TES Times
Still Waiting For Winter!?
I’m still waiting for the huge piles
of snow which lie at the side of
the road to a height waaaay
above my head for months and
months. What happened to my
annual complaints about clearing
the walls of snow that are left
behind after the snow plough
clears the road in front of my
house? I kind of miss that. So
hurry up winter, you’d better get
here soon, or it’ll be too late!...
everything in place for the next
year. Thanks Madoka.
Fortunately for Madoka, and for
anyone who has struggled to talk
to me on the phone, Yoko has
started to work 3 days a week, and
Mai’s replacement, Noriko Sato,
has started working in the
evenings, from Monday to Friday.
She is still learning the job, but we
are very happy to have her here
and I know that she will be a big
help to us all. Welcome to TES,
Noriko.
Welcome to 2012
…What? Hanami has already
finished? Winter won’t be coming
for another 9 months? That little
bit of snow we had was all that
we are getting this year?
Whoop! Fantastic! What a great
winter. I hope next winter is just
the same.
Anyway, here at TES the lack of
snow didn’t stop us from being
very busy preparing for the new
term which started at the
beginning of April. There was a
lot of preparation work to do, and
with Mai off to her new job in
Tokyo (good luck Mai), with Yoko
being on maternity leave, and
with Mai’s successor (more on
her later) not able to start working
here until the start of April, it
meant that Madoka was doing a
LOT of work. She did a great job
and, with the help of the
teachers, we think we’ve got
As we say hello to Noriko, we also
say goodbye to Todd, who has
stopped teaching Thursday
morning’s advanced class. Thanks
for the many years of great
lessons Todd. Todd has helped us
out for many years, and I hope to
be able to call on him again in the
future if we need him
As you will hear from Madoka and
Heather later, our charity café was
a huge success, raising over
100,000 yen! A big thank you to
everyone who took part in any way
We are running a “Spring
Campaign” this year. It is called
“Bring A Friend”. The idea is that
you, our current students, tell your
friends what a great place TES is
and encourage them to come and
study English here. If they do, both
you and they can get 2 months

tuition for half price. Yes, pay for
1 month and get a second month
free! We think that TES has the
best lessons, for the longest time,
for the cheapest price of any
eikaiwa in town, and so we want
everyone to know about that, and
come and try us out. I’m sure
they’ll love it here.
As we get closer to our 10th
anniversary celebrations this
summer, I will be putting up
information about our events,
both big and small, that we are
having. An amazing 16 people
have signed up to go to Scotland
with me, so thank you to them all.
I am looking forward to showing
you all around my home country.
For the rest of you who couldn’t
come, we MIGHT bring you back
a souvenir or 2!!

Spring in Joetsu!
By Steven Owen
This year is the first time I have been in Joetsu for the cherry blossom
season. It was unfortunate that we had to cancel the school hanami
party, but I hope everyone had the opportunity to enjoy the cherry
blossom at another time. Personally, I have enjoyed running in the park in
the morning before work. I have been surprised both by how beautiful
the cherry blossom is in Joetsu, as well as how many people are in the
park at 7 in the morning to enjoy it.
The next event to look forward to is golden week. I have more university
work than I would like, and will be very busy..... I hope everyone else can
have a nice, relaxing holiday without any essays!

Crazy Little Thing Called Live!
By Nicola Maruyama
Spring is here and the sun is out so I am feeling energetic
and looking forward to the year ahead. How are you all? I
hope you too are looking forward to another year at TES.
It`s our 10th anniversary and we have lots of events
planned so make sure you get involved and help us
celebrate!
Oh, by the way, do you like live music? Well if so please come
along to the ‘Crazy Little Thing Called Live!’ event being held
at EARTH live house on Saturday May 28th. There will be 8
bands playing mostly rock music. Tickets cost 1,000 yen, if
bought in advance, and 1,500 if bought on the day. As my
husband is playing in the ‘Blue Fiat Band’ I will have tickets to
sell so please don’t hesitate to ask. The doors opens at 14:30
and the first band will play at 15:00. Come along and enjoy the
music. ‘No Music No Life!’

I hope you like the pictures! Thank you so much for the
wonderful origami! It is incredible you folded the paper so
intricately! We were also astounded by how beautiful they
were (I personally loved the multi-coloured icosagon) Also
thanks for the extra origami paper.

Spring is here!!
Hello everyone! Heather here!
I’m so happy that the weather
has finally changed from
snow to sunshine (and rain). I
get really sad in the winter
because there isn’t enough
sunlight for me to soak up,
and it’s too cold to leave bed.
Luckily, we’re having much
better weather!
As you know, we had a charity
event on March 6th. We
received so many homemade
sweets and treats, had a great
time making ikebana, and
doing some finger painting!
The kids from Wakatake
Dormitory also had a ton of
fun! I’m so glad that they
enjoyed the event, and I’m so
very thankful for everyone
who donated their cakes and
their time! Even those who
couldn’t come but expressed
interest in the event: Thank
you!
By Heather Aplington
If you were one of the lucky
few who got to my
postcards before anyone
else, then you have a little
piece of my heart in a
picture frame! I love drawing
and I love trying my best to
improve my drawings in
whatever way I can!
All of my ten or so postcards
ran along the same theme. I
was mixing together Nature
and Peace. For Nature, I
wanted to highlight a few of
my favourite scenes or
flowers. For Peace, I wanted
to express that anyone, no
matter their differences, can
be the best of friends. I hope
that you enjoy my postcards
just as much as I enjoyed
drawing them!
Ciao for now!
