It was a beautiful village for taking care of elderly people, and I have never seen so large place and so many facilities. Some people can go home every day, and some people have to live in the village for a long time. It depends on their physical status and mental status. Just like Japan, there are more and more elderly people in Taiwan, so taking care of them be- comes more and more important now. This time, I am so happy that we can see how the village works, and what the difference in taking care of elder between Taiwan and Japan. It was a good chance. After the Yuai Village, we went to Old Medical Books Museum, Yutoku Shrine, and Oda family s tea room to experience the Japanese culture. It was amazing that we could go into the Yutoku Shrine to see the praying-ceremony for us. I was touched beyond words. Besides Yutoku Shrine, a tea ceremony in Oda family s tea room was also an impressive thing. Although it was so complicated and you have to wait for a long time just to prepare one bowl of tea, however, it attracted me not only because of the graceful posture and movement, but also because of the thought― all for the guest . On July 10 afternoon, we and the Hawaii students demonstrated our PBL for the third grade of medical students. It was my first time PBL in English. I was so nervous because my English speaking ability was not so well, and all the students just looked at us. Although we didn t have enough time to finish it, we tried our best to demonstrate the spirit of it. I hope the 3rd 佐賀大学医学部の 国際交流・交換留学生の声 第 号 ! grade students could learn something from it. There were still many fun experiences in this exchange program, just like riding the Segway in Emergency, trying endoscope on simulator, and having the medical English lesson with the 3rd grade students. After the course in the hospital, we also joined the club of badminton and Japanese archery with Saga students. I am happy that we can make so many friends, not only Japanese and Hawaii students but also many professors and doctors. I was so lucky to have this chance to go to Saga University for this exchange program. I learned a lot from it. And I appreciate, sincerely, all the professors, doctors and students I met in Saga. Everyone was so kind and friendly. I will always remember all things in this program. Thank everyone!!! IFMSA 定例交換留学 本年 月、スウェーデンの Umea University から Andréas Forsblad さん、スペインの University of Cantabria から Marina Serrano Fernández さんの 名を IFMSA 交換留学生として受け入れました。諸先生方の御協力のもと、Andréas さんは精 神科と眼科で、Marina さんは胸部外科と整形外科で合計 週間の病院実習を行いました。 IFMSA って何だろう？ Andréas さん Marina さん International Federation of Medical Students Associations の略で、日本語名は国際医学生連盟です。 年に設立され、 WMA（世界医師会）・WHO（世界保健機関）によって、公式に医学生を代表する国際フォーラムとして認められ、ECOSOC （国連経済社会理事会）の会員資格をもつ非営利・非政治の国連 NGO です。現在 ヶ国以上が加盟し、 万人以上の医学 生を代表する団体で、本部をフランスの世界医師会内に置いています。IFMSA には公衆衛生、エイズと生殖医療、難民、医 学教育、臨床交換留学、基礎交換留学の つの常設委員会があり、さまざまなプロジェクト・ワークショップを世界各国で運 営しています。 現在 IFMSA 日本支部は、全国の医学部 校の団体会員及び 人を超える個人会員によって構成され、各大学のご協力の もと、年間 名を、私たち学生による運営で交換留学に送り出しています。また、非営利・非政治の原則のもと、子供を通じ た健康増進プロジェクト・禁煙啓発活動・放課後性教育プロジェクト・在日難民との交流会参加などの国内活動や、サマース クール・難民キャンプでのスタディーツアーなど、様々な国際活動も行なっています。 （医学科 年・IFMSA-SAGA 代表 杉野絢子） My Saga keys. I could say about my great experience, but words just can t express how amazing I feel. What I am sure is this experience will make me a better person and have a big impact to my future life. Summer Exchange Program Report Cheng Hung-Chih (Frank) I never have the experience of being exchange student before, so I am glad to have the chance to study in Saga Medical School as an exchange student. Despite Saga being called country-side, there are many cultural assets that describe true Japanese culture and people in Saga are very enthusiastic about international exchange. Everyone is kind and friendly. I also want to learn Japanese, so it is a good chance for me to practice my Japanese. In this program, we visited many departments, hospitals, and clinics to observe and emulate. In every department, there were some doctors to introduce the environment and clinical works of the department for us. In addition, we participated in the meeting to discuss the inpatients condition with the attending doctors and student doctors. When we made the rounds of the wards, the doctor will let us know the patient s condition and something we need to take notice before we go to see the patients. If available, we also did physical examination for patients. After we made the rounds of the wards, we still discussed more detail about the pathophysiology of the disease. Therefore, although it was the first time we saw the patients, we could grasp the important things very soon. The most impressive course for me was gastroenterology department. We not only observed the whole procedure of endoscopic submucosa dissection but also let us try to operate GI endoscope by ourselves to model of colon. I have never operated the GI endoscope by myself before, so this experience was unforgettable for me. In addition, it is worth to mention that we had the chance to visit the SAGA HIMAT. It is the first heavy ion medical accelerator in Kyushu. Heavy Ion beam cancer radiotherapy is the leading-edge radiotherapy, precisely irradiate cancerous cells with carbon ions accelerated to about 60-80% of the speed of light. Compared to conventional radiotherapy like X-ray or gamma ray, it is possible to concentrate the radiation dose very effectively. Therefore, it is free of pain and has minimal side effects. In Taiwan, this therapy was introduced from Japan. Maybe it will be the main therapy of cancer in the future. Therefore, visiting SAGA HIMAT was really a special course in this program. As the old saying goes, He that travels far knows much , visiting Saga let me learn many things and make many friends. It was very convenient and comfortable to live and study in Saga. Although the Japanese language was initially one of the great barriers for me, there were plenty of opportunities to learn Japanese. My Japanese has a great progress, and I can try to communicate with people in Japanese now. Thanks for the support of all the professors and doctors in Saga Medical School. There is still so much …………………… The Experience as an Exchange Student to Saga Medical School Ho Yu-yang (Micheal) It was my first time as an exchange student to study abroad. Despite it was only a 2-weeks program, I still learned much during this visit to Saga. Saga Medical School locates at Nabeshima area in Saga prefecture. It is a clean and beautiful place with many nice and friendly people. When we first time arrived at Saga, the medical student drove to Saga station and waited for us almost until midnight. What s more, she took us to some famous attractions and introduced Japanese culture to us. There are two departments in Saga Medical School, the medical and nursing departments. Also, Saga University Hospital is seated by the medical school. So it is convenient for doctors to teach Saga medical students just by walking. Medical students seem to have a good relationship with the nursing students. In such an environment, I think they will cooperate with each other very well in the future. If I were a doctor in the Saga University Hospital, I would feel delighted with the members in this hospital. It is the first year that Fu-Jen Catholic University Medical School and Saga Medical School have exchange program. Originally, I thought that it was a program for students who were able to speak Japanese, but we were told that there would also be other students from Hawaii joining this program. It was a good chance to exchange experience as a medical student with other countries students in English. That way, we not only practiced English conversation very much but also learned the different ways of learning and how foreign medical students were qualified to become a doctor. Saga medical students learn basic medical knowledge with lectures, PBL, and TBL in their third and fourth grade, and we learn mainly by PBL. This time, we participated in the demonstration of PBL to the third grade medical students and discussed over the topic Coronary Arterial Disease with Hawaii s students in English. Although we are a little nervous to demonstrate in English, but we were so familiar with PBL that we could still do well this time. Actually, it is important for a student to adapt the different ways of learning, but I think it is more important that we should know other better ways of learning and compare the pros and cons between them. Therefore, I hope someday we can integrate a best way of learning for our juniors. In Japan, medical students go to the hospital as clerkship for two years, and graduate on their sixth grade, then start internship for two years. After that, they choose their specialties and become residents. However, in Taiwan, we graduate on our seventh grade after one-year internship. Then, we become PGY (postgraduate year) and after that become residents. There are a little difference between us but generally very similar in every stage corresponding to the age. Also, they have to pass two examinations at fourth grade and sixth grade, whereas we take the second exam at seventh grade. We share many common points with Japanese medical students but we are all sur- prised at the small difference. To me, I prefer to take examination earlier and have more time in internship to practice procedures and taking histories. I believe that a doctor without mature clinical skills won t convince patients, but, as the saying goes that practice makes perfect . I think it s better in Japanese medical system than in Taiwan. This time, the program plan has already been done only for the fifth grade students. After this visit, I think it was a good decision! Actually, we didn t have enough time in different specialties, so we could only learn a few from different courses. For example, when we went to gastroenterology, we spent most time seeing endoscopy and surgery. If we didn t see these procedures before, we might not know what doctors were doing. Since they were busy and they were not used to teaching in English, it would be difficult for a fourth grade medical student to realize what they are doing. Also, it was a good plan that we wouldn t spend all time in Saga University Hospital. We also went to Oda Hospital, Eguchi Hospital, and private clinics. Through visiting these places, we could have a deep realization about Ikyoku system in Saga. The most important of all, through this visit, I was impressed with the facility SAGA HIMAT . It is the latest medical science that Japanese have which is different from other countries. We were the first group of foreign students to visit HIMAT, and I was amazed by effective results this facility can make to deal with solid cancer. It is really expecting to introduce such technology to Taiwan! I am really appreciated to visit Saga Medical School this time. Thanks Professor Oda and Professor Yip make great effort to promote this program. Also, we are so grateful for Professor Oda for providing living space and applying scholarship for us. It was so lucky that we just finished our fifth grade course, the first year of clerkship, in June. So I really want to know what the difference in the medical environment between Taiwan and Japan. Therefore, I so expected this exchange program. In the first week, I was surprised that the history record for patient was written by Japanese, not by English, and that the textbooks for medical students were also written by Japanese. Although it is more difficult to communicate with foreigner, however, doctors and students can understand more correctly and more efficiently. Obviously, it has both advantages and disadvantages. The other that surprised me was technology of SAGA HIMAT. With heavy ion beams it is possible to concentrate the radiation dose very effectively, enabling pinpoint irradiation of cancerous cells.
