The Spirit of the Forest
Have you ever seen this animal before? It is a very rare breed of animal
that lives only in Japan. It is called the yamane . The yamane spends almost
half of its life sleeping.
It is believed that the yamane came to Japan long before humans did. The
animal can be found in Shikoku and Kyusyu as well as in Honshu. However,
no one knows how it spread to the areas.
The yamane is nocturnal, and it hibernates high in the mountains. Because
of its lifestyle, it is rarely seen by humans. Some people who saw the animal
said, “The yamane is the spirit of the forest.”
The yamane is facing a serious crisis now. Deforestation by humans has
been increasing, even high in the mountains. As the deforestation continues,
more and more natural forests, the precious habitat of the yamane , are being
lost. As a result, the number of this precious animal has been decreasing
rapidly. We need to think about why the yamane is endangered. If we do
not, we will lose it forever.
