LIGHT OF THE DHARMA - Steveston Buddhist Temple
日本語部分訳記事は、文書末に添付されています。 June 2014 法 の と も し び LIGHT OF THE DHARMA REPEAT EVENTS: BINGO: In Memory of My Father As I sit here writing this article, it is still hard SEIZA MEDITATION: to believe that already Fridays @ 10:30 am a month has gone by & Thursdays @ 7:30pm* since the passing of my * except 3rd Thursday of each Month father, Kyojo Ikuta. I’d like to begin my article by thanking the SHIN BUDDHISM INTRO Steveston Buddhist Temple Board as well Lectures June 3 - 24 as all the members who have expressed Tuesdays @ 7:30 pm their kind support and shared in the loss of my father. I know that Steveston held BON ODORI PRACTICE: a special place in his heart and it was June 2nd to July 11th Mondays & Fridays @ 7;00pm here that he gave his final Dharma talk at our 50th Anniversary of the Hondo last December. Both my parents really appreciated being able to come out here Sun Jun 01, 2014 one last time and I believe my father 10:30 AM Shotsuki Monthly gave one of the more memorable Dharma Memorial Service talks on that occasion as it came straight from his heart. Sun Jun 01, 2014 11:55 AM Doors Open RichAs I had mentioned during the May mond Volunteer Workshop Shotsuki memorial service, the way my father entered Nirvana was so amazing Sat & Sun Jun 07&08 , 2014 that my family feels sure he is truly at 10:00 AM Doors Open RMD peace. I first received a phone call from Mon Jun 09, 2014 my older brother saying that Dad was not 7:30 PMBoard Meeting doing so well and had been admitted to the hospital. He thought it might be a Sat Jun 14, 2014 2:00 PMFVBT Monthly Service good idea if I could make arrangements 6 PM Father’s Day Sleepover to go visit Dad in the hospital. I flew out to Alberta on Wednesday, Sun Jun 15, 2014 10:00 AM Dharma School Picnic April 23rd. When I arrived at the hospital my father was weak, but conscious. I Wed Jun 18, 2014 stayed through the night with him and 11:00 AM Nikkei Home Service had a nice visit. He mentioned that he was indebted to the many members at Thu Jun 19, 2014 10:00 AM Moe no Kai the Steveston temple. I was surprised 7:00 PMSBT Movie Night by how sharp his memory was as he proceeded to list off the names of the Sat Jun 21, 2014 pioneers of the Steveston Temple. At 10:00 AM Garage Sale that time, there was a sense that maybe Sun Jun 29, 2014 he just might pull through; however, 9:00 AM Temple Clean-up overnight things turned for the worse as the doctors realized that he was just too weak to fight the infection he had. On Thursday morning he began experiencing some discomfort so a morphine drip was given which caused him to sleep for most of the day. That Contact: Jeanne Ryan Wednesdays @ 6:30pm COMING UP: evening, as some of us were with him, I was talking to my sister-in-law about the tradition of the pillow-side service. Suddenly my father opened his eyes. My mother said “should we have a short omairi”? I led in the chanting of the Juseige. My father was conscious and looking at us and his breathing was calm and steady. I don’t think any of us thought of it as being the “pillow-side” service, more just a chant to ease his mind. However, just as we came to the end of the main chant and were about to recite the nembutsu, he closed his eyes and took his last breath before passing away. I am 100% certain that he made a conscious decision that his time had come and he was ready to move on and passed on without any struggle. In all my years as a minister, I have never experienced anyone who passed away exactly at the conclusion of the chanting. None of us could believe what had happened, yet it was so like my father to live and die as he wished. It was truly a remarkable passing, and has made it easier for our family to deal with the loss, knowing that he is completely at peace. The outpouring of sympathy and support from everyone has also made it easier on us so thank you all for your kindness. Looking to the future, I hope I can live as my father did, within the embrace of the Nembutsu until the very end. In Gassho, Grant Ikuta FUJINKAI TOBAN #2 604-230-8787 CHAIR SCHEDULE Shotsuki June 1st: June Ikuta Shotsuki July 6th: June Ikuta OBITUARY We would like to express our heartfelt sympathy to the family members of the following deceased: Sean Shigeru Campbell Tazuko Kurahashi 1 May 9th, 2014 May 11th, 2014 19 Years old 69 Years old DHARMA LIGHT OBON UPDATE President’s Message I would like to thank all the members of the temple for your patience as we transition into the new format for the newsletter. For our second edition for easier reading we have made a number of improvements, such as, changing the font type and size and reducing the number of columns to a page. As we move forward we are always open to suggestions. So please feel free to contact myself, the executives of the temple or Terry Beresford, our Public Relations Committee Chairman, with your thoughts. Until very recently, much of the services and the business of the temple were carried out in Japanese. With the changing demographics and increasing nonJapanese speaking members and visitors, the translations and use of English words have not kept pace with the change in language. For this reason “Ask Sensei” was added to the newsletter a few years ago to bridge the gap for meaningful understanding. For myself I have found this to be very helpful understanding the Japanese titles, words used in religious services and in the discussions of the practice of Jodo Shinshu Buddhism. If anyone has any questions please do not hesitate to write to “Ask Sensei.” It is anonymous and you may be surprised to learn that many others wanted to ask the same question. We are always looking for ways to improve the newsletter and to make it meaningful to all readers. In gassho, Bud Sakamoto As we look at the temple schedule, Obon is less than two months away. Once again Obon will take place over two days starting with festivities on Saturday, July 19th, 2014 and concluding with the Obon Service on Sunday, July 20th, 2014. More information will be provided in the Summer newsletter. To become familiar with the dances for the Obon Festival, the temple will be offering lessons every Monday and Friday at 7:00pm in the gymnasium starting June 2nd. Please attend the practices to learn the new enlightening steps. Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery Visitation Tour The religious committee is looking into possibly organizing a bus tour for the Vancouver Island Obon Cemetery visitation to take place on the weekend of August 9th – 10th weekend. We will be going to the Island to hold services at cemeteries in Nanaimo, Cumberland, Port Alberni, Chemainus, Duncan, and Victoria. If you would be interested in joining us for this most meaningful visit of the Island, please let Rev. Grant know. More details will be included in next month’s newsletter.
