Shanghai Centre Talk
Message from Fumin
Dear Residents,
レジデントの皆様
After taking a short 3 year break I
have rejoined the Shanghai Centre
management team and it is great to
be back. I have caught up with many
of you who knew me before and I
am busy getting around to meet all of
you who have recently moved in.
新年おめでとうございます。
初めまして、Fumi (フミ)
と申します。どうぞよろしく
お願いします。
Now that that memorable winter is
well behind us you can start to enjoy
some of the many changes that are
unfolding around the Centre. The
motor court is probably the most
significant transformation and is sure to elevate your arrival experience.
Be sure to drop by the newly renovated Element Fresh, the Nanjing
Road window seats on the second floor are my favorite spot.
The Tea Garden, The Lobby Lounge, Jazz Bar & Business Centre will all
have a fresh new look this spring, be sure to check them out.
Some of the upcoming “must do” Spring events around the Centre
include the upcoming Easter Party on March 22, this will be held in the
Atrium. For ice cream lovers, our popular Haagen-Dazs Coffee Corners
will resume on April 27, enjoy complimentary Haagen-Dazs & coffee
and some great chit chat with your neighbors.
Over the next few months I look forward to meeting each and everyone
of you, should you wish to contact me I can be reached at ext. 6759 or at
[email protected].

Cover Story
A
fter Shanghai's long and particularly cold
winter, it's great to once again feel a little
warmth in the air with the arr ival of
spring. Layers of clothing begin to be peeled off,
windows are opened and flowers begin to bloom on
the trees again. After the winter, the idea of getting
out to enjoy the milder temperatures is in many
people's thoughts. Without the up coming Labour
Day May holiday this year, and with people's busy
lives, it's time to dig up ideas for ways to escape
either in body or in mind that don't take up so
much time.
The weekend break has always been a popular
way to get a little rest and recreation without the
hassle of major travel. Over at Great West Travel,
owner Rachel Wang has some ideas for escaping
the madness of Shanghai. Rachel has been giving
advice on holidays in China unofficially since 1991
when the Centre first opened and she was here with
her Project Manager husband, and officially since
1994 when she opened her travel agency in the
Centre. An ever popular location close to Shanghai
that is easily accessible by both car and train is
Hangzhou. A walk around West Lake or a visit
to the tea country, home of the famous Longjing
tea, will soothe many a troubled soul. However,
for something that little bit extra, Rachel suggests
a stay at the Fuchun Resort. Here, whether it's
a round of golf on the award-winning course, or
chilling out with a spa treatment that you are after,
the staff at Great West Travel are able to customdesign a package especially to suit your needs. Even
closer to home is the Taihu golf villa, only an hour's
drive away near Suzhou. For those who want to
experience the picturesque karst mountain scenery
of Guangxi Province, Great West also arranges
packages to HOMA, a resort in Guilin. Only two
hours' flight and you can relax in the 1500 acre
grounds or take one of the classes offered such as
yoga or cooking.
Over at Jade Travel, they also list Hangzhou and
Guilin as great Spring getaways. Other suggestions
include short trips to Moganshan or the canal town
of Zhouzhuang. Jade Travel organises one day trips
to Zhouzhuang in Jiangsu Province, about 30km
from Shanghai. Moganshan is a mountain town in
Zhejiang, around 60 km from Hangzhou, that was
populated by missionaries and a popular retreat from
the heat of the Shanghai summer for the wealthy
in the early 1900's. Here you can wander through
bamboo forests and take coffee at Moganshan Lodge

or stay in five-star luxury at gangster Du Yuesheng's
former villa. For those of us who want to get
started early on their tans, Jade Travel has a threenight, two-day package to Sanya on Hainan Island.
However, many of us may not have the time to
get away for a long weekend break, so a picnic
is an ideal way to relax and enjoy spring. For a
continental twist to your feast, Paul Bakery has a
wide range of pre-packaged sandwiches and salads
as well as their decadent cakes, which are packaged
in chic boxes to take away. As Vice-CEO, Laurence
Levillair says, “Paul food is ideal as most of it can
be eaten with your hands.” Sandwiches form an
Shanghai Centre March|April 3
Finally, if you are really so pressed that even a picnic
is out of the question, then at least take time out to
stop at Häagen Dazs for a sweet treat. Enjoy classic
strawberry which is a great flavour for spring and
for romance, try an aptly named Spring Ecstasy
– a vivid display of colours in a tall glass or relive
childhood with a Banana Split. Watch the world go
by and relish a moment of decadent bliss.

Farmers' Markets on Hold
The Shanghai Centre farmers' markets will
continue to be postponed until the motorcourt
revitalization project is complete. We appreciate
your patience, and plan to bring back all of your
favorite gourmet vendors as soon as the project
is complete!
Ritz-Carlton Salon Discounts
Shanghai Centre residents can enjoy a 10%
discount on hair coloring and facials (MondayThursday), as well as 60-minute massages for the
price of a 45-minute massage (Friday-Sunday).
To be eligible for these offers, please show your
Shanghai Centre ID card when visiting the
Salon.
Sponsor Appreciation
Shanghai Centre would like to thank all of their
Annual Party Sponsors: Trane, Johnson Control,
Nippon,Tong Ji, Fujitec,Yin Nan, and Jian Gong.
We appreciate your generosity!
essential part of a traditional picnic and classics
such as the Savoureux (with French sausage) or
the Sesame-Camembert make great country fare.
Quiches and pizzas are also easily transported and
can be eaten hot or cold. Levillair recommends the
Three Cheese or the Mariage de Saveur quiches.
She also suggests that you don't take any desserts
that will melt or leak. Canele, wonderful French
flans or a fruit tart will give a sweet ending to your
meal. Take them to some of Shanghai's green spaces
and be the envy of all your fellow picnickers.
If you are a stickler for a more formal picnic, over
at City Shop, you can find a decent range of picnic
supplies such as napkins in a range of hues, paper
cups and plates and plastic cutlery. City Shop is also a
good stop if you want to have a more do-it-yourself
picnic with everything from fresh baguettes and cakes
at the in-store bakery to cold cuts and a wide range
of cheeses in the delicatessen area. Olives, crackers
and maybe some dried fruit to eat with the cheese
finish the meal off. You can also pick up wine or
even a bottle of bubbly for an extra special touch.
Need a Good Book?
The new Shanghai Centre Resident Lounge
West (Suite 815 West Tower) is not only available
for group activities, but is also the new home
to the Shanghai Centre book collection. Stop
by the lounge to check out a selection of used
English books. Feel free to borrow any title
that strikes your fancy! If you're looking for
something hot off the press, stop by Chaterhouse
Books on the 2nd floor of the West Retail Plaza
for a comprehensive collection of foreign titles.

Centre Spotlight
Alice Flower
West Retail Plaza 106C
Spring has definitely
sprung at Alice
Flowers,tucked away
on the ground floor
of the West Building
of Shanghai Centre.
Spring blooms
include freesias, which are small and delicate,
and China's national flower, the peony – a
gorgeous explosion of fuchsia petals. Dutch
tulips add a smart dash of colour, while lilies
and roses are perennial best sellers. To fill
your house with fragrance, freesias are ideal,
or for something a bit more quirky, the store
also sells rosemary plants which have a very
strong scent. Not only does rosemary smell
good, but it can also be used in cooking.
It's especially delicious with lamb or in
tomato-based dishes. In order to make your
spring bouquet last longer, the staff at Alice
Flowers recommend burning the bottom of
the stems, putting the stems in hot water, or
using the flower food that they sell in-store.
Pop in and fill your home or office with the
beauty of spring.

Lantern Festival
Shanghai Centre kicked off the Year of the Rat
with the annual Lantern Festival Party! Lion
Dancers and Puppets ‘wowed' the crowd, while
residents got a chance to enjoy traditional treats
made especially for the holiday. The marketing
team would like to again thank Genilda Doria
for her amazing decorations, which created a
perfectly festive atmosphere.
Dumpling Making Class
Residents learned how to make their very own
Yuan Xiao at March's Dumpling Making class.
These traditional dumplings, served during the
annual Lantern Festival, were also modified
into rabbit shapes, making them perfect for
the upcoming Easter holiday. A true cuisine
crossover!
