この度、サイモン・フィッツジェラルドの個展「rewrite」の開催をご案内申し
上げます。 これは昨年 11 月に大阪で開催された個展「Theoria」に続くもので、
サイモン・フィッツジェラルドの初の東京での開催となります。
本展では、琥珀を混ぜ合わせた独特の深みのある油絵具を、削るように引っ掻き
東京都中央区日本橋本町 2-6-13 山三ビル地階
ながら描いた「Open Book」シリーズの作品、約 2 年間掛けて制作され、この

テオリア、須彌山からアトス山への想像の巡礼
私がイギリスで美大生であった頃、アメリカ人のカトリック教神父トーマス・マート
ンの著書に出会った。ケンタッキー州にあるゲッセマニ修道院の彼の独房には、彼の
友人であった画家アド・ラインハルトから贈られた小さな黒い絵画が掛かっていたと
いう話しを読んだことを覚えている。黒いミニマル抽象絵画の前で一人祈るマートン
のイメージは、以来鮮明に私の中に記憶された。
およそ二年前私は、最初の一週間は強烈な痛みがあり約一ヶ月入院した。その一ヶ月
の間に自分自身について多くを学んだが、最も私自身に残ったことは、我慢できない
痛みに対する究極の反応であり、それは祈るという事であった。私は 30 年ほどにも
わたって精神修養について学び、訓練を受けてきたので、祈りは特に私にとって新し
いことではない。しかし、この祈りはこれまでとはまったく異なる経験であり、何かもっ
と抽象的なことであった ...。そこで私は、マートンの独房に掛かったラインハルトの
絵画について再び考え始めた。
2004 年の個展「インドラの網」以来、私の想像の中でこれまでとは異なる聖なる山
に登り、それが新しい一連の絵画の焦点となるようにしてみたいと考えていた。私は
次の山を見つけたと今感じており、祈りがどのようなかたちに自分には見えるのかを
確かめたかったのである。テサロニケ人への第一の手紙 (5:17) においてパウロは、朗
読者達に「絶えず祈りなさい」と説く。この大変に有名な唱句は、14 世紀ギリシャ、
アトス山の正教会僧院でヘシュカスト修道士による絶え間ないイエスの祈りの諳誦の
ための基礎になった。私は視覚的に同意義な絶え間ない祈りとして、普遍的なキリス
ト教の祈りの言葉である「主よ、憐れみたまえ キリスト、憐れみたまえ」というテキ
ストを使うことに決めた。
ドローイング「Silent Sound」はパリンプセストのようなもので、消された層が連続
して透けて見え、しばしば祈りにつきものの混乱や反響を作りだしているように表面
を左右している。「Open Book」は、色彩に独特の深みをもたらし、重厚な絵画に仕
上げるべく液状の琥珀を混ぜた油絵具が分厚く重なっている絵画である。テキストは
絵画の内や外から現れてはまた溶け込んでゆく。それはちょうどあのような修行をし
た誰もが知っているようにちょうどこんな境地になるのだ。
トーマス・マートンは一体どんなふうに感じただろう。

Simon Fitzgerald's fist solo exhibition in Tokyo. Introducing the paintings of the "Open Book" series that is scratched as like cuting down a
heavy layer oil painting with a peculiar depth that mixes amber and drawn. Additionally the nine small drawings on paper of “rewrite” series
excuted these 3 years are installed.

Biography
Theoria, an imaginary pilgrimage from Meru to Athos
When I was an art student at college in England I came across the
writings of the American Catholic Priest Thomas Merton. I remember
reading that he was given a small black painting by his friend the
painter Ad Reinhardt, which he hung in his cell in the Abby of
Gethsemani in Kentucky. This image of Merton praying in his cell in
front of a black minimal abstract painting has remained vividly with me
ever since.
About two years ago I spent a month in hospital, the first week in
intense pain. I learnt a lot about myself in that month but what stays
with me most was my ultimate reaction to pain I felt I couldn’t bear, I
prayed. Prayer is not particularly new to me, I have studied and
trained in spiritual practice for something like 30 years but this prayer
was a totally different experience, something much more
abstract…and I began to start thinking about Reinhardt’s painting in
Merton’s cell once again.
Since my exhibition “Indra’s Net” in 2004 I have wanted to climb
another spiritual mountain in my imagination and let it become the
focus for a new set of paintings. I wanted to see how the shape of
prayer would look to me now that I felt I had found my next mountain.
In his first letter to the Thessalonians (5:17) Paul exhorts his readers
to “pray continually” and in 14th century Greece this very famous
verse became the foundation for continual recitation of the Jesus
Prayer by the Hesychast monks of the Orthodox Church in their
monasteries on Mount Athos. I decided to use the text of the universal
Christian prayer “Kyrie eleison Christe eleison” as a visual equivalent
of continuous prayer.
The “Silent Sound” drawings are like palimpsests, the erased under
layers continue to show through and influence the surface, creating
the confusion and echoes that often accompany prayer. The “Open
Book” paintings are in thick layers of oil paint mixed with liquefied
amber to give a particular depth to the colour and heaviness to the
paint. The text is seen as emerging and remerging in and out of the
paint, and as anyone who has tried to follow such a discipline knows this is just how it feels.
I wonder how Thomas Merton would have felt?
