August 2008 - Finnish Chamber of Commerce in Japan
fccj news ● Bulletin from the Finnish Chamber of Commerce in Japan Finland’s trade balance with Japan positive in 2008? According to the Finnish trade statistics for May 2008, we might experience a historical year in the trade between Finland and Japan. This could be the first year since a very long time (before the Second World War) when Finland can show a surplus in its trade with Japan (albeit only 11 mill. euro), see graph at right. The reason for the turn is that in the first five months of the year, Finland’s export has grown by 9%, but more importantly, its import from Japan has decreased by 21%. The gains in Finland’s export to Japan are mainly from the machinery and metals sectors. The forest industry has struggled and especially timber exports have decreased from 2007. There are however signs that the exports of this sector will pick up later in the year. The surprisingly large decline in Japan’s export to Finland can mainly be attributed to 20-30% less export of electrical machinery, visual equipment (TVs, cameras, etc.) and communication equipment, As we can assume that the demand for these Japanese products (except faxes) have not decreased to such a degree, the decline must be because an increased supply of these products from Japanese manufacturers facilities in Europe. Road vehicles attributed to 35% of Japan’s export to Finland and has increased in the last three years, but we can perhaps expect a decrease here too once the Japanese car makers’ factories in the St’ Petersburg area are up and running. Finnish Education creates interest in Japan The Finnish education system has created almost of a frenzy of interest among the Japanese media and public with a number of TV programs on the subject, request for presentations by Finnish officials and several study tours to Finland by related Japanese organizations. (左の表紙) この本に関するお問合せ(日本語のみ): 学研: http://shop.gakken.co.jp/shop/order/k_ok/ bookdisp.asp?code=1130278500 Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4053027853 Amazon: http://www.amazon.co.jp/dp/4053027853 The Visual Magazine School, published by Wave 2000 - International Children Communication Foundation, has carried a series of three large articles about Finland and Finnish education this year, the latest in the August issue where Sirkku Sakane and Hiroyuki Ikeda of Moomin Bakery and Cafe discussed about Finnish food (pictured right). Now we had daytime temperatures of 13-15 degrees, but fortunately not much rain. When relatives and friends felt sorry for us when it was so chilly, my comment was that once we get back to Tokyo it will be more than warm enough, but I feel sorry for you who have to remain in the cold... Turku archipelago - does not get much more peaceful than this The design shops have something for any taste! “What’s your age?” The Moomins are an instant hit among children. Two Finnish favorites; smoked salmon and fresh strawberries Photos: Tomo & Mieko Bystedt As those of you who read the previous issue of this newsletter, I had in this column some reflections on my coming trip to Finland, going there for the first time in over five years. Now it is done and I though I would share with you some of the impressions I got. First of all, Finland has changed. Most of it for the better, like becoming more international, people are more outgoing and there’s a lot of development going on, especially in Helsinki. But at least a couple of the negative images I had before the trip proved to be correct, most It helps to have a good navigator when notably the level of service you you have been away for a long time... get, and how expensive Finland, and Europe, has become if you need to convert your money from yen to euro. I had given notice of the service level to expect to my fellow travelers, two of whom had never been to Finland (well, the navigator in the above picture perhaps didn’t care...), And I got the first case to prove my point right upon arrival at Helsinki-Vantaa Airport. At the car rental desk (big famous international company, H...), there were three clients and three staff. One of the staff was taking care of one of the clients, but the other two where minding their own business without even giving the other customers a glance, mind telling us “sorry, we are busy right now but please wait a moment”. Well, after 20 minutes it was my turn, and from then on it went smoothly. Except for this incident the service wasn’t all that bad. Of course, in the restaurant you have to wait to be served and your order arrives in 30-40 minutes, but guess that’s about normal everywhere else except in Japan. We get too spoiled here! The cost level was actually worse than I had expected, i.e. more expensive. Partly this is of course due to the exchange rate, but I also have the feeling, shared with most of the locals I talked to, that the introduction of the euro in Finland (which I think was a very good thing in the bigger picture) has made people a bit incapable ティモ・ヴァルハマ of judging prices, and this fact has probably the vendors taken FCCJ会頭(日本フィンパップ株式会社) advantage of, especially when raising prices. When the unit is now euro, the increase is simply one or two euro, whereas during the Finnish markka time you could increase one or two markka, which was about 1/6 of a euro. If you “shop around” you find reasonable accommodation, but food - both in shops and at restaurants - is expensive. In Japan you get a good lunch for less than 1,000 yen, but in Finland it is difficult to get anything decent for less than 13-15 euro, i.e. double of what you pay in Tokyo. Perhaps lack of competition, and perhaps because in Finland the difference in prices for lunch and dinner at a restaurant is rather small. So comparatively a dinner is not that expensive. Also felt that the food quality at restaurants has improved, in most cases, and the hotels had fabulous breakfast buffets. The improvement is partly perhaps due to a large number of ethnic restaurants especially in Helsinki, which has increased competition and improved the taste buds of the customers, who have started to demand better. Some complaints; there’s a fairly new service station chain (name easy as a,b,c...) owned by one of the two major retailers. Apart from having a wacky design and color scheme - which of course is a matter of taste if you like it or not - we had some unpleasant experience with this chain. On the way up to Kokkola from Turku we started to run low on gas and the gas stations are few and far between on that stretch. Finally we thought we where lucky when we saw the high ad-tower for a new outlet of this chain, on it it said “Open 6-24”. After a short detour we drove up to the station to find out that it wasn’t opened yet! The next day my brother drove the same route and did exactly the same mistake! Couldn’t they have covered the adtower until they were actually open, or at least say “will open on....”. Later in our journey we used the same chain’s station near Tampere and some of us wanted to use the bathroom. But, to use it for free it wasn’t enough to refuel, but you had to buy something in their shop, or otherwise pay for the use - stupid service. new members 4F 1-9-2 Tsukiji, Chuo-ku, TOKYO 104-0045 Phone: 03-5148-0571 Fax: 03-5148-0566 Contact: Ms. Hisako Noto, Executive Director Profile: Advertisement, planning and production We do total creative work that considers merchandising, advertising, and sales promotion all-in-one. www.advertise.co.jp MHS Konecranes Co., Ltd.
