Such is the true path of Kendo”. Also through the practice of Kendo, mental readiness is established. “Kendo training is to be taken very seriously and done properly. Mind and body are cultivated through vigorous training. This will in turn bring vitality to the mind and spirit. The uniqueness of Kendo teaches us respect, discipline and faith. In order to accomplish this, we must always give our all until our powers are exhausted. In an even broader sense, one must learn through the practice of Kendo to love our country, but also to promote peace and harmony on earth”. We are honored and privileged to be joined today by kendo champion Kunihide Koda, kyoshi 8th dan, from Tsukubu, Japan. Kendo, or the way of the sword, has changed tremendously from the days of the samurai until today. Sword skills in ancient Japan began as a means of defense, but since have evolved into a method of exercise and moral training. The major goal of today’s kendo is to improve oneself through the study of the sword. And by striving toward this goal we ultimately improve the world around us. Though rooted in Japan kendo has grown in popularity across the globe, and has contributed greatly to enhancing cross-cultural understanding. Today’s event provides an opportunity to develop sportsmanship, goodwill and mutual respect between participants and nations. May it be a memorable and safe experience, highlighted by new friendships and the thrill of competition. My sincere wishes for a successful tournament! Dear Kenshi, I am pleased to welcome you to the 2011 13th Annual Detroit Open Kendo Tournament. 250 participants have traveled from all over the United States and Canada to compete in today’s competition. This year, we are honored to receive two very special guests. I introduce to you Mr. Kuninori Matsuda, Consul General of Japan, in Detroit. I also am pleased to introduce Kunihide Koda Sensei, Kendo Kyoshi 8th Dan, Professor at the University of Tsukuba, from Japan This tournament is a time of fierce competition, but also a time of friendship and goodwill. Please keep in mind that each match should represent the true kendo spirit and good sportsmanship. I would like to express my sincere thanks and appreciation to the tournament committee members and the many people that make this event a success. A special thank you goes to the parents of Detroit Kendo Dojo and its Volunteers; without whom this tournament would not be possible. I wish you all a successful and most enjoyable tournament. You must maintain good health and vitality in every part of your body. 2) Develop a strong spirit. Your skill and spirit must be in perfect harmony. This will enable you to adapt and to cope with even the harshest of environments. 3) Training is critical. Your mind, spirit, hands and feet are to combine to work as one. Practice diligently to attain this. 4) Experiment and use your mind. Doing this will bring you closer to enlightenment as well as improve your skill and techniques. 5) Fundamental Training. Practicing basic techniques must be done properly. Posture, stance, grip, line of sight, footwork, attacking are critical. If you do not take these seriously, your skills will not evolve. 6) Always train with a focused spirit. Your spirit controls your body. Whether it is during practice or tournaments, always maintain a focused spirit and put forth your best effort. 7) Train with passion from beginning to end. You will encounter many hardships and suffering. 8) Do not become conceited or overconfident. Whether it is in your Kendo, your education, or even in your career, arrogance is the root of all failure. This kind of attitude is the greatest detriment to your training. 9) Maintain purity in your soul. Anger, deception, selfishness are enemies to your training. The path of Kendo is to train seriously in order to build character. 10) Live the way you train. Do not separate what you learned in Kendo from your everyday life. It is unfortunate if this happens. By keeping the path of Kendo and the path of life as one, you will benefit greatly. 8 International Kendo Federation – The Regulation of Kendo Shiai and Shinpan INDIVIDUAL Match Mudan Jr. & Sr. Youth & Mudan Adult; 3 minutes, 3 points match, Unlimited Extension Women, 1, 2, 3 & 4 Dan Up; 3 minutes, 3 points match, Unlimited Extension 4 Dan & Up Semifinal and Final; 5 minutes TEAM Match Youth; 2 minutes, 3 points match, No Extension Adult; 3 minutes, 3 points match, No Extension If same score & same points, Representative Match. The project ends, a new one begins, and back to the drawing board the designers go. Our Calty Design Research centers are full of such inspired dreamers. Together with the talented engineers at Toyota Technical Center (TTC), they bring these dreams to life. Please contact: Toshihiro Mizusaki @ 248-978-4196 24 DREAMERS . Yet Calty and TTC may be two of Toyota’s best kept secrets. By now, most people know that we build vehicles in the U.S.** But what they might not know is just how much we rely on Calty and TTC. They’re an integral part of our investment in America, and we can’t wait to see what they draw up next. * *2005 Center for Automotive Research study.
