University of Kōchi Japan Studies Program Lecture Series No. 34 Title Speaker Time Venue Lost in Translation? – The Pitfalls and Rewards of Rendering the “Tale of Genji” into English and Modern Japanese Prof. Tzvetana Kristeva (Professor at International Christian University, Tokyo) December 4, 2015, 18:30-20:30h University of Kōchi, Eikokuji campus (room A101) Anyone who has read the works of Professor Kristeva will have noticed that they stand out not only because of a baffling command of the source material but also because of the author’s irrepressible passion, or put otherwise: the fondness that perspires through the texts of this Bulgarian scholar for the classical works of Japan’s ancient and medieval period. Even while being widely acclaimed and boasting a multitude of publications – ranging from translations to zadankai transcripts – she is not an uncontested author. Especially within her field there are quite a few scholars who feel less than comfortable with her approach. As we are not specialists we cannot judge their views here, but what we can say with confidence after hearing her lecture is that her interpretation appeals to open-minded audiences, and that there does not seem to be much reason to reject it out of hand. It is Professor Kristeva’s aspiration to bring new ideas – a gust of fresh air – into the dusty and entrenched field that classical literature sometimes is. Subject to decades, no centuries of interpretation, appraisal and disdain, mobilization and regimentation, it seems that the classics of Japanese literature, and even the “Tale of Genji,” have lost much of their appeal among younger generations. To make things worse, the present education system remains such that pupils throughout Japan are being force-fed on classical literature as a bland matter to be regurgitated at entrance exams. Having gone through this drill, and lacking other opportunities to savior it, many gladly forget all about it, once the hurdle is cleared, unaware of the treasures of beauty and wisdom it holds. Savioring – that is what professor Kristeva set an example for, pleading for an interpretation that does justice to the inherent ambivalence of court literature that was produced 1000 years ago, an ambivalence that mirrors the inevitable contradictions of romance and desire, the creases of the human psyche, or the vicissitudes of human life itself. Neither clear-cut answers nor truths carved in stone, but rather the will to accept ambiguity and to leave room for a more sensitive, a more flexible and a more receptive way of looking at the classics: this is the lesson that we could and did draw from this lecture, and that we could and did take home with us. This lecture turned out to be a worthy finale for this year’s series, indeed. See you next year! 報告 高知県立大学文化学部主催 国際日本学プログラム講演シリーズ 34 タイトル 「ロストイントランスレーション？――源氏物語の現代語訳と英訳 について」 講師 ツベタナ・クリステワ先生（ICU 教授） 場所 永国寺キャンパス 日時 平成 27 年 12 月 4 日(金) 言語 日本語 参加者 教育研究棟 A101 講義室 18:30～20:30 41 名 クリステワ先生の著作を読んだことがある人なら、日本の古典文学に関する造詣の 深さに驚愕するのと同時に、ブルガリア出身の先生が抑えように抑えられない情熱を日 本の古典文学に傾け、その素晴らしさを現代の日本人に伝えようとする志の揺るぎなさ に胸を打たれたのではないだろうか。先生は、ブルガリア語への翻訳やあのドナルド・キ ーン先生との対談など、日本文学研究という領域において実に多種多様な貢献をして、 確固たる権威を築いてこられたといっても過言ではない。反面、その解釈に難色を示し、 その文学論を冷遇する専門家もあるらしい。門外漢である拙者は、その批判の当否に ついて容喙する資格がないのだが、講演を聞いて、端からその妥当性を否定しその言 わんとするところを退けるのはちょっと酷に過ぎるではないかと感じる。固定した概念や解釈に囚われず、新たな視点に触れる ことで好奇心をくすぐられ、新鮮な気持ちで原文にあたってみたくなった人も少なくないのではないか。 ここ数百年注釈に注釈を重ねてきた源氏物語研究は、源氏物語の魅力を後世に伝えることはともかくも、若い世代の心 をとらえる点で、満足のいく成果をあげてきたとは必ずしも言えない。そして、日本中の学校の生徒たちには授業のなかで源氏 物語に触れる機会があたえられているが、それが古典への好奇心につながるかは、うたがわしい。つまり、受験という、教育 制度が設ける枠からはみ出ることが好しとされないのに原因の一つがあるのではなかろうか。一方、指導を受けずにそのよう な好奇心と感性をはぐくむのは容易なことではない。というわけで、入試というハードルをいったん乗り越えることができれば、そ れまでの古典に関する知識は、好奇心もろとも、はかなく消え去っていく。 古典離れの挽回は可能か。熱意あふれるクリステワ先生の講演は、様々な制約を解き放ち、文学の曖昧性に寛容な解 釈を掲げ、また、古典を凝り固まった意味論ではなく当時の人物たちの心理に迫る「文学性」においてとらえなおす必要があ ると訴えているように感じた。たとえば、恋愛や複雑な男女関係に揺れ る登場人物たちの心理が一義的ではなく、両義性に富んでいるもので あったというところを見極めること、あるいは、一つしかない正解を追い 求めるのではなく、読者の想像力を掻き立て原文の奥深さを受け入れ て味わうこと、それがより開かれた解釈への第一歩ではないか。クリステ ワ先生がそう主張したと受け止める。今年度のシリーズの最後の公演 に、うってつけのテーマと講師であったと確信して、来年度も企画を 継続していきたい決意を新たにした次第である。 このレクチャーシリーズでは、日本と外国との境界線を越えて、日本文化の様々な顔を探ります。今後の予定が 決まり次第お知らせ申し上げます。We look forward to seeing you at our next event!
