A: Where is the Beverly Hills Hotel? B: Do you know where the Beverly Hills Hotel is ? (WH + S + V) Questions A and B above have the same meaning, but question B is less abrupt and softer. You can use this style when you ask questions to strangers or people in a higher position than you such as your teacher or your boss. Let’s look at the full conversation: S1: Excuse me, do you know where the Beverly Hills Hotel is? S2: Yeah, it’s on Sunset Boulevard. Here’s another example. C: How much are adult tickets? D: Do you know how much adult tickets are ? (WH + S + V) WH + ‘be’ verbs Again, questions C and D have the same meaning, but question D is less abrupt and softer. Let’s look at the full conversation: S1: Excuse me, do you know how much tickets for adults are? S2: I think they are 20 dollars. In examples A/B, one question (Where is the Beverly Hills Hotel) was attached to another question (Do you know). The same thing happened in examples C/D - (How much are tickets for adults) was attached to (Do you know). As you can see in B and D, the structure is: WH + subject (S) + verb (V). 151 │ Lesson 38 Day 1 - At the Front Desk that you and your friend are visiting a foreign country for four 2b. Imagine days. You need to ask questions about directions, bus and subway schedules, etc. Change the WH-questions below like in examples B and D on the last page. This time, start your questions with: Excuse me, could you tell us... (to ask the hotel clerk or bus driver) Choose any words in the parentheses (or write something original) as well as the answer (circle it). NOTE: The main focus of this lesson is making questions. Therefore, the answers (A) are written first, followed by the questions (Q). Next, let’s talk about WH + other kinds of verbs such as ‘leave’, ‘cost’, ‘say’, etc. Look at the examples below: 間 接 疑 問 文 WH + be 動 詞 と 他 の 動 詞 E: When does the tour bus leave? F: Do you know when the tour bus leaves? (WH + S + WH + does V) In example F, the word ’does’ disappears and the verb (leaves) changes to third person. The structure is WH + S + V. G: How much do tickets cost? H: Do you know how much tickets cost? (WH + S + 38 WH + do V) In example H, the word ’do’ disappears but the verb (cost) stays the same. The structure is still WH + S + V. I: What did the tour guide say? J: Do you know what the tour guide said? (WH + S + WH + did V) In example J, the word ’did’ disappears and the verb (say) changes to past tense (said).
