Date/time: Saturday, April 11, 2015, 7:00 – 10:00 pm Place: EJCA Community Centre 6750 – 88 Street, Edmonton Here is a possible senario for the EJCA Izakaya event. 1. You will pre-register for the event with your name and guest’s name at [email protected] or (780) 466-8166, by April 3, 2015. 2. At the entrance, pay the fee ($15: member, $20:nonmember) and receive food tickets. 3. Sake, beer and soft drinks are available at a cash bar. 4. In the hall, there will be 10 mini “Yatai” (food vendor tables), and a bar. Each “Yatai” will serve one kind of dish: Yaki tori, Ebi-furai (crumbled prawn), Yaki-soba noodles, Chicken Tsukune, Tako-yaki, Onigiri (rice ball), Beef tataki, Nimono, Shumai (dumplings), mackerel miso-ni, Harihari-zuke, etc. 5. You will enjoy Sake/beer and try different types of food, meet friends, and make new friends. 6. You can purchase additional food tickets as required. 7. We may show some suitable TV programs. Instructions are in English. Classes are for real beginners of Japanese cooking. The object is to enable you to cook these dishes all by yourself after the class. The courses will include basics like how to prepare rice and how to make red bean paste. Hopefully Mother Nature will provide us with an early spring too….to make up for last year’s seemingly endless winter! I am writing this edition of the President’s Corner from Peoria, Arizona, where Diane and I have escaped Edmonton’s weather for the past few weeks. Needless to say, we have been enjoying the summer-like temperatures in the greater Phoenix area and are looking forward to spring-like weather when we return to Edmonton in late March. We’ve attended the Phoenix Matsuri Festival (the 3rd weekend of Feberuary) for several years now. It is a huge 2-day festival which includes sales of arts and crafts, jewelry and pottery by very talented artists, traditional odori dancing by all ages, a kimono fashion show, performances by several taiko drumming groups, bonsai trees for display and sale, vendors selling old kimonos and obi, T-shirts, hats, Japanese books and magazines and washi paper, exhibits of both traditional and creative origami, and many hundreds of young people dressed as either anime or “cosplay” (costume play) characters. A variety of Japanese foods provided by several not-for-profit associations is also a huge part of the festival that attracts thousands of attendees over the 2 days. I inform you about this because the EJCA Board is interested in developing its own Matsuri festival event. We realize it takes a lot of time and the commitment of many volunteers and businesses to even consider such an undertaking. As part of our planning, some members of the Board will be heading down to Calgary this summer to meet with organizers of the Calgary Japanese Community Association, as this August will be their 5th Matsuri Festival. We will keep you informed of our progress as our research continues. Based upon the Board’s strategic plan and member feedback, some exciting new events will be launched in the next couple of months. Izakaya Evening (Apr 11, 2015) is in the works, as is a cooking class on May 9, 2015. Also, planning is progressing for a Kita No Taiko vs Kendo Maki Sushi Roll-out Contest…stay tuned for details! 会長挨拶 Moshi Moshi デービッド・ミツイ バンクーバーではもう風の中に春の気配が感じられ、桜が咲きほこ っていることでしょう。エドモントンは去年は冬が何時までも続きまし たから、今年はきっと春が早く訪れるはずだ、と思いたいです。この 挨拶はアリゾナ州ペオリアで書いています。妻のダイアンと私はエド モントンの冬を逃れて、ここで数週間、夏のような気候を楽しんでい ますのであしからず。三月末にエドモントンへ帰る頃には、エドモン トンも春になっているようにと願っています。 ２月の第３週末に開かれたフェニックス・マツリ・フェスティバルに行 って来ました。ここ数年同じ時に開かれる二日間のお祭りで様々な 催し物があります。工芸品、宝飾品、陶器の即売、日本舞踊、着物 ファションショウ、太鼓、盆栽の展示と即売、古着の即売、日本の本 と和紙の即売、伝統的な折り紙、モダーン折り紙の展示等々です。 また何百人もの若い人達がコスプレでお祭りにきています。もちろ ん日本食の屋台もいろいろな団体が出しています。この二日間のお 祭りに何千人もの人が来ます。皆様にこのフェスティバルの事をお 伝えしたのは、ＥＪＣＡでもＥＪＣＡの主催するお祭りの可能性を考え ているからです。このようなお祭りを主催するためには大勢のボラン ティアとビジネスの参加が不可欠なことは承知しています。先ずはＥ ＪＣＡの役員会がカルガリー日系人会が主催しているマツリ・フェス ティバルの視察に行く予定です。カルガリーのマツリ・フェスティバル は今年で五回目になります。 役員会では、役員会の企画と皆様からのサーベイへの反応に基づ いていくつかの新しいプロジェクトを進めています。４月１１日にはＥ ＪＣＡセンターで「居酒屋の夕べ」を開催します。そして５月９日には、 これもＥＪＣＡセンターで日本料理教室を開きます。まだ計画中です が、北の太鼓と剣道グループの「巻き寿司決戦」も楽しみです。５月 ３日の栗本日本庭園のこどもの日にもＥＪＣＡのメンバーが参加しま す。 いろいろと楽しく忙しい春になりそうです。請うご期待！ EJCA Hina Matsuri As well, Kodomo no Hi at the Kurimoto Japanese Garden in Devon takes place on Sunday, May 3, 2015. Happy Spring! March - April 2015 3 Moshi Moshi Japanese Language School Alumni Website Sanae Ohki The Metro Edmonton Japanese Community School th started in1977. It will celebrate its 40 anniversary in 2017. There are many people in Japan and Canada who attended or whose children attended the school. Some of them are living in other countries. Some alumni and parents are already thinking of visiting Edmonton in 2017 to attend the anniversary event. This will be great encouragement and support for the current school members. Please send your message and reestablish friendships with your old friends. Teachers and friends of the school members are also welcomed to join the circle of the school. Volunteers Required-Kodomo No Hi If you would like to spend a day at the Devonian Botanic Garden interacting with people who are interested in learning about Japanese culture, then consider volunteering at Kodomo no Hi! We are looking for volunteers to introduce the art of origami and to ensure the safety of some Japanese dolls on display. Free admission to the garden and concession coupons will be provided as a small token of appreciation. There are three sessions per year and each session has three classes, one each for 1. Total Beginners 2. Intermediate Beginners 3. Advanced Beginners Instructors reviewed our achievements of the last five years and decided to offer more structured programs using a new textbook called “Genki げんき”. Genki is one of the most recently released textbooks and has been used in the University of Alberta and McEwan University Japanese classes. We will use a new curriculum starting September 2015. The 2015 spring session (April-June) will be the transition period to move to the new curriculum. So, a class for students without any Japanese language skills will not be held in the spring term. However, a Total Beginner class will be held in September 2015 and details will be in the July-August issue of Moshi Moshi. The new lesson plan for a one year cycle is: 2015 2016 2016 Term 1 Sep - Nov Term 2 Jan - March Term 3 April - June Total beginner Introduction level. No 「Genki１」Chapters 1 and 2 textbook will be used. Objective: Can read and write Hiragana and Katakana Beginner 「Genki１」 「Genki１」 「Genki１」 Intermediate Chapters 3 and 4 Chapters 5 and 6 Chapters 7 and 8 Beginner 「Genki１」 「Genki１」 「Genki１」Chapter Advanced Review of Chapter 8 Chapter 10 11, if possible include Chapter 9 Chapter 12 *All clases will include discussion of Japanese culture, conversation and other topics in addition to using the textbooks. Anyone who has Japanese Language learning experience may start lessons in an appropriate class at anytime. At the end of the Term 3, students will decide with feedback from instructors, which level they will go to in the next Term 1. Each term has 10 two-hour lessons on Wednesdays 7:00 – 9:00 pm. The current tuition fee is $105/term plus cost of a textbook and workbook if you are new to the program. EJCA would like to express our thanks to Mrs. Mami Saito of the Japan Foundation for her leadership in the development of a new curriculum. Instructors will develop detailed lesson plans so that EJCA can offer consistent and integrated lessons between classes and levels. 2015 Spring Sessions The skill requirements for entering the three levels of classes being held in the spring term are: Level Class Date Reading/Writing Grammar & Vocabulary th Beginner April 8 June 10 Intermediate Beginner April 15 – June 17 th Able to read and write hiragana and katakana. Able to conjugate adjectives and verbs (past and present, affirmative and negative). Sufficient vocabulary to carry on simple everyday conversations. Able to conjugate verbs and adjectives. Sufficient vocabulary to initiate and carry on conversation using more complex sentence structures. March - April 2015 5 Moshi Moshi EJCA Hina Matsuri by Sandra Mak In Japan, Hina Matsuri (also known as Girls' Day) is observed on March 3 to wish for happiness and health for young girls (don’t worry, boys are not left out, as Children's Day, formerly Boy’s Day, is celebrated on May 5 and is even recognized as a national holiday). On March 14, the EJCA hosted our very own Hina Matsuri event, which was well-attended by about 100 members of the public and EJCA. It is always a pleasure to meet new and long-time members and friends, young and old alike. The EJCA hall was filled with the warm smiles of several generations; the youngest guest was just 4 months old and the oldest was 93 years old! The tradition of displaying dolls began with the belief that bad luck and misfortune could be purged by transferring them to dolls, throwing the dolls into a river and burning them. This tradition is still practiced in some parts of Japan today. Luckily for us, this practice of burning dolls is now rare and has been replaced by displaying ornate scenes of the Imperial Court. The EJCA is fortunate to own two lovely seven-tier Hina doll sets. One of the sets was brought to Canada before World War II; it is more than 80 years old! The other set is about 30 years old. A newer emperor and empress doll pair was donated by Dr. and Mrs. Ikawa, who were in Edmonton in the 1990s. All the dolls were on display at the EJCA Hina Matsuri event for all to admire. The afternoon was kicked off by a demonstration of the meditative ceremony of preparing and serving matcha tea by the Tea Ceremony Club. This put the guests in the mood to enjoy some sweets and matcha tea of their own. The festival atmosphere was accented by kimonoclad Tea Ceremony Club members flitting amongst the guests, ensuring that everyone had the chance to enjoy some refreshments. Guests were then treated to performances by the Wakaba Kai Dance club. The ladies looked lovely in their matching light-blue and pink kimonos, and danced with grace and skill. To round off the demonstrations, JeanMarcel Duciaume of the Ikebana club shared his deep understanding of the art of Japanese flower arranging. While the audience watched on, he created three arrangements, each unique in its foliage and artistic balance. Throughout the afternoon, there was a constant flurry of tea-whisking, kimono-dressing, doll-arranging and dishwashing. Young children happily coloured with crayons and munched on Hina arare (special Hina Matsuri snacks) that were thoughtfully prepared for them ahead of the event. Thanks to all the volunteers for working so hard to ensure the success of this event! …cont. to next page 6 March – April 2015 ＥＪＣＡの雛祭り サンドラ・マック 日本では雛祭りは３月３日に、女の子の健康と幸せを願って行われ ます（男の子のお祭りは５月５日の子供の日まで待たなければなり ません。この日は国の祝日です）。ＥＪＣＡは３月１４日（土）に雛祭り をＥＪＣＡセンターで行いました。生後四ヶ月の赤ちゃんから９３歳の シニアーまで１００名近くの人達が参加しました。 雛祭りに雛人形を飾る習わしは、その昔、不幸を人から人形に移し てその人形を川に流したり、炎で燃やしたりして不幸を消滅すること に起源がありました。日本では現在でもこのようなことを続けている 所があります。しかし、雛人形を燃やしてしまうことは現在では稀で す。今では天皇、皇后をはじめとした宮廷の様子を雛段に飾ること が一般的です。ＥＪＣＡは七段セットの雛人形を二組持っています。 一組は第二次世界大戦前に日本からカナダに来た８０年以上も古 い雛人形です。もう一組は 30 年ほどの古さです。お内裏様は、１９９ ０年代にエドモントンに在住し今もＥＪＣＡ会員の井川博士夫妻が日 本に帰られてからＥＪＣＡに寄贈してくださったものです。 ＥＪＣＡ雛祭りは茶道クラブのお点前からはじまりました。参加者にも 抹茶、煎茶、大福がふるまわれました。抹茶と大福で伝統的なお茶 の時間に参加出来て、雛祭りの雰囲気は上々です。次に若葉会の メンバーによる日本舞踊がありました。桃色と薄いブルーの着物は あでやかでみずみずしく、日本舞踊は女の子のお祝いにぴったりで した。デモンストレーションの最後はジーンマルセル・デュシュームさ んによる生け花の実演です。生け花の過程を説明していただき、な るほどこういう精神で生け花が構成されているのかとよくわかりまし た。お点前の茶席の花もデュシュームさんの生けたものです。この 時の生け花はヂュシュームさんの撮影した雛祭りの写真と解説と一 緒にブログ Of Flowers, Poetry and Other Essentials...で見ることが できます。 ＥＪＣＡセンターはこの土曜日 の午後一杯、子供連れの人 達で賑わいました。若葉会の 皆様、茶道クラブの皆様の他 にも参加者で着物を着ていら した方がいて、会場は華やか な雰囲気でした。小さな子供 には雛人形の塗り絵や紅白 のひなあられが用意してあり ました。日本では雛人形につ いて面白い言い伝えがありま す。雛祭りの後に雛人形を直 ぐに片付けない女の子は、伴 侶を見つけるのが難しいとい うのです。ＥＪＣＡの雛祭りで は、雛人形は雛祭りの後にす ぐに丁寧に箱にしまいました から、このような心配をする 必要はありません。お雛様に はまた来年の雛祭りでお目に かかれます。 Flower arrangemeny by Jean-Marcel Duciaume. Moshi Moshi …..from previous page It is said that if Hina doll sets are left on display after Hina Matsuri, girls would have a difficult time finding a husband. Thankfully, at the conclusion of the EJCA Hina Matsuri event, every figurine was carefully wrapped, boxed and put away, ensuring marriage-minded girls wouldn't have to search too long to find their partners and we can look forward to viewing these pristine sets again next year! The Alberta High School Japanese Speech Contest Hina Matsuri Tsurushi Kazari 第３回アルバータ州高校生スピーチコンテスト 長倉由紀子 by Yukiko Nagakura I was one of the judges at The High School Japanese Speech Contest held at Harry Ainly High School on Saturday, March 14, 2015. The speech contest was cosponsored by The Alberta Japanese Language Teachers Association and the Consulate-General of Japan in Calgary. EJCA made a financial donation to the contest. The speech contest was unique because it was composed of four video presentations of dramas，three live scats on the stage, and individual speeches. The students were required of not only Japanese speaking skills but also acting skills and abilities to communicate Japanese culture to others. I found it amazing that in spite of these tough requirements, the students could truely enjoy what they were doing. The presentations included such topics as love and friendship, reflecting their youthfulness, and differences in business practices between Canada and Japan. Sixteen students made individual speech presentations. They all memorized their speeches and enthusiastically talked to the audience. They talked about their personal experience and thought that were really appealing to us. The first place for individual speeches went to Alison for her “A Small Thing”. She said that we would be happy when we could pursue what we wanted to do and not when we made a lot of money. The second place went to Maristell for her “My Friend”. She discussed how to keep good relationships with our friends. The third place went to Murya for his “Singapore”. He presented his pride of being a Singapolian. The special prize was given to Marianne for her “To Overcome”. She presented her own experience of being caught in a risky situation. ３月１４日(土)、ハリー・エインリー高校で、アルバータ州の高校で日 本語コースをとっている生徒さんを対象にした日本語スピーチ・コン テストが行われ、審査員として参加しました。アルバータ日本語教師 会と在カルガリー日本国総領事館の共催で行われ、当ＥＪＣＡも協 賛金という形で賛助しました。 ドラマ形式のビデオ(４グループ)と舞台上でのスキット(３グループ)と いうグループ参加のコンテストは、日本語が良くできるだけではなく、 演技力や日本文化を伝えることも評価されるものですが、参加者は 緊張することもなく、楽しんで演じているのが印象的でした。トピック は、ティーンエイジャーらしい恋や友達のストーリーもある中、日本と カナダのビジネスマンの違いを演じたものは、ユーモラスでなるほど と思いました。 スピーチ・コンテストは、１６名が参加し、全文を暗記したり、聴衆に 熱心に語りかけたりと、高校生とは思えないほど上手な参加者が多 かったです。トピックはやはり自分の体験に基づいたものが多く、聞 いている私たちの心を打つ感動的なものや、共感を呼ぶものばかり でした。 第一位はビル・ゲイツと猫カフェを比べ、お金を持っていることでは なく、自分のしたい事ができるというのが幸せだと論じたアリソンさん。 第二位は自分の態度から友達に去られた経験から友達との付き合 い方を話したマリステラさん。第三位は故郷のシンガポールを誇りに 思う自分の気持ちを述べたスリヤさんでした。自分の危険な目に遭 った出来事を語ったマリアンヌさんが特別賞を獲得しました。 みな本当に熱心で、日本語が好きなんだなあと心が温かくなりまし た。皆様も来年、このように日本や日本語に情熱を傾けている高校 生のスピーチ・コンテストを是非のぞいてみてください。 EJCA garden in spring Listening to these speeches, I was so happy because I could feel their love for learning the Japanese language. March - April 2015 7 Moshi Moshi Library Corner by Jim Hoyano In this issue we feature the two most recent NHK morning dramas. Both complete series are available in the EJCA Library and of course have English subtitles. Both series are dramatizations of real life women: one has a connection to Canada (Anne of Green Gables) and the second has the first non-Japanese woman in the lead role. Here is just a brief background of the NHK morning dramas (Asadora for short). The NHK Asadora is a semi-annual renzoku drama, which started in April 1961. Today's Asadora drama contains around 150 or so 15-minute episodes, airing Monday through Saturday at 8:15am JST. (For those of you who subscribe to TVJapan, the time is 7:45 pm Sunday to Friday without English subtitles). Two drama series are introduced each year, the first series starting from early April to late September, and the second series starting from early October to late March of the following year. In past years, several series have covered an entire calendar year, the most notable being Oshin in 1983-84, which was 297 episodes long (see the July-August 2014 Moshi Moshi). Hanako and Anne (Air dates: March-September 2014) Born to a poor family in Yamanashi prefecture, in 1903 at the age of 10, Muraoka Hanako was accepted by a missionary school in Tokyo. It was her father Ando Kippei’s greatest wish that his daughter get a higher education. The missionary school was attended by daughters from noble and wealthy families, and as a scholarship case, Hanako was reminded by her father to never feel inferior to her rich schoolmates. As the classes were carried out in English, Hanako faced a culture shock when she started school. Unable to understand the teachers nor able to grasp the conversation of her peers, Hanako resolved to work really hard at her studies. This drama follows Hanako from her childhood, through her years at the missionary school, to her life as a school teacher and finally as the translator of L.M. Montgomery's "Anne of Green Gables". Massan (Air dates: Oct 2014 – March 2015) It is 1920 and Kameyama Masaharu (Tamayama Tetsuji) is the second son of the Kameyama Brewery, which specializes in making Japanese sake in the Hiroshima region. Wanting to strike out on his own path, Masaharu discovers a taste for whiskey and determines to travel to Scotland to learn how it is made first hand. While in Scotland, Masaharu meets the charming Ellie (Charlotte Kate Fox) and soon the two are in love. But her leaving Scotland and coming to Japan as Masaharu's wife will not be easy for either of them. Nor will it be easy for Masaharu to fulfill his dream of making whiskey in Japan. 8 March – April 2015 But together Ellie and her Massan will find a way to overcome all... This drama is based on the real-life founder of Nikka Whiskey and his Scottish-born wife. The drama shows a unique way of viewing Japanese virtues, and cross-cultural hospitality, while gaining an understanding of the differences between Scotland and Japan. Montogomery の Anne of Green Gables を日本語に翻訳することになります。 「マッサン」２０１４年１０月から２０１５年３月まで放映 １９２０年代の日本の瓶山酒造の次男亀山政春が苦労をして日本で 初めてウィスキーを商業生産する物語です。亀山政春はスコットラン ドに行き、スコットランド女性を連れ帰って妻にします。この女性エリ ーが日本文化を生活の中で学び、次第に日本好きになっていく過程 が物語の重要な要素で、カナダに住む我々には特に面白いです。 実在の人物はニッカウィスキーの創始者とそのスコットランド人の妻 です。 図書館の開館時間 開館時間はＥＪＣＡウェブサイトの図書館のタブをクリックして確かめ てください。また毎週火曜日の午後には数名の図書コミティーのメン バーが図書館で皆様にサービスを提供しています。 Mr. Tatsuhiro Matsunouchi and Curling Sanae Ohki th On Saturday, February 7 , about 50 EJCA members, Japanese businessmen and their friends attended a curling “fun-spiel” at the Granite Curling Club in Edmonton, organized by Mr. Tatsuhiro Matsunouchi (Hiro). Almost 75% of us had never curled before and the rest had been curling for years. It was my first time to curl. I had watched games on TV and thought it a funny sport because curlers were so eagerly sweeping the ice. My friends were joining the games, so I decided to try it once to see if I liked it or not. First, I noticed at the club, the curling lane was much longer than what I thought when I watched games on TV. Second, it was not easy just to walk steadily on the ice. I realized curling was much harder for beginners than it looked on TV. I started appreciating the skill of experts who could smoothly throw stones on the ice. Experts taught us the basic skills of curling for forty minutes. We paired up and lined along both sides of the lane and threw stones to our partners. It was the distance of just three meters or so but it was still not easy to throw stones smoothly. We also practiced sliding on the ice and throwing stones. This was the most challenging skill. Every time I tried, I lost balance and fell down. I had my ski helmet on, anticipating that I might fall on the ice. After this exercise, we played real games. We were grouped into 12 teams with an experienced skip on each team. By the time we finished the games, we had learned the basic skills, rules and how to enjoy curling. Some of us really liked curling and went back to the club in the following weeks. We thank Hiro for arranging such a wonderful opportunity for us. Interview with Hiro Matsunouchi: Sanae: Thank you so much for organizing the curling th event for us on February 7 . I was a complete beginner but now I know the basic skills，rules and can enjoy playing and watching curling. I understand that you came to the Granite Curling Club to study ice-making for curling. Can you tell me exactly what you are studying there? Hiro: There are two essentials for making ice for curling: to make a flat ice surface (Skating rinks look flat but it has a gap of a few cm. Curling rinks require a gap of 1 mm or less) and to make tiny ice pebbles on the ice surface to reduce friction between the ice and stone so that the stone can travel a long distance with a minimal push. There is a net of pipes laid on the concrete floor that freezes water. Once the ice is made, we scrape the surface flat with a 1.5 meter-long blade. The stones mostly travel the middle part of the lane and we have to take into consideration this factor when we blade the ice. Once the ice surface is bladed flat, we spray tiny water drops on the ice surface. The ice drops freeze on the ice surface and make tiny ice pebbles. These ice pebbles can reduce the friction and enable stones to reach a long distance. ….next page Moshi Moshi カーリングと松之内達弘さん 大木早苗 ２月７日土曜日に EJCA の会員と日本企業の仕事でエドモントンへ 来ている人たち５０人近くが集まってカーリング大会をしました。この うち 75%位の人はカーリング全くの初心者で、25%は長くカーリング をしている人です。松之内さんという日本から来たカーリングの氷作 りの専門家兼カーリング選手が大会を企画しました。 私もカーリングは初めてでした。今まではなんとなく箒で氷をこする 動作が家の掃除のように思えて、何も氷の上でまで掃除をしなくても と、カーリングをしてみようとは思いませんでした。しかし、今回は友 達も大勢参加するので１度やってみてから好きか嫌いかを決めた方 が良いなと思って参加しました。初めてカーリング場に入ってみると カーリングのレーンがテレビで見るよりは意外と長いのにまず驚きま した。次に氷の上を歩いてみると、とてもとても滑りやすいのにもう一 度驚きました。テレビで見るカーリングの試合は、本当に上手な人た ちがやっているので、氷の上を片足で滑りながら重いストーンを静か に手から離すのもごく自然で簡単そうに見えるのです。 ところが実際に自分でしてみると、とても難しい動作でした。はじめ の４０分は経験のある方が教えてくれました。私は３番目の練習チ ームに入って１５人ほどの仲間と練習しました。まずは氷の上を歩く 練習です。皆が慎重に歩き、ちょうどペンギンの群れが歩いているよ うな風景です。次にストーンと呼ばれるカーリングの石を手に取って その重さに驚きました。３メートルほど離れたところにいる相手の人 にストーンを正確に投げる練習をしました。これも意外と難しいのに びっくり。次に実際のレーンに入って片膝を立ててバランスをとりな がら氷の上を滑る練習です。これもまたとっても難しいでした。私は 全部不成功。一回毎につんのめって転んでばかり。転ぶことを予想 してスキーのヘルメットをかぶっていたのは正解でした。そして最後 に、氷の上を滑りながらストーンを手から離し、目的の円の中に入れ ます。40 分の練習時間が終わるとすぐに試合です。カーリングの経 験のある方１２人がスキッパーになって１２チームをつくりました。 この楽しいカーリングのワークショップを企画した松之内さんが、もう すぐ日本へ帰ると伺い急遽お話を聞きました。以下はインタビューの 記録です。 私: 2 月 7 日のカーリングのワークショップを計画していただいて本 当にありがとうございました。私はカーリングについて何も知らなか ったのに、１回行っただけで何となくルールもわかったしどんな風に やるかも知ることができてとっても楽しい会でした。この会場になっ たグラニットカーリング場は松之内さんが、アイスメイキングの勉強 にきているところと伺いましたがどんなことをしてらっしゃるのですか。 松之内: カーリング場のアイスメイキングには沢山の工程があり説 明するにはとても時間が足りませんが、大事な事が 2 つあります。1 つは氷の表面が水平であること、スケートリンクも水平に見えますが、 実際には高低差は数ｃｍ単位で誤差があります。カーリングではそ の誤差を 1ｍｍ以下にしないとゲームができるアイスにはなりませ ん。もう一つは氷の表面にペブルと呼ばれる細かい凹凸を作って石 が遠くへよく滑るようにすることです。床はコンクリートの上に冷却パ イプが通っていて、そこにシーズンの初めに水をはって氷を作ってい きます。その氷の表面を長さ 1.5 メートル位のブレイドで削って平ら にするのです。ストーンがよく通る真ん中辺りとあまり通らない端が ありますが、その辺も計算に入れて削っていくのです。氷が水平に 削れたらその上にぬるま湯（４０度前後）の小さい粒を撒いて氷の上 に細かい水玉を作ります。水玉が凍ると凸凹ができて摩擦が少なく なり、ストーンが遠くまで滑るのです。これは全部手作業で す。 ．．．．次のページ March - April 2015 9 Moshi Moshi ．．．．．From previous page We have to blade the ice and spray water drops all by hand. We do this every morning and between games. For a formal game, we have to prepare four lanes. At the Granite Curling Club, it takes us about two hours in the morning and one hour between games. The condition of the ice changes with the outside temperature, room temperature, moisture, and temperature of the ice. It is a challenging task to control these factors and keep the surface of ice well for games. Sanae: I could start enjoying curling from the first time I played. It seems to me that curling is a sport easy to get into for beginners. Hiro: Curling can be enjoyed by young and old people. There are curling leagues for blind people too. Sanae: Why did you choose Edmonton to study icemaking for curling? Hiro: Curling started in Scotland but Canada has the largest number of curlers in the world. Canadian curlers are always at the top of the world. There is a national training centre in Edmonton. So, Edmonton was my natural choice. I have been studying ice making here and also practicing curling. I participated in several games too. Sanae: How did you get interested in curling? Hiro: I watched the Japanese curling team at the Winter Olympics in Torino and I liked it. Then, I had an opportunity to play it in Akita for 2 days. At that time there was no curling facility in western Japan. Sanae: What is you impression of Edmonton? Hiro: I wanted to experience extremely cold days in Edmonton. But this winter has been rather mild and disappointing from this perspective. Anyway, I experienced a few days of minus 30. I cooked myself and found Japanese food ingredients are not so easy to get in Edmonton. Sanae: Since you came to Edmonton, you participated in many EJCA activities. Hiro: I knew about EJCA in Japan. So I visited the EJCA centre immediately after I arrived in Edmonton and found out about EJCA members playing curling as well as other EJCA activities and clubs. I had New Year’s Day without special Japanese food for the first time in my life. So, I really enjoyed Japanese food at the EJCA New Year’s th Party on January 10 and felt like I was really in the newyear. I am going back to Japan soon. In Japan, I will make the best use of my ice-making skills and also want to become a good curler. I hope I can come back to Canada for a curling competition. Sanae: Please tell us when you come to Edmonton again. What do you want to eat most when you go back to Japan? Hiro: I want to eat Japanese food such as udon and tsukemono (Japanese picked vegetable). I want to eat Yaki-niku (Korean-style grilled meat) too. Sanae: Thank you for sharing your interesting story with us. 10 March – April 2015 .．．．前ページより 毎朝と試合前に氷を平らにしてペブルをまきます。公式試合の時は 4 シートを使うのでそれを全部平らにしペブルを撒くには大勢で朝は ２時間、試合間は 1 時間位かかり、試合と試合の間に氷の整備を繰 り返します。私のいるリンクは８シートもあり、人数も限られているの で本当にたくさんの時間がかかります。氷は試合中にも刻々と変化 していきます。外気温や室温、湿度、氷の温度など沢山の条件をコ ントロールしなければならないので、アイスメーカーは本当に大変で す。 私: ワークショップに参加させていただいただけでカーリングの楽しさ がよくわかりました。スポーツの中では割合入りやすいものですね。 松之内: カーリングの良い所は年齢に関係なくできることです。また 目の見えない方のリーグもあって色々な人が楽しめるスポーツです。 EJCA の皆さんが楽しめて本当に良かったです。 私: ところで松之内さんはどうしてエドモントンでカーリング場作りを 学び、選手として練習をすることにされたのですか。 松の内: カーリングはスコットランドが発祥の地ですが現在はカーリ ング人口が最も多いのはカナダです。そのうえ、カナダはカーリング の世界最強国で魅力的な国です。エドモントンはナショナルトレーニ ングセンターもあり、強い選手も多いのでエドモントンにしました。今 ここで氷の作り方を学びながら選手として技術の向上に励み、試合 にも出ています。 私: 日本ではまだカーリング人口は少ないと思いますが松之内さん はどうしてカーリングに興味を持たもたれたのですか。 松之内: 私がカーリングを始めるきっかけになったのはトリノオリン ピックの時に日本チームの試合を観て、とても面白いと思い、青森 の近くまで行ってカーリングを ２泊３日でしたのがきっかけです。し かし、私のいる西日本には専用リンクもなく、カーリングを本格的に できるようになったのはその大分後になってからです。 私；エドモントンで印象に残ることはなんですか。 松之内:エドモントンはとても寒いところだと聞いていましたので、極 寒の生活を経験してみたかったです。残念ながら今年は暖かくて極 寒という寒さを経験出来ませんでした。もっともマイナス 30 度に下が ったことが 2 、3 日ありその日はとっても寒くて外へは出られません でした。それから食事は大体自炊をしていたのですが思ったより日 本食の食材が手に入りにくかったと思います。食べ物は結構苦労し ました。 私: 9 月にエドモントンにいらしてからすぐに EJCA のいろいろな行 事に参加してくださいましたね。 松之内: エドモントンへ来る前に EJCA があることを知っていたので す。友達が教えてくれました。会館を訪ねて、カーリングのイベントが あることや、いろいろなクラブや行事に参加できることを知りました。 今年の新年は、生まれて初めて日本食のない新年でした。それで 1 月 10 日に参加した EJCA 新年会は本当によかったです。あそこで おせち料理をご馳走になって、やっと私に新年が来ました。EJCA で はカーリングを楽しむ日本人や日系の方々とも会うことができました。 もうすぐ日本に戻りますが、日本に戻ったら氷作りの技術を生かし、 また選手としても日本のカーリングに貢献したいと思っています。良 い選手になれたらその時はカナダにも遠征したいですね。 私: カナダへ来るときはお知らせくださいね。最後の質問です。日本 に帰って食べたいものはなんですか？ 松の内: 日本料理が好きだから日本料理を食べたいですね、それか ら焼肉とうどん、漬け物かな。 私： 興味あるお話をありがとうございました。 Moshi Moshi EJCA Board proposed the following events for 2015.
