For Broader and Deeper Involvement in Activities for Biodiversity
While Japan still faces urgent challenges of restoration and issues surrounding nuclear
power in the aftermath of the Great East Japan Earthquake, seeing a steady increase in
the involvement towards efforts concerning natural restoration as well as the protection
and active utilization of satochi and satoyama (human-modified rural landscapes) by
a wide range of groups in our country including the government, corporations, and
citizen-based non-profit organizations (NPO) is a welcome trend. Though at a gradual
pace, we now see corporations, among others, catching on to making biodiversity a
mainstream issue. As such, the Contest for Corporate Activities on Biodiversity was
organized with the aim and purpose to take a comprehensive look into the efforts of
these progressively-minded corporations and groups, and to recognize outstanding
model examples from among them, providing a forum for these corporations to
share their skills and knowhow as well as the steps involved (ideas, measures, plans,
technologies, specific activities), to organize and make sense of these rising concerns.
Furthermore for this particular contest, in addition to the existing awards a special
award category, The Decade of ESD Special Award, was created in commemoration
of the UN Decade of Education for Sustainable Development, which Japan proposed
years ago.
For our third contest, a total of 73 applications were received, from which 52 (10
repeat and 42 new applicants) passed the initial screening. Ultimately, the Judging
Committee, following a substantial number of meetings reviewing the judgment policy,
carefully selected 10 activities for each of the awards, as introduced in this pamphlet.
Firstly, on the company and the group that received the two Minister’s Prizes.
Activities for biodiversity can be separated into two types: one encompassing
nationwide, with tens of thousands of citizens, corporations and other various
stakeholders, all differing in number and attributes collaborating together; and the
other being the opposite, covering a limited area with a narrow range of participants
geared towards a specific demographic (e.g. children, the elderly), but conducted upon
the close and intricate relationships between people and nature, production and the
lives of people, and regional welfare and education, creating organic and deep results.
Sompo Japan Nipponkoa Insurance Inc.’s SAVE JAPAN Project, the recipient of the
Environment Minister’s Prize is a classic example of the former, while the recipient
of the Agriculture, Forestry, and Fisheries Minister’s Prize, Ichiyama Environment

Conservation Society’s Leaving Our Water, Earth, and Home for the Next Generation,
is of the latter.
The Decade of ESD Special Award was awarded to BUNKAHOSO KAIHATSU
CENTER Inc.’s Japan High School Students Symposium on ESD which networked
5000 schools across Japan, putting their unique attribute as a media organization to
good use. Similarly, the winner of the Director-General’s Prize from the National
Land Afforestation Promotion Organization, Japan Post Group’s JP Children’s TreePlanting Project: Tohoku Regeneration Green Wave utilized the nation-wide nature of
its offices, involving 3000 participants from 58 kindergartens and pre-schools all across
the country.
On another front, Ishizaka sangyo co., ltd. that won the Aroma Environment
Association of Japan Prize, made an ecologically-conscious shift to their industrial
waste recycling facility, while undertaking their Yamayuri Club Satoyama Conservation
Project. The collaborating group of Rakuno Gakuen University, Asahiyama Zoo,
Conservation International Japan, EnVision Conservation Office, and Esri Japan, which
received The Earth, Water and Green Foundation President’s Prize, together carried out
the project Biodiversity Conservation Through Community-Based Rural Development
Around the Lower Kinabatangan River and Environmental Education. Both of these
activities narrowed their focus to a particular region, digging deep into the issue, and
furthermore extended their activities into the realm of environmental education.
Finally, the Judging Committee Chairman’s Prize was awarded to the Association for
Creating Sustainability in Urban Development of the Otemachi Marunouchi Yurakucho
District for their project Inline Breeding of Fireflies, which undertook a major
challenge in the heart of the urban core of Tokyo. The Judging Committee Special Prize
was given to three activities highly praised for their distinguishing efforts: Revival of
Coral Reefs Through the Use of Natural Decomposable Base, a highly technical project
carried out by KAJIMA CORPORATION, DAINIPPON PLASTICS CO., LTD.; Joint
Tagging Survey of Skipjack off the Pacific Coast of Japan, an academic undertaking by
AJINOMOTO Co., Ltd.; and finally, the Shibazuke Fishing Project, an endeavor by the
Torihama Fishermen’s Cooperative Association to preserve tradition.

Contest for Corporate Activities on Biodiversity is a contest to recognize
activities by companies and groups that have worked towards the preservation
of biodiversity; however, in tackling the issues surrounding biodiversity, civic
activities also play a crucial and indispensable part. From this standpoint,
outstanding civic activities highly praised by our collaborative partners which
have long continued to support to various civic activities (Astellas Pharma Inc.;
Lawson Inc. (Lawson Green Fund); Sompo Japan Environment Foundation; Fuji
Film Green Fund), were also given recognition with Prizes for Civic Activities
to Protect Biodiversity, and their work introduced at the ceremony. The names of

The project began in 2003 at Tama Zoo, with the aim to transform and
restore its dark woodlands within the park into satoyama (human-influenced
environments) with diverse biota, reminiscent of what once existed in the
area, and to create a bright and open wooded area that could be utilized
as recreational and educational areas for the public. Tama Zoo, one of
the largest zoos in the nation, was established in 1958, with its immense
premises covering 60 hectares of land. It set out to show its animals freely
moving about, with a goal to create a light-filled woodland inhabited by
diverse plants, animals, and insects, and to revive the archetypal satoyama
scenery that once was seen in the area. To accomplish this objective,
the association has worked closely with the zoo, engaging in dynamic
woodland management through which one could learn about the close ties
between people and the woods. The association has also helped to construct
strip roads and walking paths in the woods, install informational signs on
trees, proactively hosted numerous environmental education events in the
woods, as well as events to promote deeper and wider understanding of
woodlands to volunteers and the general public.

The most challenging mission for the Green Cycle Associates was to
restore a 2-hectare area in the woods to its original state as a watershed
protection forest. The area was a gaping hole produced as a result of land
clearing for illegal extraction of mountain sand. The condition of the
land, completely stripped of topsoil and nutrients, was extremely poor in
addition to the lack of funding and manpower. The group was completely
overwhelmed with this enormous task in the beginning. However, thanks to
tremendous cooperation and support from many individuals, Green Cycle
Associates could continue to work on the land. Slowly but surely, the land
began healing to its natural state.
One of our efforts was The 1000 Saplings Project, in which participants
17
were asked to gather acorns and fallen leaves from their local parks and
hills. The collected acorns were planted in sapling pots and given to the
participating children. At their home, these children and their family were
expected to grow acorns into 1000 saplings to eventually be planted on the
damaged site. The collected fallen leaves were spread in a large compost
leaf pool for the children to play, in due course turning into nutrients much
needed for the land. In May of the following year, a great number of parents
and their children returned with the saplings they grew. In the compost
many beetle grubs were found, much to the delight of the children. Some of
the saplings grew as tall as a person and these young saplings now comprise
a new forest, giving a preview of a lush forest to be seen in the future.

together with parents and area residents, the school took on the task of
grooming Tohoen, a woodland on their property, by pruning trees, installing
hand-built playground equipment, and planting 67 trees in 19 varieties
(dogwood, forsythia, alpine rose, camellia, cherry, etc.) to maximize its use
for science and environmental education for their children, as well as for
other special educational purposes, and to further improve school grounds.
The result yielded a wonderful environment for school children to protect
and nurture a wide range of plant life in Tohoen. The project is considered
a model activity, in which a tight intra-community relationship developed
among the school, parents, and area residents through their cooperative effort.

Tsukui Nature Conservation Society has long been involved in efforts
to rediscover and preserve nature in close-by environments, and this
year marks their 15th year in action. Their mission has included tackling
illegal dumping in the Takeyama Mountain, as well as the protection and
restoration of fireflies’ wild habitats. Through the years they have achieved
numerous accomplishments, including removal of abandoned cars and
other large garbage accumulated along hiking paths and valley floor by
the city after a 10-year appeal, involving citizens to pick up other smaller
trash, and rallying elementary school children in creating signs and planting
trees, refurbishing the hiking course into clean and pleasant foot paths.
Three years ago, they undertook a project to help restore rice paddies
deserted for 40 years, as habitats for fireflies and other aquatic organisms,
obtaining permission from individual landowners. With cooperation from
farmers and other groups, project participants experienced first hand the
planting, harvest, and husking of the rice crop, as well as the painstaking
labor of farming. The group has also hosted numerous activities fitted to the
integrated learning period of elementary schools, working towards further
development of the area together with the community, making the region an
even more pleasant place to live for all. It is their hope to continue in their
effort, to be an opportunity for more to become connected with nature and
become involved in the community.
藤前干潟を守る会は、藤前干潟を名古屋市のゴミ処分場建設計画か
ら守るために 1987 年に活動を開始し、2002 年にはラムサール条約登
録を果たした。2003 年から NPO 法人として活動している。
会では、干潟の保全の歴史を伝えるとともに、環境保全のメッセー
ジを多くの人に伝え、干潟とその流域の生物多様性を保全する活動を
展開している。
このたび受賞となったガタレンジャーの養成活動はその一つであ
り、
「いのちのつながりを次の世代に伝えたい」というおもいを込めた
環境教育の取組みである。ガタレンジャーとは、
「干潟のレンジャー」
、
という意味で、干潟の自然や生き物についての知識や調査や案内の技
術を身につけたボランティアガイドを育成している。また、ガタレン
ジャー Jr. は子ども向けの環境学習プログラムであり、一年を通じて干
潟の自然と生きものを体感し、自ら「気づき・考え・行動する」子ど
もが育っている。
Fujimae Ramsar Society (formerly known as Save Fujimae Association)
was founded in 1987 to protect Nagoya’s Fujimae Higata (Fujimae Tidal
Flat). Registered as a Ramsar Site in 2002, it has been an incorporated
non-profit organization since 2003. From its beginnings, the organization
continues to educate the public of the history of the Fujimae Higata,
alongside the importance of environmental conservation, running various
programs for the protection of biodiversity around the tidal flat. The GataRanger Training Program is one such environmental conservation program,
through which the group strongly hopes to convey the importance of
coexistence to the next generation. The name Gata-Ranger was created by
connecting the words higata and ranger. The rangers serve as volunteer
guides equipped with the knowledge and the ability to research and navigate
visitors through Fujimae Higata. The complementing Gata-Ranger Jr.
Training Program is aimed for children to learn about the environment. In
the program the children experience nature and its inhabitants in the higata
throughout the year. Through the program, the group has proudly observed
many children learning how to discover, think, and act independently.

第３回の表彰式は、2005 年から 2014 年までの 10 年間を国連「持続可能な開発のため教育（ESD）の 10
年」とすることが国連総会で採択され、最終年にあたる本年は、提唱国である日本（愛知県名古屋市及び岡山
県岡山市）において、
「持続可能な開発のための教育 (ESD) に関するユネスコ世界会議」が開催されたことから、
この併催イベント「あいち・なごや ESD 交流フェスタ」内において、一般公開で開催した。
また、生物多様性の問題は、企業活動のみではなく、市民活動も、重要かつ必要不可欠なものであることから、
当コンテスト協力団体により高く評価された市民活動についても、紹介・表彰した。
This year marks 10 years (2005-2014) of UN Education for Sustainable Development (ESD) adopted by the UN General
Assembly, and on this final year of the ESD decade, Japan, the proposing country of the initiative, hosted the UNESCO
Conference on ESD held in Aichi and Okayama. The Awards Ceremony for the 3rd Contest for Corporate Activities on
Biodiversity took place open to the general public in a parallel event to the conference, Aichi-Nagoya ESD Exchange Festa.
With realization that civic activities are essentially imperative in resolving issues surrounding biodiversity, as corporations
cannot tackle them alone, outstanding activities highly praised by our collaborative partners were also given recognition and
their work introduced at the ceremony.
