Both of these events will be held on Saturday March 20, 2010, with Hina Matsuri in the afternoon followed by the
Sukiyaki Dinner immediately following. Details of the 2 events are as follows

Traditionally, Hina Matsuri is a festival to celebrate spring
and dolls. On display at the Centre this year will be the
EJCA collection of Hina dolls and other dolls. Also,
please bring your own Japanese dolls (not necessarily Hina
dolls) that you would like to display. Let’s enjoy a wide
variety of dolls and have afternoon tea with Hina pastries!
(No charge for tea and pastries).
Please join us in your favorite Kimono!
Your delicious sukiyaki dinner will be prepared and served
at each table by an expertly trained EJCA community
member. He or she will prepare it just the way you like it!
Please make your reservations early because seating for this
event is limited to the first 100 received! Only those with

for yourself this year!
Past Events
Board Retreat - November 28, 2009
The Board spent a fruitful Saturday discussing plans for the
coming year and for future years. Thank you for contributing
ideas and suggestions either in structured settings like the
discussion groups held on the day of the AGM or through
individual conversations. Input from the membership ensures
that the Board is not making plans in a vacuum but is
addressing the Association's needs.
We also discussed a number of tasks that have fallen under the
Treasurer's umbrella. For literally decades, our dedicated
Treasurers, Tak Nagata then Jim Hoyano managed a number of
tasks that should be assigned elsewhere.
Maintaining
membership records and collecting fees, and looking after the
Moshi Moshi advertisers are two major jobs that needed
reassignment. It is hard to believe that Jim has been managing
all of these “Treasurer” tasks, in addition to editing the English
section of the Moshi Moshi. As an organization, we owe him
an enormous “thank you”!
We are currently in the process of transitioning these tasks:

History Project
At some level, we are all aware of the importance of recording
and preserving family and community histories. In the EJCA
community, there have been a few early projects and attempts at
documenting the history of the association and the pioneer
members of the Edmonton Japanese community. We have
some documentation, years of Moshi Moshi newsletters and
wonderful picture boards, but no organized compilation of all of
this information. Nor have we tapped into all the information
that is still ungathered. Unfortunately, many of our “historians”
are already no longer with us so there is a keen sense of urgency
to capture these stories, pictures and memories.
In this issue and the March Moshi Moshi, there will be details
of our discussion and plans relating to each of these priorities.
Hopefully, as we go along, you will keep providing more
feedback and ideas.
This year we will embark on a two-year project to gather and
save this invaluable history not only for ourselves but also for
future generations. In order to do this, we need your help!
Financial
We were pleased to have Ryo Komatsu, a new member of the
Finance Committee, provide input from an accounting
standpoint at this year's retreat.
It has been some years since EJCA has had a professional audit
performed, so it was decided that we should have this done at
the 2009/2010 year-end. At the 2010 AGM, we will elect two
members to a 2-year term on the Audit Committee which will
audit the books at each year-end, with a professional audit being
performed in the third year.
Board - recruitment, definition of roles and transition of
tasks
Defining roles and tasks makes it easier to function optimally,
so the Board examined how Board Directors could take on a

committee (Rick Hirata-leader, Sanae Ohki, Stephanie Bozzer,
Jim Hoyano, Brenda Madsen and Cathy Tennant) met on

Past Events
Christmas Party (December 12, 2009) and New Year's
Potluck (January 9, 2010)
Thank you for making these events so successful!
Despite recording the second coldest temperature in the world
on the night of the Christmas Party (second only to Siberia),
we had over 100 attendees (only about 4 cancellations) ...
proving once again, the hardiness of EJCA members!!!
We had a record number of people attending the New Year's
Potluck to share a bowl of traditional ozoni before savouring an
amazing array of delicious gochiso. There was so much variety
to choose from that the buffet line was sometimes moving at a
snail's pace but there was plenty of time during the evening to
go for “seconds” and “thirds”. It was a yummy night!
More details of both events are in separate articles.

NAJC President’s Report

The New Year has started with renewed hope and desire for a
more peaceful world. It is mid January and all eyes are focused
on the tragedy in Haiti. The devastation and violence that has
erupted in that part of the world is unfathomable. Canadians, in
their inimitable fashion have opened their hearts and wallets to
the plight of the Haitian peoples. We are part of a global
community and need to always be reminded of our moral
obligation to assist those less fortunate not only at home but in
other parts of the world.
The National Executive Board (NEB) met in Winnipeg on
January 16-17, 2010, to establish priorities for this year, having
reviewed the responses to questionnaires that were sent to the
membership. An on-going concern for many member
organizations is finding an effective and efficient method to
record and preserve the history of Japanese Canadians in their
community. The Heritage Task Force has been given the job of
assisting communities with this important undertaking. One of
the issues that was discussed during the NEB meeting was the
Community Development Pilot Project Program, which invites
membership organizations to submit a proposal that addresses a
community need. The deadline for this funding is February 1,
2010. Please consider applying for this program.
The NAJC Human Rights Committee has been focused on this
Government's funding cuts to various groups and organizations,

such as arts and culture groups, women's rights groups,
children's welfare groups, immigrants and social justice groups,
Canadian Arab Federation, etc. KAIROS is one such group
whose funding has been significantly cut and that the HRC has
recently researched. KAIROS is a "faith-based ecumenical
organization... that effects social change through advocacy,
education and research" and works in Canada as well as
internationally. The NAJC has written to the Government
requesting that their funding be restored.
An Ad Hoc Committee was struck at the NEB meeting that
will examine how our history is presented to the public, in the
way of publications, exhibits, museums, etc. Recently,
concerns have been raised about information regarding the
history of Japanese Canadians during WWII, in the Discover
Canada booklet, which is a study guide for new immigrants,
regarding the rights and responsibilities of citizenship. The
NAJC, in the past, has also submitted a number of concerns
regarding the exhibit at the Canadian War Museum in Ottawa.
The Canadian Museum of Human Rights is conducting round
table discussions across Canada, inviting Canadians for their
input regarding the content of the museum. Please consider

2010 EJCA New Year Party - January 9
After experiencing very-severe cold weather, where you wonder
talk of Global Warming must be for a different planet, a little
bit of temperature rise is really welcome indeed!
The hall was filling up with many relaxed and happy faces. The
EJCA New Years party was held on January 9 beginning at
about5:00 pm. The attendance this year was the highest it has
been in recent memory, and included familiar faces, new faces,
young and old....we were all greeted by decorations at the
entrance befitting a celebration of the New Year, the year of the
Tiger.
In the hall 4 long tables were placed end-to-end in a long row in
the middle of the room, covered with nice tablecloths, and the
sight of all the dishes of gochiso everybody brought was
awesome.
In deed, there were so many dishes one wondered where to start!
But before partaking of the gochiso, we were treated to o-zoni,
a traditional mochi soup served on New Year’s Day in Japan.
There were many who worked in the kitchen to prepare the zoni
for us. Those who are used to having o-zoni or those new to the
custom, all thoroughly enjoyed the delicious ozoni, and made
us feel that the new year had arrived.
After ozoni we were directed to the food table in groups by Rick
Hirata, There were so many dishes that even if you took a little
bit of this or that, your plate got filled up quickly and there
were still many more dishes to go! Look at that person, his
plate is already heaped high and he is still pilling up more on
top ot it! Rick is shouting now, “You can come back for
seconds!”.
This year we were encouraged to wear kimono to the party.
Those in kimono were given a gift. I do not think people
because of that; in fact, there was a whole range of kimono
types: full dress kimonos, half kimonos, pseudo-kimonos,
just haori (coat), kimono-skirt, etc. you can see a lot of
cooperational spirit and effort. There were two men in kimono
too and they looked fantastic! There are several photos of the
New Year party in this issue of Moshi Moshi, including many
of the kimono wearers.
The potluck new year party first began many years when a few
of us got together to celebrate “Onna Shogatsu (Women’s New
Year”. It began with mainly women with few men, and over
the years it grew bigger and bigger to an event with more than
100 people participating. Since this is a pot luck dinner it
makes people feel that they are full participants, in a way it is a
grassroots event and that is why it is popular. This is a fun
event every year. Using this event effectively, this event can be
used to introduce real Osechi and explanation to go with it so
that it becomes an introduction to Japanese culture, more
enjoyable and meaningful.
This is a good example of an inexpensive, but very popular
community event. However, there were many people working
behind the scene: those who went shopping for zoni
ingredients, chopping, cooking, baking mochi, making soup,
buying wine and sake, buying gifts, setting up tables and
chairs, decorating the hall and entrance, etc. To all who took
part in the preparations so that people could enjoy the evening,
thank you very much. We sure had a good time. Hope we can
have another great party next year.
Wine and sake were going around and the volume of
conversation was getting higher. Everybody was in a good
mood!

EJCA Christmas Party 2009

The day was cold but the party was a warm mingling of friends and family. The dinner tables were colourfully
decorated and holiday music played in the background. As everyone arrived the kids were able to craft a festive
nametag for themselves and their parents were able to move to a table. Everyone was able to mingle and chat with
old friends and to greet new friends too. Dinner was a ham and turkey delight with most people returning for
second helpings. The kids were wonder struck with Santa's visit and many of them played quietly with their new
toys. The children then helped the adults sing the Christmas carols, too bad some of the adult singers were a little
off key but they did sing with a great deal of zest to make up for it. People stayed afterwards to visit some more
while having dessert that consisted of brownies, rice crispie squares and two kinds of cheesecake. It appeared that
everyone enjoyed themselves and hopefully everyone went away with wonderful memories.
The Gardens
An exhibition of Paintings of the Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens
The Nikka Yuko Japanese Gardens is an oasis of beauty and
tranquility in the dry prairies of southern Alberta. The gardens
have been the jewel in the crown of Lethbridge, Alberta since
their creation in 1967 and Robert Webb has captured its essence
in a series of exquisite paintings. “The Gardens” will be
exhibited at the Edmonton Japanese Community Association
Centre from March 6th to 13th, 2010.
Over the past 2 years Mr. Webb has worked on capturing the
colours and shapes of the gardens and presenting them in his
bold and vibrant style. Mr. Webb was given special access to
the gardens, during different times of year and to off path areas.
These unique perspectives will surprise and delight those
acquainted with the gardens, while the iconic images of the
‘Peace Bell’ and sculpted trees will introduce the Nikka Yuko
Japanese Gardens to a wider audience.
Robert Webb is a graduate of the University of Alberta Fine
Arts program as well as the Alberta Arts College. He has
exhibited trhoughout Alberta as well as in Montreal and Japan.

“The Gardens’ is a departure from Mr. Webb’s usual subject
matter of figure drawing and painting, but he has always had a
fascination with Asian art and culture. A visit to his family,
teaching English in western Japan in the mid 90’s further
inspired the creation of “The Gardens’.
“The Gardens” will be on display at the Edmonton Community
Association Centre from Saturday March 6th to Saturday

Help Us Make Paper Cranes
for the
Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the 1910 Avalanche
(see page 17 for more details)
Here are some ways to contribute to the Senbazuru (linked
paper cranes) that EJCA will send for the Commemoration of
the 100th Anniversary of Canada's largest avalanche which
claimed 58 lives. All the Senbazuru being contributed will be
on display at the Revelstoke Museum on March 4, 2010 then
at Rogers Pass on August 15, 2010.
You need lessons
1. Come to the EJCA Library (at the Centre) between 1:00
and 2:00 p.m. on Monday February 15th for lessons.
Many instructions are also on YouTube.
2. Take some paper home and bring back the folded cranes by
noon February 20, 2010.
We will need to make the Senbazuru and mail them the last
week in February, so we hope that many, many of you will
help.

私と同じようにあなたも2009年はサッと過ぎてしまい、そして
月日が速く過ぎて行く事にショックを感じていませんか。毎日
を有意義に過ごし、その上「立ち止まってバラの匂いをかぐ」
時間も欲しいですよね。日常を有意義に過ごすにはリラックス
したりバラの匂いをかいだりすることが一番なのだと言うこと
も覚えておきましょう。今年は「自分のため」に時間を使いま
しょう。
過ぎ去ったイベント
役員会リトリートー11月28日
役員会は土曜日、丸一日を使って新年とその先までの計画を検
討しました。年次総会でのグループごとのの話し合いや個々の
会話からのアイデアや提案をありがとうございました。会員か
らのインプットは役員会が真空状態で計画を立てているのでは
なく、会の要望に基づいていることを確かにします。
優先的に取り上げる項目は次の分野です。
1 会計ー年次会計検査の過程
2 役員会ー補充、役職の定義と仕事の引き継ぎ
3 歴史プロジェクトー2年計画
4 ヘリテージ・フェスティバルー新鮮さと楽しさの継続
5 プログラムー青年層、文化
6 会員ー適宜な活動を進めるためのデータを集める
7 コミュニケーションー「もしもし」、ウエブサイトを良くす
る
今号と3月の「もしもし」には討論の詳細とこれら各優先事項に
関する計画を記載します。この経過中にあなたからの反響とか
アイデアを提供していただきたいと思います。
経理
会計委員会の新会員、リョウ・コマツ、が今年のリトリートで
経理基準の点から提案をします。
EJCAが専門家の経理検査を受けてから数年が経ちましたので
2009/2010年度にはそれを行なうことにしました。2010年年次
総会で、2年ごとの経理検査委員会の2名を選出し、各年度末に
検査をすることにします。また経理専門家の検査を3年ごとに行
ないます。
役員会ー補充、役職の定義と仕事の引き継ぎ
役員の役割と仕事を定義することで最適に活動することができ
ます。役員会は役員がどのような特定な「任務と責任」を果た
すことができるかを検討します。
私たちは「書記」の仕事になってしまった数々の仕事について
話し合いました。文字通り、何十年と言う間、私たちの貢献的
書記、その昔のタック・ナガタ、次いで現在のジム・ホヤノ、
は他の人たちがすべき多くの役割を一人で果たしてきていす。
会員記録を維持し、会費を集め、「もしもし」の広告を管理し
続け、EJCANETの充実を計ってきましたがこれらは分担して行
なうべきです。ジムがこれらの仕事を一人でやりながら、その
上に「もしもし」の編集発行も続けているのです。日系人会と
して私たちはジムに多大なる感謝をしなければなりません。
私たちは現在これらの仕事を他へ移そうとしています。

歴史プロジェクト
私たちは家族やコミュニティーの記録を保存することは大切な
ことだと考えています。EJCAでは過去に会の歴史やパイオニア
の記録を残そうとした試みはありました。現在少しの記録、長
年の「もしもし」ニュースレター、写真などがありますが総括
的な情報としては纏まっていません。まだ集まっていないイン
フォーメーションを集める動きもありません。不幸にも以前こ
れらを集めた「歴史家たち」はもう私たちとは一緒ではありま
せんから、これらのお話や写真や記念品物を残そうと言う緊急
な機運があります。
今年、私たちは2年間プロジェクトとして個人の歴史を集め保存
するプロジェクトを立ち上げます。これは私たちのためだけで
なく将来の世代のためでもあります。これを遂行するためには
皆さんのご協力が必要です。
歴史委員会は現役員会の人たちで構成されていますが進んでい
くにしたがって外部の方々にも加わっていただきたいと思いま
す。委員会（リック・ヒラターリーダー、サナエ・オーキ、ス
テファニー・ボーザー、ジム・ホヤノ、ブレンダ・マディソ
ン、キャシー・テナント）は1月12日に会合し次の試案を立てま
した（種々な事項は同時に検討されます）。
・ プロジェクトの概要を立てるための資料を調べる
・ このプロジェクトのためのどキュメント、物語、情報、
アイデア、関心を持つ人たちを招き、プロジェクトが包
括する内容、どのように作り上げるか、最終的にどのよ
うな形（本、DVDなど）で完成するか、などについて
「智慧絞り」を行なう。
・ 特定のゴール、時間帯、予算を設定する
・ 経験のある作家を雇う
・ インタビューをする人や他のボランティアを見つけ、訓
練する
・ 資金調達：NAJCのコミュニティー・デベロップメント・
グラント、カジノ

終わったイベント
クリスマス・パーティー（12月12日、2009年）と新年会（1月9
日、2010年）
これらのイベンを成功に導いていただいきありがとうございま
した。
クリスマス・パーティーの夜は世界的記録の寒さ（シベリアに
次いで二番目）にも関わらず100名以上の参加者（4名がキャン
セル）がありました⋯EJCA会員の強靭さを再度示しました。
新年会の参加者数は今までで最高の記録で、見事に並んだご馳
走を頂く前にみんなでお正月の伝統である雑煮をいただきまし
た。バフェーテーブルにはあまりにも沢山のご馳走が並んでい
て皆さんゆっくりと選んでいました その夜は二度も三度もお
代わりができるくらい沢山の料理がありました。美味しい夜で
したよ。

これからのイベント

いつも好きな歌い手を応援し、新しい歌手を楽しんだりと楽し
いイベントです。

キ・デナーにお越し下さい。両方へ参加されるのはいかかです

地球温暖化なんでどこの星の話と言いたくなるような厳しい寒
さを経験した後の、ほんの少しの気温の上昇は実にウエルカ
ム。
皆さんのそんな少しホッとした表情が会場一杯に見られまし
た。EJCA新年会は1月9日午後5時から。今年の参加者数は今ま
でで最高と言われたのが頷けるほど懐かしい顔、新顔、若い
顔、年配の人たち⋯新年会に相応しい玄関の飾り付けに迎えら
れました！
会場では真ん中に4つの長いテーブルを縦長に置き、きれいな
テーブルクロスなども掛けて、皆さんが持ってこられたご馳走
が所狭しと並んだ様子は「お見事！」の一言でした。本当にい
ろいろな料理が集まって何処から手をつけて良いのやら。
でもその前に日本伝統のお正月らしく「お雑煮」の振る舞いが
ありました。キッチンで大勢の人たちがお雑煮を作ってくだ
さったのです。お雑煮を食べ慣れた人も始めての人も神妙に、
改まってお雑煮をいただき、新しい年が来た事を実感したので
した。
その後は指定されたテーブルから順にバフェーテーブルへ行き
ましたが、何しろすごい数の料理です、ほんの少しづつ取って
お皿に載せてもすぐにお皿が一杯になってしまします。見ると
先にもずっとご馳走が並んでいるではありませんか。隣りの人
のお皿を見ると山のように積み上げたご馳走の上にもっと積み
上げているのです！リック・ヒラタが叫んでいます。「You
can
come
back
for
seconds!」「お代わりできますよ！」
ワインとお酒も行き渡り、会話の声が次第に高くなります。皆
さんご機嫌です。

今年は着物を来て参加するようにと励まされました。着物を着
て来ると「ギフト」をもらえますよと言う事で。それに釣られ
た訳ではないでしょうが盛装着物、半着物、着物まがい、羽織
だけ、着物のスカートなど大勢の協力と努力が見受けられまし
た。男性も二人が着物姿でなかなか良かったですよ。今号の
方々に載せた着物写真を見てください。
持ち寄り新年会はその昔、ほんの少数の女性たちが「女正月を
しましょうよ」と言うことで始まりました。始めは女性だけ、
その内男性も入れてあげましょうと言うことになり、次第に大
きなって今のように100名以上が参加する大イベントへと発展し
ていったのです。持ち寄り料理と言うことで全員が参加する草
の根的なイベントだから人気があるのでしょう。ともかく毎年
これは楽しいイベントです。この機会を有効に使い、出来れば
おせち料理がどんなもので、なぜそれを食べるのかなどと言う
日本伝統の説明などがあると、もっと日本文化の紹介として役
立つかとも思います。
お金がかからない、人気の高い、楽しいコミュニティー・イベ
ントの良い例ですよね。
でもやはり、裏で働く人たちがいます。お雑煮の材料を買った
り、切ったり、煮たり、お餅を焼いたり、お吸い物を作った
り。お酒やワインを買いに行ったり、ギフトを買ったり、テー
ブルやイスを並べたり、会場を飾り立てたり、とする事は一杯
あります。それらを担当し、皆が楽しい時間を過ごすことがで
きるようにお膳立てをしてくださった皆さん、ありがとうござ
いました。充分に楽しませていただきました。
また来年の新年会も楽しい会でありますように。

千羽鶴作りにご協力を！
1910年に起きた雪崩の100周年記念
100年前のカナダで一番大きな雪崩で58名の犠牲者が出ましたがその半数以上が日本／日系人でした。私たちが作る
折り鶴は千羽鶴として2010年3月4日にレベルストーク博物館で、9月15日にはロージャース峠で展示されます。
千羽鶴を作って2月の最後の週に送りますので多くのの皆さんのご協力をお願いします。
もし折り鶴の作り方を知っていて折り紙（10x10
cm)も持っている方は鶴を作って2月20日正午までにセンターへ
お届けください。

ENDOWMENT FUND RECIPIENTS
WINNIPEG, MB. December 31, 2009. The National Executive Board of the NAJC is pleased to announce the
following recipients of the Endowment Fund for the Fall 2009 term:
Cultural Development (CD)
Fubuki Daiko (Winnipeg) is celebrating its 15th anniversary with plans to present matinee and evening concerts on
May 14th, with three outside participants, Seiichi Tanaka, founder of North American Taiko, Rick Shiomi and Mu
Daiko. The group requested funding for facility rental, sound technicians, accommodations and performer fees for a
presentation on May 13th to inner city students.
Granted: $2,500.00
Pi Theatre (Vancouver) is co-producing the Canadian premiere of “After the Quake” with Rumble Productions. The
show is based on two of Haruki Murakami's internationally renowned short stories, “Honey Pie” and “Super Frog Saves
Tokyo”. The organization requested funds to hire a community liaison person, Cindy Mochizuki, to connect the
production to the community and to network with the Japanese Canadian community of Vancouver.
Granted: $1,500.00
Starry Stroll Productions (Edmonton) is producing a short fictional film,”Reiko”, which tells the story of one
Japanese Canadian family during the war years, that includes a set of Hina Dolls. Funding is requested to cover general
expenses such as those related to facility rentals, equipment rentals, and travel.

Tomoe Arts Society (Vancouver) is a non-profit organization that promotes, teaches and performs nihon buyoh
(Japanese classical dance). This organization wishes to showcase “Odori-the World of Kabuki Dance”, by having a core
event of two performances by guest dancers from Japan, community workshops and public lecture-demonstrations.
Funding is requested for technician fees, honorariums, translations, artist fee, space rental and driver fees.

100 years ago on March 4th, the largest avalanche in Canadian
history claimed the lives of 58 men at Rogers Pass, BC.
This fateful event will be remembered by the community through a special commemoration, and the folding of
thousands of paper cranes.
You are invited to participate & become part of this story, to
Fold the Wish into a Crane "to never see such a tragedy again".
Background
Why fold paper cranes? Discovered only recently, 32 of the 58 men were of Japanese origin. It is
believed that if you fold 1,000 paper cranes and link them together (called a Senbazuru), your wish will come
true. Yuko Fujimura of Revelstoke, BC, initiated this project and donated countless hours, in coordination with
Revelstoke Museum and Archives, Friends of Mount Revelstoke and Glacier, Revelstoke Secondary School,
and Parks Canada. Yuko has already inspired us by folding 1000 origami cranes.
The Senbazurus will be part of the Commemoration of the 100th Anniversary of the 1910 Slide, and will be on
display in Rogers Pass and the Revelstoke Museum and Archives, as part of a long-term interactive exhibit.

どうでも良い話

たんじゃなかったかな。500円コインはもちろんなかった。
その一
娘がごく小さい頃、夏は東京は暑すぎるし冬は休みが短いし、
と、しばらく日本へ行かない時期がありました。ごくたまに日
本に行った時の話：ある日、家の掃除を手伝っていてGarbage
bagが必要になり、私が買って来る！と勇んで近くの雑貨屋さん
へ行った私。あらちこちら店の中を見たけど探すものが見つか
らない。店のおじさんに聞く事にしました。ところが彼の前に
立った途端、Garbage
bagに対応する日本語が出てこないので
す。そこで私の説明：「あの 、これくらいの大きさで、普
通、黒か濃い緑色のビニールの袋を探しているのですが」「何
に使うのですか？」と聞かれて「ゴミなんかを入れるんですけ
ど」「あ ゴミ袋ですね」⋯「あ らゴミ袋って言うんです
か」。おじさんの表情をお見せしたかったですよ。前から見て
も後ろから見ても横から見ても、斜めから見ても、日本人の中
年のおばさんが「ゴミ袋」を知らないって、これどう言う事、
と言う顔。
その二
母が住んでいる近くにある、母がスーパーと呼んでいる3階立て
のデパートへ一緒に行きました。私には珍しいものばかり。特
に食器売り場で瀬戸物なんかは見ていると楽しくなる物ばか
り。カナダへ持って帰るには大変だから欲しいからと言ってど
んどん買う事もできません。そうこうしている内にとても素敵
な物を見つけました。それが並んでいる陳列棚には「フリー
カップ」と書いてあるではありませんか！。私がそこて咄嗟に
考えたこと：日本は豊になったと聞いているけど、お客さんに
こんな素敵なカップをタダで振舞うなんて。大したもんだワ
。「私も二つくらいもらっていこう と！」と私は中でもき
れいなカップを二つ取って買い物袋に入れました。側に居た母
が「それお金払わないうちにそんな所に入れない方が良いん
じゃない？」。「だってフリーって書いてから、良いのよ。タ
ダなんだから」と私。「タダじゃないよ」、「タダよ」、
「カップの底を見てご覧。値段が付いているでしょう」。確か
にそこには値段が付いていました。
その上、おじさんが手渡してくれたゴミ袋を持ってレジへ。お
じさんがおつりを手渡してくれました。その中に見た事のない
コインが混じっていました。500円コイン。初めて見た私は、
「あら 、500円のコインがあるんですネ」。おじさんのおげげ
んそうな表情がすこし険しくなりました。「500円硬貨はもう随
分前からありますよ」。
後でつくづく思うに、母が居てくれて良かった。もし私一人
だったら店の警備員に捕まって、万引きで警察に突き出され、
ひどい目にあっていたかもしれないのです。いくら私が説明し
ても「この女、頭がすこしおかしい」くらいに扱われて。お
こわ。
つくづく考えるに、私が日本に住んでいたころにはごみ袋と言
うものは無かったと思う。ゴミは確かに外にあるゴミ箱に捨て

これはもう少し最近の話。夏の暑い日でした。私は妹とスー

パーへ買い物に出かけました。さんざん歩き回って少しくたび
れ、「何か飲みたいわね」と言う妹に賛同して地下にある簡易
食堂みたいな所へ入りました。妹は「アイス・コーヒー」。私
は「アイス・クリーム」とウエイトレスに言いました。「アイ
スですね」とウエイトレス。「いいえ、アイルクリームです」
と私。「アイスですね」と又ウエイトレス。「いいえ」と言い
かけた私を制して妹が「はい、アイスお願いします」。私は今
度は妹に向かって「氷なんていらないの。アイスクリームが欲
しいんだけ」。「アイスで良いのよ」と妹。私はすっかり混乱
してしまったのです。
その四
その昔はファミコン、パソコン、生コンに混乱し、今はボディ
コンとか合コンとかなんのことかわからない。なにか口にして
は良くない言葉のような響きですよね。
その五
日本にはカタカナ英語が氾濫しているけど、それは英語じゃな
いのよね。カタカナになった途端に日本語になるらしい。一番
イヤな言葉は「ゲット」と言う言葉。英語のGetは動詞ですがカ
タカナのゲットは名詞になるのです。あれを「ゲット」した、
これを「ゲット」した、と使うのです。「入手した」「手に入
れた」「獲得した」と言う立派かどうか知らないけれど日本語
があるのだからどうしてそれを「ゲット」と言う汚い音のカタ
カナ語にしてしまうのでしょう。それを口にする人まで下品に
見えてしまうのです。
その六
以前はカタカナ英語をいつも非難していた私ですが最近はそれ
を英語と思うからいけないのだと考えています。新しい日本語
と思えば良い訳で、私が知らない言葉ができたのです。でもね
カタカナで書かれた英語らしき言葉を英訳するときは本当にお
手上げです。LかRが分らない曖昧な言葉。カタカナでラブなん
で書かれたらLoveなのかRubなのか分らないですよ。一度なん
か「そこがネックなのです」と書かれた論文を英訳していて大
変に困った事がありました。ネックがBottleneckから来ているな
んて知らなかったもんで。
その七
鳩山首相が英語で演説しているのをテレビで見て、「やれや
れ、やっと日本にも英語が話せる首相ができた」と一人で安堵
していました。何にも私が心配する事でもないけれど、常々非
英語圏のよその国のお偉い方々が英語で対等にジャベっている
所を見て、日本の政治家は英語に関してはダメだな、と思って
いたものですから。鳩山首相はスタンフォード大学で学位を取
られたとか。彼が在学していたころはこの私だってスタン
フォードでポスト・ドクターとしてリサーチに励んでいた頃な
のたけど一度も見かけなかったな 。もっとも大学の構内です
れ違ったとしてもも分らなかっただろうし、まず交友のサーク
ルが違っていたでしょう。残念でした。
その八
まだ両親が札幌に住んでいた頃は日本へ行くと東京は素通りし
て札幌へ行きました。夏は大通り公園で炭火で焼いているトウ
モロコシ（札幌ではトウキビと呼んでいる）を食べるのが楽し

み。その昔、まだ北大の学生で理学部の実験室に閉じこもって
いたころ、学生たちが集まってその「トウキビ」を買いに行く
人を「あみだ」で決め、路面電車に乗って買いに行ったもので
した。なんとのんびりしていたことか。札幌へ行ったらそのこ
ろが懐かしいから、かならず大通り公園の「トウキビ」は食べ
なければならないのです。香ばしいしょう油のこげる匂いが遠
くからでも漂ってきます。
エドモントンのヘリテージ・フェスティバルの日本館でもこれ
をすると絶対に人気がでると思うのだけど、未だに説得するこ
とができません。
そんなある時札幌の街に出ていて、暑い日だったし少し休もう
とデパートの屋上へ行き、そこにあるスナックバーような所
で、私は「ソフトアイスクリームをください」「？」店のおば
さんは私の顔を見ているだけ。もう一度「ソフトアイスクリー
ムをください」「？」、反応がありません。私はどうしたら良
いのか分らずそこに突っ立っていました。横からジムが「ソフ
ト一つ」と言うとおばさんはニコリと笑ってすぐにソフトを
作って手渡してくれたのです。
その九
スーパーよりすこしはましかなと思われるような店の洋服売り
場で通りがかりに目に止まったセーターがありました。色が良
くてデザインもなかなか素敵。値段は思ったより高かったけれ
どカナダから日本へ行くと何でも高く感じるからこれが特別な
ことじゃない。もうすぐカナダへ帰ることだし、自分へのお土
産にしようか、などと考えて手に取った。売り子さんが「試着
なさいませんか」と言うので「よし、着てみよう。合わないか
らと言って後で取り替えに来る事もできないのだし」。で試着
室と言うよりカーテンで仕切った狭い場所へ案内されて中へ入
りました。すぐさま、「アノ、お客様、靴をお脱ぎになってく
ださい」と言う声がカーテンの外から聞こえます。カーテンか
ら顔を突き出して私は「あら、靴は外側で脱ぐんですか？」
その十
2005年の「もしもし」1−2月号に「玲子のひな人形」と題した
短文を載せました。7段の古い雛人形をEJCAセンターへ寄付し
ていただいたきました。寄付をされた二世の女性はあまり自分
の事は話ませんでしたし、人形を包んであった日本の新聞が昭
和10年のものであったことから、私は人形の由来をフィクショ
ンとして短文を書き「もしもし」に載せてコミュニティーへの
紹介にしました。そのフィクションを基にして今度短い映画を
作る事になりました。私は原作者としてこのプロジェクトに参
加していますが映画を作ると言うことがいかに大変な仕事であ
るかを実感として体験しています。まず分った事はエドモント
ンには映画に出演できる日本語を話す俳優が居ないと言うこ
と。ロスアンジェルスやバンクーバーまで探しに出かける事に
なりました。短編小説を映画用に脚本化にするには思いもかけ
ないほどの詳細な書き込みが必要なこと。目に見えるもの全て
を決めて書き込んでおかなければなりません。移民夫婦が住ん
でいた小屋の壁がどうなって居たのかまで調べるのです。俳優
さんのオーディション。これだって演じる訓練と経験ある無し
でこれほどに違うものかとおどろきです。
