第９講 時制①
本講と第 10 講では時制に関わる英文を読む。本講では基本時制（現在・過去・未来）と
進行形を扱い，第 10 講では完了形を扱う。
(1) 現在時制
現在時制とは，時間を超越して現在はっきりしていることを述べる時制表現である。した
がって，
「今」を含んで一定期間成り立つ状態(現在の状態 / 一般的真理やことわざ)や，
「今」
を含んで繰り返し成り立つことがら(現在の習慣的・反復的動作 / 一般的真理やことわざ)を
述べる時に用いられる表現である。
(2) 過去時制
過去時制は，過去の動作，過去の状態，過去の習慣などを表す場合に用いられる。
(3) 未来を表す表現
未来を表す主要な表現には、次のようなものがある。
(a) will do
(b) be going to do
(c) 現時点で確定している未来の事柄は現在形で表す。
(d) 現在進行形 （予定，計画）
(e) be about to do「まさに…しようとしている」 / be to do「…する予定である」
★ (c)，(d)では tomorrow などといった未来を示す副詞語句が必要。
(4) 進行形
進行形は進行中の行為や出来事を表す。つまり，その行為や出来事が終わっていないとい
うことを表す。

began to keep records of their history. They are the first and only beings to seek out their
own evolutional history.

Rainbows have always appealed to poets, from Shakespeare, who said that adding
another hue to the rainbow is “ridiculous excess,” to the writers of such popular songs as
“Over the Rainbow” and “I’m Always Chasing Rainbows.” The latter refers to the old
myth that a pot of gold is buried under the place where a rainbow touches the earth.
