November 2013 - the Buddhist Church of Oakland!
BUSSHIN NOVEMBER 2013 B U D D H I S T C H U R C H O F O A K L A N D BUSSHIN NOVEMBER 2 013 Volume 56 Number 11 Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony in January! By Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge I am pleased to announce that Rev. Kodo Umezu, the Bishop of the Buddhist Churches of America and past minister of the Buddhist Church of Oakland, will be the guest speaker at our Hoonko Service on Sunday, January 12, 2014. It may seem strange that I am writing about this now, but there is a reason: Rev. Umezu will also be conducting a Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony earlier the same day. Kieshiki refers to the ceremonial taking of refuge in the Three Treasures – that is, the Buddha, the Dharma, and the Sangha. One of the interesting things about taking refuge is that it can be done again and again. We may have been reciting it our entire lives at temple. Or, if we didn’t grow up in a temple, we may find ourselves reciting it for the first time. But the Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony is special – here, we explicitly gather to affirm our reverence of the Three Treasures and our commitment to walk the Path of the Buddha-Dharma. Those who take part also receive a Homyo, or Dharma Name (sometimes we also say Buddhist Name). And this is why I am writing about this so early: we need to ask that those who wish to participate in the ceremony please fill out the application form on page 3 and return the form to the church by November 18th. The most important part is where it asks for you Continued on page 2 Message from our President By Linda Minamoto G reetings! Fall is in full swing… the weather is changing as well as the leaves. You can smell it in the air. I am elated to announce that we have a new administrative assistant, Doris Okano (See interview). Doris started on September 13 right in time to prepare the October Busshin. Boy did she get an initiation with that task; the photocopier broke down and the Busshin had to be sent out to be printed. Many of you already know Doris but if you don’t, I’m sure you will enjoy working with her. We will have celebrated Keirokai by the time you are reading this. Congratulations to our new Keirokai members and best wishes to those who are already members. Halloween is coming up which is always a fun occasion. The Jr. YBA continues to scare us with their haunted house. Don’t eat too much candy! Staying true to form, such was the case with the Obon Festival in August. Experiencing the BCO community come together to support and continue this spiritual and cultural tradition of our church is very special and inspiring to me. I wish to extend my sincere thanks to the countless number of individuals, Sangha members and friends of the Sangha, for your help and support. Your commitment and dedication contributed to a successful and fun Obon Festival. Thank you to the Obon chairpersons, because it is with your leadership that we continue to have such an awesome event. While the large number of volunteers does not allow me to recognize each of you individually, I hope you don’t mind if I give a “shout out” to a few folks. I wish to thank those who assisted our dancers dress for the odori; Keiko Allen, Christine Kantor, Patti Hisaoka, Ruby Kuritsubo, Chino Nishimoto, and Kimiko Suzuki. Many thanks to Earl Utsurogi for his generous donation of the hamburger and hot dog buns, not only for Obon but also for the Nikkoland Bazaar. And, we can’t thank Val Otsuka and Tak Otsuka enough for the important roles they play; Val for planning and conducting the Obon practices and Tak for keeping the practices on track and for assisting with refreshments. We extend our gratitude to all those who made our Obon Festival such a special event through their performances, demonstrations, and exhibits, including Madam Suiyo Fujimoto and her students from the Ohara School of Ikebana for the beautiful ikebana arrangements; Madam Soga Fujimoto whose tea ceremony group provided a demonstration of this elegant ceremony; Shirley Muramoto and the students from the Shirley Muramoto Koto Studio for their wonderful koto performance; Eden Aoba Taiko group Kieshiki Affirmation Ceremony in January! Continued from front page to provide a “favorite word or phrase” – I will use this to help decide on the kanji for the name. Think about something you like or something that is important to you in your life. We look forward to seeing those who decide to participate in this long-overdue service – I have want- ed to have a Kieshiki here for a while now, so I am very excited that it is finally happening! Look for more details about the service in upcoming issues of the Busshin. In gassho, Rev. Harry Gyokyo Bridge 2 with their invigorating taiko drum performance; and the San Jose Chidori Band who treated us to their musical performances before and during the odori. I think at times we forget that once the Obon Festival is over, there is still much to do to clean up in the social hall, kitchen, and Issei Kaikan. I wish to extend our deepest appreciation to those who helped with the clean up effort on the Monday and Tuesday following Obon including John Minamoto, Reverend Michael Endo, Karen Hashimoto, Namie Naito, Ruby Kuritsubo, Bobby Ozawa, Linda Minamoto, June Masuyama, Teresa Jackson, Gayle Noguchi, Robert Noguchi, Ron Nomura, Kiyomi Nomura, Gary Tominaga, Anne Tominaga, Val Otsuka, Tak Otsuka, and Kiyoshi Fujio. My apologies if I have unintentionally left someone off the list. Again, many thanks to each and every one of you and thanks for allowing me to be a part of the wonderful BCO community! Do you Dana? The Alameda County Food Barrel awaits your canned goods for the hungry families in our community. Thank you for your contributions year round. Hunger has no season. Thanks to George Kamita, Maya Lawerence, Gary Lawerence, Scott Morgan, Ron Nomura, Tak Otsuka, Jon Takagaki, and Norm Yoshida. 4 A s previously published, Thursday September 19th was movie day for the Momiji kai members and friends. “Farewell to Manzanar,” brought back much mixed emotional memories for those of us who experienced the unpleasantness of having been herded into the concentration camps due to our heritage during World War II. Several members did not experience the camp life as they were either living or caught in Japan at the time and others had evacuated inland. According to Yas Aoki who somehow became involved in the project, the rioting portion of the film was made at Camp Park in Dublin, CA now renamed Alameda County jail. He also stated that most of the filming took place in Alameda and Marin Counties. Comments heard after the showing were that the film was interesting. I believe it was more so for the first time attendees who were unable to experience the so-called camp life. At this time the Momiji kai wishes to extend sincere thanks and appreciation to our Rev, Bridge for his technical expertise, to Fuzy Yoshida for the loan of the film and also for purchasing the refreshments, to Yas Aoki for his input, to Mae Kleven and Mrs. Uota for setting up the refreshments and to everyone else who took the time to attend the showing, we thank you. The year 2013, is fast coming to a close. We are in the process of planning our next event. In the meantime we wish you all a “Happy Halloween”. BUSSHIN NOVEMBER 2013 Dharma School News... By Maya Lawrence H appy Halloween to you all! September slipped away so quickly – and now it is time for Halloween and our Halloween Party! But first, the Dharma School thanks the wonderful parents and friends who organized our Back to School lunch. Donna Castro supervised our great volunteers: Ron Nomura, Gary Lawrence, Tak Otsuka, Jon Minamoto, Daisy Tsujimoto, Martha Castro, Kathy Terusaki, Patty Hisaoka, Jeff Hisaoka, Gary Tominaga, Jon Takagaki and Rev. Bridge. A special thank you to Ron Fujii for donating the wonderful fruit, and to Daisy Tsujimoto who donated the watermelon. Everybody pitched in for the clean up. Thank you, thank you. The Dharma School families cleaned our classrooms and did a fabulous job. No more giant dust bunnies on the stairs. Thank you to the Nomura, Yoshida, Castro, Ikeda, Morgan, Takemoto, Wong, Lee, Kamita, Medina, Liang, Yamamura, Masamori and Cho Families for pitching in. (Please let me know if I inadvertently left someone out.) Thank you to Ron Nomura for fixing the hanging light fixture in one of the classrooms. We want to thank Eric Ikeda (Grant and Madison’s dad) for putting up the white boards in our classrooms. They look very nice – and yeah! – no more chalk dust. Thank you to all the Sangha for their dana at the Bishops’ Memorial Service. Your Osaisen is given to the Buddhist Churches of America’s (BCA) Endowment Fund for the many programs that the BCA sponsors. The Dharma School students have been working on their gift to the Keirokai members. This year we decorated insulated water bottle holders. Each student made their own designs, so all the Keiro members have unique canvas water bottle holders. We want to keep you HYDRATED!! 5 We are continuing our theme of Mindfulness with our classes. Mindfulness is one part of the Eight Fold Noble Path. We hope to provide a tool for our families to handle stress, to breathe, and to feel peace in themselves. The Dharma School excursion this year is a visit to the Exploratorium in San Francisco on October 6. We’ll tell you all about it in the next Busshin. Thank you to the following donors. We appreciate your contributions to the Dharma School Programs. Lianne and Jensen Wong in celebration of Sydney Wong’s birthday Gail Tsujimoto-Cho and Andrew Cho in celebration of Alyssa Cho’s birthday Shig and Namie Naito – In appreciation George and Christine Kamita in celebration of Glenn’s and Garrett’s birthdays Kiyomi Nomura – in celebration of her good luck A special Happy Birthday to Glenn Kamita! He is such a good sport, that even when I called his brother’s name instead of his on Birthday Sunday, and put his brother’s name in the Busshin, he forgave me. Happy birthday to our students born in October: Mia Li, James Toyofuku, Brittany Nakamura, Cameron Owoc. Wishing you all the best! Review by Jeff Hisaoka J eff Hisaoka was intrigued by this title The Evil Person. He found a lot to think about in this seemingly small book. Jeff delivers a summary that is clearly a Shin Buddhist Dharma Talk. Thank you, Jeff. T he Evil Person by Shuichi Maida If Buddhism were a professional wrestling organization, then Shuichi Maida’s 20-essays collection The Evil Person is the ultimate “heel” (pro wrestling’s label for the villain). Maida’s ideas practically annihilate the squeaky-clean “face” (pro wrestling’s label for the hero) called the Golden Chain, whose “think pure and beautiful thoughts, say pure and beautiful words and do pure and beautiful deeds” rhetoric warrants such a punishing smackdown. Unlike the onesided Golden Chain, The Evil Person encourages us to embrace our inner bad guy or “heel.” Maida acknowledges the need to have “genuine trust” so that we may awaken to the Dharma. Nowadays, people are more divided because of what we know and believe, and this gap seems to expand quickly rather than close slowly. Maida argues, “Smartness is a discriminating mind. The smart are interested in distinguishing good from bad. As long as you discriminate like this, you always attempt to choose only good qualities and reject bad qualities” (38). This quote implies that Mr. or Mrs. Smart can do no wrong, so his or her ideas and beliefs are the proper order; therefore, anybody who is not liked by the smart people are simply not tolerated. “Genuine trust,” however, “unconditionally accepts not only a person’s good qualities but also his bad quali- ties,” and “acknowledges that his bad qualities are the source and basis of his good qualities” (37). This is not encouragement to commit bad deeds or think negative thoughts, but rather an encouragement to not feel ashamed about having bad or negative traits. It is the person who is at peace with his or her own futility as a human being who is truly the “evil person.” Shuichi Maida’s essays encourage us to see truthfulness, which happens when we ignore the difference between good and evil. Life may be easier when we determine what is good and what is bad, but it’s not fair to others or ourselves to judge what is right or wrong. It’s only human to not like certain things, but “genuine trust” awakens us to truthfulness; this two-fold awakening is the ultimate goal of Buddhism. SACBC BINGO – September 6, 2013 L ast month, we held the first of two fundraisers, coordinating Friday night BINGO at Southern Alameda County Buddhist Church (SACBC) in Union City. The evening was well-attended (over 200 players) raising $500 for BCO! I’d like to thank the following volunteers for coming out to help: Yo Kawabata, Jean Nakao, Dorothy Yanagi, Shelly Schell, Lu Zhang, Valerie Otsuka, Linda Minamoto, Tak Otsuka, Clare Kaneshige, Gary Kawabata, Ron Nomura, Breda Sampson, Don Kaneshige, Harry Bergland, Jerry Medina, Charlotte Schell and Robert Noguchi. I’d also like to thank those who donated baked goods for the evening’s snack bar: Digger and Agnes Sasaki, Maya Lawrence, Harry Bergland, Jon Takagaki, Pam Kato, Jean Nakazono, Daisy Tsuji7 moto, Ruby Kuritsubo, and Linda Minamoto. Our second and last BINGO fundraiser for 2013 is scheduled for Friday, November 15th from 4:30pm at SACBC. If you’d like to volunteer to help that evening (and/or bake), please contact Robert Noguchi at [email protected] or through the Church office. P.S. Our first BINGO date for next year is Friday, May 2, 2014! BUSSHIN NOVEMBER 2013 Long-Range Vision for Our Church Property A n Ad-Hoc Committee of the Board and interested Sangha members has been formed to pursue discussions on a long-term vision for the Church’s property. An impetus for this effort has been the current community discussions that are occurring as a result of the redevelopment of the Lake Merritt BART Station and the City of Oakland’s Specific Planning process. The focus of those community discussions have been around the development of a Transit-Oriented Development (T.O.D.) in the Chinatown neighborhood. Another factor spurring this effort has been the ongoing concern for maintenance and up-keep for the Apartment Building. The residential structure has failing infrastructure (plumbing, heating, emergency egress, roof) which has required significant investment to keep the building in working order over the past several years. Furthermore, if investments were made in its upgrade it would trigger ADAcompliancy issues. A broad statement for the goal of Visioning a plan for the Church’s property is under development. As a beginning point, this Mission statement is, “to improve the Church’s property to support the Church’s Sangha and the broader communities in which the Church is a part of (e.g. the East Bay JA/Asian American community; the Oakland Chinatown neighborhood community, etc.) through development of facilities that support the multi-generational needs of these communities.” A Wish List of desired facilities might include: • Affordable and market-rate housing to replace the current Apartment Building. We would look to experts to help define an appropriate unit mix within the context of the church community and the neighborhood. • Classroom/meeting rooms to replace and add to the number/ square footage we have currently in the Issei Kaikan. • Gymnasium/Hall (volleyball-basketball) w/ kitchen facilities; toilets as required • Parking (to replace current number PLUS any added requirement from new housing and other uses incorporated into the development.) • Storage space (replacing current storage within the Issei Kaikan building and container storage units w/in the parking lot behind the church; additional storage as can be accommodated.) • Outdoor barbecue area • Garden / Open space / Festival space • New entry/connection with existing Temple building • Possible commercial/retail/office space for affiliated organizations; convenience shopping for residents. The process is still in a very preliminary state. Much has yet to be determined. Among the issues include input and comment by the BCO Community; the feasibility of consolidating parcels on the block; from where and how much might be required to finance development; and the availability and interest of development partners who might share our vision for the property. These are only a few. If you have comments and would like more information about the process, or would like to be actively involved in the process, please contact Steve Terusaki through the Church Office, or by email at: <[email protected]> E Waste T he BCO has joined EWASTE 4 GOOD, a group that collects E WASTE and recycles it! The company then gives the BCO a portion of the proceeds. E WASTE is basically anything electronic that you want to get rid of: TV’s, computers, fax machines, copiers, cell phones, small appliances, speakers, scanners, vacuum cleaners, video games, power tools, stereos. Members of the church can schedule a pick-up by calling 1-800-317-3112 or by going on-line to www.eWaste4good.com. EWASTE4GOOD will pick up from your home for free. Your pickup time may vary a few days, depending on their schedule. In addition to being a fund-raiser for the church, you are also recycling equipment and keeping it out of land-fills. That is good for everybody!! Flyers are available at church. You can also contact Maya Lawrence ([email protected]) if you have questions. 8 BUSSHIN NOVEMBER 2013 Newsroom Silent Auction OBWA by Patti Hisaoka T hank you to the following for their most generous donations: • Yoshisato Family in memory of mother, Evelyn • Mrs. Namie Naito • Jeff & Meri Lane (bidders on the OBWA Silent Auction Baked Goods) Jr. YBA News By Casey Yamamura T he Jr. YBA has begun activities for the 2013-2014 year, and we have certainly hit the ground running.
