President's Message
Happy New Year!
I wish you all a year of good health and great happiness.
This year I hope to learn more teachings of Nichiren Shonin,
chant Namu Myoho Renge Kyo to pray for peace and good
fortune, and learn the “way of our hearts” within our daily lives.
I also hope the teachings of the Lotus Sutra will be a pillar that
supports us through various tasks in our lives, and that our temple
continues to be a place of gathering where we may learn and
support each other.
In June 2014, the Nichiren Order of North America will
celebrate its 100th Anniversary in Los Angeles. During the past
100 years, numerous reverends had faced many hardships while
propagating. Yet, they overcame these obstacles due to their
great efforts. If you are interested in participating in this
celebration, please contact us by email or telephone.

今年も皆様と共に宗祖日蓮上人の教えを学び、『南無妙法蓮華経』のお題
目唱え、平和と幸福を祈りたいと思います。
私たちの日常生活の中で「心の作法」を知り、法華経の教えを柱として実
践していくことができますよう、またお寺が皆様の「心のよりどころ」となり
ますように、励んで行きたいと思います。
本年もどうぞよろしくお願いいたします。
２０１４年6月に北米日蓮宗開教１００周年記念行事がロスアンジェルスで
行われます。この１００年間には僧侶の方々の幾多の苦難を乗り越えての開
教・布教の苦労、そして壇信徒の教会護持の努力があった事と思います。
この記念すべき行事にご興味のある方は、山本までお問い合わせください。

OBITUARY
Mrs. Hisayo Hori [March 20th, 1920 - December 19th, 2013]
Our longtime member, Mrs. Hori, had passed away peacefully at
home surrounded by family on Thursday, December 19th, at the
age of 93.
お悔やみ
堀 久代さん [大正９年３月２０日∼平成２５年１２月１９日]
長年のメンバーの堀久代さん(93歳)が１２月１９日に家族に見守られ、
安らかに永眠致しました。葬儀は近親者だけで執り行われました。
堀さんのご冥福を心よりお祈り申し上げます。合掌。

Year End Bell Ringing Ritual
Good-Bye to last year, Hello to next year
ゆく年、くる年∼除夜の鐘
On December 31st, 2013, the Toronto Nichiren Buddhist
Temple co-organized the 37th Annual Joya no Kane - Year End
Bell Ringing service, organized by the Toronto Buddhist Church
(Jodo Shinshu), at the Ontario Place.
In Japan, many people gather at Buddhist temples, on New
Year's Eve, for the traditional bell-ringing (Joya no kane) ritual.
It is said that we have 108 evil spirits or desires within us, and we
must ring the temple's bell 108 times in order to chase them
away and purify ourselves for the upcoming year.

１２月３１日、大晦日の午後１１時からオンタリオ・プレースにある鐘付き
堂でトロント本願寺仏教会主催、トロント日蓮仏教会の共催で行われた除夜
会サービスに出席しました。
日本では大晦日の深夜に除夜の鐘を１０８回つきます。
仏教では、１０８の煩悩(人間の欲望)があると言われています。
それらを鐘の音と共に消し去り、新しい年を迎えようと言う儀式です。
