夕食の前の一枚… みんなの仲の良さが良くわかる一枚になりました！笑
11月21日から、1泊2日の日光旅行に行ってきました。学期末の旅行には珍しく、今学期来日して勉
強している学生の多くが参加し、にぎやかな旅行になりました。旅行が終わればテストやレポートに追われる学
生たちですが、この時ばかりは羽を伸ばし東照宮での見学を楽しんだり、ホテルの温泉でリラックスしたりしま
した。次の日は天気にも恵まれ、久しぶりの大自然も楽しみました！
The class of Fall 2014 took the last over night trip to Nikko.
Escaping their busy school days, they all enjoyed the relaxing
time in Niko such as the time at Toshogu Shrine, UNESCO
World Heritage, and relaxing time at Hotel’s hot springs. They
also enjoyed the great nature after a long time in Ryuokyo Ravine!

Maddie Brehm from St. Catherine University shares her experience
in the club activity she attends on campus!
I will now be incredibly cheesy
and encourage everyone to take part in
Japanese events and activities. It is definitely worth any confusion while it is happening and more than anything, it is these
kinds of things that will remain treasured
memories years in the future after we have
all gone our separate ways.
When I first arrived in Japan through IES, I felt like a freshman in college all over again. The days of orientation, the constant
meeting of new people, the endless advice to get involved and take
advantage of every opportunity. My main motivation for being in Japan
besides learning the language is to truly experience Japanese life, so
the opportunities I sought out were the ones that would help me observe Japanese people in their day to day lives. While KUIS and IES
have many opportunities for exchange students, many of them are
English based, involve American customs, or are from the perspective
of a tourist. Looking for something more authentic, I looked into clubs
on campus until I found AmazinGlee.
Looking back at my experiences with AmazinGlee these past
several weeks, I am amazed at how much I have learned about Japanese culture and the lifestyles of the average college student. In the
beginning, while I was welcomed into the club, I was clearly an outside
member. However as time went on I suddenly realized that I had been
accepted as a part of the “inner circle” that bonded this club of students and separated them from the other students at school. It also
meant that even if I couldn’t remember their names, I now had 60 new
friends who would smile at me in passing or stop to talk to me when
they are free.
Being involved in a club is certainly busy, and sometimes it is
a pain to give up my Friday nights, but I have absolutely no regrets. I
have made so many unique memories through AmazinGlee that most
study abroad students don't have, and I have also had the opportunity
to practice my Japanese with many people of varying English levels.
One of the unique opportunities I have had was to perform in
the Hamakaze Festival. AmazinGlee went all out—in what I have come
to see as the dedication of the Japanese student—with several rehearsals per week, even on Sundays, most of which went an hour later
than they were scheduled in order to practice for the event. Despite
the strict nature of
the rehearsals and
the constant evaluation and discussions of how each
song and dance
was progressing,
we all had a lot of
fun together, and
everyone was
brought a bit closer
together.
訳：IESを通して日本に来た当初は、
まるで大学一年生に戻った気分でした。オリエ
ンテーションの毎日、たくさんの人達との新し
い出会い、そして与えられた全ての機会を活か
すようにというアドバイス。留学中、日本語の
学習以外で私が絶対にしたかったことは、日本
らしい生活を体験することでした。神田外語大
学とIESで学生交流の機会がありましたが、殆どが英語で、アメリカの習慣
や、観光客の視点がもとになっていました。なので、もう少し日本人の本当の
生活に近づく為、学内のクラブ活動に興味を持ち、AmazinGleeに出会いまし
た。
AmazinGleeでの今までの経験を振り返ると、日本人大学生の文化や
生活習慣を、本当にたくさん学ぶことが出来たと思います。入部当初は、明ら
かにメンバーの中には入れませんでした。でも、毎回練習に参加してきたある
日、部員でしか味わうことのできない、みんなと同じ「輪」に入っていると気
付いた瞬間がありました。確かに全員の名前は決して覚えられていないかもし
れませんが、今では私に笑いかけてくれたり、暇な時に一緒に過ごす60人の
新しい友達がいます。
部活動に参加するということは、もちろん忙しく、時には金曜の夜
遊びを諦めたりしたこともありましたが、全く後悔はありません。AmazinGlee
を通して、他の留学生が体験していないようなたくさんの思い出を作ることが
できたし、多くの人と接したおかげで、日本語の練習にもなりました。
沢山の思い出の中で特に印象に残っているのが、浜風祭でみんなと
舞台に立てたことです。AmazinGleeのメンバー全員で週末や夜の時間も関係な
く何度もリハーサルをして、この舞台の為に準備してきました。リハーサルは
厳しく、みんなで歌やダンスの評価をしあうのも大変でしたが、その中でも楽
しいことが沢山ありました。そんな毎日を通して、みんなとの距離が縮まった
思います。
ありきたりなことになってしまいますが、留学中は日本の人が参加
するイベントに参加することは絶対にお勧めです。その中で起こる体験は、何
にも変えることができないし、思い出として別々の道を歩んでいくこの先も
ずっと残り続けます。

Back at the
University of Puget
Sound, I was encouraged by one of my
friends to take part in
the field placement
program. During the
application process, I
asked to be placed
somewhere where I
can learn more about
music business. Even
though I am a Japanese major, I have a
strong interest in western classical music. Therefore I thought that the
field placement program would be a great start to learn about classical
music in Japan.
Overall I feel as if I have gained a lot of things from participating in the field placement program. I have learned a lot of things as
well as met a lot of new people. From the concerts I helped out at to
the helping out with various things around the office, I have gained a lot
of valuable experiences that may prove to be helpful in the future. As
my field placement is nearing its end, I am truly thankful for the wonderful experiences that I have had during my study abroad in Japan.

ラムを進められました。プログラムに申込むときに、音楽業界の現場での
体験を希望しました。私の選考は日本語ですが、クラシック音楽に興味が
あるのが理由でした。なので、日本でのクラシック音楽を学ぶには、この
社会体験プログラムはとてもいいきっかけになると思っていました。
社会体験で私を受け入れてくれたのは、日本オーケストラ協会で
した。日本のクラシック文化を発展させるために、西洋クラシックを日本
に広めるのが目的の団体です。一年の中で大きなイベントの一つが、アジ
アオーケストラウィークです。このコンサートは、アジア太平洋地域の

the Asia Orchestra Week. In this concert, orchestras from the AsiaPacific region are invited to come to Japan to promote international
exchange through music. This year the Manila Philharmonic from the
Philippines, the Southern Sinfonia from New Zealand, as well as the
Yamagata Symphony Orchestra was invited to take part in this concert.
Throughout the first half of my field placement I was asked to
do various things. My mentor, Suzuki-san, instructed me to do some
things such as organizing ticket information and organizing posters that
were to be mailed out to other orchestras. Since the Asia Orchestra
Week concert was coming up soon, all of the tasks I was given was
related to helping out with this concert. As part of my work I was also
asked to go to the Asia Orchestra Week concert, which was held at the
Tokyo Opera City Hall in Shinjuku.
At the Asia Orchestra Week concert, I was instructed to help
with the programs for the concert. Along with four other volunteers, I
had to open the packages that contained the programs and organize
them into the ticket collector boxes at the entrance of the hall. Since
we were able to get the job done quickly, one of the volunteers showed
me around the entire hall while one of the orchestras was rehearsing.
As we walked through the different levels in the hall, I was able to truly
appreciate the design of the hall and how it caters to the sound of the
orchestra. After I was done passing out programs, I was given complimentary tickets by the AJSO to actually attend the concert.
I was really happy that I could actually attend the concert.
Along with the other volunteers, we were given really good seats and
were able to see the stage clearly. Since I play the violin I was happy
that we were placed on the side with the violins. During the concert I
was ale to watch how everyone played and see all the techniques they
used. At the end of the concert, I was told to also attend the reception
for the concert. At the reception I got to meet a lot of musicians from
both the Manila Philharmonic and the Southern Sinfonia. We talked a
lot about being a musician and what we liked to do.
In the second half of my field placement I was asked to go to
a new place called Duo Japan. Even though going to a new place
meant that I had to adjust to a new environment, I still enjoyed it. I got
to talk about the differences in music culture between America and
Japan with my new mentor, Nakatsugawa-san. Although my job this
time is to translate most of their website from Japanese to English, I
found that I am learning a lot of Japanese as well as things about Japanese music culture.
社会体験の前半は、いろいろな作業を経験しました。私を担当し
てくださった鈴木さんには、チケット情報を管理したり、他のオーケスト
ラ団体へのポスターの送付方法などを教えてもらいました。アジアオーケ
ストラウィークコンサートは、開催が近かったので、私の手伝いは全てコ
ンサートに関するものでした。また、東京オペラシティーホールで行われ
た実際のコンサートに行くこともできました。
コンサートでの私の役割は、プログラム配布の手伝いでした。4
人のボランティアと一緒に、コンサートのプログラムをホール入口のチ
ケット管理のところに並べました。作業が早く終わったので、ボランティ
アの一人が、オーケストラのリハーサル中に、ホール全体の案内をしてく
れてました。ホールは、各フロアのどの席も、音がしっかりいきわたるデ
ザインになっていてとても感動しました。プログラム配布作業の後、協会
からコンサートの特別招待チケットをいただきました。
私は実際のコンサートを見ることができて、本当に嬉しかったで
す。一緒に参加したボランティアの人たちと一緒に、舞台をよく見渡せ
る、とてもいい席に座らせていただきました。自分自身でもバイオリンを
演奏するので、バイオリンのそばの席だったこともとても嬉しかったで
す。コンサートの間、私は皆さんの演奏の仕方やテクニックを拝見出来ま
した。最後には、コンサートの打ち上げにも呼んでいただきました。打ち
上げの席では、フィリピンやニュージーランドから招待された音楽家の人
たちにお会いすることもできました。音楽家になるということや、好きな
ことを話しました。
社会体験の後半は、恵比寿にあるデュオジャパンという団体にお
世話になりました。新しい環境に慣れないといけませんでしたが、いい経
験になりました。社会体験中は、私を担当してくれた中津川さんと一緒
に、アメリカと日本の音楽文化の違いを話しました。こちらの団体での私
の主な作業は、団体のウェブサイトを日英に翻訳することで、言語以外に
も、日本の音楽文化をたくさん勉強することが出来ました。

来役立つことも多かったで
す。留学中に、このような素
晴らしい体験ができて、本当
に感謝しています。
毎年秋学期の奉仕活動でお世話になっていNGO団体
「てのはし」の活動に、今学期の学生も参加してきま
した！月2回行われている東池袋公園でのホームレス
への炊き出しは、普段アメリカでも奉仕活動を行って
いる学生にとっても、新鮮な体験でした。
普段の生活では、日本の明るい部分が目につきます
が、大都会東京ならではの社会問題を目の当たりに、
新たな日本社会の勉強をすることが出来ました。
Each semester, IES students go out to the community and help them. For this semester, 15 students attended went to a park in Tokyo and help
a NGO for their soup kitchen activity. The students see mostly the bright side of Japan while
their study abroad. It was perhaps one of the few
opportunities to see a different side of it, specially
one of the social problems of the world largest
city, Tokyo.
