Summary:
The theme of “Sustainability and the Environment,” alternately known as “Life of Health
and Sustainability (LOHAS)” is a TSA program held at Portland State University from
September to June. The LOHAS TSA offers Waseda students interested in the general
theme of environmental sustainability the opportunity to take classes and participate in
community service through Portland State University’s nationally renowned
Sustainability curriculum. Environmental Sustainability undergraduate studies at
Portland State University fall under the following departments/schools: University
Studies, Environmental Sciences and Resources, and the School of Urban Studies and
Planning

The LOHAS TSA requires all Waseda students to take a “core” course every term related
to the general theme of Sustainability. The courses are offered through the University
Studies Department and School of Urban & Public Affairs and have regular PSU students

The LOHAS TSA requires all Waseda students to take Academic English. The ESL
curriculum is designed to support the LOHAS coursework and tailored to the specific
needs of the Waseda students.
Waseda students with qualifying TOEFL scores may also take regular PSU electives.
These electives can be selected from the list of “Environmental Sustainability” cluster
courses at PSU or from any discipline of interest. PSU departments normally have
restrictions (pre-requisites, major, class standing, matriculation) on elective courses
related to their major.

Key points about the “Sustainability & the Environment” (or LOHAS) TSA
Program:

All students are required to take our Academic English class. For Winter &
Spring terms, students with a >525 TOEFL don’t have to take the 4-credit
Supplemental Academic English class. An institutional TOEFL is offered once
per term by PSU.
All students, regardless of their TOEFL score, are required to take a “core” course
every term related to the general theme of sustainability. This course will have
regular PSU students enrolled in it.

Students may choose their elective classes from “cluster” courses in PSU’s
nationally recognized sustainability curriculum or from any course offered at PSU
(pending usual departmental or university restrictions).
A Language Exchange (LEX) will be offered twice weekly during term time for
Waseda students to meet PSU students studying Japanese. Students take turns
practicing English and Japanese and it is a fun way to meet PSU students. It is
optional to attend the LEX.
Sustainability Cluster classes:
These classes are related to the “core” courses offered each term. These classes are part
of PSU’s nationally acclaimed “Sustainability” curriculum. We encourage TSA students
to choose at least one of these classes as their PSU Elective during the academic year.

Housing and Meal Plan:
Waseda students have two housing options:

Option #1: Dormitory room (single or double, based on availability) ranging between
$900-$1900 per term. A meal plan is available, but students have kitchens to do their own
cooking or they can eat at local restaurants or on campus. Most furnished rooms on
campus are double-occupancy and students will be paired with a non-Waseda roommate.

Opportunities for Learning Through Experience:
Portland State University is famous for its "Community Based Learning" courses. These
courses are open to TSA students and are an opportunity for them to work on a project
with Americans that benefits a local community non-profit. The Waseda Oregon Office
helps TNP students find volunteer placements in Portland. TSA students have
volunteered as Japanese language assistants at local schools, helpers at the local animal
shelter, and as playgroup leaders for children at the state refugee center.
Portland State has many student organizations/clubs that Waseda students may join
(please see http://www.salp.pdx.edu/groups.php and http://www.clubsports.pdx.edu/ for
current lists. The Waseda Oregon Office also runs a language exchange for LOHAS
students to interact with PSU students. Field trips in recent years have included hiking,
rafting, baseball and NBA games, museum trips, and festivals, as well as short-term
volunteer experiences.
Facilitation Plan:
The Waseda Oregon Office serves TSA students Monday-Friday from 9am-5pm. Students
receive their mail at the office and also use the dedicated computer lab (with printer and
paper). All staff serve Waseda students in one capacity or another (e.g. advising,
assisting with registration, resolving housing problems, etc…). There is also a student
services assistant who helps students with housing and emergency medical issues.
Students are given an emergency contact card with the home telephone numbers of all
staff .There is a very high level of academic and personal support to TNP students.
Credits (24-34 semester credit hours):
Students may earn 24-32 semester credit hours through LOHAS (though the transcripts
are issued in quarter credit hours of 36-48). If a student stays for summer, he/she may
earn an additional 8-10 semester credit hours.

おいて、環境問題に関心のある学生は、米国内でも有名なポートランド州立大学の環境
問題や環境の維持発展をテーマにすえたカリキュラムを受講し、大学を通して様々な地
域 活 動 に 参 加 が 可 能 で あ る 。 ポ ー ト ラ ン ド 州 立 大 学 に お け る 「 Environmental
Sustainability 」 の 科 目 は 、「 University Studies 」、「 Environmental Sciences and
Resources」

Sustainability and the Environment＝ロハスＴＳＡプログラムのキーポイント:
○ プログラム参加学生は、毎学期全員、「アカデミック・イングリッシュ」コースの登録が
必修となっている。このアカデミック・イングリッシュコースは、早大生のみの科目と
なる。冬学期と春学期については、TOEFL５２５点を超えている者については、4 単位
のアカデミック・イングリッシュ・サプリメンタルコースの登録は必要ないが、５２５
点未満の者については、登録が必要。PSU では、毎学期に一度、キャンパス内で
TOEFL-ITP の受験が可能。
○ プログラム参加学生は、ＴＯＥＦＬの得点の良し悪しに関わらず、秋学期から春学期ま
で毎学期、ロハス−コア科目の登録が必修。この科目は、ＰＳＵ正規学生も登録予定。
秋学期のロハス−コア科目には、通常授業に加えて”Mentored Inquiry Section” と言う週
１時間のディスカッションセッションも含まれている。
○ ＴＯＥＦＬ基準点を満たす者については、米国内では有名なＰＳＵの環境関連の科目群、
またはその他全分野のＰＳＵ正規科目群から選択履修が可能。
（ただし、科目を提供する
ＰＳＵの学科・専攻等により何らかの制限が加わる場合もあり）
○ 学期中に週２回ほどＰＳＵで日本語を学習する学生とのランゲージ・エクスチェンジ
(LEX) の機会を設定する予定。英語および日本語を学ぶ学生にとって、学生同士で知り
合いとなり、お互いにとって良い語学の練習となるよう願って設定するものだが、参加

は原則自由。（ランゲージ・エクスチェンジは科目ではありません。）

目と内容的に関連する科目群となっている。このため、本プログラムとしては、各学期
に英語の基準を満たした者については、一定の単位数のＰＳＵ正規科目の登録を認めて
い る が 、 そ の 正 規 科 目 登 録 の 際 に は 、 で き れ ば １ 科 目 は 下 記 の 「 Environmental

住宅・食事のプラン
宿舎には、以下２つのオプションがあります。
１． 学生寮
早大生は、ＰＳＵの学生寮に入居可能（個室とダブルルームがあるが空き状況による）。
家賃は、だいたい一学期間あたり＄９００∼＄１９００。食事プランはなく（オプショ

ンで付けることは可能）、寮のキッチンで自炊したり、近くのレストランやキャンパス
内で食事をとることになる。家具付きの部屋については、大部分が共用ダブルルームに
なっており、参加者は、ルームメートと共同生活を送る。
２． ホームステイ
参加早大生は、学生寮ではなく、ホームステイを選ぶことも可能。ホームステイの斡旋
は、早稲田オレゴンオフィスではなく、「アンディオ」という現地ホームステイ手配団
体が行う。ホームステイを選ぶ方は、同団体の申込用紙に記入し、申込料を支払うこと
となる。ホームステイ料金は、１ヶ月に概ね＄６００。ホームステイに関する情報はこ

体験学習の機会
ポートランド州立大学は多くの"Community Based Learning" courses（地域事情に
基づいた授業科目）があることで有名。ロハスＴＳＡに参加している学生の皆さんは
これらの科目を受講し、アメリカ人学生と一緒になってプロジェクトに取り組み、授
業の中で地域の非営利団体等でボランティアをし、地域社会へ貢献する機会を得るこ
とも出来る。早稲田オレゴンオフィスでは、プログラムに参加している早大生の皆さ
んに必要に応じてボランティア活動先を探すための補助を行っている。今までの早大
生の主な活動先の例としては、地域学校における日本語クラスのアシスタント、動物
保護施設の手伝い、そして難民センターでの子供のお世話係等。
ポートランド州立大学にはたくさんの学生団体・クラブがあり、早大生のような短期留
学生も参加が可能となっている。(詳細は、http://www.salp.pdx.edu/groups.php または
http://www.clubsports.pdx.edu/を参照。) また、プログラム参加中、ポートランド州立
大学の学生とのランゲージ・エクスチェンジの機会も用意されている。最近のフィール
ドトリップの例としては、ハイキング、ラフティング、プロ野球観戦、ＮＢＡバスケッ
トボール観戦、博物館、お祭りなど。
早稲田オレゴンオフィスの役割
ＰＳＵキャンパス内にある早稲田オレゴンオフィス（月曜日から金曜日の午前９時から
午後５時まで）では、郵便を受け取ったり、早大生専用のコンピューターを使用するこ
とが出来る（プリンターと印刷用紙も常備）。早稲田オレゴンオフィスのスタッフは、
授業の登録の手助けや住居に関連する問題を解決する、病気・事故などの緊急時の学生
サポートを行う。参加者の皆さんには、早稲田オレゴンオフィスのスタッフ全員の自宅
連絡先が書かれた緊急連絡先用カードを配布するなど、大学の授業に関することから留
学生活面に関することまでハイレベルのサポートを提供。
単位 (24-34 セメスター単位取得):
ロハスＴＳＡプログラムに参加中、アメリカで一般的なセメスター単位に換算すると、
２４−３２単位を取得可能。ただし、ポートランド州立大学ではクオーター単位を採用
