ゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団
Gewandhaus Quartett
2008/2009 シーズンに結成 200 周年を祝うゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団は、世界最古の弦楽四重奏
団
である。1809 年にヴァイオリニストのアウグト・マッティと他のゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団の 3 人
の音楽家によって誕生。以来、ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団の首席奏者達によって、今日にいたるま
で途切れることなく音楽活動を続けている。
19 世紀のメンバーにはメンデルスゾーンにヴァイオリン協奏曲を献呈されたＦ．ダヴィッド、ブ
ラームスのヴァイオリン協奏曲の初演を行なったＪ．ヨアヒム等がいる。
世界各地での演奏に加え、平成天皇や英国のチャールズ皇太子の前でも非公開で演奏を披露してい
るほか、ドイツのローマン・ヘルツォーク大統領が 1999 年 3 月にアルゼンチンを公式訪問した折に
同行。NHK による収録も行なわれている。
ゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団は、一貫して同時代の音楽を支持してきた。今までにメンデルス
ゾーン、シューマン、ブルッフ、ドヴォルジャーク、レーガーを含む 100 以上の作品の初演を行っ
ている。
結成以来共演を行なった著名演奏家の中にはクララ・シューマン、ブラームス、ブゾーニ、グリ
ーグ、ニキシュ、ケンプ、ルービンシュタインなどの名前もある。近年ではヨーヨー・マ、ザビー
ネ・マイヤーなどと共演を行なっている。
ＣＤ録音にも積極的に取り組み、ベートーヴェンの後期の四重奏曲のＣＤについて`Klassik heute’
(Classic Today)誌は、
「模範的で、かつひとつの基準ともなり得る解釈」を持ち、「卓越した音の美
しさ」で聴く者を魅了すると述べ、また「この録音は、ゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団が世界で最
も優れた四重奏団のひとつであるという名声を再確認するものである」としめくくっている。ベー
トーヴェンの弦楽四重奏曲の全曲録音は NCA レーベルより発売されており、過去に同四重奏団によ
って初演されたシューマンとメンデルスゾーンの録音も「ゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団が世界に
おける一流の四重奏団のひとつとして挙げられていることは尤もなことである」と評されている。
フランク＝ミヒャエル・エルベン(第 1 ヴァイオリン) Frank=Michael Erben( 1st Violin)
1965 年ライプツィヒ生まれ。５歳よりヴァイオリンを学び、７歳でライプツィヒのフェリックス・
メンデルスゾーン・バルトルディー音楽大学への入学を認められる。在学中にゲヴァントハウス管
弦楽団に客演し、1987 年に 22 歳で同管弦楽団の首席コンサートマスターに任命された。ネヴィル・
マリナー、クルト・マズア、ヘルベルト・ブロムシュテットなどの指揮のもと、モーツァルト、ベ
ートーヴェン、メンデルスゾーン、チャイコフスキー、シベリウスのヴァイオリン協奏曲を演奏し、
ソリストとしてサラサーテの「カルメン幻想曲」（ＣＤ）、メンデルスゾーンのヴァイオリン協奏曲
（ＤＶＤ）も発売されている（共にクルト・マズア指揮ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団との共演）。1993
年よりゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重奏団の第１ヴァイオリンを務めている。

コンラート・ズスケ（第 2 ヴァイオリン） Conrad Suske(2nd Violin)
1958 年ライプツィヒ生まれ。1971 年～1981 年、ベルリン（ハンス・アイスラー）とライプツィヒ
（フェリックス・メンデルスゾーン・バルトルディー）の音楽大学のマスタークラスでヴァイオリ
ンと室内楽を学ぶ。1981 年にライプツィヒのゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団に入団し、1984 年に同楽団
の首席コンサートマスター代理に任命された。同楽団における活動の他に、ズスケは、ドイツのさ
まざまなピアニストとのデュオ演奏会を定期的に行っている。1989 年にゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重
奏団に加わり、また、1993 年にはバイロイト祝祭管弦楽団のメンバーとしても活躍している。
アントン・ジヴァエフ（ヴィオラ) Anton Jivaev (Viola)
1976 年、ウズベキスタンの首都タシケントに生まれたアントン・ジヴァエフはロシアの音楽一家の
出身で幼少期からクラシック、ジャズを学んだ。7 歳で初めてのヴァイオリンのンレッスンを受け、
16 歳でヴィオラに転向する。タシケントの国立音楽大学を卒業後、フィラデルフィアのカーティス
音楽院でロベルト・ディアツに師事。卒業後 5 年間、ノースカロライナ交響楽団のソロ・ヴィオラ
奏者として活躍。現在はゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団のメンバーであり、ゲヴァントハウス弦楽四重
奏団とヴェルビエ・チェンバーオーケストラにも所属している。
レオナルド・フレイ－マイバッハ（チェロ）
Leonard Frey-Maibach(Cello)
1991 年、リヨンの音楽一家に生まれ 8 歳でチェロを始める。15 歳にしてリヨン・コンセルヴァトワ
ールで一等を獲得。チェロをローランド・ピドーおよびグザヴィエ・フィリップに、室内楽をジャ
ン・スレムとヴァレリー・エマールに学んだ。2013 年、ユリウス・ベルガ―博士の元で大学を卒業
する。室内楽ではヴォルフガング・ベッチャー、ボリス・ガルリツキーとライナー・クスマウルか
ら大きな影響を受けており、その間も定期的にザルツブルグ、クローンベルグ、ミュンヘン、ライ
プツィヒ、ボルツァーノ、リスボン、パリなどで室内楽を演奏。2007 年以来、フランスのパリ・ユ
ースオーケストラやグスタフ・マーラー・ユースオーケストラなど数々のユースオーケストラで積
極的に演奏。また、彼はミュンヘン?・フィルハーモニー管弦楽団のアカデミストとしてロリン・マ
ゼールとズビン・メータの指揮で演奏している。2013 年、ゲヴァントハウス管弦楽団の首席チェロ
奏者代理となり、その後首席チェロ奏者の座についた。弓はリヨンのデニス・ベルゲロン、チェロ
はニコラ・ルポーの 1810 年製。

Gewandhaus Quartett
It is the oldest, uninterrupted existing
string quartet in the world. Founded almost 200 years ago, the Leipzig Gewandhaus-Quartett can be
seen as a remarkable part of the western history of music. Shortly after its foundation in 1808 by the
former leader of the Gewandhaus Orchestra Heinrich August Matthäi the ensemble, whose chamber
music concerts immediately attracted a lively response from the public, established itself as a
permanent part of the Leipzig concert scene and became a highlight of Saxon music tradition. Since
then the quartet has continued its concert activity from generation to generation until today with
great success.
In the 19th century the quartet's style of playing
was first and foremost influenced by the members Ferdinand David, to whom Mendelssohn
dedicated his violin concerto, and Joseph Joachim, who gave the first performance of Brahm’s violin
concerto. The current members of the Gewandhaus-Quartett maintaining the heritage of this unique
ensemble today have been playing together since 1993. Traditionally the quartet consists of the
leaders of the Gewandhaus Orchestra.
The ensemble gave the first performance
of about 100 works, among others by Felix Mendelssohn Bartholdy, Robert Schumann, Antonín
Dvorák, Max Bruch and Max Reger often in the presence or with the assistance of the composers.
Even today the quartet dedicates itself not only to the classical repertoire but especially to
contemporary music. Recently the ensemble premiered the work ‘Deciso’ by the Leipzig composer
Olav Kröger as well as Günther Kochan’s piano quintet at the Leipzig Gewandhaus. Furthermore,
they made a CD recording of Ermano Maggini’s string quartet.
During the history the ensemble played
with such important musicians as Clara Schumann, Johannes Brahms, Edvard Grieg and Arthur
Nikisch. This tradition is still kept today, and the Gewandhaus-Quartett works with internationally
renowned artists such as Yo-Yo Ma, Menahem Pressler and Sabine Meyer. In addition to their regular
performances at the Leipzig Gewandhaus (the quartet has its own chamber music series there) the
four musicians very successfully appeared at major music centres in Europe, Japan, Argentina and
the USA. Furthermore, the Gewandhaus-Quartett gave concerts in private audiences of the Japanese
emperor Akihito and the British heir apparent Prince Charles.
Many CD recordings demonstrate
the high international reputation of the ensemble. The current members of the quartet have already
recorded various CDs for NCA including a CD with the late string quartets by Beethoven, the
recording of works by Shostakovitch, Stravinsky and Prokofieff and a CD with string quartets by

Schumann and Mendelssohn which were formerly premiered by the Gewandhaus-Quartett.
The quartet took part also in the production
of films about classical music by the Japanese broadcasting corporation NHK, playing quartets by
Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert and Mendelssohn Bartholdy.
