回目は先日の全校朝礼での校長先生の英語による訓話です。皆さん、聞き取れましたか？校長先生の熱い思いは届
きましたか？訳を掲載していますので、じっくり読んでみましょう。

Good morning, everyone. Today, I’d like to talk to you in English.
I am a math teacher, not an English teacher, and I haven’t spoken English in front of many
people since I was a university student. I am not a good speaker of English, so I am a little
embarrassed to speak English like this. But I made up my mind to try it because I always tell you
to become global-minded. I think that I must show you how serious I am. Please listen to me.
These days we have a lot of problems, such as global warming, the shortage of energy, economic
crisis, terrorism, conflicts, or war, and we cannot solve these problems even if we try to do so in
our own countries.
To survive in such a global society, what do you think is
important? I want you to have the following five elements. Power
to make an effort, power to accept differences, power to think
logically, knowing about where you live; Oita or Japan, and
English ability.
Even in our city, Usa, many people from other Asian countries
are working. That’s why even if you think you won’t leave Usa
city and will live here in the future, you have a chance to make contact with people from other
countries. It is very important to have a global mind.
In Usa High School, we’ve created a “ Global Usa High School Plan” and are going to encourage
you to become global-minded through many activities. Some students went to Hawaii last year
and had a great experience with the local people. Soon, we will announce this year’s program. I am
sure what you see with your own eyes and what you feel with your skin will change the world.
Let’s break out of our shells and challenge ourselves. Let’s do it together! Thank you.

皆さん、おはようございます。今日は全部英語で話します。
私は、英語の教員ではなく数学の教員です。多くの人前で英語を話すのは大学生以来です。だから、英語が上手
なわけではないし、少し恥ずかしくもあります。でも、皆さんにグローバル人材になれと言っている私がそんなこ
とではいけないと思い、率先して挑戦することにしました。
今、世界では、環境やエネルギー、経済、テロや紛争などさまざまな問題が起きており、一つの国だけでは解決
できなくなっています。
そんなグローバル社会を生きていくために、私たちが身につけておかなければならないことは何でしょう。私は
５つあると思います。挑戦する力、多様性を受け入れる力、論理的に考える力、大分や日本のことをきちんと知っ
ておくこと、それに英語力です。
すでに宇佐でもアジアの人々が多く働いています。だから、たとえ、皆さんがこれからずっと宇佐で生活すると
しても、グローバル意識をもつことは重要です。
宇佐高校では「グローバルＵＳＡ高プラン」を定め、さまざまな取組を通して、皆さんをグローバル人材として
育てていきます。昨年から始まったハワイ短期留学プログラムもその一つです。自分の目で見て自分の肌で感じた
ことは、必ず自分を大きく成長させ、世界を広げてくれます。まずは、自分の殻を破って、一緒に挑戦してほしい
と思います。
