Early History
1989年:
欧州共同原子核研究機関 (CERN) において，
Tim Berners-Lee により Web が発明される
1994年10月:
CERN の協力と，アメリカ合衆国国防総省高等研究計画局 (DARPA)，欧州
委員会 (EC) の援助を得て，アメリカ合衆国
マサチューセッツ工科大学計算機科学研究所 (MIT/LCS) に，
Tim Berners-Lee を招き，W3C が設立される
1995年3月:
欧州ホストとして，フランス国立情報処理自動化研究所 (INRIA) が参加 (そ
の後2003年1月1日をもって，同じくフランスに本部を置く
欧州情報処理数学研究コンソーシアム (ERCIM) に移管される)
1996年9月:
アジアホストとして，日本の慶應義塾大学が参加 [略年表(最新版)]

W3C 特許方針と Tim Berners-Lee による見解全文 (報道発表文)
目的:
ロイヤリティフリーに基づき，W3C 勧告の実装を可能にすること
対象者:
特許保持者とそれ以外の全ての人双方を含む，Web の構築や利用に関わ
る全ての関係者
特許保持者の適用範囲:
W3C 勧告の実装に必要不可欠な技術に対し，特許を保持している W3C の
ワーキンググループ参加組織
要求事項:
保持している特許一式全ての放棄を要求しない代わりに，ロイヤリティフリー
に基づく W3C 勧告の実装を対象者全てに認めること
例外処理:
PAG を召集し，該当するワーキンググループに解決案を提示

仕様策定に直接参加でき，Teamへの技術者派遣も可能
様々な会員特典を活用し，技術だけでなく市場での優位実現も可

MIT/LCS, ERCIM, 慶應のいずれかのホストに所属するスタッフ
仕様策定に関わる技術的な作業を主導，監督する多くの専門家

Activity Statement
Introduction
The advent of XML makes it easier for systems in
different environments to exchange information. The
universality of XML makes it a very attractive way to
communicate
information
between
programs.
Programmers can use different operating systems,
programming languages, etc., and have their software
communicate with each other in an interoperable manner.
Moreover, XML, XML namespaces and XML schemas
provide useful mechanisms to deal with structured
extensibility in a distributed environment, especially when
used in combination.
The same way programmatic interfaces have been
available since the early days of the World Wide Web via
HTML forms, programs are now accessible by
exchanging XML data through an interface, e.g. by using
SOAP Version 1.2, the XML-based protocol produced by
the XML Protocol Working Group.
The power of Web services, in addition to their great
interoperability and extensibility thanks to the use of
XML, is that they can then be combined in order to
achieve complex operations. Programs providing simple
services can interact in order to deliver complex addedvalue services.
Role of W3C
W3C works on defining the architecture as well as the
core technologies for Web services.
In September 2000, W3C started the XML Protocol
Activity in order to address the need of an XML-based
protocol for application-to-application messaging.
In January 2002, the Web Services Activity was launched,
subsuming the XML Protocol Activity by extending its
scope to all the different aspects of Web services.
The goal of the Web Services Activity is to design a set of
technologies fitting in the Web architecture in order to
bring the development of Web services to its full
potential. The goal of the Web Services Architecture
Working Group is to identify the building blocks and how
they interact with each other.
Current Situation and Accomplishments
The Web Services Activity is composed of four Working
Groups and a Coordination Group. The duration of the
Web Services Activity is until 31 December 2004.
All the Groups under the Web Services Activity conduct
their technical discussions on public mailing lists, provide
proceedings of their meetings publicly, and have editors'
copies of all their documents available from their home
page.
This document gives succinct descriptions of the work
produced. The Web Services Architecture document gives
a more detailed picture of how all the technologies fit
together.
Web Services Architecture Working Group
The recent rapid development of a lot of new Web
services technologies has raised questions about a
common model for Web services and its integration
within the World Wide Web architecture.
The Web Services Architecture Working Group is
chartered with producing an architecture document
which explains how all the pieces fit together, identifies
the technologies that the Activity needs to design, their
scope and how they relate to each other.
The Working Group was started in January 2002. It is
currently working on the following Working Drafts:
A set of requirements for the Web services architecture;
An architecture document; Web Services Architecture; A
glossary to use across the Web Services Activity; A set of
usage scenarios.
XML Protocol Working Group
In order to interact with a Web service, one needs to
exchange information with it. This information may be of
a complex nature: for example, one may need to transmit
a purchase order with parts encrypted, and then signed to
guarantee its authenticity.
Created in September 2000, the XML Protocol Working
Group is chartered to develop an XML-based messaging
framework, in the form of four deliverables:
ƒ An envelope to encapsulate XML data for transfer in
an interoperable manner that allows for distributed
extensibility, evolvability, as well as intermediaries
like proxies, caches, and gateways.
ƒ In cooperation with the IETF (Internet Engineering
Task Force), an operating system-neutral convention
for the content of the envelope when used for RPC
(Remote Procedure Call) applications.
ƒ A mechanism to serialize data based on XML Schema
datatypes.
ƒ In cooperation with the IETF, a non-exclusive
mechanism layered on HTTP transport.
The messaging framework designed is called SOAP
Version 1.2, the Working Group having based its work on
SOAP 1.1.
The following documents have been published by the
Working Group:
ƒ A set of requirements for the protocol designed: XML
Protocol (XMLP) Requirements.
ƒ An abstract model: XML Protocol Abstract Model.
ƒ A primer: SOAP Version 1.2 Part 0: Primer.
ƒ A specification in two parts:
ƒ SOAP Version 1.2 Part 1: Messaging Framework
ƒ SOAP Version 1.2 Part 2: Adjuncts
along with an IETF Internet Draft documenting the
"application/soap+xml" media type.
ƒ An abstract model for carrying attachments along
with a SOAP message: SOAP Version 1.2

ƒ A set of usage scenarios: XML Protocol Usage
Scenarios.
ƒ A test collection: SOAP Version 1.2 Test Collection.
ƒ An email binding specification.
ƒ A normalization transformation for SOAP

The Working Group released Proposed
Recommendation drafts of the SOAP 1.2 specifications.
Web Services Description Working Group
A Web service sends and receives messages using
particular formats and mechanisms. These formats and
mechanisms need to be described in a way that service
requesters can easily find out how to properly use the
service.
The Web Services Description Working Group was
started in January 2002, and is chartered to design a
language for describing interfaces to Web services and
how to interact with them. The Working Group is basing
its work on the Web Services Description Language
(WSDL) 1.1 specification to produce
Web Services Description Language (WSDL)
Version 1.2.
The Working Group is working on producing the
following deliverables:
ƒ A requirements document.
ƒ Some usage scenarios.
ƒ A specification for a Web Services description
language and its XML schema: Web Services
Description Language (WSDL) 1.2.
ƒ A mapping to RDF of this language.
ƒ Binding descriptions for SOAP Version 1.2 over
HTTP and HTTP GET and POST methods: Web
Services Description Language (WSDL) Version
1.2: Bindings.
ƒ A primer.
ƒ A test suite.
Web Services Choreography Working Group
While WSDL 1.2 describes a single service, it is
interesting to combine simple services to produce
complex results.
The Web Services Choreography Working Group,
started in January 2003, is chartered to design a
language to compose and describe the relationships
between Web services. This composition is known as
choreography of Web services.
The Working Group is working on publishing its first
Working Draft of requirements and a usage scenarios
document and will produce the following deliverables:
ƒ A requirements document, including a description of
the factorization of the choreography space.
ƒ Usage scenarios.
ƒ One of more specifications of choreography
language(s) and its XML Schema.
ƒ A primer.
ƒ A test suite.
Web Services Coordination Group
The role of the Web Services Coordination Working
Group is to ensure coordination between the different
groups of the Web Services Activity, the Semantic Web
Activity which conducts related work, and the rest of
W3C.
The Coordination Group meets every other week to
discuss and address coordination needs.
What the future holds
The Web Services Architecture Working Group is
expected to last 2 years through 2004- 01-31.
The XML Protocol Working Group expects SOAP
version 1.2 to reach Recommendation mid-2003. The
group is chartered through 2003-09-31.
The Web Services Description Working Group is
expected to last 2 years through 2004- 01-31, and to
publish a Last Call Working Draft of WSDL 1.2 mid2003.
The Web Services Choreography Working Group is
expected to last 2 years until 2004- 12-31, and is expected
to have a first Working Draft of a choreography language
mid- 2003.

W3C 組織概要
W3C は、Web 技術の標準化と推進を目的とした、会員制の国際的な産業コンソーシアムです。
アメリカ合衆国マサチューセッツ工科大学計算機科学研究所 (MIT/LCS)、フランスに本部を置く欧州情報処理数学
研究コンソーシアム (ERCIM)、及び日本の慶應義塾大学の三者がホスト組織として共同運営を行っています。
W3C は、技術仕様の勧告 (Recommendation) としての策定のほか、Web に関する情報の提供、技術開発の促進、
新技術のプロトタイプ実装などに取り組んでいます。
W3C の活動
W3C では、ワーキンググループ (WG) が具体的な技術仕様やガイドラインの策定を行います。WG は、主に W3C
会員組織から参加する技術者と W3C の専任スタッフから構成されます。
WG が作成した技術仕様やガイドラインは、会員組織と一般からのレビューに基づいて改善されます。その後、
Web の発案者であり、W3C の技術総括責任者である Tim Berners-Lee の決定により、W3C 勧告となります。
それぞれの WG は以下の 4 つのドメインのいずれかに所属し、様々なトピックを取り扱っています。

2001年11月に開催し、好評を博した W3C 技術カンファレンス W3C Day が今年帰って
きます。W3C Day は Web 技術の国際標準化を推進する World Wide Web Consortium
(W3C) の技術スタッフが自ら W3C の Web 国際標準技術について講演する、他に例を
見ない技術カンファレンスです。
今回は W3C が推進する次の6つの技術 -- Web 基盤技術 XML、電子商取引には不可欠
な Web Services、XML に基づく Web インタラクション、様々なデバイスからのWeb
アクセス、Web アクセシビリティの向上を目指す WAI 技術、計算機処理可能なメタ
データによって構築される次世代 Web 技術 Semantic Web -- について、W3C 技術ス
タッフ陣が直接講演 (同時通訳付) を行います。
今回はまた、Web の発明者であり、2002年 (第18回) 日本国際賞 (計算科学・技術分
野) も受賞した、あの Tim Berners-Lee が自ら Semantic Web について語ります。

4. SFC オープンリサーチフォーラム 2003 開催概要

慶應義塾大学SFC研究所は、2003年11月20日 (木)、21日 (金) の2日間、
湘南藤沢キャンパス (SFC) の研究活動の成果を広く社会に公開し、産官学
連携の更なる発展を図る場として、Open Research Forum (ORF)を開催いた
します。
1996年から毎年秋に湘南藤沢キャンパスで行われておりましたが、今年は
初めて会場を都心に移し、「六本木ヒルズ：森タワー」にて開催されます。
テーマは「天地共生：ユビキタス社会のかたち」。
ORF2003では、以下のような企画を予定しております。
- SFCにおける先端的研究８分野をテーマにしたパネルディスカッション
- 研究者・学生による研究発表（デモンストレーション、展示：62企画）
（セッション形式：23企画）
- Digital Art Awards 2003
- 湘南藤沢学会
- W3C Day Japan 2003 (11月14日(金)に ORF のプレイベントとして、
慶應義塾大学 三田キャンパスにて開催 (上記参照))
