. We can’t promise that will happen after our tour
and lunch, but we can hope it might. After lunch we’ll have an
opportunity do some shopping at the Whole Grain Store.
There are pre-packaged goods as well as bulk items which are
very economical. Plus there are many delicious breads and
pastries which can be purchased from the on-site bakery.
Please send in your RSVP early as we need to let the folks at
Bob’s Red Mill know how many people are coming for the
tour/lunch by Jan. 31.

ボブズ・レッド・ミルの
プライベートツアー
２月７日（金）
２月は、ヘルシーなナチュラルフードを全米で展開している
大手食品メーカー、ボブズ・レッド・ミルを訪れます。プライ
ベートツアーなので、調理の工夫や同社の歴史など興味深いお
話を聞きながら、気軽に質問できます。ツアー時間は 1 時間で、
同社の全粒粉を製造する石臼製粉機を見学し、様々な穀類やそ
の調理方法についても学びます。工場は窓越しに見学するため、
特別な履物や服は不要です。また、歩く距離もそれほどなく、
ツアーの最後には無料サンプルももらえます。
ツアー後は、ホール・グレイン・ストアのバルコニーで階下
の賑いを見下ろしながら（ボブズのホームメイドのパンを使っ
たサンドイッチの）昼食をいただきます。ボブズ・レッド・ミ
ルの賞品が当たる Raffle も予定しています。 金曜のランチタ
イムが終わる頃には、オーナーのボブさんがグランドピアノを
弾く姿がよく見られるそうで、運がよければ私達もお目にかか
れるかもしれません。 ランチの後はホール・グレイン・スト
アでショッピングを楽しみます。店舗内にはベイカリーもあり、
おいしいパン類を各種販売しています。

「お伊勢さん」と親しくいわれる三重県の伊勢神宮は、皇室の祖先といわれる天照大御神をおまつりしている日本最大の神社です。 二
十年に一度執り行われる、伊勢神宮の式年遷宮は、２０１３年において六十年に一度の出雲大社の大遷宮と重なり、このような非常に稀
な年は、一生に一度のことなので、東京からのバスツアーで２０１３年の暮れに伊勢神宮を訪れました。 夜１０時に東京を発ち、早朝
５時に伊勢神宮の外宮に到着。まだ暗く荘厳な森の中、玉砂利を踏みながら、鳥居をくぐる前にガイドさんに教わった通り、手水で左手、
右手、口の順に清め、
「二拝二拍手一拝」の神前でのお参りをしました。 参道を歩くのにも規則があり、外宮では左側通行、内宮では右
側通行、真ん中は神様が通る場所と決まっています。外宮は衣食住およびすべての産業の神様（豊受大御神）なので、お参りするときは、
日ごろの感謝をし、ここでは何かお願い事をしてはいけないということでした。 夫婦岩のある二見浦に着くと、日の出と同時に、めっ
たに見れないといわれている富士山が遠くにくっきりと見え、神秘的な絶景でした。
引き続きバスに乗り、天照大御神を奉ってある内宮の入り口にある宇治橋を渡るとそこは聖域の別世界です。
参道の木々を通して斜めに差す朝日を浴びると、まるで心も洗われるよう。 樹齢何百年という杉やヒノキの
幹に触れるとパワーを頂いた気持ちになり、午年の絵馬やお守りなどを買って、参拝のあとは、かって江戸時
代のお伊勢参りの旅人も歩いたおかげ横丁（旧参宮街道）を散策。名物の「伊勢うどん」（柔らかめのうどん
をつけ麺スタイルで食す）や「赤福」を楽しみながら、昔ながらの街並みをのんびりと歩いて帰路につきまし
た。
式年遷宮お伊勢参りの翌年（お加護年、おかげ年）には、いいことがある、といわれています。
２０１４年の 皆様の益々のご健康とお幸せ、および世界平和を 心よりお祈りいたします。
“Kagura den”

Ise Jingu is sometimes called, “O-Ise san” by the Japanese people. It is the largest shrine
in Japan and it houses the sanctuary of Amaterasu Omikami who is considered to be the
ancestor of the Imperial Family. Year 2013 is a a very rare year that Shikinen Sengu of
both Ise Jingu (every 20 years) and Izumo Taisha (every 60 years) take place in the same
year. This happens only once in a lifetime, so we decided to take the bus tour to Ise Jingu
toward the end of December, 2013. We left Tokyo abound 10 PM and arrived at Geku
(Outer shrine) of Ise Jingu at 5 a.m..
It was still dark and we could only hear our steps
on the sanctuary road in the serene forest. Before going through “Torii” entrance, we
purified ourselves with water in the order of our left hand, right hand, and mouth. The
style of praying in front of a shrine is always “bow twice, clap hands twice, and bow once”.

Surprisingly, even where you walk on the sanctuary road is specified. In Geku (Outer
shrine), you walk on the left side, in Naiku (Inner shrine), you walk on the right side, never
the center because that is where “kami-sama (God)” walks.
Geku (Toyouke Omikami) is the kami of agriculture and industry, bestowing food, clothing, and shelter. Here
when you pray, we were told just to thank the kami for what you have been blessed with and not to ask for
your own wish. For over 1300 years without fail twice a day, they offer sacred food to Amaterasu Omikami.
When we arrived at the next stop, “Meoto-iwa of Futami-ga ura” by the ocean, the sunrise had just started and
we could see Mt. Fuji which is said to be seen very few times. It was a gorgeous but mysterious view.
Our main stop was Naiku (Inner shrine), the sanctuary of “Amaterasu Omikami”. Crossing the Uji Bridge
over very clear Isuzu River seemed like we were entering into the sacred world. Feeling the morning sun
coming through the old cypress trees, we felt our entire body was purified and touched some of the cedar and
cypress (hinoki) tree trunks that must be hundreds of years old to receive the sacred energy.
Leaving the shrine, we strolled around the town (O-kage yokocho) where our ancestors in the Edo era stopped
by after their pilgrimage to Ise Shrine. The local specialty, “Ise Udon” and “Akafuku” were delicious.
They say the following year after your visit to Shikinen Sengu year in Ise will be a good year. We were very
grateful we could visit there and wish everyone health and happiness in 2014 as well as world peace.

Directions for the tour
Place: Bob’s Red Mill World Headquarters
13521 SE Pheasant Ct. Milwaukie, OR 97222
From West Portland, follow the directions to the Ross Island Bridge.
Cross the bridge and merge right/south via the ramp to Milwaukie/ Oregon City.
Continue to follow OR-99E/ McLoughlin Blvd for approximately 4 miles.
Exit onto OR-224 E/ Milwaukie Expressway toward Clackamas/ Estacada, traveling east for about 3.5 miles.
You will pass by the backside of the big red Whole Grain Store building. Keep going another mile. Turn left at the
light onto SE Pheasant Ct. You may park anywhere you can find a spot, behind the employee fence is OK.
Directions for lunch: (from the tour to the Whole Grain Store and Café):
Place: Bob’s Red Mill Whole Grain Store and Café 5000 SE International Way, Milwaukie, OR, 97222
From the tour parking area turn right onto Highway 224. Travel one mile, you will pass the backside of the big red
Whole Grain Store building. Turn right at the light on Freeman Way. Go ½ block to the T, turn right on International
Way and proceed 2 blocks to the Whole Grain Store. Park in front of the building.

方面に向かって 3.5 マイルほど東に行き、赤い Whole Grain Store ビルの後ろ側を 1 マイルほど通り過ぎてから SE Pheasant Ct の信号で左に
曲がります。空いている場所に駐車してください。従業員用と書いてあるフェンスの後ろに駐車しても構いません。

です。ビルの正面に駐車してください。
