Dentists and PhD students from different fields of study came to this conference from Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Peking University, Chulalongkorn University and Chung Shan Medical University. The conference covered the current research status of each university, research highlights, ongoing clinical research, basic and translational research, work from the PhD students and a poster session. I gave an oral presentation during the clinical research session. What was especially valuable to me was that we could discuss our research with one another after the presentations as well as explain to one another our methods and skills. Although learning about studies from different fields has been invaluable to my professional development, I regret that I could not discuss my presentation in depth due to the fact that few participants were majoring in oral surgery. Moreover, most presentations were about basic research, and I would have liked to hear about recent clinical topics from each university. I think that discussing both clinical and research aspects generates a more comprehensive picture of the current trends in dentistry. After the conference, the staff of Peking University generously took us on a tour of their hospital. It had extensive facilities not only for clinical but also for research. They also took us sightseeing. We visited Olympic Park and the Great Wall of China. This conference marked the first time that I have visited Beijing, so I had an enriching experience learning about Chinese culture. Finally and most importantly, I would like to thank the professors and the organizing staff from the participating universities for giving us an excellent opportunity to discuss our studies and to network with one another through participating in the Tri-university Consortium Conference. The presentation at international conference was the first time for me. With a great pleasure, I was also happy to have academic communication among researchers, dental clinicians and many graduate students. As indicated at the conference as well as the previous achievements, the “Tri-University” is a leading oral health educational institution in each country. The universities have been playing important roles and pioneering many new initiatives for dental education. Furthermore, they have missions to keep the relationship with academic and professional colleagues in the entire world. I announced at poster session, titled “Role of SUFU and PTCH2 genes in pathogenesis of keratocystic odontogenic tumor (KCOT)”. Our study group demonstrated the possibility that loss of heterozygosity (LOH) at chromosome 1p34 and 10q24 may play significant roles in the development of KCOT. I had a great opportunity to discuss the topics of KCOT and nevoid basal cell carcinoma syndrome (NBCCS) with Dr. Tie-Jun Li (Professor in Oral Pathology, Peking University School of Stomatology, China), who is one of the famous researcher in the field of KCOT. I’m sure that the discussion will be a useful reference for advance. For development of the dental medicine, I hope the environment that works together like the tri-university consortium will be continued through their competition. It was held on the 27th-28th of July 2012 at Beijing Friendship Hotel, Beijing China. This conference is held with the cooperation of 3 universities, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Peking University and Chulalongkorn University. The main aim of this consortium is to improve academic communication and collaboration among young dental researchers, clinicians and students. The consortium started with the opening address from the Dean of Peking University. He gave us a brief introduction of the Peking University and its ongoing research projects. It was interesting to know, how the name of the university (Peking school of Stomatology) came into effect. After that the dean of Faculty of Dentistry, Tokyo Medical and Dental University, Professor Junji Tagami and Professor Wacharaporn Tasachan from Chulalongkorn University, Bangkok, Thailand introduced their respective universities and the current research status related to dentistry. The talks by all the deans gave us an overview of each of the universities and their research related infrastructure. The first day was followed by presentations in the field of clinical, basic and translational research in the field of dentistry by members from all three participating universities. All these presentations were very interesting and helped us gain more information and knowledge about current developments in dental research. The day ended with Poster session and interesting traditional performances by the students of Peking University. I had a poster presentation titled,” Periodontal treatment with topical antibiotics improves glycemic control in association with elevated serum adiponectin in patients with type 2 diabetes mellitus”. There were a few researchers who were interested in my study and gave their valuable suggestions and critical comments about my work. On the second day we had very interesting session by young graduate students. This was followed by a tour of the Peking University. We got a close view of the work system at dental departments in Peking University. After the university tour short visit to the Beijing Olympic park was organized by the host, Peking University. We all thoroughly enjoyed the visit. At the end, I would like to thank Prof. Yuichi Izumi, for giving me this opportunity to attend and experience a great time at Second Tri-University Consortium in Beijing. Also I would like to convey my thanks and appreciation to the organizing committee. Special thanks to wonderful students of the Peking University who helped and guided us throughout our stay at Beijing and made our stay comfortable and truly memorable.
