Excuse me, do you know where the Beverly Hills Hotel is?
すみません、ビバリーヒルズホテルがどこにあるか知っていますか?
2a.
A: Where is the Beverly Hills Hotel?
B: Do you know where the Beverly Hills Hotel is ?
(WH
+
S
+
V)
Questions A and B above have the same meaning, but question B is less
abrupt and softer. You can use this style when you ask questions to strangers or people in a higher position than you such as your teacher or your
boss. Let’s look at the full conversation:
S1: Excuse me, do you know where the Beverly Hills Hotel is?
S2: Yeah, it’s on Sunset Boulevard.
Here’s another example.
C: How much are adult tickets?
D: Do you know how much adult tickets are ?
(WH
+
S
+
V)
WH
+
‘be’ verbs
Again, questions C and D have the same meaning, but question D is less
abrupt and softer. Let’s look at the full conversation:
S1: Excuse me, do you know how much tickets for adults are?
S2: I think they are 20 dollars.
In examples A/B, one question (Where is the Beverly Hills Hotel) was
attached to another question (Do you know). The same thing happened in
examples C/D - (How much are tickets for adults) was attached to (Do you
know). As you can see in B and D, the structure is:
WH + subject (S) + verb (V).

Lesson 38
Day 1 - At the Front Desk
that you and your friend are visiting a foreign country for four
2b. Imagine
days. You need to ask questions about directions, bus and subway schedules, etc. Change the WH-questions below like in examples B and D on the
last page. This time, start your questions with:
Excuse me, could you tell us... (to ask the hotel clerk or bus driver)
Choose any words in the parentheses (or write something original) as well
as the answer (circle it). NOTE: The main focus of this lesson is making
questions. Therefore, the answers (A) are written first, followed by the
questions (Q). This way, the last thing you will hear is the question and
this will help you focus on the question making.
